Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
We talked about this a long while ago, and I've revisited it, too, but it's time, my writing friends, to revisit it.So in writing one of the biggest tips that you start hearing starts in around third grade and it's “SHOW DON'T TELL.”And it's sound writing advice, but it's pretty sound life advice, too.How many of us have heard the words, “I love you,” but never seen the actions that give proof to the words? You can tell someone you love them incessantly for hours, but if you don't show them it, too, it's pretty likely that the words aren't going to rock that person's world.Telling is like this:Shaun was a hotty.Showing is like this:Carrying four grocery bags and a kitten, biceps bulging, Shaun walked through the parking lot, approaching a couple of older men. The smaller man gawped at Shaun, staring at his chest, the kitten, the bags, the biceps.“Wow,” the man said, pivoting as Shaun strode by. “Just wow.”The man licked his lips. His partner hit him in the back of the head lightly and said, “I am right here.”What Does This Mean? Both examples illustrate that Shaun is a hotty, but one states it as fact (telling) and one elucidates with examples (description, reaction, action). Here's One More Quick ExampleTellingThe lawyer liked to use big words to impress people.ShowingCarpenter stuck his thumbs into the waist of his pants, lowered his voice and said, “Pontification is one of the more mirthful and blithe aspects of the judical system.”IN REAL LIFE IT MATTERS TOO.In life, you want to show too, not just tell all the time. You can say, “I love you.”You can also grab someone's hand and say, “I love you.”You can also scoff and turn away and step on an ant and say, “I love you.”WRITING TIP OF THE PODThe actions matter. Showing matters.DOG TIP FOR LIFEShowing and telling simultaneously in life (not writing) works to get treats.Random THought LinkIt's right here. Federal Reserve Chair Powell spoke yesterday. Today, no fewer than five members of the Fed are speaking on the economic outlook, presumably to clarify what Fed Chair Powell “meant to say”. Actually, Powell's speechwriters did not say much controversial, keeping rate cut expectations alive. Media comment around this has tended to sensationalize—inflation is branded as sticky (it is not), and above target (moot point).

Part two is here y'all! This week, we're wrapping up coverage of Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning film, Lincoln (2012). The final days of the debate on the 13th Amendment begin in the House of Representatives and the siblings are ready for the radical Republicans to take them to school. Ross continues with History Corner as the Amendment comes to a vote, Carie has difficulty embracing the positivity of the outcome, and the siblings remark on the legacy of one of the greatest Americans to have ever lived. Today's episode is part Ross' History Corner as we delve into Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning blockbuster about the passing of the 13th Amendment by Abraham Lincoln in January of 1865. Ross frontloads the episode by explaining how we arrived at the amendment in history, Carie gets frustrated with all the white men who take forever to say nothing, and the siblings are reminded of the important work performed by "radical" politicians who were championing the fight against slavery. There is a fair amount of central bank noise on the calendar today. Federal Reserve President Bostic seems to be grabbing for any available media microphone, as part of a financial market conference. The Fed speakers today are unlikely to offer much new insight to investors. The Bank of England's chief economist is also speaking, and that may be of more interest in the wake of recently revised economic forecasts.

Economists are wading waist deep through central bank-speak today. Enormous numbers of ECB speakers are scheduled. There is so little expectation of change from the ECB that it would take an extraordinary comment to move markets. Bundesbank President Weidmann, who tends to be more hawkish, might excite some interest.
Fed Chair Powell's testimony to Congress did not meaningfully improve our understanding of the economy - there was not the depth of analysis that Fed President Williams provided. The media is inclined to give Powell's remarks the economic gravitas of former chairs Yellen or Bernanke, which is not necessarily a helpful interpretation. The media spin is 'dovish' but the signal per Williams is 'no rate changes now, quantitative policy is a different issue.'

In the live music experience the most important aspects that can be conveyed to the audience are authenticity and individuality. True nature and differentiation. Not being a good rock star helps. You wear any old clothes and grab a hot meal not leaving on a jet plane but taking a bus. The conundrum comes into play when a non-conformist becomes part of a mainstream sensation. Then the planes are waiting at SF International as my guest is ready to board to Japan because the trio is in high demand. My guest today has lived as authentic a life as possible in both music and education. He grew up in Manhattan and spent summers in Woodstock before it was overrun with kids at the greyhound bus station with a guitar in one had and a painting cap in another. The seasons of Woodstock encompass the moods of any real human. These moods have all poured out of my guest....the raw winter wind off the Catskills, the burning embers of summer into fall as Puff the Magic Dragon floats in from the Hudson. My guest is a master performer and an individual with a deep commitment to history and the ties that bind. Film canisters filled his house when John Simon was living in a land of Sunshine. It was not just Pontification it was the inquisition. The capturing of major events before interconnection. The music mixed with messages of social justice, racial equality and humanity. It does not surprise me that my guest has devoted a large portion of his recent years to education. The idea that the non-perfect girl like Janis Joplin can come along and stamp out the material world. Don't get limited by choice. Seek and Discover and stand up for yourself as long as your visiting this planet. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Because not much changes in today's chart - yesterday was the big news with the full moon and Mercury stationing direct - let's pontificate together about what we have experienced so far under Saturn Pluto and Uranus / Venus in Taurus. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Whoa nelly! We've made it to episode 11 and TBH, it's my favorite one yet. You get a lotta bang fer yer buck in this one: Discussion of new music I'm digging, a re-visit of Warren v Sanders after this week's Nevada debate where Warren shredded measly oligarch Michael Bloomberg, much to my delight, a rather odd interlude where a new character attempts to be both a play-by-play and a very, umm, colorful color commentary on our favorite sport of park golf, and a meandering ramble while I sat in the late winter/early pspring sun, where I talk about how I feel like an alien in regards to determining how money works, I share some health tips (Wim Hof method!) and some other shit I can't remember now! And then, chapters 1 and 2 from the second (of 4) book of my novel, "The Teacher and the Tree Man." Don't ever say I don't deliver the goods, folks! Enjoy!

Division by division rankings on who will finish Last-First in their respective divisions...I talk to myself for nearly an hour about the many questions of the NFL Season...Will the Chargers take the division from the Saints...Can the Vikings knock off the Bears at the top of the NFC North...Can the Colts overcome the loss of Luck...The answer to all of these questions is of course...No...But still turn this bullshit on and enjoy!
The lie detector test has determined...You're degenerate!

Fred and Blotto are back for another round of topics this week. Up for debate this week is the Roger Stone gag order, the Sarah Sanders anointment of Trump, and the lack of intelligence in the Trump administration. The trio try brews from Big Lake Brewing and Shorts Brewing. Knobs has a secret weapon to make beer taste even better.
Today, a discussion on the stark difference between pontification and problem solving. We often find ourselves discussing the same problems and issues that we have over and over and over again. However, why do we do this when we know that it's not solving anything? To counter this, I break down ways in which we can get out of this zone of pontification to get into a zone of action and problem solving. Although I discuss it through the lens of my education research, it can be applied in almost ANY setting. I hope that it proves to be valuable for you. Thanks for tuning in! As always, much love ❤️ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/matt-best/support

The college football regular season has ended and Ralph Gorga and I get into what that means, the four playoff teams, new college coaches, and some NFL craziness. We had a blast doing it and think you'll enjoy listening to it.
On our Agenda Jesse sits down with the Dark Lord himself, Dave "Crab Hatamoto" Hoyland, and UK rising star Mark Mottram to discuss all things World Championships. This episode was recorded in the week before Worlds to give you an insight into the testing and preparation process that we went through. Jesse, Mark and Dave outline their expectations of the metagame, the results of their testing, and why they are leaning towards playing particular decks. Dave and Mark discuss the feared Hydra and their reluctant shaper proclivities, while Jesse outlines the reasons why he is considering playing his Australian take on Potential Unleashed. The panel gives their predictions on metagame breakdowns, including predicted faction percentages, top 4 decks and winning decks. Watch out for Part 2 in the coming days, including post-tournament thoughts and insights from World Champion Wilfred E Horig and Top 6 competitor Alex Forndran! As always, get in touch!
