In today's show, we're diving deep into a painful piece of California history and the remarkable story of triumph that's emerged a century later. Our special guest is none other than George C. Fatheree III, a Harvard-educated attorney, Fintech Founder, and social impact entrepreneur who played a crucial role in correcting an age-old wrong against the Bruce family of Manhattan Beach. In the 1920s, Willa and Charles Bruce, a visionary black couple, had their beachfront property unceremoniously stripped from them through the dubious use of eminent domain. Their successful business was uprooted not because of development but because of their race, leading to a near wipeout of the Black community in this area. This isn't just a story of loss though—it's one of resilience, courage, and the power of community advocacy. Join Roberto and guest co-host Sergio C. Muñoz, a Mexican Banker and Founder of Intelatin, as George takes us through the emotional journey, the legal battles, and the moral victories associated with the return of Bruce's Beach. We also explore the broader implications of this case for Black America, reflecting on the significance of narrative busting and the work still to be done to address racial wealth gaps and systemic racism. Stay with us as we unpack the threads of this deeply human story, and perhaps, find your role in making a change. Welcome to Our Classroom!

Almost 100 years after the government took their land, it has been returned. This week, the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors unanimously approved that a beachfront property known as Bruce's Beach be transferred back to the descendants of its former owners, Willa and Charles Bruce. The Bruces bought their little corner of Los Angeles in 1912 and, in an era when segregated beaches were common, constructed the West Coast's first resort for black people, the Guardian reported. In 1924, after the relentless harassment of racist neighbors and the Ku Klux Klan failing to push out the community the Bruces built, the Manhattan Beach City Council condemned their portion of the neighborhood and seized over two dozen properties through eminent domain... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/smartrivas/message

The beachfront resort, Bruce’s Beach, run for and by Black residents of the community, located in Manhattan Beach, was one of the first enclaves of Black leisure in the Los Angeles area during the Jim Crow era. Willa and Charles Bruce bought the land in 1912 and despite harassment and violence from white neighbors, it thrived until the 1920s when the city council used eminent domain to seize the property for use as a park. The land sat unused for years until it was transferred to the state in 1948, then the county, and along the way turned into a park. Roughly a hundred years later in 2021, and worth an estimated $75 million, the descendants of the Bruces were awarded their land back through state legislation unanimously approved, a milestone in the fight for reparations and the return of land stolen from people of color. Dr. Alison Rose Jefferson, an independent historian, heritage conservationist, third generation Californian, and a 2021–22 Getty Conservation Institute Scholar in Residence based in Los Angeles, shares some of her research on Bruce’s Beach included in her most recent book, Living the California Dream: African American Leisure Sites during the Jim Crow Era (University of Nebraska Press). The book was awarded the 2020 Miriam Matthews Ethnic History Award by the Los Angeles City Historical Society for its exceptional contributions to the greater understanding and awareness of regional history. Her work on Bruce’s Beach, has been foundational to a current public policy initiative to rectify 1920s racist actions which chased Black people out of the area. Living the California Dream…has been optioned by actors Brad Pitt and Viola Davis’ production companies in a joint venture with Amazon to produce a scripted TV series. Join Dr. Jefferson and host Brad Johnson as they discuss how African Americans pioneered the nation’s “frontier of leisure” in Southern California in conjunction with their growing population in the region during the nation’s Jim Crow era (1900s to 1960s); the significance of leisure in pursuing the full range of human experience, fulfillment and dignity; and the meaning of spatial justice. We also hear from Dr. Jefferson about some of her other projects including Santa Monica’s Belmar History + Art and the Angels Walk LA Central Avenue heritage trail which both reconstruct and reinsert the historical African American experience in the regional landscape and American identity; upcoming exhibits; and on-going field trip programming for underserved youth. On this week's episode, Amber and Erika discuss land loss, the coded way that racially motivated land theft is often referred to in this country. Our guests are Kavon Ward and Ashanti Martin of Where Is My Land, a non-profit organization that helps Black families reclaim ownership of land that has unjustly been taken from them. Most notably, Where Is My Land assisted the descendants of Willa and Charles Bruce in regaining ownership of Bruce Beach in 2021 after it was stolen from their family through a racist eminent domain proceeding in the 1920s. Through a historical analysis of how property laws have fueled systemic inequity through processes such as eminent domain, condemnation, gentrification, and outright theft, it is clear that Black land ownership and wealth accumulation has been intentionally thwarted and undermined throughout American history. Tune in to learn how!
KFI News' Corbin Carson takes an in-depth look into the fight to reclaim Bruce's Beach, beachfront land in Manhattan Beach that was taken from Willa and Charles Bruce using eminent domain almost 100 years ago. Two amazing humans navigate the gray as they discuss a little known part of our history in Bruce's Beach. If you haven't heard this story in the news, you're going to want to tune in and perhaps do a little digging on your own. In 1912, Willa and Charles Bruce bought a plot of land on Manhattan Beach for a little over $1200. After building a prosperous black-owned business and community spot, they were forced from their land by LA County. In 2021, that stolen land was finally returned to their descendants. There is so much to unpack in this story - reparations, generational wealth, stolen land, America's reckoning with race. We do our best to unpack it.Support the show (https://cash.app/$blackblondepod)

Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a historic bill for California last week. Senate Bill 796 returns a parcel of land in Manhattan Beach, known as Bruce's Beach, to the descendants of Willa and Charles Bruce. The Black couple bought the property in 1912, and ran a dancehall, cafe, and lodge on it. But by 1924, city officials condemned the land and forced the Bruces to sell and leave. Now, almost a century later, the ownership of the parcel will be transferred to Willa and Charles Bruce's four remaining direct descendants. A new redistricting map in LA has two members of the City Council upset about losing most of the people who voted them into office. And a UCLA digital media scholar won a prestigious MacArthur “Genius” Grant.

The mid 19th Century brought a sea change to the tea industry. Demand continued to grow all over Europe. China's artisanal tea growers and the general unreliability of the China market due to all the well-known political and social disasters happening in China raise concerns. The idea to make a go at growing tea in India is seriously discussed. We meet Charles Bruce, the Father of India's Tea Industry. The botanist, horticulturist, and man of adventure Robert Fortune is also introduced. We close the episode with the exploits of Fortune's first China trip and his discovery that green and black teas both come from the exact same species of plant, Camellia sinensis. With all the well-known mid-19th Century headaches facing China's Manchu Qing rulers, the loss of the European tea market will soon be added to their woes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/smartrivas/message

Prime coastline property in Los Angeles County known as Bruce's Beach could be returned to descendants of its early 20th century Black owners if a state senate bill approved this week becomes law. In the 1920s, the Manhattan Beach City Council seized the beachfront land from Willa and Charles Bruce, who endured years of brutal harassment by white neighbors and the KKK. Its return could be a model for reparations in the state and comes as California's new reparations task force convenes. We'll talk about the history of Bruce's Beach and its significance amid broader efforts to compensate Black Californians for historical injustices.
The mid 19th Century brought another sea change to the tea industry. Demand continued to grow all over Europe and North America. China's tea industry, which depended mainly on countless artisanal tea growers rather than a few large-scale producers, creates bottlenecks and unreliability in the tea supply chain. The demand had become more than China's exporters could handle. This was also due in part to the well-known political and social disasters happening in China during the second half of the 19th century. The British East India Company begins to put serious consideration into growing tea in India to cut the Chinese out. We also meet Charles Bruce, the Father of India's Tea Industry. We also encounter the botanist, horticulturist, and man of adventure Robert Fortune. We close the episode with the exploits of Fortune's first China trip and his discovery that green and black teas both come from the exact same species of plant, Camellia sinensis. The famous Guangcai porcelain 光彩 of Guangzhou (Canton) is also briefly explained. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
