Carlton Palmer is probably the most controversial man ever to be given the post of Mansfield Town FC manager. Arriving in November 2004 when Keith Curle was suspended, Palmer answered the call for help for long time old-friend Keith Haslam. THAT Relationship coupled with numerous comings and goings of fan favourites was the start of a difficult, sometimes toxic, relationship between Palmer and the fans. Eventually appointed after nearly FIVE MONTHS as Caretaker Manager, Palmer would go onto rebuild the squad for the following season, only to resign in dramatic fashion LIVE on Mansfield 103.2 Radio after a horrendous game at Rochdale. For the first time in detail – Carlton reveals why he walked away, shunting the blame onto one individual – a man he appointed! The interview reveals more from Carlton's perspective about his tenure as manager, including battles with mental health for his players, tough decisions and fan pressure. ….. A note from Craig; We understand that this will be the most controversial episode of the Mansfield Matters Podcast to date, but wish to stress that if a majority of you guys hadn't backed the idea when Carlton showed interest in coming on the show via Twitter, it wouldn't have been made. The content we create is ALWAYS for you, fellow supporters of Mansfield Town FC who've followed the journey because to them like us, Mansfield always matters. One hesitance we had about inviting Carlton on was that he'd come on and just defend long term friend Keith Haslam – we (Carlton and I) agreed that that wouldn't happen, it was the opportunity for Carlton to share his story and put a few ghosts to bed, in fairness to him – he keeps that promise. Genuinely we as a Podcast hope you enjoy the episode and leave you to make your own minds up, but reiterate one thing; think before you act (you know what we're talking about here). I, as the one who hosts/ edits etc, take full responsibility for the airing of this episode – Nathan (who IS featured on the show), along with Cam and Simon (who were unavailable for this one) should not be subject to any negative feedback or abuse as a result of this. It's a Podcast, it's a piece of content, nothing more – nothing less. Thanks, as ever, for your support. Craig

Winger Adam Rundle faced an uphill battle when he joined the Stags. In January 2005 he was brought in and lined up to replaced fans favourite Wayne Corden on the left hand side of the Mansfield midfield, but soon won supporters over with many a decent display. In his 18 month stint at the Stags, Rundle would become part of a vastly changing Mansfield Town, on and off the pitch, and became part of a dressing room which would see the Stags grace St James' Park, Newcastle in the FA Cup. Headlines were written on Rundle going back to his home town and, to be fair, he put in a class display – but many years on the now part time singer, reveals why the game on the big stage took its toll on his confidence, anxiety and self-belief. During his Stags Story, Rundle also reveals all about the struggle of living away from home at a young age in some questionable digs – plus reveals how he was the one to spark the resignation of controversial manager Carlton Palmer. The football: We discuss how the dynamics of a dressing room have changed over the years, and ask if there can there be a dominant force, or whether cliques are now more prevalent. Chinch walks us through some of those who might fall into either of those categories, while talking altogether more than we expected about Carlton Palmer. The food: Still in lockdown, the food we're eating isn't particularly noteworthy, apart from Chinch's further reliance on hot dogs, which he now reveals he's eating once a day. Well, we're motoring through these embarrassingly quickly aren't we? In this special Christmas edition of the podcast*, we look at TTP issue 6 - the special Christmas issue of the fanzine. It was also the first issue for which Dave was the sole editor, so any solicitor's letters from this point on were solely a matter for him (there weren't any, thankfully, with the possible exception of a threatened but - we suspect - non-existent one, regarding a former player's false teeth. Yes. So give it a listen and find out why Phil was amazed when he saw Carlton Palmer unveiled as County manager - to be fair, we all were, but Phil had a good reason to be more amazed than most. YOu can also find out how exactly how Dave Jones got into coaching at County - and which former Everton teammate was lined up for the job before he was gazumped. And Eurb reminds us of the most important ever game in the relegation-haunted 80s. Bet it's not the one you think. *It's got bells on

It's Halloween so the team appropriately reflect on recent defensive horrors from Rachubka and O'Dea, and recall various grim memories from the past - think Carlton Palmer. With El-Hadji Diouf putting pen to paper at ER, the team fondly remembers other loveable characters, such as Carlton Palmer, Jody Morris and Mark Aizlewood.
