Episode 89: Camera Cleaning, Maintenance, and Repairs

Camerosity

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2025 112:23

A topic that we've lightly touched upon in previous episode, but never dared devote an entire episode to is the taboo subject of repairing your own cameras.  There are those who firmly believe all repairs should be left to the capable hands of professionals, but there are others who have no problem with opening their own cameras and trying it out themselves. If you're in the latter group and are interested to hear some tips and tricks from those of us who have been brave/foolish enough to try it, Episode 89 is all about repairing your own cameras.  Joining Paul, Stephen, Theo, and Mike are returning callers A.J. Gentile, Alyssa Micha, Andrew Reynolds, Christopher Wells, John Michael Mendizza, Keir Frei, Larry Effler, Pat Casey, Rafael Espinoza, Ray Nason, Wayne Scheipers, and Will Pinkham who all share their own experiences. We cover a wide range of topics, starting with what you can and cannot repair on a Kodak Medalist and whether you can still send your Leicas to the factory in Wetzlar to get repaired.  Hear who we think makes a good set of JIS screwdrivers, lens spanners, and Mike recommends a rubber grippy tool.  We share our recommendations for cleaning cameras, getting sticky residue off film doors, replacing mirror bumpers and foam light seals, how not to clean a reflex mirror, what works on lenses and what not to use.  We even cover the taboo topic of washing your camera in the dishwasher! Although there is very little GAS in this episode, we do get into a few model specific camera repairs.  Alyssa Micha shares with us her beautiful 1903 Kodak camera which had moldy bellows and what she needed to do to replace them.  We talk about how to and how not to fix the infamous Canon Squeal of the Canon AE-1 and A-1 cameras, along with how to deal with the sticky backs of the Nikon N80 and N90, Mike talks about a product he used to mold a custom hand grip for his Minolta 650si. We talk about various cleaners, when and when not to use lighter fluid, acetone, glass cleaner, and for the love of God, please never use WD-40 on any camera!  Although this whole episode is about home repairs and cleaning, we end the show talking about how best to take care of your camera to minimize its chances of never needing to be repaired, how to deal with humidity, and whether or not to store your cameras in their original leather cases. Meet Anthony, Paul, and Mike: If you are in the vicinity of Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, March 22nd, come to the Ohio Camera Swap at the Hilton Garden Inn Cincinnati/West Chester and say hi to us.  Who knows, maybe even some other Camerosity Podcast regulars will show up as well.  While you're there, maybe you can buy something from us! As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. Our next episode will be number 90, and like we've done for episodes 70 and 80, we will be devoting the show to cameras of that decade.  For Episode 90, we will discuss cameras of the 1990s (or 1890s for that matter)!  Finally, Theo will get a chance to talk about his beloved Mamiya 7, but in addition to that there were many other terrific cameras from that decade like the Nikon N90s and the premium 28Ti and 35Ti point and shoots, the Contax AX, and the Olympus µ[mju:]-II.  In addition to terrific film cameras, the 1990s was the first decade with a large number of digital cameras like the Minolta RD-175 and Nikon D1.  We will record Episode 90 on Monday, March 24th at 7pm Central Daylight Time and 8pm Eastern Daylight Time. (Note that Daylight Savings Time started in North America on Sunday, March 9th, so be sure to check your local time if you plan on joining the show!) The result of shooting outside the box has given Robert the platform to shoot even the biggest “American Games” in a slightly skewed manner with a very fresh eye. 1977 UCI history alumnus has been one of the nation's premier sports photographers, a career he fell into almost accidentally while working as a middle school teacher and football coach. Robert borrowed his dad's Canon AE-1 Program camera and started shooting high school sports, selling the prints to parents and students. Beck has shot 10 Super Bowls; a half-dozen Olympics; and countless games, matches and athletic achievements, such as Wayne Gretzky's record-breaking 802nd hockey goal. He has also developed a reputation for compelling portraits. Using such props as Fruity Pebbles cereal, underwater furniture, Navy jets and a herd of sheep, he has coaxed intriguing poses out of everyone from skateboarder Tony Hawk and pitcher Madison Bumgarner to hurdler Lolo Jones and Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt.www.robertbeckphotography.com https://www.instagram.com/shoot802/

Is it a coincidence or did we plan it all along?  Episode 70 of the Camerosity Podcast is all about the 70s!  In this episode, the gang does our best to fit the best, the worst, and other noteworthy camera and photographic advancements of an entire decade into a 104 minute podcast! Joining Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike on this episode are returning callers Daniel Belmes, Jordan Berube, Patrick Casey, Tim Peters, and first time callers Gheerwijn Clicque and Will Pinkham. We start off this episode dedicated to the 1970s, discussing a camera from...the 1960s!  As we often do, the show gets off topic quickly and we end up discussing the merits of the Canon Pellix and pellicle mirrors, but we get back on track with other Canon SLRs like the Canon AE-1 and A-1. We discuss the beginning of the auto focus era, and cover the first ever auto focus SLR.  In addition, the topic of everyone's favorite 1970s film, Pocket Instamatic Type 110 is discussed, why it was invented, notable cameras that used it, and some tips and tricks to home developing and scanning your own 110 film. We declare the two companies who we think were the most and least innovative camera makers of the 1970s.  Can you guess who they are?  I'll give you a hint, one of them rhymes with "Schmoloroid"! Realizing that we made it more than halfway through the show without discussing too many cameras, we did a lightning round asking everyone to share their favorite, least favorite, and at least one noteworthy camera from the 1970s.  Be sure to listen to the show and see if your 1970s camera was mentioned. For the next episode, we are taking a break from our regular two week recording cadence as both Paul and Theo have some vacations coming up.  We will definitely return soon for Episode 71, but as of right now, we do not have a date or a topic set.  As mentioned in this episode, we teased an upcoming Zeiss-Ikon episode, but so far, that's still to be determined... The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We've Made a Big Update to Our Billingham Bag Reviews

The Phoblographer

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2022 3:58

Every now and again, we make mistakes. And with some of the reviews we've done on Billingham camera bags, we got the materials wrong. The Phoblographer, for 12 years, has really done the most extensive review coverage of the camera bag world. Indeed, lots of folks tell us we honestly have the best. So, we take these very seriously. We invite you to take a look below and see what updates we've made. Some photographers, quite transparently, wouldn't bat an eye at this update, but we take this seriously. And I'm penning a specific news post on it because it happened across a category of camera bags. This all started when we published our Billingham Hadley Large Pro review. We mistakenly said that the materials were canvas. Reviewer Brittany Smith and I both agreed that it was made from similar materials as the Hadley Pro 2020. To that end, we concluded that it was canvas as we have reviewed a lot of camera bags. Indeed, if you didn't know any better, it's likely you would also say they're made from canvas and leather. But, we were wrong about this and a few other products. Our Billingham rep got in touch with us to offer a correction. Truth be told, even they admitted it's confusing. To the touch, Billingham bags feel like canvas and leather. They even look like it. But not all of them are canvas. It reminds me almost of what Canon did years ago with the Canon AE-1. Lots of folks think that camera is made of metal, but it's actually plastic that's designed to look and feel like metal. Here's what our rep said: Our Sage is always FibreNyte. Navy, Grey and Burgundy is always Canvas. Black and Khaki can either be Canvas or FibreNyte. Sorry I know it's confusing! Looking at the bags that you have reviewed for us: Mini Eventer – Black FibreNyteHadley One – Navy CanvasHadley Small Pro – Grey CanvasHadley Pro 2020 – Sage FibreNyteAVEA End Pockets – Khaki Canvas35 Rucksack – Black CanvasF1.4 – Black FibreNyte And there you have it! You're probably wondering why we didn't just check the materials to begin with when doing our reviews? Well, it's because, for years, we were just that sure of it. Others might've checked because they're so new and don't have the vast database of camera bag reviews we have. Literally, we have over 172 camera bag reviews. To put this into more perspective, I'd like you to think about the differences and similarities in the following situations; Beef vs buffalo vs yak meat: If you didn't know any better, you could easily say Buffalo is probably grass fed beef. To that end, you could say Yak is a buttery form of beef. But if you weren't told the difference, you'd probably blame it all on the seasonings and way it was cooked. Meanwhile, the stark difference between beef and lamb shoulder is synonamous with canvas and nylon. Single Malt Whiskey vs Indian Dessert Whiskey vs Bourbon: Some single malt whiskeys taste like a bourbon. Some Indian whiskies taste like a bourbon as well. And if you had to do a blind taste test, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Let's not even get into wine. I'm not sure how many people would be able to tell the difference between a Cabernet and a Malbec just by taste. Kitten fur vs rabbit fur: In most blind situations, I doubt most folks would be able to tell the difference between well groomed kitten fur vs rabbit fur. It isn't as stark a difference as say cashmere vs wool. For the record as well, this really only applies to three reviews we've done. Billingham has some canvas bags for sure. But the two are incredibly difficult to tell apart.

Gioacchino lebt in Frankfurt. Tell us something about yourself -Born 1971 in Frankfurt on the Main i travelled Europe for many years and worked as a Chef. I love art and and life. How and when did you get into photography? -I got to know Photography in School at extra classes. Back then it was very practical lessons. Processing Film and about Camera construction and function. the moment you develop your film and see the result slowly appear on Paper - I still process analog films and still have my Canon AE-1 from then. What does photography mean to you? -It´s a lot of things to me. The intimate passion Model and Photographer share is electrifying to me. Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers. -i do many many things basically against all rules of classic photography and do not follow rational rules. Most of my best Shots happen by instinct. Where do you get inspiration from? -I observe a lot. I am constantly looking for something in faces i see everyday. Also Nature and ordinary interactions between people, in Cafes, Bars, Supermarkets… Think you in advance what you want in the picture? -I have a vague idea before i meet a model but like mentioned above i follow my instinct. This is a key aspect of my photography because i want to be flexible and open for an occurring opportunity. Studio, on location or both? -on Location. Working in studios is something i just don't have strong feelings for. Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional? -i am a paid hobbyist What has been your most memorable session and why? -i am so lucky i can say there were far more than just one very memorable session. But one of my most special sessions was with my ex Girlfriend. We haven´t met since years. This was one of the most intimate connections i have experienced when shooting. What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business? -Be organized, continously develop your skills and find your own style. Don't hesitate to make clear your work is worth getting paid. What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work? -It´s simply the person i shoot. Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens? -Sony What do you think of our new magazine? -It´s fresh and arty and rich in variety. In this episode of the Second Success Podcast, Dr Rakish Rana talks with mutli-award winning photographer, Sanjay Jogia of Eye Jogia Photography. Sanjay is an Internationally acclaimed, award-winning photographer who has been featured as One of the World's 6 Best Wedding Photographers by the global Professional Photographer Magazine. He is the only Wedding Ambassador by Canon UK representing the EMEA region, as well as being a global Brand Ambassador for X-Rite, Fundy Software, Tether Tools, Loupedeck, Canson Infinity, Eizo, Spiffy Gear, and Dreambooks Pro. Together, Sanjay and his wife Roshni established ‘Eye Jogia Photography', a successful Luxury Destination Wedding Photography Studio based in Harrow on the Hill - but Sanjay's self-taught love of photography started at school by developing his own style and approach from a young age with his father's film Canon AE-1 camera. Known for his unconventional creativity in a timeless style, Sanjay travels the world as a Photographer, Educator, Mentor, Judge, Brand and Industry Ambassador. His wedding images are a blend of ‘Reality' and ‘Fantasy' - a fashion and movie inspired approach using beauty lighting and posing techniques which are balanced with a sensitive, observant and almost portrait-like documentary approach for the majority of wedding images giving his wedding couples the best of both worlds. Ultimately, he wants to tell the amazing story of all Eye Jogia couples in a way they will cherish with pride. Sanjay has won over 80 of Print Competition Awards but now is privileged to be invited regularly as a Judge for WPPI in Las Vegas, for SWPP in London, SM Fotografi in Sweden, and for the British Photography Awards as an Associate amongst various online European competitions. Sanjay has also proudly represented Team GB in the World Photographic Cup for the past two years with 2 of his images as ‘finalist'. Last but not least, Sanjay actively represents the British Wedding and Events Industry with his ongoing participation in the UK Government Taskforce for Weddings in two of the 6 Working Groups to gain government support both financially and operationally to reignite the industry in the wake of the Global Pandemic following a year of industry wide neglect. Today, with a short podcast, Sunil Sharpe, Rachael Bailey and Marcus O'Laoire inform us on 'Give Us The Night'.  As stated on their website (giveusthenight.com) Give Us The Night is 'an independent volunteer group of professionals operating within a night-time industry, campaigning for positive changes to nightlife in Ireland, with particular regard to music venues'. Explaining where the current issues lie in the night time economy and why this movement is so critical are three guests doing stunning work within the in the music industry: - Sunil Sharpe is one of Ireland's most celebrated DJ's and tirelessly campaigns for this cause, educating and enlightening on why archaic licensing laws among other issues are causing venue closures discouraging a fostering of a night time industry that reflects the 'wide range of lifestyles and working hours' in Ireland.  -Rachael Bailey creates sponsored content centred around underground music, club culture and festivals.  -Marcus O'Laoire (DJ) has held residencies in Tramline, The Academy and Opium as well as the recently closed Hanger and District 8. Listen for a digestible understanding of what this movement is and why you are hearing about it everywhere. To see what you can do or gain a deeper understanding of what these inspiring guests are talking about, I strongly urge you to head over to giveusthenight.com and read the incredible mandate this group of volunteers have drawn up and follow @giveusthenight on instagram. Audio by Pete Regazzoli. A huge thank you to my sponsor, Depop, for fascilitating me cover these really important discussions. The Depop shop I am loving this week is @loafcameras for fully refurbished 100 percent working second hand cameras from the throwback underwater film cameras to Canon AE-1's.
