Michael Redfern (1943-2022) worked with our beloved Catflap favourites on many shows including Dangerous Brothers, The Young Ones, Bottom, and 4 of 6 episodes of Filthy Rich & Catflap. In this pod ep, author Mark Searby shares the audio of his chat with Mr Redfern, recorded while researching his book 'Rik Mayall: Comedy Genius'. Mark also chats with Jeffers about plenty of Rik stuff, the process of writing the book, and it all becomes suitably Catflappian! Follow Mark on X @Mark_Searby
In this ep Dona Di Stefano, the Assistant Floor Manager on Filthy Rich & Catflap, chats with Jeffers about the show to share nifty anecdotes, reveal production processes and patiently respond to his increasingly obscure questions. Dona enjoyed a 48-year career in TV and Theatre, becoming part of the Paul Jackson teams that worked on Happy Families, Catflap and Red Dwarf. In the 1990s she joined the BBC newsroom in Manchester working for many years on North West Tonight. Tune in to find out which items on the set of Catflap came from Dona's house, what props she kept, and was it her that made all the door-buzzer farty sounds? Plus there really is SO MUCH MORE. Enjoy!
Jon Auty from Behind the Stunts chats with Jeffers about Filthy Rich & Catflap's stunt pieces and stunt performers, including Nick Gillard, Denise Ryan, Peter Diamond, Gareth Milne, Paul Heasman and Spencer Collins. Here's Jon's LINKTREE to check out more Behind The Stunts! The cover image of Nigel Planer in rehearsal is thanks to Dona Di Stefano (Assistant Floor Manager for Catflap) who allowed us to use the photo. It's great! A chat with autograph collector John Heffernan who just completed the 'holy grail' of Filthy Rich & Catflap signature pieces. John tells the story of meeting Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer, Ben Elton and (almost) Ade Edmondson in a two-decade sig pursuit! Jeffers and John also chat about the lack of Catflap collectables and whether that could be a good thing.
A dive into Filthy Rich & Catflap, going letter by letter, where D is for Davro, G is for 'Game Show Formula' and B is for Benny Hill! This ep reveals a few cut scenes and does the dirty work of counting how many stiffy gags Catflap contains - plus much more. We answer questions like: Is the scene where Eddie attacks Richie with an axe a bit un-catflappian? What are Richie, Eddie and Filthy's best fourth-wall breaks? What state was Bulgy McBulgy's trouser furniture in during his act? Which top-flite muso played the Catflap theme melody? Follow us on X @PodCatflappo
Nigel Planer discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. Nigel Planer is an actor, writer and musician. He played Neil in the BBC comedy The Young Ones and Ralph Filthy in Filthy Rich & Catflap. He has appeared in many West End musicals, including original casts of Evita, Chicago, We Will Rock You, Wicked, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His play, It's Headed Straight Towards Us, is co-written with Adrian Edmondson, stars Samuel West and Rufus Hound, and is on at the Park Theatre, London. His latest book is Jeremiah Bourne in Time. Emulating the great Eddie Catflap is a feat few people are brave enough to try, but Zoe Read nailed it in June 2023. In this chat Zoe tells us how to get the Eddie look, and talks about cosplaying as Neil, Alan B'Stard, and Colin Grigson from Bad News! We also cover her 'Bastard Collection' of stuff relating to The Young Ones, The Comic Strip Presents, The New Statesman, Filthy Rich & Catflap and more! Tune in to hear the tale of David Read, a lucky lad who got to bunk off school to watch Rik and Ade rehearse Catflap in Manchester in 1986! David's story involves Terry Jones of Python fame, a very late train, and silent elevator ride with Nigel Planer. Thanks to @SquidyUK
President Fred of Argentina owes the South Balham Gas Board four pounds, nineteen shillings and sixpence and thus begins a thrilling tale of international intrigue, replete with revolutionaries, counter-revolutionaries, forged money, real money, red sacks, blue sacks and even coercion by liquorice allsorts! Joining Tyler to unpack this awfully knotty Goon Show from 1955 is Jeffers, the man behind the new podcast Podcasto Catflappo! Jeffers is doing God's work by scrutinising the unfairly overlooked Rik Mayall & Ade Edmondson one-series sitcom penned by Ben Elton: Filthy, Rich & Catflap - an important link in the chain between The Young Ones and Bottom. He's also co-host of Sitcom Showdown and waaaaay back in the day cut his teeth on The Goodies Podcast. He's also Australian but we won't hold that against him. It's fair to say that Jeffers saved Tyler's bacon on more than one occasion during the recording of this episode, having made copious notes and being properly organised. He was able to navigate through Milligan's peasouper of a plot whenever the hapless host got lost, however, thanks to judicious editing and money down to buy Jeffers' silence the listening audience will remain blissfully unaware of this fact. https://t.co/SMjiQkp5Gm
Ben Relton was part of the Catflap studio audience for the recording of episode 2 back in late 1986, and he joins Jeffers for a chat about his memories of that unforgettable evening! Ben and his sister got to witness Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson and Nigel Planer in all their glory, plus Hugh Laurie as N'Bend and Stephen Fry as P'farty. What a night! You can find Ben's band Kingsway Flyers on their Facebook page.
Ed Bye chats about his work on directing the film sequences for Filthy Rich & Catflap. He also talks about The Young Ones, plus his colleagues like visual effects guru Peter Wragg, set designer Mel Bibby and AFM Dona DiStefano, whom Ed also worked with while producing and directing Red Dwarf. There's mention of The Two Ronnies, Happy Families, Murder They Hope and more, plus we solve a few Catflap mysteries. Thanks Ed! Filthy Rich & Catflap was a 1987 sitcom written by Ben Elton, starring Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson and Nigel Planer. It was produced and directed by Paul Jackson.
Just who exactly is Eddie Catflap? In this special we investigate the evidence, crunch the numbers and find out! Jeffers is joined by Dave Robinson (of 60MW podcast) and other Catflap fans in paying tribute to Smelly Eddie, as played by Adrian Edmondson. To whiff him is to love him! The ep is in five segments: 00:06:10 Eddie Evidence 00:54:35 Fan Fave Eddie Moments 01:05:50 Eddie by the numbers (stats) 01:18:20 Eddie Quiz (with Garry Azzaro) 01:31:40 Pontification and Speculation Here's the social links to our guests! Find Dave at 60MW podcast's website: https://60minuteswith.co.uk/ Zoe Read on Twitter and on Instagram Toby Hadoke narrated Alan Lawson's comments on Eddie. You can find Toby's excellent Dr Who podcasts here: https://tobyhadoke.podbean.com/ Garry Azzaro's game boards are here: https://www.internationalridicule.co.uk/ Cheers Loobi!
An interview with Frank Jakeman who appeared in episode 4 of Filthy Rich & Catflap as one of the tough-guy leather boys from the gay pub. Frank shares memories of his day on the set of Catflap, plus plenty of film anecdotes (A View to A Kill, Brazil, Top Secret) and how he went from being a young Zookeeper at London Zoo to being an actor, including his role as a Vale Lord in the final Game of Thrones episode! Many thanks to Frank and Sharon! You can watch some of Frank's leading roles in indie films on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
Enormous Derek a.k.a. Tank James chats with Jeffers about Catflap episode 2, sledgehammers and chainsaws, Andre the Giant, his Sugar Frosties commercial and plenty more! He fondly recalls working with Nigel Planer, Rik Mayall, Ben Elton and Ade Edmondson in Filthy Rich & Catflap episode 2, and Tank has worked with many other famous UK comedy figures and actors. Tank's live gig dates on drums with Silverback are available at their Lemonrock page. Thanks to the folks at Ugly.org agency! Talk to us at Podcasto Catflappo on Twitter and Instagram.
A detailed peek into the pants of Episode 1 of Filthy Rich and Catflap, from January 1987, starring Ade Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Rik Mayall, written by Ben Elton. How many milkmen bit the dust? Which bits of script didn't make the broadcast? Where did the bodies get dumped in the canal? Jeffers will tell you all about it, so tuck in! With audio contributions from: Rebecca Vaughn @smashing_blouses Simon Wratten from the Official Unofficial Filthy Rich and Catflap Group You can read cool things at John Hoare's Dirty Feed Blog Thanks to Richard Herring for the clip, and to the Talking Bottom podcast for same! A bonus episode talking about Filthy Rich & Catflap's debut on Australian TV, how it fits into the Catflap timeline and what it was like experiencing it as a 13 year old kid. We dive into ABC's repeats of The Young Ones leading up to Catflap's first ep being broadcast on 30th April 1987 and how it was followed by The Comic Strip Presents. We also look at what our heroes Nigel Planer, Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall were up to in 1987!
After minor complications, Kelly is easing back into life at the Rose Gold Flat, but then Laura turns up with a claim that threatens to unsettle everyone again. Daniel's conscience begins to get the better of him as the school's decision about Max's future looms. Fallout from Asha's decision to skip the University Open Day in Glasgow forces her and Nina to assess the effect Nina's mental state may be having on their relationship. Mystery surrounding Amy's new boyfriend drives Tracy to distraction as her 18th birthday celebrations result in Steve sitting on an unexpected and uninvited guest. Sally's plans to spoil Tim's afternoon with his mum backfires as the movie of choice makes him reflect on the importance of blood relations and making up for lost time. Adam is on the receiving end of some strong-armed intimidation tactics, and is quick to assume that the loser of a boundary dispute is behind it all. Gail shoots hoops. Everyone ignores Kirk's cries for help. Carla just wants someone to do some work.
Deb reconnects with an old friend and Austin music mainstay, and semi-finalist from Season 1 of “The Voice”, Nakia. They get into Nakia's fantastic new musical score on the award-winning, fat-positive series “Skeleton Key”, and how rude people suck. Enjoy! The spiritual middle child between The Young Ones and Bottom, Filthy Rich & Catflap managed one lonely series in 1987. With Ben Elton writing and the funny three from The Young ones all involved, what could possibly go wrong? Gareth steps up to the mic to give his analysis of the show and his controversial opinions of Rik Mayall.
What - and I'll repeat that - what a guest we have this week! "No, don't laugh." Well, actually do, because this gent was a lynchpin in the alternative comedy and scene and has appeared in more of our favourite comedies than he's served Pernods in The Lamb and Flag. He's been in (amongst LOADS of other stuff) Filthy, Rich and Catflap, Toast of London, The Comic Strip Presents (as Arch Crippledick), French and Saunders, three series of Blackadder, two episodes of The Young Ones and was Paranoia in Red Dwarf. It's Lee Cornes! Lee tells us about how he got into comedy and his days at the very beginning of the Comedy Store, being described as "the Comedian's Comedian" by Sean Lock, getting stark bollock naked on stage, seeing Rik and Ade for the first time, being the warm act at the recordings of The Young Ones, studio stunts, teaching (for real and in Grange Hill), Blackadder and of course playing Hammersmith's best pub landlord, the legendary Dick Head. Talking Bottom is thrilled to be joined by legend of British comedy, Paul Jackson. He brought alternative comedy to the masses and was the man who got The Young Ones on TV (which he also directed), changing the face of sitcoms forever. Amongst working on a plethora of great shows he also gave us Filthy, Rich and Catflap, Red Dwarf and the pilot episode of Bottom. In part 1, Paul chats about his entry into TV and his early years rising to become a producer, his comedy influences, working with the Two Ronnies and on Steptoe and Son, meeting Rik and Ade, Boom Boom Out Go The Lights, writing, comic duos, throwing himself into puddles, bringing The Young Ones to TV and a treasure trove of stories about it. The inteview continues in part 2. The book "Talking Bottom: A guide to the cult sitcom" can be found to order at: https://unbound.com/books/bottom/
Talking Bottom's interview with TV titan Paul Jackson continues as he discusses making Filthy, Rich and Catflap, seeing Rik and Ade in Waiting for Godot, slapstick, working with writers, special effects in sitcoms, producing TV in the US and Australia, working with Ant and Dec, chairing Comic Relief, the American remake of The Young Ones, Heil Honey I'm Home!, pathos in comedy, the current lack of political satire and being thanked by Rik on stage at Exeter Uni, Plus of course lots about Bottom including its genesis, Alan Yentob wanting the title changed, how the Bottom pilot episode came about, seeing it recorded, the live shows and Guest House Paradiso. A View To A Kill represents the end of an era in the James Bond universe. Although not know at the time it was to be the final outing for Roger Moore. Hereafter, Bond movies took a slight tonal shift which means that this film proved to be the last of its kind.Sadly, in part due to the age of its leading man but also, it's uninspired, out of the box plot, flawed set up and tired dialogue, A View To A Kill is not celebrated. However, the dynamite performances of Christopher Walken, Grace Jones make the film a fondly remembered if not quite a classic movie among Bond fans.In this episode of the Oddjob Pod, Gary, Graham and Terry celebrate the film's triumphs. forgive its failures and reflect on the the Roger Moore era of James Bond.Download the MP3 or listen to this episode or on the player below. sent $$$ this week to Justice for Jacob Blake.https://gf.me/u/ytqyyx“On August 23rd my son was shot multiple times in the back by a Kenosha Police Department officer, after my son broke up an altercation by an unrelated party. The shooting has now left my son critically injured as he fights for his life. The extent of my son’s injuries is unknown, but we remain prayerful as he continues to undergo multiple rounds of operations to save his life. This fund is established to cover my son’s medical expenses, mental and grief counseling for our family and to assist our family in the days to come, as we continue to seek justice for Jacob. EGX is over for another year and it was bloody brilliant. Never mind all the great games we were lucky enough to play (more of that on this episode) the best part was being able to hang out with each other. We genuinely loved every minute and we hope that came across in the live streams, in this episode and in all the EGX-related content we put out over the coming days. Episode 17 is even shorter than usual, recorded as we walked out of EGX, accompanied by the one and only Catflap Barry (Flatcap Gary).
Talking Bottom is honoured to be joined by the legendary Ed Bye, no less than the director and producer of Bottom series 1 & 2! His CV reads like the cream of British comedy, with credits including The Young Ones, Filthy, Rich and Catflap, The Full Wax, The Detectives, Kevin and Perry Go Large, Canned Carrot, Lenny Henry in Pieces, The Vicar of Dibley, Not Going Out, My Family, Absolutely Fabulous, French and Saunders and 40 (forty!) episodes of Red Dwarf. We probe Ed about, amongst many other things, his journey into the world of TV and light entertainment, his first impressions of Rik and Ade, the genesis of Bottom and its production from the pilot through the series, avoiding BBC censorship, studio filming, fight choreography and injuries, sound effects and special effects, modern British comedy, losing Rik and a first hand account of how Bottom's opening credits came about.
