How do you navigate negotiations with your employer to change your role, the nature or base of your employment? How can we shift the optics around job share opportunities and other flexible work solutions within the insurance industry? In this episode, we are very pleased to be speaking with Emma Smith, a Senior Property Underwriter at Atrium Underwriters! In conversation with InsurSocial's Sandra Lewin, Emma explains why insurance was always her chosen career, her experience working in Singapore for 7 years, and the origins, flexibility and functionality of her current job share role. She highlights the importance of approaching negotiations with management armed with solutions rather than problems, with a lens on how any shift to your current position could ultimately prove beneficial to the business. Quote of the Episode “You continue to develop [and] expand your knowledge. I think you need to be reading the newspapers, seeing what's going on at a global level in different countries, because it all comes back to you; it can have an effect on the risks that you'll seen on your desk the next day. That's what I love about it: you get to do a little bit of everything within an underwriting role.” Emma crystallises that at any given point in your insurance career, you can never know anything about the industry. There is always more to learn, particularly given the extent to which our market is interwoven with external events. A key means by which we can highlight the exciting nature of an insurance career to those external to the industry is the vital socioeconomic function that insurance plays on a national and global scale. Key Takeaways A recurring theme for many guests on the podcast thus far is that in any insurance role, every day is a school day. One of the most exciting aspects of an insurance career, the emphasis of which could alter external perceptions of our industry, is the mutable nature of every role in the industry; no day will ever be the same. For example, Emma notes that, as an underwriter, she has to be a marketer, to analyse and price risks, to contemplate risk exposure, and much more. There is no standing still in this role, and as a people-based industry, every day is new and exciting. Yet, talent retention within insurance typically takes a huge hit amongst women in their thirties and forties. Both Emma and Sandra suggest that insurance should be exploring and investing in new flexible working opportunities to retain this talent and knowledge, and to ensure business continuity. Emma works in a job share; she and another underwriter share the role evenly and work for three days each week. This setup is rare in the industry, but it has proven extremely beneficial to both women, and to Atrium Underwriters. Both women come into work motivated, energised and committed, and their collective years of experience and understanding bolster their team's productive output. Emma was initially concerned about how misconceptions about working in a job share might affect her reputation within her business and the industry. She feared that people would perceive her as ‘just' working part-time or ‘only' in a job share, and that as a result of this discourse she would be taken less seriously. Yet, she hasn't found this to be the case. As both women are highly ambitious, their careers have grown. They always go the extra mile, and due to their shared trust and collaborative communication, they productively challenge and bounce off one another's ideas. If you are intrigued by a flexible work solution of this nature and would like to raise the topic with your employer, how should you approach this conversation? For Emma, it is key to come with the solution if you want the change. Do your research beforehand, and come up with a plan for how your proposition could work for the business. Examine examples in other industries, particularly at a senior level, to demonstrate how your proposal could ultimately be beneficial rather than obstructive. You shouldn't necessarily expect immediate acceptance: alternatively, approach the conversation with the question – ‘here is my situation, how can we make this work?'. If you want to find out more about job shares or alternative work solutions, reach out to Emma – her contact details are linked below! Best Moments/Key Quotes “[In] a job share, we essentially have two people doing one role. We do three days each, and have a crossover day on a Wednesday. I work first part of the week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and my job share works Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.” “Do your research, come up with a plan of how you think it will work; what you need to make it work. Just think through, look at examples. There are some great examples in other industries where job shares have worked. At a very senior level, I think there's two ladies who hold one of the most senior positions in GCHQ as a job share. Do your research, find examples of how you can make it work, and how it has worked in either similar positions, or similar industries.” “For many at the beginning, [a job share] will be a solution to a problem. But actually, it could just be another offering that a company has to retain the staff.” “The power of a network is so strong. That's not just from a business perspective, but from a personal perspective as well… Sometimes we take our network for granted, and actually it is worth assessing, and reaching out to more people. The greater your network, the more knowledge you gain.” Resources Atrium Underwriters Ltd: https://www.atrium-uw.com/ About the Guest Emma Smith is a senior property underwriter at Atrium syndicate and is Chair of the recently established Women at Atrium network. In today's episode I sit down with my older sister Emma to bring to you part one of her three part motherhood Journey. Part one of Emma's motherhood story begins with an extremely real, raw & honest conversation about loss including the many kind of loss women experience but in particular her experience with a high risk genetic NIPT test for Klinefelter Syndrome. Klinefelter syndrome is a genetic condition that results when a boy is born with an extra copy of the X chromosome. Klinefelter syndrome is a genetic condition affecting males. Klinefelter syndrome may adversely affect testicular growth, resulting in smaller than normal testicles, which can lead to lower production of testosterone. The syndrome may also cause reduced muscle mass, reduced body and facial hair, and enlarged breast tissue. Most men with Klinefelter syndrome produce little or no sperm. Emma talks us through the rollercoaster of emotions she experienced during this pregnancy including the highs of falling pregnant for the first time & the lows of a positive result for klinefelter syndrome and further genetic testing such as an amniocentesis. Emma shares her battles with making the heartbreaking decision to discontinue the pregnancy via a surgical termination at 16 weeks and highlights some of the truths behind termination which is often not spoken about. I am so incredibly proud of Emma for coming on and sharing her story as it has taken her some time to feel comfortable to put herself out there. Both Emma and I hope that this conversations opens up a discussion about other forms of loss and some of the struggles women face who may receive a high risk genetic screen for their baby. as highlighted within this episode if you are someone who needs to reach out both Emma & myself are here. Another great resource is SANDS. Next week we will bring to you part two of her motherhood story including her labour + birth story with my nephew baby Cohen. Do you remember seeing a Child and Family Health Nurse after your bub was born? Who doesn't love a good birth story?? And wow! This one deserves a gold medal. Jess has a beautiful business @prettylittleblock.co offering hand cut and hand painted custom wooden block names. In Conversation with Fergus Ewing MSP & Emma Harper MSP Few sectors have been harder hit by Brexit than agriculture and farming. Drew sits down with Fergus Ewing MSP and Emma Harper MSP to talk about Westminster's role in the fate of rural economies and the farming community on this week's podcast. Scotland's farmers and crofters are having to deal with the impacts of labour shortages, barriers to trade and supply chain issues resulting from Brexit. To make matters worse, they know much more pain is just around the corner as the tories continue to cobble together concerning trade deals – not to mention the Internal Market Bill, which threatens Scotland's high-quality producers. Both Fergus and Emma's passion for the sector and deep understanding of the issues farmers and crofters face is evident throughout the conversation making it a must-listen! Both Emma and Fergus talk about the opportunities for the sector in an independent Scotland, along with changing attitudes within the farming community. The West Wing was enormously popular in the world and in our home growing up. Both Emma and Harry have watched it a few times...okay maybe more than a few times. The advent of streaming introduced this show to a whole new generation and for a significant part of the population it has been a cathartic response to recent political events. Both those factors have triggered multiple West Wing watch-along podcasts. This week Emma and Harry watched Season 1 Episode 15 of the West Wing, titled Celestial Navigation, and then listened to 3 podcasts all breaking down that episode.Podcasts listened to this week:The West Wing WeeklyThe West Wing ThingWinging It: The West Wing Podcast

This week you're stuck with just us! We explore the concept of matrescence, what this means to us and what our experience was of becoming mothers. Matrescence, similar to adolescence, describes a period of great change when a woman becomes a mother. These changes include physical, emotional, hormonal and psychological shifts which most women experience after having a baby. Both Emma and Hannah share how they felt in those early days of motherhood, and discuss the different challenges, pressures and expectations put on mothers during such a vulnerable time. This is an honest and open chat (with lots of lols of course!) which we hope will be relatable to all parents listening. This podcast is for parents, soon to be parents, wanting to be parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cats, dogs and anyone else who cares to listen. Many of you will be familiar with The Wiggles, whether it's from your childhood, your kids or your grandkids, and this week we got to chat with Emma Watkins aka Emma Wiggle and her mum Kathryn. She joined the lineup many years ago as the Yellow Wiggle! We hear all about Emma's childhood, the families love of animals, their connection to the matriarch of the family, Kathryn's mother and more! Emma truly is as calming in person (virtually) as she is on the screen or stage. There is no wonder children across the globe love her and want to be her! Kathryn, the always positive mother, supported Emma's dreams to be on the stage and screen. Turning rejection into a laughing and teachable moment, which helped Emma pick herself up and try again. Even though Emma missed out on her dream to be in the theatre production of Cats, she landed on her feet and became the first female Wiggle, paving the way for the Wiggles to now grow their family even further! Both Emma & Kathryn were extremely open about Emma's diagnosis and surgery due to endometriosis! She was back in the Wiggles studio after 6 weeks - with Kathryn bringing her soup and sitting by her bedside, along with her sister. Despite the geographical distance between them, they connect, do the quiz from the paper via zoom, and exchange dog and horse photos. It was an absolute pleasure to speak with Emma & Kathryn - we're now BFFs with Kathryn - and will have them back on with Emma's sister very soon! If you have a Mother/Daughter relationship you would like to share, please reach out via Instagram or on the website! We'd love to hear from you. In this episode we’re speaking about pelvic health in women and returning to exercise after pregnancy and birth. For this interview, we’ve recruited two of the very best in this area; Advanced Physiotherapist in pelvic health Gráinne Donnelly and Specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist Emma Brockwell. The pair together with Tom Goom wrote the highly cited return to running postpartum guidelines entitled: ‘Returning to running postnatal – guidelines for medical, health and fitness professionals’.Pelvic health issues affect many women at different stages of life including the 80% of women in the U.K. who will have a baby. Pregnancy and child birth can cause a number of pelvic health issues, such as incontinence of urine, pelvic organ prolapse and diastasis recti (abdominal separation) which we cover in this episode. We also talk about the importance of the pelvic floor muscle and why all women can benefit from doing exercises to strengthen this muscle whether they've had a baby or not! Both Emma and Gráinne are passionate about helping women overcome pelvic health issues, and raising awareness about such conditions which are common but not normal. They highlight that the vast majority of these issues can be treated effectively with physiotherapy, something that they find not a lot of women are aware of.They're also on a mission to improve the quality and consistency of information available to guide women back to normal life after having a baby. We talk about if you can’t see it, you can’t be it, when it comes to elite athletes returning to competition after pregnancy and stress the importance of physical activity for pregnant women. We also talk about why women need adequate time to repair, heal and recover after giving birth and before returning to any form of exercise. In 'Question Time' this week we answer a question around why some women may feel more anxious and overwhelmed (especially given the way of the world at the moment) in phase 4 of their cycle- the premenstrual window- and what people can do about it.Resources:Free access to returning to running postnatal guidelines: https://mailchi.mp/38feb9423b2d/returning-to-running-postnatal-guidelineDiastasis Rectus Abdominis Patient Handbook: https://absolutephysio.dpdcart.com/product/199837 https://www.pelvicroar.org/ and https://www.pelvicroar.org/rectus-diastasisSqueezy App: https://www.squeezyapp.com/ which has a link to the "find a physio" directory toohttps://www.activepregnancyfoundation.org/ https://www.umi-health.com/Grainne on Insta and FB @absolute.physio on Twitter: @ABSPhysio Grainne's website - www.absolute.physioEmma's webite - https://physiomum.co.uk/Emma on Instagram and FB: @physiomumuk and Twitter @emma_physiomum If you like what we do and you'd like to support our cause please consider becoming a Patron of the Female Athlete Podcast. Want to thank the sponsors, all of whom have been unbelievable. They've really kept this show on the road, and while I've been so blessed to have received so many messages from the community, these folks all deserve a huge amount of credit. I won't go into depth here because of the email I will send after, but I want to thank Pitch, ContentCal, Fiverr, Redgate, Cambridge Marketing College, Leadoo, Brand, Further, Third Light, Bravo and Human. One ask: thank the people who help us.

Both Emma and Troy have overcome extreme shyness as children and recognize that shyness was a major hurdle to achieving the contentment that comes with the MoNA Life. Most importantly, the two emphasize that they are not perfect, they are in fact still human. Episode 076 with Emma Kupu Mitchell and Christine Pensa, On Being Inspired, Ignited, and More Aligned On being inspired, ignited, and more aligned in our sacred self care. How our work has shifted as we have become more of who we are—in part—because of this joyful work we do together on the podcast. In a kind of Freaky Friday, Emma and Christine take turns being interviewed by each other to talk about the passion they both feel for the new ways they are showing up in the world, particularly through their sacred work and offerings. First up is Emma being interviewed by Christine. Emma is a Soul Essence Alignment Artist and has been a practitioner of holistic therapies for over 30 years, including clinical Aromatherapy, Ayurveda, Depth Numerology, Elemental Astrology, Yoga Nidra, and Sound Healing. Emma uses her extensive knowledge of ancient healing practices to create unique sound-infused sacred anointing oils and tinctures. She is one of the co-hosts of the Awakened Woman self care podcast. Emma shares why the soul is an integral part of her work because she is fascinated by the depths of who we are and what we are here to evolve into, and that’s why the soul essence is key to her work. She explains how her new Soul Essence Alignment Mandala (SEAM) work is the culmination of over 30 years experience, in alignment with the new energies moving through her. She shares how the Soul Essence Alignment is weaving in more of the Elemental Astrology, or Cosmic energies, into her Sound, Plant and Stone medicine work. She says this work feeds her own sacred self care because every person she comes into contact with is a mirror for her own journey, and she honours the sacredness of this work as a gift. Emma maintains, "My work is my play." Next up is Christine being interviewed by Emma. Christine Pensa is the face behind Art That Moves, where Ceremony is practiced as ART. Journeying with Christine is an invitation to make sacred your art of living through co-created daily ritual, bespoke ceremony, and creative practice—where she holds space for the masterpiece of you to thrive. In addition to being a visual artist, Christine is a trained Shamanic Practitioner, and Creative Way Shower who combines ancient practice with the sovereign creative voice that wants to be expressed through you. Christine is also the co-creator, and illustrator of the Soul Discovery Coloring Book published by Conari Press, as well as the co-host of the weekly podcast, Awakened Woman Self Care. Christine shares her journey from art making and teaching children and adults art and soul. She says it was time to leave behind her art production, even though she loved it, to do something she loves more—weaving her shamanic training with her joy of creating, particularly ceremony, which her guides invited her to embrace as a kind of "ceremony party planner." She shares that though many people think they don't have time to create sacred ceremony in their day, they can make simple moments sacred seamlessly and easily. She maintains the art of living with sacred intention means life is always filled with joy. Both Emma and Christine agree that Wednesdays are their favourite day and how meeting and interviewing the 75 women they have featured on the podcast has fed their sacred self care. Both are grateful for the wise women guests, and for the beautiful listeners who tune in every week. Both are grateful that this podcast seed they planted has grown into a beautiful flower—now that's sacred self care! Last August, we witnessed the most electrifying track race in history at the World Championships: the women's 3,000m Steeplechase. Before this race, no American woman had ever won a medal in the steeple at the World Championships. Emma Coburn and Courtney Frerichs changed that with an historic 1-2 finish, decimating a field that included the current World Record holder and Olympic Champion. This was also the first time any Americans had taken home both gold and silver at the World Champions or the Olympics in a race longer than 400m since the 1912 Olympics. Both Emma and Courtney also ran faster than the existing American Record. NBC Sports called the race "shocking." Sports Illustrated described Courtney's effort "certainly one of the biggest surprises of the world championships." And ESPN boldly proclaimed that this was one of the best races in the history of running. I'll paraphrase ESPN: Before this race, Courtney' fastest steeplechase time was 9:19. She beat that time by an enormous 15 seconds to win silver in 9:03.77. That's like scoring a hat trick in a World Cup soccer game after totaling only three goals all season. No American had won a world title in steeplechase since 1952. No U.S. women had ever finished 1-2 in any world championship distance race. Track nerds -- why isn't there such a thing as a football nerd? -- are calling this the most thrilling race of the 2017 World Championships, and one of the greatest moments in American distance running history. You sports fans can just call it amazing. Like a football game where -- nah, forget that. After a race like this, nobody cares about football. A 15-second improvement? Over a race that's less than two miles long? INSANITY! That kind of PR puts Courtney in the record books. She's now the 8th fastest woman to ever run the steeplechase. Today you're going to hear directly from Courtney about this historic race.
