If we could recommend one skill for people to develop, it would be self-awareness. Self-awareness lets people recognise the things they do best so they can double down on those. It also helps you accept your weaknesses. The moment you decide to accept your weaknesses and bet on your strengths, things change. Elizabeth McCourt, Executive Leadership Coach, shares her thoughts with our CEO Lewis Maleh on the importance of self-awareness in leaders.

This is the final episode of the show! After 128 episodes, I have decided to practice that I preach, and make the tough call on priorities and pressures in my life, which means this show will be setting with the sun today. Whether that's forever or for now is not relevant because "forever" is not happening today. With all the demands on my time, I have been facing my own burnout – something I've had as a central theme in many episodes in this show. To protect and love myself, I've taken an inventory of all the things that I am committed to, where they are in the grand scheme of building toward my goals, whether they've served their purpose, and how I might be able to move forward without them. Though it was a hard decision I've grappled with for several months, ending the show here made a lot of sense. Do a Day is not going anywhere, however, with all the resources at your fingertips, as ever. You can still get the book in paperback, Kindle, Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook and more. You can still do the Do a Day Masterclass, or sign up for 1-on-1 coaching with me. And the entire back catalog of episodes of the show will still be available for you to go back, listen to, and grow from. With all the stories and inspiration in the 127 episodes that I've released before this final one, I know there is at least one spark that every person in the world could use to start the flame that lets you Go Out and Do It! Respect for all my past guests: Season 1 I kicked the show off sharing the story of Do a Day. Charlie Gilkey shares about how being smart makes you strong. Evan Ruggiero reminds us through his cancer batter that rising up even when half of your world vanishes is possible. Amy Schuber taught us that you are the inspiration you seek. Ryan Caligiuri shared his mantra that there are no set backs, only set ups for what's next. One of my favorite artists, MC YOGI, talked about how all things grow in darkness Anne Sugar shared her battle with cancer as a way to see how you can trust your body even when it betrays you. Chris Wirth hit on his message of never quitting on living the life you deserve. David Ralph reminded us about the power in our lives if we connect the dots. Claude Silver shared her story (for the first time) of why she is who she is today and how that's showed her the importance of Heart in leadership. Elizabeth McCourt talked about the empowerment we can take from building our own resilience. Josh LaJaunie shared his story of overcoming extreme obesity--not just for himself, but for the world around him. Michael Nulty talked about his multiple suicide attempts and how he found rebirth out of depression. Mark Metry shared the importance of taking responsibility for your life and what you can achieve as a new person. My good friend, Aaron Keith Hawkins, talked about how we need to have influence over ourselves if we want to influence anyone else. Kelsey Abbott helped us Find Our Awesome through self-confidence and curiosity. She also gave me a quote I've used almost daily, "What you I say is about me. What you hear is about you." Dorie Clark reminds us of the important of perseverance and consistency if we want to achieve our greatest goals. Sonya Looney, world female mountain bike endurance champion, was just awesome, but had a key message around vulnerability and honesty with ourselves. She also gave me another gem of an idea around being stuck. Rather than being negative about the feeling, she recognizes it's a sign of something big being about to happen. Tim Fargo talked about the humility and balance we can find in unexpected places like failure. The amazing Dr. Jason Brooks shared the importance of being dedicated to finding your purpose and its transformative power on our lives. Jen Arnold shared her story around food and her weight and how that inspired her to change how we look at wellness and knowing ourselves. Lee Havern shared how he overcome depression and recognized the interconnectedness between mental and physical wellness. Emmitt Muckles left us charged up and recognizing that prosperity has nothing to do with money. Terri Levine, who lives in extreme, debilitating pain, showed how you can still find power and heart and use that to create something. Leigh Martinuzzi talked about finding his hidden Why and what that can unlock. The great Dick Vitale shared a power packed message of inspiration and making the choice to get up and move forward no matter what hits you, as he's done throughout his life. Season 2 Steve Gordon showed how falling down may be necessary to reach new heights Robb Holman talked about the power of letting go so we can find meaning and purpose Lindsey Heiserman inspired us to not let our past stories be part of our right now Charise Colbert shared her journey coming out of domestic abuse Sara Quiriconi talked to us about how to live free of all the cancers in our life Syd Finkelstein on how to be a Super Boss leader Ariana Robinson Danquah shared how to rise up when you're stuck in the middle Jon DeWaal gripped us with his story of falling off a roof and how that helped him see how to get through life's toughest transitions John Zeratsky talked about what he discovered to achieve the most, and it has nothing to do with productivity Josh Perry taught the power of gratitude even in the face of life's greatest challenges if you want to come through them thriving Mark Crandall shared his trauma story to help us see how facing our trauma's allows for growth Adam Schaeuble got us all fired up, and he also inspired with his approach to reimagining your life – and making it come true Sandy Vo talked about her journey to find clarity and peace despite a foundation of turmoil Cornell Thomas is the epitome of the "What's Next?" attitude winning over the "Why Me?" mentality Sandra Younger taught us her Come Back approach to be a victor, not a victim of tragedy Jenn Swanson talked about her journey off loss, gratitude and realization that you are your best investment Howard Jacobson shared how losing his father inspired his mission to fight diseases of ignorance with the wisdom of lifestyle Brooke Siem retold her amazing journey navigating her way out of a life of medication for mental illness into a life of discovery Tanur Badgley showed how to become a person of purpose through his journey starting with a fall off the side of a mountain Gary Bertwistle talked about the power of authenticity and discovering your mojo Frank King went into how thoughts of suicide taught him to go after what he really wanted, and why so many people need support as they face moments that lead them to these thoughts Mary Shores talked about the power of serving others as she went from dented to thriving Nick Elvery shared his journey from addiction to peak performance and what sparked the change Jaime Jay got vulnerable as he retold his story of multiple experiences with homelessness to being in a place of gratitude and contentment Dai Manuel talked about the importance of living as you need to, from your own perspective Blaire Palmer showed how the greatest thing we can bet on is ourselves Season 3 Dov Baron forced us to look at what's really going on, magnifying it, and then using that insight to truly grow Episode 056. Transporting From Darkness to Your Future Vision with Sarah Centrella Episode 057. What fulfills you? What are you passionate about? What is success to you? These are examples of what executive leadership coaches Jennifer Davis and Elizabeth McCourt help their clients to define. This episode of the Roots of Leadership is jam packed with leadership secrets and advice from Anthony's two guests: Jennifer, the founder and CEO of Jennifer Davis Coaching, and Elizabeth, the founder and CEO of the McCourt Leadership Group. These two successful women have a laundry list of individual achievements. Elizabeth recently released her novel Sin in the Big Easy and Anthony asks her how she balances all of her different adventures. One of Elizabeth's secrets to keeping balanced is to center all of her efforts on her core beliefs - to make mindful choices, to make meaningful impact, and to exercise resilience in everything she does. Both Elizabeth and Jennifer stepped away from corporate jobs to pursue careers in coaching and leadership development. Jennifer recalls the shifting point in her life, when her family went through a difficult experience and describes it as the first time things did not go her way. While doing some soul searching, she realized that what fulfilled her the most is helping others. She went from being a “mostly recovered workaholic” to becoming a servant leader who coaches her clients seek their maximum fulfillment. Elizabeth and Jennifer connected on social media and they formed their relationship on the key principal of sharing information. They found similarities sharing that their individual journeys led them to want to work with other people to help them find their joy, passion and energy. The two coaches established a partnership and collaborated to inspire and help one another. They believe it is important to embrace change and motivate their clients to go down unexpected paths. Armed with the deep desire to help others, Jennifer and Elizabeth encourage their clients to define their own versions of success. I repeated my thirty seconds of speeding up and thirty seconds of rest method, sprinting around the park's track. I was panting hard when I rounded the bend coming back to where I'd started. I veered off the track, my sneakers crunching on the gravel, and I slowed to a walk heading towards the playground area to hit the drinking fountain over by the swings. The swings were moving from the tiniest breeze, but otherwise all was quiet. The water in the fountain was warm, and I let it cascade over the side of the bowl for a minute. I tested it with my hand, then leaned down and slurped some of the metallic-tasting, still-warm water. I closed my eyes and let the water splash into my face, shaking it off like a dog and wiping my eyes with my shirt. "Over here, please help me!" A woman's voice yelped through sobs. -- Elizabeth McCourt, Sin in the Big Easy I am delighted to chat with debut mystery author, Elizabeth McCourt. An executive coach and former trial attorney, she brings a realism to the story, and not just the courtroom scenes. Elizabeth brings nuance to all her characters, but especially her protagonist, Abby Callahan, in the first of a projected series, Sin in the Big Easy. Check out Elizabeth's website here (she's also on Twitter and Instagram), but also don't miss her TEDx talk, which appropriately enough is on the burden of carrying secrets. She also gives a shout-out to one of my favorite reads, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Woot!  Sin in the Big Easy also deals with human trafficking, which is a terrifying and important issue. I can't help but mention Peg Brantley's book, Trafficked. Since I interviewed Peg, it has won several awards and continues to add to the national discussion. Also, if you have teenagers in the house, a good way to open up the discussion would be to check out author Pamela Samuels Young's YA version of her own novel, #Anybody's Daughter, which deals with domestic trafficking and teen safety. If you want to learn more or if you know someone who might need help, CNN recently published a list of organizations around the world who are fighting human trafficking. The nonprofit Elizabeth mentions in New Orleans that helps women who have survived trafficking is Eden House. Their mission is "Heal, Empower, Dream," and they offer prevention education as well as resources and recovery services. As always, if you'd rather read than listen, a transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura ********************************************************************* Transcript of Interview with Elizabeth McCourt Laura Brennan: Elizabeth McCourt is a certified executive coach, top-ranked financial recruiter, professional speaker -- and now, mystery author. Her debut thriller, Sin in the Big Easy, introduces attorney Abby Callahan, a woman whose personal life is even more complicated than her most recent case. Elizabeth, thank you for joining me. Elizabeth McCourt: Hey, Laura. Thank you so much for having me on your podcast. LB: So you have a fascinating background. EM: Oh, thank you. Thank you. Yes, everyone said to me, really? Mystery writer? Where did that come from? LB: Well, now, how did you start out? Did you start out in the financial market? EM: I started out right after college at Morgan Stanley, as an analyst. But then I went to law school. I didn't like that so much, and so I went to law school in New Orleans and fell in love with the city. Although I didn't stay there; moved out west and then, sort of full-circle, became a headhunter and then a coach. But this love of New Orleans and writing was with me throughout my life I would say. And so it just seemed, as this book evolved, to have it in New Orleans and use my legal background in some way just made sense and worked for the book. LB: Yes, one of those lesser-known uses of law school is getting to write legal thrillers. EM: Exactly! Yes, I feel like I have to use my legal background somewhere and writing i...

Elizabeth McCourt is a certified leadership coach, speaker and writer committed to helping people embrace their whole self and become the authentic leader they are capable of being. Prior to forming McCourt Leadership Group, Elizabeth was a top ranked executive recruiter in financial services for 16 years, working with Wells Fargo, UBS and Ameriprise, among other clients. Since 2013, she's been invited to the prestigious Recruiter's Roundtable with On Wall Street magazine. Her former career was as a trial lawyer where she worked on the plaintiff's side for product liability and class actions in both federal and state court, including with the New Orleans Castano Group on the class action Tobacco litigation. Since 2014, she has presented a case study at the yearly ESMT Coaching Colloquia at ESMT Business School in Berlin, Germany. In 2015, she presented a poster case study at Harvard University's Institute of Coaching.  She's been published in the Philosophy of Coaching: An International Journal, where she is also on the Editorial Board. Elizabeth speaks at a variety conferences and events including The Most Powerful Women's LEAD Banking, Women's Financial Advisor Forum, The Quorum Initiative Leadership Conference, NonprofitPRO conference, the US Army Recruiting Battalion, Smith in the City, and also gave a TEDx talk entitled, “Why You Should Spill Your Secrets.”  For fun she is an avid triathlete, longtime yogi and writes and publishes essays and fiction. In March, 2018, she published her first novel, Sin in the Big Easy, by Post Hill Press. In our conversation today, Elizabeth demonstrates qualities of an authentic leader, using stories of her own experience in the corporate world as well as personally. She describes distinctions in leadership, cultural issues, resilience, and how to bring your whole person into the role of leader. She further emphasizes the importance of empathy as a leader, both to others and yourself, while understanding the deeper motivations and values that drive performance. Whether you are an aspiring leader or desire to improve your effectiveness in your current leadership role, Elizabeth will provide valuable insight and practical tips for being an authentic leader who causes positive transformation within teams. Key Takeaways Sometimes you have to ask the question (as a coach) that's going to get you fired. Find leaders and mentors that you want to emulate and then develop your own style as you learn from them. If you really want to be an impactful and engaged leader you've got to use all of your experience – your whole self. Empathy is essential as a leader. What you learn from failure can be more valuable than what you learn from success. Use comparison as inspiration but not as a ‘not good enough' mode. As a coach you don't necessarily need to pull people out of the darkness right away. Have the courage to stand there with them in the darkness. Sometimes we need to stand in the darkness to be able to appreciate the light. Unbreakable Success Podcast, Episode 45 Elizabeth McCourt - Have the Courage to Embrace Your Unique Path to Success. One of your greatest advantages is your unique story. It's one of a kind. No one else can claim or leverage it to their advantage quite like you. A lot of us have this idea in our head that there's a 'right way' to create our success. You know what I mean. I've also suffered from that illusion that I couldn't have a certain life because I didn't have the right background, education, career or wasn't the right age to start something new. The idea that you need to be something to become something is total bs. Elizabeth McCourt is one of those people you have to love, because she's one of those living inspirations who shows us how amazing life can be when we refuse to 'live in the box' that people expect us to stay in. Elizabeth is the founder of McCourt Leadership Group, and her path to success has nothing to do with the linear expectation of onlookers. She's created a unique that includes jumps from a career in finance, to practicing law, to a leadership expert with her own coaching practice. Most recently, she's now a published fiction novelist of a brilliant legal thriller called Sin in the Big Easy. On top of that, she spends time traveling, public speaking, doing triathlons and more. Join us in Episode 45 as we discuss the importance of defining our own path, and exercising our creativity instead of settling for the expected. Elizabeth has earned her B.S. in Finance from the University of Maryland, J.D. from Loyola University in New Orleans, Natural Resources Certificate from the University of New Mexico, and MFA in Creative Writing from SUNY Stony Brook. She's also a CPCC certified coach through the "Harvard" of coaching schools, The Coaches Training Institute (CTI). You're going to enjoy the many lessons that Elizabeth and I share in this episode, and I hope it gets you thinking about your unique story, and what it is you really want to be doing for the rest of your life. It may not be what everyone else is expecting from you, and that's ok! By the way, Elizabeth gave one of my favorite TEDx talks called Why You Should Spill Your Secrets. I'm very proud of my new friend Elizabeth, and am happy to share her with you in this Episode. If you haven't already subscribed to Unbreakable Success in iTunes, this is a great time to do it! Through hearing the inspiring stories and tips from the greats, we will all find it easier to stay motivated. Elizabeth McCourt's positive spirit is impossible to miss in today's episode. She's quite a remarkable woman and we are honored to have had her on our show today. One of my favorite quotes in the history of our podcast is in this episode, which comes from Hawaii, and it says "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." Simple words, with such a powerful message. That being Elizabeth's favorite quote, it only makes sense that the theme of today's episode is positivity. Elizabeth is a successful author, speaker, coach and so much more. She recently got her first novel published, and we couldn't be more excited for her. It's funny because she originally went to present another one of her books to the publishing company, but after casually mentioning that she had written a novel, the company asked to take a look and loved it.  She's all about taking non linear paths to success, and so are we.   Website: http://www.mccourtleadership.com/

We all have days when we think that we are not going to succeed in our goals in life and business. While it may be difficult to shift this mindset into something more productive, TEDx speaker, executive coach and sponsored triathlete Elizabeth McCourt shows you how an endurance athlete's perspective can provide you the right mental training that is guaranteed to have maximum impact on your success. In today's podcast, Elizabeth talks about how she used her experiences in her different career paths and interests, ranging from law to financial services to writing to even endurance training, to mold herself into an executive coach that has helped leaders and teams work at their top performance. She also discusses how her TEDx Talk “Why You Should Spill Your Secrets” has touched many people around the world, especially since it was something that has helped her connect better to the clients she helps everyday. She gives as well some tips and pointers that she has learned as an athlete that she has found applicable to any business scenario, and some common challenges she has helped her successful clients overcome. No matter what industry you are in or what kind of person you are, you too can benefit from the discipline and mental training of a seasoned triathlete. Let Elizabeth show you how to achieve your goals with just the right mindset.   In this episode, you'll learn: • How an endurance athlete's training can be applied to a business setting. • How to harness all your experience in different fields to build a career that you love. • The connection between your secrets and your self-esteem. • Effective ways to silence the little voice inside you that tells you that you are going to fail. Tweetables: • [Spilling secrets] gets you to connect with people and impact people in a positive way by letting them see you in a more honest way. • I think resilience and training yourself to be more resilient are the key tools to leadership. • Shift your mindset, train yourself to believe that you can, and push yourself to try things that you don't think that you can do. • It's all about getting your mind straight so that you can accomplish whatever it is on your list of what you want to accomplish. Big Takeaways: • While having a lot of career paths and interests can be overwhelming, all the things you've done in your life will eventually and inevitably lead you to where you're supposed to be going. • Sharing your secrets is a good way to connect with other people and helps you be more authentic to yourself. • Everyone, even the most successful business-people, have their own issues to work through. A good mindset, such as that of an endurance athlete, is definitely beneficial in helping you build resiliency to get through all the tough times.
