Through the lens of Christian mysticism and social justice, we discover how the Holy Spirit empowers us to speak truth and act boldly in the face of injustice. Thurman teaches us that spiritual formation and social transformation are inseparable – when we learn to listen deeply to the divine presence within, we find the courage to stand on holy ground and work for justice in community.ReferencesScripture: John 14:15–21About The Local ChurchFor more information about The Local Church, visit our website. Today we speak with Lou Florez about his life as a diviner and metaphysical reader who facilitates spiritual connectivity and transformational empowerment throughout his myriad roles as a Priest, lecturer, author, medicine maker, and activist. We speak about afro-carribean diasporic magical traditions and the problems of their systemic exclusion in the Euro-Western knowledge academy. Lou speaks of the importance of unknown, called the great mystery in world wisdom traditions, and we go on to discuss this in relation to the transformative powers of the arts, specifically music, and how the embodiment of this mystery can become a liberatory and revolutionary practice. We share magical stories and end by talking about the fundamentals of cleansing practices from Lou's most recent book The Modern Art of Brujería: A Beginner's Guide to Spellcraft, Medicine Making, and Other Traditions of the Global South (Ulysses Press, 2022). Lou Florez (Awo Ifadunsin) is a diviner and metaphysical reader who facilitates spiritual connectivity and transformational empowerment throughout his myriad roles as a Priest, lecturer, author, medicine maker, and activist. His work is inherently interdisciplinary and intersectional—bridging the fields of herbalism, ecology, divination, poetry, psychology, religious studies, gender and sexual studies, mixed-media art, and perfumery. Lou investigates the emanating Spirit present within all these fields and incorporates them into experiences that activate the Spirit within. Lou is the cofounder and executive director of Water Has No Enemy (WHNE), a nonprofit committed to healing justice. WHNE seeks to honor the timeless and enduring indigenous wisdom stolen from communities of color through centuries of slavery, colonization, and institutionalized oppression and reclaim it for today's world. The organization offers a collaborative space for changemakers to explore healing justice because we believe that true healing occurs at all levels—from the individual and social levels to our relationship to the natural world. We promote services and programming that intersectionally addresses social change, community activism, and transformation through indigenous, Yoruba, and African diasporic perspectives. We are living through unprecedented times; as each of us continues processing the election, and moving through waves of grief, disappointment, overwhelm, etc., it is vital to remain rooted in God, and come into beloved community with one another. Mom and I share a few of our thoughts post-election (check out two recent Instagram posts,  Jesus Is… and Reclaiming Christianity), drop into discussing what soul care is, why it matters, and share two soul care practices you can lean into for support - breath prayer and meditating on verses of scripture.  Breath prayer helps us to focus on a short phrase (God, Give me strength to keep going…or uplift a verse of scripture). You say the first part of the prayer on your inhale, and the second part on your exhale. You repeat this over and over until you feel God's spirit.  And Mom walked us through meditating on scripture which she breaks down into a 3 step process of which begins with prayer, and then we observe (write down what you think the verse is saying), interpret (go deeper here and ask >>> what does this verse mean?), and application (how does this verse apply to my life? How can I embody it within my everyday living?).  Sign up for our next Prayer Moment gathering: Thursday, Dec. 5, 8pm EST  Soul Care Resources >>>Two FREE downloads guiding you through breath prayer and meditating on scripture - prepared by Mom and I. >>> Check out our past episode - When It Feels Heavy, Connect to the Power of Prayer and Meditation - Check out our interview with  Jonelle of Young Prophets Collective. In this deep, thoughtful conversation, two of the men at the heart of the Climate Majority Project discuss their own journeys into eco-spirituality - what they believe it to be and why it's a core, foundational bedrock of their lives. If you follow anything else that Faith and I do together, you'll know that we believe heart-felt connection to the All That Is forms the bedrock of human existence and is the pathway to human flourishing, to our being good ancestors, to laying that foundation on which future generations can build a world where we are an integral part of the web of life. The whole of the Accidental Gods membership program exists to help people find ways to make this heartfelt connection and the Dreaming Awake contemporary shamanic training takes it more deeply. We don't often get to unpick this in depth here on the podcast. But long term friend of the podcast, the author, philosopher and academic, Rupert Read, suggested a while ago that we might like to have a three way conversation with him and Woodford Roberts who is an integral part of the Climate Majority Project of which they are both founder members. Both have been active in Extinction Rebellion. Both have moved on to believing that change happens in other ways, and both have at the core of their actions and activism a heartfelt connection to the All That Is, however we define it. We have regular guest appearances by people who work deeply in shamanic traditions, or other aspects of contemporary spirituality, but this is the first time we've had a chance to explore what we might call western 'eco-spirituality' in a way that is practiced distinctly from contemporary - or indigenous - shamanic practice. Rupert is a philosopher who has studied both Quaker and Buddhist traditions, naming Joanna Macey and Thich Nhat Hahn as his teachers. Woodford Roberts - who is called Rob within the movement - comes from a more meta-cognitive stance, but still deeply embedded within western psycho-spiritual philosophy, albeit with personal experience in the shamanic realities. So this was a deep, wide ranging, thoughtful episode and I hope it helps you to navigate your own routes to thinking, feeling and being in these turbulent times. So please welcome back Rupert Read and welcome for the first time, Woodford Roberts, both of the Climate Majority Project. Bios: Woodford Roberts is a writer based in Cornwall. With a focus on eco-spirituality and emotion, Woodford's work seeks to help readers stare down the truth of the metacrisis as he seeks to do the same, sharing his own spiritual journey of navigating the challenging terrain of a time between two worlds and the lessons found within. His work appears in Dark Mountain Books, Resurgence & The Ecologist. His first book, called 'How To Be Happy At The End Of The World' is currently in development, and he publishes on a Substack of the same name. Prof Rupert Read is co-director of the Climate Majority Project and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of several books, including This Civilisation is Finished, Parents for a Future, Why Climate Breakdown Matters and Do you want to know the truth? The surprising rewards of climate honesty. This podcast is focussed on all the ways that we can bring all of ourselves to the project of total systemic change: our minds, bodies, spirits, hearts - and the practicality of what we do.  Given this, we're delighted to welcome to the podcast Maddy Harland, the Co-founder and Editor of Permaculture Magazine . Maddy, and her husband Tim, co-founded a publishing company, Permanent Publications, in 1990 and Permaculture Magazine in 1992 to explore traditional and new ways of living in greater harmony with the Earth. She is the author of Fertile Edges—regenerating land, culture and hope and The Biotime Log. Maddy and Tim, have designed and planted one of the oldest forest gardens in Britain: once a bare field, it is now an edible landscape ,a haven for wildlife, and a reservoir of biodiversity. I met Maddy first back in the early days of this millennium when the whole Permaculture team was in the south east of England. More recently, they moved to Devon in the south west, where they are retrofitting a Devon longhouse to become zero carbon and restoring an old woodland to be a sanctuary for rare species like Dormice and Pied Flyctachers - and to be a place of healing and retreat for people. Maddy has been one of the beacons of the regenerative movement for decades. She's edited one of the world's most vibrantly alive magazines for over thirty years, she's interviewed - and edited - everyone who is anyone in this field from Vandana Shiva to Satish Kumar to Patrick Whitefield hundreds, literally, of the less well known, but absolutely cutting edge, inspiring people in all corners of the world who are living the change that will take us to the future we'd be proud to leave behind. If anyone knows where we're at, and what potential there is for change, she does. So it was a joy to be able to connect and explore ideas with someone who's given their life's energy to exploring the ways that change can happen. What if we broke away from fearing intuition, and began embracing it as another way God speaks to us? I recently sat down with Katrina “Trina” Dilag, founder of Radical Visionary Collective, 2x certified spiritual life coach, and social justice advocate.  We chat about healing as resistance to harmful systems, normalizing out-of-the box spirituality in churches, ditching toxic theology to develop an intimate relationship with God, and her latest offering, Intuition Activation, an 8 week course (launched June 19); it is a culmination of 20 years of experience in spirituality and healing which includes serving as a minister to youth and young adults and working within healing communities.  Trina supports conscious community leaders, ministers and mothers with stepping into their higher callings through alignment, abundance and inner healing. Throughout her work at the intersections of faith + justice (pulling from the wisdom of respected community elders of the 1960's Civil Rights Movement), she centers the power of visioning, ancestral connection, and decolonization to create a world of love & liberation for all. In October 2022, I held my first solo summit, The Soul of Business Summit and rebranded it to Ancestrally Rooted Business Summit. When I sat down to create my summit, The Hungry Medium was a dream guest in her grounded, sassy and wise magic- and I am so grateful she said YES!. She dives deep on how she grew through Christianity into her African traditions. I am beyond honored to share this powerful conversation with Kat Niambi, the Hungry Medium. Tune in to hear the ancestral patterns she transformed and the ones she leaned into to awaken and reclaim her magic and medicine.   Kat shares her ancestral journey that brought her to her current work and path.    How disbelief in the form of life in the church shaped her current spiritual path.    How ancestors who didn't agree in life may support you in bigger ways when on the other side.   Kat shares the white table misa messages she received from trusted spiritualists that kept asking, “ why aren't you doing this for people?”    Kat shares how her challenges are viewed as a series of events that had to occur so Kat could be who she is now.   She goes deeply into the question, “Is it Spirit or is it God?”   Christianity as a tool of the colonizer to strip Africans from their faith and identity as a historical fact.    Explains why Christianity and Black Nationalism don't align.   Why Kat calls herself a spiritual activist in her work and how grateful she is to be awake.    Her journey on social media during Covid and post-pandemic and trusting Spirit with your marketing.   What is the metaverse? The journey from the old days when spiritualists didn't even read on the phone.   Saying yes to opportunities that are in alignment can be stepping stones for more connection, relationships and expansion.   IG: https://www.instagram.com/thehungrymedium Website: https://www.thehungrymedium.com   Bio Kat Niambi, aka The Hungry Medium's practice is rooted in an African spiritual tradition for which she is grateful. Without this tradition, she wouldn't be where she is right now. For many, the “gift” of hearing Spirit doesn't present itself in a way that's easily  recognizable. “I was either lucky or my soul has been around the block a few times and has navigated this mind-body iteration (aka me) to where I am today; a clairsentient spiritualist who's able to make connections between spirit and the physical world.”    She likes to think of herself as a “spiritual activist”; using her mediumship to help others find direction, clarity and focus in their lives. The goal is to help YOU help yourself. By tapping into your own power to problem solve and to work towards achieving actionable goals, you'll feel more empowered to design a life shaped by you and endorsed by the Soul.

As someone on a lifelong journey of personal healing, helping thousands around the world heal from past traumas and pains, I've been mostly silent on the cultural systems of corruption that keep contributing to our bondange. But can we really be free when we're unwilling to look at the systems of corruption that contribute to the deterioration of our health, the greed and commerce that poisons our earth for convenience, and the leaders who put infrastructure into place that leads to the oppession of humanity?  Most people say they want to be conscious, but they really don't.  Because when you're conscious about the things in your life and the systems you benefit from that are hurting others, you're now responsibile.  But as I'm learning deeply from Spirit--we cannot fully be free until mankind is free, which means we have to open our eyes to the problems in our world and how we unconsciously contrubute to them.  This one might be a hard pill to swallow, but it's time for us to wake up and see the truth.  Not so we can actively get angry and perpetuate the division in our society, but so we can become the solution for the world's problems because we do it from a heart of love.  (@christablackgifford @womanscircle)

Host Lisa Garr continues the conversation today with our guests, NYT best-selling author of “Happy for No Reason” Marci Shimoff and scholar, philosopher, and researcher Jean Houston, Ph.D, as they further delve into the idea of finding possibility, even in the face of deep suffering. Through the crisis of recent years, we are also preparing for a new way of being. They discuss the idea of how we can be supported now, as “future humans.” We hold access to powers that have never before been united in the human heart. If we stay united together and realize we are part of the cosmos, we can bond in unity. We have the power within us to access cosmic tools of consciousness. It involves a change of perspective and accessing our “cosmic heart” to recreate our mind/body/spirit relationship. As we wake up, we are weaving a new pattern of consciousness with Spiritual Activism. Jean talks about her experience in Africa of being shot at by child soldiers and how she calmed the situation. She shares a meditative exercise to send love and a heart connection to individuals by visualizing every person on this earth connected in love. We CAN create a planet of peace. In this week's episode, I sit down with Xeres Villanueva, a #MoneyMagic student based in California, United States. Her parents moved with her from the Philippines for educational purposes. Xeres is a writer, storyteller, and healer. As a healer, she initiates people into their higher self version of themselves so they can start living their purpose. She starts off her whole process with card readings and then develops a program to walk you through this process of self-initiation. In this podcast, Xeres shares how she had two business failures and how she's been working through the God Wound and her view of the Divine to start receiving money from being a full-time healer. In this podcast, she shares how she had to trust the process and her spirit of money when she had the realization that first, she has to be in her purpose and then make money instead of first make money and then pursue her purpose. And how when she made that decision she started unlocking money from unexpected sources. She also walks us through her journey of how she's been healing her ancestral money story and how that's impacted her decision to be a writer and how that's led to her exploring new ways of making money.   I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it.   Click play and leave me a comment in the comments section below.   Timestamps: [2:04] Intro to Villanueva. “There are a lot of stages of looking at activism as an awakening process. We come from this state of being asleep. Of being in the illusion. And then we enter the state of awakening into the reality, and there is anger. There is this righteous anger of “how can corporations be doing this? why is my neighbor not recycling?” All of this blame, victimization, and anger…which is necessary. We need this righteous anger as a motivating force out of this asleep state…but then, what do we do with that anger? How do we transmute it? How do we use it to take it to the next state so that our activism is generative?" — Melissa Howey Melissa is an Austin, Tx based psychotherapist with a theoretical orientation based in psycho-spiritual depth work and trauma informed care, eco-psychology, ancestral healing and psychedelic integration work.  Resources: https://www.melissahowey.com/https://www.instagram.com/psyche_as_soul/https://www.joannamacy.net/https://maps.org/research/mdmahttps://www.beckleyfoundation.org/

The last in the current series, published July 4 2019, this is an incredibly fitting episode to end on. It features an in-depth interview with Janet MacGillivray and Eryn Wise of Seeding Sovereignty, an organization that rose out of the encampments at Standing Rock with a mission to amplify the voices and the stories of indigenous American youth. Janet, and environmental lawyer formerly affiliated with the EPA, begins by sharing the origin story of Seeding Sovereignty, and why this was a call to find truly impactful and sustainable ways to do her work in the world. We then move into a wide-ranging conversation about the true meaning of healing, looking at how modern wellness communities and practices are often doing more harm than good—and how to address this. In this episode Eryn and Ruby also discuss: Why it is time to work in partnership with indigenous peoples to tackle environmental issues What it means to be a spiritual activist The power of storytelling and deep listening as tools for healing Why decolonization begins with the individual—and means acknowledging the atrocities of the past How to engage respectfully with indigenous healing traditions How social media feeds narcissistic thinking that says some people are better than others Ways listeners can support the work of Seeding Sovereignty Discover more about Seeding Sovereignty and their work HERE and follow them on Instagram @seedingsovereignty
