with @rhhackett @smc90 @stephbzinn @tim_orgIn this fun hallway-style conversation, a16z crypto's Sonal Chokshi, Robert Hackett, Tim Sullivan, and Stephanie Zinn discusses picks from our latest annual summer reading list, as well as evergreen/ Lindy picks that show up on our what-we're-reading lists again and again. We also share our top picks of all time. Throughout, we also discuss HOW we read — whether audiobooks count as reading or listening, graphic novels, read-alouds; on multiple modes of reading; and technologies for reading and how they have changed us over time. Which books are better as movies and TV shows, and games too? Also, are collaboratively-filtered recommendations via family or friends really that great? What other heuristics — and anti-heuristics! — do we use to read? Finally, WHY do we read?? Is mythology and fantasy filling a hole left by religion? Wherefore nonfiction vs. fiction... or seemingly new genres such as "infotainment," "romantasy," and others? From Shakespeare to Prince Harry to erstwhile seafarers to modern mermaids, this episode is a rollicking ride — and love letter — to all things books, and reading, from the a16z crypto editorial team and Andreessen Horowitz. Curiosity is magic, after all!
Hello :) Of course it's the New Year, and as such, the travel world is plastered with lists of ‘where to go in 2024', ‘best places to visit in 2024', and the like. Now, I have to say I've never been terribly fond of these sorts of things on a fundamental level for a number of reasons. I mean, sure they provide a good quick way of inspiring people, especially people who are relatively new to travel, but sometimes I feel that they tend to be quite … well, have a listen and see if you agree with me. Topics discussed in this episode are: * Back to Glasgow for re-coloured hair * My eyes are getting old * Time Out's "The World's Best Cities For 2024" * Great Cities are Big and Western * Forbes' "Where To Travel And Avoid The Crowds In 2024" * What does 'lesser-visited' even mean? * British Vogue's "Best Places To Travel in 2024" * National Geographic's "The Cool List 2024" - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/culture/article/uk-cool-list-2024 * CNN's "Best Destinations To Visit in 2024" - https://edition.cnn.com/travel/best-destinations-to-visit-2024/index.html * Conclusions A PDF transcript of this podcast is available. As always, if you have anything to say about the topic, or indeed about my podcasting in general, leave a comment or let me know. I have a newsletter with extra content, and where I'll be mentioning future podcast episodes if you want to make your own contribution. I also have a Patreon - if you like what you hear, and want to access exclusive content (or just to show your appreciation), then head on over. This year, Beyonce blessed fans with her album, “Renaissance,” the Daniels — Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — released the surreal trip of a movie “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” and Bad Bunny released banger after banger after banger. And those were just some of the brightest cultural moments that we couldn't stop talking about. 2022 had its dark side, too — who could forget Will Smith's slap or the racist rants of Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West?Today, we review both the highs and lows of Hollywood, music, culture and more. This week, we launch a new mini-series: The Resties Required Reading List. Our goal is to curate and contextualize a "must play" list of 25 games released between 1980 to 2020. These aren't the best games or even our favorite games. They're the games that should be experienced by everyone who wants a fundamental appreciation of the medium. They're the games that will give you a richer connection with every other game you play. Throughout 2022 and 2023 we'll publish new entries in the series, each episode focusing on a five-year period. Episodes will be sporadic and non-chronological. To kick things off, we've selected 2005-2009. Let us know what you think of the series and your personal reading list at @thebestiespod on Twitter.
Best-of lists are not the simple celebrations they are laid to be. They are a path to almost guaranteed paid advertising and a low-level example of manipulative targeting to the mass.
Brian and Murdock run down quick lists of their favorite songs, artists and albums of the past year.

This week, Mousetalgia hosts our annual "Best of" episode - but since 'Twenty was such a dumpster fire, we've decided to share our bests of a lifetime of Disney fandom. Topics include favorite movies (Parent Trap? The Haunted Mansion?), and our favorite television shows (The Mandalorian, Wonderful World of Disney). We also discuss our favorite merch, including items from Disneyland's 50th anniversary and the Tronorail. Of course, we discuss favorite Disney foods, including mentions of Club 33, Blue Bayou, Napa Rose, and 21 Royal. Also, our favorite books, our top experiences with our Disney fandom, our awkward "Oswald" moments - and more.

This is a strange one, listeners, as the boys compare and contrast various jazz "best-of" lists for the 2010's and then let you, the listener, "behind the curtain" as they decide how to populate the next four shows of the podcast. Mike's rubric: something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Having already discussed 250 (count 'em) albums from the 2010's, can our intrepid podcasters find a "Kind of Blue Killer" from the last decade? And will any of us be around for episode 300? Tune in to find out. (Pop matters touches on Sly Stone, Badfinger, Daryl Hall, and Captain Beefheart.)
