As Chelsea started to establish themselves at the top end of English football with a flurry of major honours in the late 1990s, change was awaiting them on the horizon. The Blues had not long fielded the Premier League's first starting XI that featured overseas players only. It was symbolic of English football's transition to becoming more cosmopolitan, but the appointment of Claudio Ranieri in September 2000 saw the Italian take things back to their roots... he wanted to build his Chelsea team around a spine of homegrown talent. Step forward from the Chelsea youth ranks John Terry, a player whose career was at a crossroads. Within one match, Ranieri identified the talent that would lead Chelsea all the way to becoming European champions. And alongside him, another youngster from across London, Frank Lampard. Chelsea's journey on the road to Munich 2012 was just starting. This episode takes you behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge to understand how Ranieri and Colin Hutchinson lay the foundations for Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho to build a dynasty. It's a story played out before the threat of financial ruin and one game that changed it all against Liverpool in May 2003. In this episode you will hear from: John Terry, Ken Bates, Claudio Ranieri, Colin Hutchinson, Ruud Gullit, Glenn Hoddle, Frank Leboeuf, David Lee, Tore Andre Flo, Jody Morris, Jesper Gronkjaer, Neil Barnett (Spy), Rick Glanvill (Chelsea FC historian) and Alex Leith (Ranieri's translator). The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football

As Chelsea faced Barcelona in the 2004/05 Champions League, the club was about to navigate unchartered waters. Jose Mourinho and his men were disrupting the European game and the continent's elite didn't like it one bit. Come the end of the Blues' Last-16 clash, UEFA labelled them as the "Enemies of Football", referee Anders Frisk retired from the game on account of death threats and a modern rivalry between Chelsea and the Catalan giants was born. Mourinho and his new club had arrived on the biggest stage. The Roman Abramovich era at Stamford Bridge had suddenly gone international. Things would never be the same again. This is the inside story of how it all happened. In this episode you will hear from: Steve Clarke, Frank Lampard, Tore Andre Flo, Frank Leboeuf, Jody Morris, Colin Hutchinson, Simon Johnson (The Athletic), Peter Drury (Commentator), David "Stamford Chidge" Chidgey (Chelsea Fancast), Rick Glanvill (Chelsea FC Historian) and Martin Tyler (Commentator). Cheek for Kovacic and Chalobah for Fofana - understandable but Chukwuemeka for Felix? In part two we look at the poor defending by Koulibaly and Kepa's errors for Everton's 2nd goal. The result was frustrating and felt like a defeat and it seems like when Chelsea don't win the negativity starts. Stamford Chidge, Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan look back at the 2001-2002 season in our '50 Years of Chelsea' series.Claudio Ranieri's first summer transfer window brought four key signings with Bolo Zenden and Emanuel Petit arriving from Barcelona, William Gallas from Marseille and Frank Lampard, the talented young midfielder, from West Ham for £11 million. The new signings took time to settle in and with the departures of Denis Wise, Gus Poyet and Frank Leboeuf, there was an air of transition about the club. Although Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen were forming a deadly partnership up front, Chelsea were drawing too many games, evidenced by their position outside the top four in the Premier League.Off the pitch, controversy reigned with John Terry, Frank Lampard, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jody Morris getting caught by the News of the World drunkenly abusing American tourists in shock at the awful events of 9/11. The media also had a field day when Desailly, Le Saux, Petit, Gudjohnsen, Gallas and Ferrer elected not to play in the UEFA Cup natch against Hapeol Tel Aviv due to security concerns. Chelsea were knocked out by the Israeli side but supporters were bouyed by performances in the Worthington Cup where Coventry, Leeds and Newcastle were despatched to set up a semi-final against Spurs in the New Year.December saw some of the best performances of the season with a 3-0 away win at Man Utd, a 4-0 demolition of Liverpool at home and a 2-1 win away to top of the table Newcastle. Another new podcast special? With the news this morning of Chelsea sacking Frank Lampard, we thought it was the perfect time to launch the Managerial Minds podcast, taking a closer look at three managers in the news this week for various reasons. We start with Frank Lampard, looking at why his time as Chelsea manager has come to such an abrupt end, whether it was the right decision, and what he did wrong in terms of tactics and man management along the way. We also take a closer look at his apparent successor at Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel, and whether the notoriously difficult tactician is the man to fix Chelsea's problems; will he clash with the board and the dressing room, can he balance the midfield, is this the lifeline Werner and Havertz need, and what does this mean for Mason Mount? And we finish with Rafa Benitez who is back on the market after leaving Dalian Professional. We cover the inevitable (but unlikely) links to a Newcastle United return, before discussing whether the much discussed Celtic move would be a good fit for him; and not just because we'd love to see a Gerrard vs Benitez Old Firm Derby. Plus, the inevitable detours on Jose Mourinho, Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, John Terry, Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino, Emma Hayes, Jody Morris, and managers who look like incels. **Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts, as it makes it easier for other potential listeners to find us. To put it bluntly, things are a bit of a mess at Stamford Bridge right now, and so we decided, with Frank Lampard's appointment as manager now a given, to look at the five biggest challenges facing him this summer, and how to fix them. Jack Collins (@jjwc), Sam Tighe (@brsamtighe) and Dean Jones (@deanjonesbr) were joined by Clayton Beerman of the Chelsea FanCast to shed some light on Lampard, Jody Morris, the loans, the transfer ban, and how to try and replace the gaping hole left by the departing Eden Hazard. (15.41) There's also an exclusive interview with Cleveland Cavaliers power-forward Larry Nance Jr., star in the NBA and massive Chelsea fan to boot, talking how he grew up as a football fan, what position he'd like to play and ranking his three favourite players that have played in the blue shirt. (35.46) In this week's Hot Takes, we take a look at how Manchester United's signings so far have been somewhat underwhelming (02.30), why Dani Olmo's performance at the U21 European Championships should have him on the radar of some of Europe's top clubs (07.38) and examine Roma's transfer window-taking a deep dive on the Giallorossi's new manager, players and style, and thinking about what they should do next (10.48). Roulette finds the squad picking footballing partners for high-level murder investigations (44.46) and discussing the best bits of supporting their respective football clubs (46.07); before Sam rounds things off by ranking the best vegan foods and comparing them, to come full circle, to current Chelsea players (49.20). Oh, and the gang announce their upcoming US Tour. To get involved, follow @brfootball on Twitter and Instagram, and use the hashtag #BRFootballRanks!

Stamford Chidge and Jonathan Kydd join Johnny Burrow to discuss the latest on Chelsea's Transfer Ban; Eden Hazard's departure for Real Madrid and who should replace Maurizio Sarri if the Italian really is off to join Serie A giants Juventus. With the news breaking that Chelsea has appealed their FIFA transfer ban with CAS, we have Football.London's Chelsea correspondent, Oliver Harbord, on the line to explain what it all means. With Maurizio Sarri rumoured to be leaving Chelsea for Juventus, what's holding things up? Will he still go and is haggling with Juventus for £5 million compensation merely repeating last summer’s mistake of disrupting the preparations for next season? Would a quick exit and a quick hire be better for Chelsea?Support the Chelsea FanCast and become a Patron:Become a Patron! If he does leave, who will replace Sarri and will it depend on the situation with the transfer ban? Allegri is rumoured to be interested and would signal a return to pragmatic winning at all costs football, but would Frank Lampard and Jody Morris be a more shrewd appointment if Chelsea had to resort to blooding the youth? With the news that the deal for Eden Hazard to leave Chelsea has been done with Real Madrid, has Marina Granovskaia played a blinder in getting £88 million which could rise to £130 million with add ons? And have Chelsea managed to persuade Callum Hudson-Odoi to commit to Chelsea on a 5-year deal, worth £100k per week? Finally, we discuss the extraordinary comments in the press from Alvaro Morata which seem to confirm most Chelsea supporter's opinion that he's just not cut out to be a Chelsea striker.Chelsea FanCast is broadcast on Love Sport Radio every Friday from 7.00-9.00 pm. Chelsea FanCast on Love Sport Radio - the only 100% Chelsea show on the radio! Stamford Chidge and Clayton Beerman join Johnny Burrow to look back at Chelsea's week, including a trip to Boston to support Roman Abramovich's 'Final Whistle on Hate'. Chelsea played a match in America against New England Revolution last week in support of Roman Abramovich's campaign against anti-semitism, but with a European Final a matter of week's away should the team have been playing this match at all? It seems that Sarri thought as much given his public absences but was he sending the club a message? The foolishness of the match was put in to sharp focus with a season ending injury to Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but what does this say about Chelsea's current injury crisis with injuries to Ruben, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Rudiger, Kante and Ampadu? Is it just bad luck or is there a pattern emerging that may have something to do with Sarri's training regimen and lack of squad rotation. With the transfer window officially opening this week, we enter the annual period of rumour and madness. With Hazard looking very likely to leave and Luiz signing a contract extension, what are the other likely in and outs for Chelsea and will it all depend on whether the Transfer Ban is imposed. We say bollocks to UEFA for staging the Europa League final in Baku! It means an expensive and logistical nightmare for many fans wanting to go and many who follow the team loyally, home and away, at every match are unable to go. How can the clubs help? How many fans will make it to the match? How important is to win the Final? And finally, with conflicting rumours circulating about the future of Maurizio Sarri, should he be given credit for Chelsea finishing 3rd in the league and reaching a domestic and a European final? Has it actually been a successful first season for Sarri? Will his relationship with the fans & club count against him? Will Sarri go back to Italy and will Frank Lampard & Jody Morris replace him? Stamford Chidge is joined by Chelsea legend Kerry Dixon to look back to the wins against Derby County and Burnley and look ahead to this weekends match against Crystal PalaceThere was a great reception for Frank Lampard & Jody Morris as Chelsea took on Derby County in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday in a somewhat bonkers match – Derby played well and were unlucky not to win. Was this in part due to some dodgy Chelsea defending with the B team defence of Emerson, Cahill, Christensen and Zappacosta - are they not good enough or just rusty? On the plus side we had more minutes for Loftus Cheek and Willian continuing his recent good form. What did Kerry think of the performances of Mason Mount & Tomori? With Chelsea still unbeaten in all games and Bournemouth next in the quarter finals, can we smell another trophy? How important is it for Sarri? Was it performance of the season against Burnley or were Burnley just poor? Should we be considered serious title challengers?Did the win against Burnley prove that Chelsea can play well, score and win without Hazard? With Chelsea playing Crystal Palace on Sunday, we hope that Hazard will be fit. The rest of the team picks itself but will Barkley to start ahead of Kovacic? Finally Chidge and Kerry discuss the need to keep the unbeaten run going; keep pressure on at the top and show no complacency. Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs could all drop points this weekend and we have tougher games against Everton at home and spurs away next.Apologies, but there is a technical fault on the recording this week with an echo on Kerry's contribution. For our latest clip show, we head to the city I call home. I did write a book about the football team, but I swear that when the topic of FC Barcelona has arisen on The Big Interview, it has been at the urging of my guests and not myself. So we look back at what some of our guests had to say about this modern Barcelona team - one that has, at various points in its evolution, been called the Greatest Team in the World. Good title for a book, that. You're going to hear from Jody Morris and how he was meant to be marking Pep Guardiola but ended up with some kid called Xavi in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2000. Damien Duff then discusses what it was like to play against Frank Rijkaard's Barca in the same competition five years later. And Darren Fletcher also explains what it's like to not play against them, but to watch and wish that you were – in a Champions League final. David Moyes and Gordon Strachan will argue that it is Andres Iniesta - and not Lionel Messi - who is the jewel in the... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Johan Cruyff is the single most important man in the history of professional football; as a player, coach, director of football, thinker, philosopher, nobody come else comes close. His influence spans generations and is responsible for the era-defining football which I have been watching at the Camp Nou over the past decade. We have dedicated our latest clip show to the memory of this football icon, with David Moyes and Charlie Nicholas both featuring in a little section we call ‘the mystery of Cruyff's shirt'. That detective story is set in the 1982 European Cup and a tie between Celtic and Ajax, after which David and Charlie each think they have the great Cruyff's jersey. But who really got their hands on the prized shirt? And there is Jody Morris, who we spoke to on the day that Cruyff passed away. It was an emotional 24 hours, Jody giving an eloquent account of how the Dutchman had influenced his football philosophy. Enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

And there is Peter Beardsley's tale of how he ended up at Manchester United, which is one of the finest on any podcast I've done. Damien Duff, Gary McAllister and Alan Pardew also reveal the details behind the big transfer stories in their careers. Then there are the deals which didn't happen. Jody Morris' exit from Chelsea was a saga, while Darren Fletcher still regrets the collapse of a move to Spain and Michael O' Neill looks back at how an early Bosman switch to Sturm Graz hit the buffers. So many questions surround Jody Morris' career - and, as I found out during our captivating conversation, the man himself is not short of answers. What was life like under Hoddle, Vialli and Gullit at pre-Abramovich Chelsea? How does he feel about being named as the toughest opponent of Xavi's career? And how did he go from the offer of a five-year contract at Chelsea to, within five years, playing First Division football for St Johnstone? Morris has survived and thrived because he understands football and knows how to break it down. It is no surprise that he is now coaching the Chelsea Under-18s and is determined to establish himself in management. Don't be surprised to see him in the dugout at Stamford Bridge in the future.
