For 35 years, she was labeled sensitive, dramatic, weird, too much. But she wasn't any of those things—she was autistic. And no one saw it.In this raw and powerful episode, we pull back the curtain on how autism is profoundly underdiagnosed in women—and why. We explore how masking, misdiagnosis, and outdated diagnostic tools have led to generations of girls being missed, misunderstood, and misnamed. You'll hear Deena's story—what everyone got wrong, what finally clicked, and what it's like to be diagnosed late in life. This episode isn't just for people who know they're autistic. It's for anyone who's ever felt like an alien in the world. For the girls who were called difficult. For the women who never felt like they fit. For the parents wondering about their child. For the friend who's finally starting to see the patterns. This one will shift how you see autism—and how you see yourself. Our resident psychologist, Dr. Tanya Holthus, is back to talk to us about how to not raise a narcissist. First, she builds the framework of how a narcissist is made. She unpacks the nine criteria for narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) in the DSM-5-TR. Dr. Holthus describes what must be present and prevalent in order to make an NPD diagnosis and from her clinical practice and experience, what she's seen in terms of how NPD starts. This episode reveals not only characteristics of narcissism, but helping children to develop healthy emotions and how to cultivate this in children. (And some tips on what not to do!) She shares practical tips and resources that can help support parents, partners and people impacted by narcissists. These include Big Little Feelings, Dr. Becky Kennedy's book, Good Inside, encouraging different types of therapy, and some information that you might find helpful on Dr. Terrence Real's website. More about Dr. Tanya Holthus: Tanya is a licensed psychologist and is here for you. She sees most everyone for most everything. She enjoys working with a wide variety of clients and offers multiple services including therapy, coaching, and supervision. She meets you wherever you are at and applies what will fit for you in the moment. She specializes in healing trauma and helping people with many types of issues, including post-traumatic stress, attachment/connection, emotional/relational abuse, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. She is most passionate about helping people overcome relationships involving narcissistic abuse and strengthening parent-child relationships. She also has a special place in her heart for people suffering with fertility issues. She views things through a trauma lens and tends to weave this into all of her work. She provides psychoeducation, teaches how to navigate healthy boundaries, guides healing, and will help you gain clarity to bring peace in your life. She uses an integrative approach of many modalities to fit the unique needs of each person. Some of these modalities include parental coaching, Filial Play Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Adaptive Internal Relations (AIR) Network. People who have worked with her have described her as warm, compassionate, easy to talk to, empathetic, and reliable. She loves her work as a psychologist. She will go to bat for you and will work hard for you. She has been doing this a long time and is confident that she can help with any presenting concern you may have. Today we're discussing several parenting influencers who have jumped into giving advice on how to teach kids about Pride Month. We respond to some of the things they've said regarding Pride and give you some encouragement and advice in response. One of these accounts is Dr. Becky's "Good Inside;" she recently posted about how to encourage your kids to accept openness and tolerance in relation to Pride. We explain why we shouldn't be teaching our kids to be open to and tolerant of everything and why it's important for kids to orient themselves according to the truth of the world. We talk about the danger and stupidity of the phrase “love is love” and look at a Parents magazine article on going along with your child's “coming out.” Then we talk about "Big Little Feelings," another parenting influencer who posted before Pride Month, pushing the propaganda that your child will commit self-harm if you don't allow them to submit to gender ideology. This week Attempting Fatherhood is Nick Runyon. He's a former pilot, turned founder of The Archibald Project, an orphan and adoption advocacy group that focuses on the media side of information, creating stories, videos, etc. which help bring awareness to adoption and the orphan crisis. When we were thinking of adoption, we watched one of their mini-docs which profiled a birth mom and adoptive family at the hospital over a 48-hour period and it was profound. We talked about how "brutal" he and his wife's infertility was, how hard it can be when you are placed with three kids who don't speak your language, and the universal truth of struggling to get our kids to sleep! Follow Archibald Project for more. And the account I reference in the opening is Big Little Feelings. Of course you can be following us on Instagram and NOW NOW NOW on YouTube as well. Listen to Episode 096: It's been ONE year since we moved into our beautiful little home here on the CC. I can't actually quite believe we are celebrating this anniversary already. If you haven't already please listen to the back story - the manifesting and calling in of this home and relocation.  This has been a year of so much abundance, ease, flow and joy. Integrating, recalibrating and attuning especially to this home, the land and the nature we are surrounded by. Cycling through the seasons and rooting in. A year of expansion and growth in my business, through my own awakening of spiritual gifts and talents, in community and connection and so much more. In this year I have launched three programs, coached countless women, hosted multiple in-person and live workshops, co-facilitated a retreat for the divine Lorraine Murphy. Travelled twice (pre lockdown!). Learnt to garden and grow veggies. For those of you interested in knowing what I've studied/explored over the last 18 months see below. Some of this I've been immersed in for longer (and in fact the list is longer than this!) There has also been quite regular Kinesiology, Acupuncture and other forms of self-care.  But I just wanted to honour these people for their contribution to my mind-body-soul growth and healing.  I'm studied Reiki with Jason McGrice, Queen School with Julie Tenner, Deepened my training in Magdalene Frequency, Womb Yoga and Energetics with Ana Otero. Worked with hypnotherapist Rachel Crethar and my own secret weapon Julia Byrne from Soul Mastery. Business Energetics with Brittany Eastman. Marriage Counselling with Sarah Tolmie. Parenting course with Big Little Feelings. Gardening with The Healthy Patch. Tune in to the rest of the episode to help me celebrate this incredible year.  Subscribe: Itunes | Soundcloud Beautiful one, thank you for being here and listening. It would mean the world to me if you would hit subscribe and stay connected to One Woke Mama – join me on this journey of awakening. Your feedback, comments, reviews and shares would always be gratefully received but also help us to reach more mamas who need support as they navigate the choppy waters of motherhood and all it asks of us.
