From humpbacks to orcas, whales and dolphins are renowned for their underwater vocalizations, whether it’s to impress a mate, find prey or strengthen social bonds. But beluga whales are especially vocal, with a complex language of whistles, chirps and rhythmic calls that have led to them being called the “canaries of the sea.”  For the first time, a team of scientists has documented the unique vocalizations of Cook Inlet belugas, a critically endangered population native to Alaska. The roughly 300 of them remaining live year-round in the cold, cloudy waters surrounding both a military base and the port of Anchorage, the busiest shipping port in the state. The scientists found that the low, rumbling noise of commercial ships either partially or completely masked the seven most common calls the whales made when passing through their habitat multiple times a week. Arial Brewer is a PhD student at the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington and the lead author of the recently published study. She joins us to share the findings and how noise from human activity is threatening the survival of Cook Inlet belugas.

Today on the Wild For Change podcast, we are speaking with Teresa Becher and Mandy Migura from Alaska Wildlife Alliance (AWA) about the special population of endangered beluga whales who live in the Cook Inlet in the central Gulf of Alaska.  Teresa is the Beluga Whale Monitoring Coordinator who coordinates monitoring sessions of a whole team of volunteer community scientists and is the go-to expert on the beluga whales' behaviors in the Kenai and Kasilof rivers.  Mandy is the Deputy Director and Marine Program Officer for AWA.  One of her responsibilities is to coordinate a group of nonprofits who advocate for the recovery of Cook Inlet beluga whales, a position she is uniquely suited for given her prior 11-year experience as the Cook Inlet Beluga Whale Recovery Coordinator when she worked for the National Marine Fisheries Service (now called NOAA Fisheries). NOAA Fisheries is the federal agency responsible for the management of Cook Inlet beluga whales.The beluga whales of the Cook Inlet live explicitly in this inlet and because of this limited habitat, they also must face continued threats such as water waste pollution, noise pollution, climate change affecting their food availability as well as the rising temperature of the water in which they live, disease, habitat loss, as well as vessel strikes to name a few.  Their numbers have declined so dramatically, that approximately 300 beluga whales remain in the inlet.  They are now listed as endangered species under the Endangered Species Act.  Alaska Wildlife Alliance is on the front lines, researching the various threats to the beluga whales, addressing these threats to ensure this very specialized group of beluga whales have a chance at surviving as well as raising awareness of how we can become involved and support this small group of beluga whales.  If you live in Alaska near the Cook Inlet and would like to volunteer to monitor the beluga whales, please go to www.akbmp.org to learn more.  If you would like to provide support for the beluga whales via your smartphone, text beluga to (833) 541-0408. If you encounter any stranded marine mammal along a coastal area, please call NOAA at (877) 925-7773.  To learn more about AWA's work, please go to https://www.akwildlife.org.Website: http://www.wildforchange.com Twitter: @WildForChange Facebook: /wildforchange Instagram: wildforchange

Now the funny thing is that I rarely take time to celebrate, and I need to keep doing it more and more and more because it is in the times of celebration, and it's in our resting times that we are getting prepared to do and accomplish more. But it's so important to reward ourselves. It's one of the things I talk about in time management to reward ourselves for all our hard work. "Celebrate your successes, your growth, your accomplishments. Celebrate you. And who you are because through celebration, we are truly loving the self. We are truly celebrating who we are." And isn't that what we are putting out to the business? We want to put out, "Hey, I've got this great product. It's me!" I mean, isn't that what it's all about? It's show business. Let me show you me. It's important to have joy. "For too long, we have been too hard on ourselves. Others have spilled negative energy, attitudes, beliefs, and pain on you."  And guess what? It had nothing to do with you. "All along, you have always been a gift to yourself and the universe." We teach people how to treat us. I was working with a private client today, and she was talking to me about how she'd been really doing this work with me and how she suddenly didn't feel like she had a lot of friends. And I said, you know what? That's kind of part of the process. And it is odd because as you get healthier, the unhealthy people in your life do kind of seem to drift off. And there can be that period of loneliness, but it's in that gap that we are being prepared for healthier people to come into our lives. One of my biggest universe moments or god moments, whatever the heck you want to call it, moments happened on my 25th birthday. I had just started really delving into this work, and I spent my birthday alone. I told myself, well, I'm going to do something I always wanted to do. And I took myself to the New York Aquarium. And there was an exhibit of Beluga Whales. I have always loved whales. I was always so into whales when I was a little girl, and I went to the back of the exhibit, and there was this small porthole. And I walked up to the porthole, and this whale came by me. This beluga whale came by me, and then it came, swam around the tank, and came up the second time and pressed its eye against the window of this little porthole so that me and the whale were looking at each other. Sometimes when we celebrate who we are, there are people in our lives who don't want to celebrate us with us, and there can be that lag in between. And for me, that day, my best friend was that whale. And I will never, ever, ever forget that moment. And it stayed with me for a long time. My birth on that day with kind of the most unexpected creature I could have imagined. "You are a child of God. You are beautiful. You are a delight. You are a joy. You do not have to try harder. You do not have to be better. You do not have to be perfect or be anything. Anything that you are not. Your beauty is in you just as you are in each moment. It's time to celebrate that when you have a success when you accomplish something, enjoy it. Pause, reflect, rejoice. Too long you have a listen to the admonishments. Not to feel good about what you have done, lest you travel downward, downward to the road of arrogance. You're not arrogant; you're just celebrating you. Celebration is a high form of praise, of gratitude to the universe for the beauty of its creation. To enjoy and celebrate the good does not mean it will be taken from you."  Oh my God, I love that sentence so much because I always thought, well, if I get too excited, then it means it's going to go away. That's such fucking bullshit. "To celebrate is to delight in the gift to show gratitude. Celebrate your relationships, celebrate the lessons from the past, and the love and the warmth that is there today, even if it is you giving it to you. Enjoy the beauty of others and their connection to you. Celebrate all that is in your life. Celebrate all that is good and celebrate you." Be your own best friend. Take yourself out to somewhere you want to be you and only you and celebrate it.

Valeria Vergara is a senior research scientist at Raincoast Conservation Foundation where she co-directs the Cetacean Conservation Research Program. Her main focus? Beluga Whales. Originally hailing from Argentia, Valeria studied canids- specifically coyotes and foxes- during her undergrad and masters degree. It wasn't until her PhD that she switched to the marine world.  Valeria is so passionate about her work, and shares insight into what beluga whale research looks like, including spending weeks at camp with these creatures. A narwhal who strayed from his Arctic habitat was taken in by beluga whales, showing up each year since 2016 in the Saint Lawrence River. Now, researchers are watching to see if the unusual pod could produce a baby “narluga” — a cross between a narwhal and a beluga whale. Whale researcher Robert Michaud tells us more.

Theclimate there has long winters and is quite cold. These whales eat many typesof fish, shrimp, crabs, and krill. Like most other whales, the way they findfood is by foraging in the water. The beluga whale is big, so it doesn't have many naturalpredators, but polar bears and killer whales prey on them. The way it defends itselfis by blending into the ice caps. But the beluga whale is actually quite afriendly animal. They have a population of around 150,000 individuals. Thesebelugas live for around 30-50 years in the wild, and can start mating by theage of 7-9. Scientists have called whales the smallest whale species. Evenstill, they are still pretty large. They have a length of 14 feet and weighapproximately 3,000 pounds. It is a moon white color and has a bulbous head,and chubby torso. For wild suzhou i'm palm tree and thank you for listening.
