Today, I'm sharing how to create beautiful and cohesive color palettes—an essential skill for any surface pattern designer or creative. My favorite source of inspiration? Nature. Endless combinations await discovery all around us, from the hues in a sunrise to the intricate details of a flower. Creating color palettes can be a joyful and intuitive process. I'll guide you through my four-step method: observing colors in your environment, capturing inspiration through photography, extracting colors digitally, and refining your palette to ensure balance and harmony. This approach brings depth and meaning to your work, transforming simple observations into palettes that feel authentic and connected to your creative voice. You'll also learn tips for selecting tones, incorporating neutrals, and evoking emotion through color. Finally, I'm excited to invite you to my free workshop, Your Pattern Design Playbook. This workshop, running through February 19th, will help you map out your first collection and explore ways to create income from your art.

Welcome back! One of our favorite style of shows to make is our "questions and answers" episodes where we answer questions that our viewers and listeners have sent in to us or questions that we hear repeatedly on phone conversations with our customers at Outdoor Legacy. We like addressing these things publicly to hopefully help our viewers that make have some of the same questions of their own. This week we talk about everything from daytime thermal use, tripods and rifle calibers. If you have questions you'd like to hear us talk about, please leave them in the comments and we'll try to include them on our next Q&A episode.

Imagine knitting with a color palette that resonates with your own personal experiences and connection with nature. It sounds magical, right? Well, that's exactly what we'll be exploring together in this episode. I share my own journey of finding color inspiration in the beauty of the world around me. You'll hear about a unique knitting project I worked on using a color palette which was a departure from my usual color choices, and the reactions it garnered. So, forget the traditional color norms, embrace the infinite color possibilities from nature, and knit with a color story that truly speaks to you! ( Definitely head over to the blog to see more!)Before you wonder how to select the right colors that would work well together, let me assure you that the color wheel is your best friend here. It is something I didn't dig into until later in adulthood and I learned some interesting practices that are easy for you to replicate, too, so that your knitting always delights you and never disappoints! I'll guide you through the basics of the color wheel, starting from the primary colors and how they combine to form secondary and tertiary colors. We'll discuss the concepts of complementary and analogous colors, and even monochromatic color schemes, to create harmonious and visually appealing color combinations for your knitting projects. So, forget the traditional color norms, embrace the infinite color possibilities from nature, and knit with a color story that truly speaks to you!• You can (and should!) always discover more here on the blog: encouragebetter.com/blog/color•Listen to the linen workshop • Download the free linen guide (which includes a free pattern and journal pages) And before you go, Dear Knitter, if you subscribe to the Encourage Better Knitting podcast consider sharing this podcast with a friend! There are a bunch of color wheels in his new book The Oil Painter's Handbook: A Contemporary Guide to Color Mixing, Pigments, Palettes and Harmony and for today's mini we focus on the one that's most relevant to painters for color mixing, the traditional subtractive color wheel. Referred to in the show as The Color Wheel. In the conversation, you'll learn how it's set up, what it's based on and then we dive into using it for color mixing. Learn more about Todd M. Welcome to the Corporate Casket, a weekly series where bad businesses go to die. Claire's: it used to be the go-to place to get your ears pierced and buy cute accessories for teenagers. In the late 90s and early 2000s, it may have even been one of the most popular stores in your local mall. However, Gen Z hasn't embraced the famous jewelry shop, and for good reason. Their makeup recalls for asbestos, policies on ear piercings, and junk jewelry is the stuff of the past. Is there a comeback for Claire's in the future, or are they doomed for good? Film critic and author Charles Bramesco had to look at movies in a new and different way while researching and writing his new book, "Colors of Film: The Story of Cinema in 50 Palettes" (out this week) which examines filmmaking through the prism of color. And one of his favorite eras, for that book and as a film lover in general, is the 1970s - so he selected 1971, a year in which the movies were smart, daring, experimental, and (at least in his top five) extremely horny. Plus, hear about the best single release week of the year (maybe the decade), when two all-timers hit theaters one day apart! When we first bought this home we fell in love with the uniqueness and character of it. Now that we've lived in it for a year we are ready to paint. I was going to go with a more neutral palette… but then I wanted a raspberry living room, and periwinkle doors, and everything has started to fall into place from there. I have been fascinated by color for the last year and a half and I talk through personal color palettes (in terms of fashion), how everything is trending neutral, how the ancient marble statues used to be painted, and how I am letting myself have a fun and cheerful home.
My guest in this week's Book Club podcast is the critic, novelist and art historian Chloë Ashby. In her new book Colours of Art: The Story of Art in 80 Palettes she takes a look at how the history of colour - how it was made, how much it cost, what it was understood to mean - has shaped the history of painting. She tells me about the age-old disagreement between the primacy of drawing and colour in composition, where Goethe and Gaugin butted heads with Newton, why Monet was so excited by red, how Titian got blurry… and how the first female nude self-portrait was, astonishingly, as recent as 1906.
