Twenty-six years ago, Danny bought Chris Bourke's book Something So Strong, which tells the highly entertaining and informative story of Crowded House.  So much about the book stayed with Danny and gave him some very important tips about how to navigate the music industry.  All these years later, Danny got to talk to Chris Bourke about Crowded House, his books Something So Strong (1998), Blue Smoke (2010) and Good-bye Maoriland (2017) and his work at AudioCulture.  Chris is like a living library of NZ music.  Great chat! www.dontgiveup.co.nz Support the show

Our guest this week has a passion for creating restaurants that redefine the dining experience. With the innate ability to take a concept and turn it into reality, she drives innovation in the industry. Welcome to the show, Senior Director of Design & Concept Development at Union Square Events, Jessica Gidari!Dan Ryan hosts Jessica to delve into her approach to creating unique restaurant experiences and her understanding of true hospitality. Jessica shares the importance of collecting the dots, discusses her experiences with Union Square Hospitality, and explores the power of hospitality in all aspects of life and business.Takeaways: Hospitality is the act of doing something for someone rather than just doing it to them. While it may be customary to offer complimentary drinks, a customer may not want them, thus putting the customer in an awkward situation. Active listening and making connections are key elements in collecting valuable information. Utilizing these skills allows for effective networking and the facilitation of beneficial collaborations.Making meaningful connections with others can unlock the magic of building strong relationships, fostering teamwork, and enhancing personal growth. These connections create moments of excitement and shared understanding that can have a lasting impact.A cohesive combination of design, atmosphere, and narrative in a space can create a powerful and memorable experience. Ensuring all elements align and speak the same language enhances the overall impact and leaves a lasting impression on visitors.Prompt problem-solving is crucial in the hospitality industry, ensuring a seamless experience for guests even in challenging situations. By swiftly addressing issues and offering suitable alternatives, restaurants can uphold customer satisfaction.Hospitality should start by warmly welcoming guests and understanding their purpose for visiting. By paying attention to their cues and preferences, you can offer appropriate suggestions to enhance their experience.Hospitality is crucial in corporate environments, as it creates a sense of belonging and pride for employees while enhancing their overall experience. Incorporating innovative food and beverage concepts helps foster a positive and engaging work environment.Quote of the Show: “Hospitality is when you do something for someone rather than to someone.” - Jessica GidariLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessica-gidari-65906120/ Website: https://www.unionsquareevents.com/consulting/ Website: https://www.jgidari.com/ Shout Outs:00:43 - Danny Meyer: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dhmeyer/ 07:32 - Shake Shack: https://shakeshack.com/#/ 07:33 - Union Square Cafe: https://www.unionsquarecafe.com/ 07:36 - Blue Smoke: https://www.bluesmoke.com/ 07:42 - Gramercy Tavern: https://www.gramercytavern.com/ 16:58 - JP Morgan Chase: https://www.jpmorganchase.com/ 17:24 - Foster and Partners: https://www.fosterandpartners.com/ 38:23 - Hospitality Quotient:https://hq.ushg.com/ 44:06 - Arizona State University: https://www.asu.edu/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

It's a Rare Triple Play with No Crying In Baseball Author, Erin Carlson, Smoke Sweats BBQ's, Anthony Scerri, and Blue Smoke's Executive Chef, Bret Lunsford Erin Carlson is a culture and entertainment journalist, and the author of three Hollywood history books.  She joins us to discuss her latest project, No Crying in Baseball: The Inside Story of A League of Their Own: Big Stars, Dugout Drama, and a Home Run for Hollywood.  The book is an outstanding look at the people, including the cast, and the story involved with the making of the movie which more than 30 years after its release has become a beloved classic.  Erin's work appears in many publications, including Vanity Fair and Town and Country. Anthony Scerri is the founder and owner of Smoke Sweats BBQ.  Based in Brooklyn, NY, Anthony is taking his love for barbecue and with many marketing tools, including having barbecue popups, he is bringing his unique style to the New York and surrounding areas masses.  We met Anthony at Jimmy Carbone's Pig Island event and were privileged to try his take on Cheeto's Pie.  Anthony is a fellow New York Mets fan and so we commiserated on the lackluster season.  For more on Anthony and Smoke Sweats BBQ go to https://www.smokesweats.com/ Bret Lunsford is the executive chef of Blue Smoke, a New York restaurant which offers outstanding barbecue. Up until recently, Blue Smoke also had a location at Cit Field which is home to the New York Mets.  We were surprised to learn that Bret is a relative of Baseball Hall of Fame member, Ralph Kiner who did not play for the Mets, but was an intricate part of their broadcasting team for more than 50 years. Bret at one time was planning on becoming a school music teacher; earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Southern Mississippi.  The food industry is lucky he followed his greater passion and after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Bret eventually made his way to Blue Smoke. We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Eric Gabrynowicz, vice president of culinary for Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar, fell in love with knives and fire when he worked in a restaurant kitchen as a teenager. From there, he graduated from the CIA, worked for Danny Meyer at Union Square Cafe and Blue Smoke, and eventually helmed his own kitchen at North Restaurant in Westchester County, N.Y. But Gabrynowicz has always been obsessed with the flavors and passion that go into Southern food. When he landed at Tupelo Honey, he wanted to preserve the Southern signatures that built the restaurant's reputation, but reinvigorate both the food and bar menu with elevated ingredients, techniques and presentation, and add his own culinary stamp. The polished-casual concept now has 23 locations across the U.S., but the menu plays as well in Idaho and Indianapolis as it does in Georgia and North Carolina—the state where it all started. Listen as Chef Gabrynowicz describes how he has brought Tupelo's Southern menu to new heights but learned not to mess with favorites like the mac and cheese, how the refreshed food and drink lineup has boosted sales and profits, and why he is so committed to bringing an end to childhood hunger.

Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnFinger Eleven, a Canadian rock band, has made a mark in alternative music with their genre-defying sound. Known for their hits like "Paralyzer" and "One Thing," they've captivated fans with anthemic melodies, introspective ballads, and energetic performances. With over two decades of music, Finger Eleven continues to push boundaries and redefine the alternative rock landscape.Craft Recordings pays tribute to the enduring career of Finger Eleven with the release of their first collection of hit singles, titled "Greatest Hits." Spanning over two decades, this album showcases the band's diverse range with beloved fan favorites, including their multi-platinum hit "Paralyzer" and the Juno-nominated "One Thing." Chart-topping tracks such as "Falling On" and "Living in a Dream" are also featured. As a special treat, the 12-track set includes a previously-unreleased cover of Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine," a long-standing live staple, as well as Finger Eleven's first new single in over seven years, titled "Together Right." The single is available for streaming and downloading today.Frontman Scott Anderson explains the meaning behind "Together Right," stating that it symbolizes unity and explores the strength of bonds between people. The song's optimistic-sounding chorus masks a desperate plea for another party to stick around and face challenges together. Recorded in Toronto last year with drummer/producer Steve Molella, the track packs a punch with its anthemic guitar-driven hooks and high-energy handclaps. The "Greatest Hits" album will be released on CD and digitally on June 16th, with the vinyl edition following on August 25th. This vinyl release marks the band's first-ever venture into the vinyl format. A limited-edition Blue Smoke pressing will be exclusively available through the band's website and CraftRecordings.com. Additionally, indie record stores will carry an exclusive Yellow Marble variant. Fans can also find a collectible version of the CD with unique packaging at Walmart, along with a Walmart-exclusive Purple Smoke LP. All formats are available for pre-order now.Reflecting on this momentous retrospective release, Anderson shares his excitement, stating that after six albums and over 20 years together, Finger Eleven is thrilled to finally release a greatest hits album. He emphasizes the band's dedication to selecting the right songs, determining the running order, and curating a vinyl version that complements the beautiful new art created by James Black.Finger Eleven, one of Canada's best-selling bands and Juno Award-winning rockers, has forged a lasting legacy with their genre-defying sound. From cathartic metal and alt-rock balladry to danceable funk and power pop, their music consistently surprises and engages fans. The band's story began in 1990 when Scott Anderson, Rick Jackett, James Black, Sean Anderson, and drummer Rob Gommerman (later replaced by Rich Beddoe) started playing together in high school. They released their debut album, "Letters from Chutney," under the name "Rainbow Butt Monkeys" in 1995, before adopting the name Finger Eleven for their subsequent LP, "Tip." The album caught the attention of Wind-up Records, who signed the band in 1997 and re-released "Tip" a year later.Through relentless touring with bands like Creed and Fuel, as well as participating in the Vans Warped Tour, Finger Eleven broke into the US market with singles like "Above," which became a Top 40 hit on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. They continued their momentum with "The Greyest of Blue Skies" (2000), featuring singles like "First Time" and "Drag You Down," which achieved Gold certification in Canada and reached No. 17 on This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.
