This is a special addition to the Merry Moog podcast. I found what is likely a one-of-a-disc private pressing by Frank Collett using the Moog Modular Synthesizer. This 45 RPM disc was recorded at Finetone Recording Studio in New York City and is inscribed with the hand-written message, “To John & Loretta: Merry XMAS. Composed and arranged by Frank Collett” This appears to be disc made of metal with a vinyl coating. One side includes his rendition of Bach's “Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring” plus a short tune called “Little Joey” (see below). The flip side contains the same recording of “Little Joey.” Dated December 22, 1970. Clearly made using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Collett (1941-2016) was a noted session pianist and sometimes led and recorded with his own trio. He was raised in New York. In 1968 he was accompanist to Sarah Vaughan. The following year he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He became the house pianist, with the orchestra in the main showroom of the International Hotel (which became the Las Vegas Hilton). It was during this period that he made this recording in NY. 01:57 49:44 17. Frank Collett, “Little Joey” (1970 Privately Made Release). Frank Collett using the Moog Modular Synthesizer. From a 45 RPM disc recorded at Finetone Recording Studio in New York City (see above). Dated December 22, 1970. Clearly made using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Collett (1941-2016) was a noted session pianist and sometimes led and recorded with his own trio. Moog Modular Synthesiser, Frank Collett. Whose Moog Synthesizer did he use to make this recording? I can only speculate and guess that he made the recording at the studio of Gerson Kingsley in New York. 01:56 51:40 18. Yamaha Electone GX-707 (GX-1), arranged by Keiko Ohta. Japan. Yes, the song originally made famous by Elvis Presley. Ohta was a female Electone star from Japan. Koichi Oki, “Jingle Bells” from The Man From Yukiguni (1975 TIM/RS). Japan. Koichi Oki's Christmas album performed solely by his Yamaha Electone E-3. “Yukiguni” means snowland. Oki was a hugely popular Electone artist in Japan. 01:50 01:09:46 25. Koichi Oki, “Winter Wonderland” from The Man From Yukiguni (1975 TIM/RS). Japan. Koichi Oki's Christmas album performed solely by his Yamaha Electone E-3. “Yukiguni” means snowland. Oki was a hugely popular Electone artist in Japan. 02:18 01:11:34 26. Drums, Percussion, Keyboards, Jacky Rosati; Guitar, Jean Louis Suzzoni; Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Composed by, Marc Ceccotti; Keyboards, Noël Damon. I was sent this as a promotional album back in 1985 with a kind little note from the artists. Sorry it took me so long to put the Christmas-related track in my podcast. This is great example of synth-pop from France in the 1980s. 04:22 01:13:52 27. Bob Wehrman, John Bezjian and Dusty Wakeman, “Joy to the World” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1984 Tropical Records). Produced in L.A., a collection of pre-fab synthesizer classics. Romantic Synthesizer, “So This is Christmas” from Christmas Memories (1983 Dureco Benelux). French-Dutch album. Arranged, produced, synthesizers by Gerto Heupink, Robert Pot. We don't often hear an instrumental rendition of this Lennon and Ono X-mas tune. 03:22 01:22:34 30. Swinging Buildings, “Praying For A Cheaper Christmas” from Chantons Noël - Ghosts Of Christmas Past (1981 Les Disques Du Crépuscule). From a compilation album of Christmas-related tunes. This group was once rumored to be New Order in disguise. But no, they were in fact The Bowling Balls in disguise. 03:07 01:25:54 31. Bernie Krause, Philip Aaberg, “Feliz Navidad” from A Wild Christmas (1994 Etherean Music ). This delightful cassette is from Bernie Krause, known for his Moog explorations with Paul Beaver back in the day. The whole Star Wars crew seems to have a part in this holiday album. I wanted to highlight a track featuring the melodious electronic beeping of R2D2. 03:33 01:34:34 Opening background music: Sounds Of Broadcasting 1, “Christmas Logos” from Sounds Of Broadcasting #6088 (1975? William B. Tanner Company, Inc.). Broadcast library track produced for the holidays. Produced using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Notice how the melody imitates a familiar tune without ever hitting the same notes. A copyright thing. Another name of this track might as well be, “It's Beginning to Sound A Lot Like Christmas.” Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Tijuana Christmas” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). USA. Moog Modular Synthesizer. Don Voegeli, “Chanukah” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). USA. Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. It's time to put a Milwaukee native on the podcast. Famous pianist, singer, and actor Liberace was born in West Allis, Wisconsin. His father was an immigrant from Italy and his Polish mother was born in Menasha, Wisconsin. During his heyday he was the highest paid entertainer in the world. He made his millions performing at concerts, recordings, television, movies, and endorsements. He was referred to as a one-man Disneyland due to his outlandish costumes. He told me a story about his clothes and the IRS. Liberace was a huge box office attraction into the 80s at the Las Vegas Hilton and Lake Tahoe, where he earned $300,000 a week. He told Johnny Carson: “I don't cry all the way to the bank any more – I bought the bank!” Remember when the Chordettes included him in their number one hit “Mr. Sandman.?”
THE FIRST 50 YEARS More than 50 years ago, Lynn Royce Taylor and friend David Musselman formed a duet they named the Gospel Chords. From the start they were singing nearly every week. A mere three years later they had become a quartet and were now nationally performing in churches, fairs, corporate events, TV and radio, and will record a total of 16 vinylLPs over the next 12 years.. The Chords continued for over twelve years. By now, Royce had three young boys and set his singing career aside to finished college and work in business and marketing and raise his young family. One of the highlights in this time, was “Royce, Your Voice in the Morning” radio personality on WKTK 96.7 FM contemporary Christian radio station. In 1991, the Vogues invited him to sing tenor. In the 60s the original four members charted 24 popular hit songs including, “You Are My Special Angel, Turn Around Look at Me, Five O'clock World, and, You're The One,” and were #3 behind the Beatles on the BillboardMusic Charts. Even now, he continues to sing this great oldies Rock 'n Roll in fun shows across America. Royce moved to Nashville, TN and returned to Gospel Quartet music in 2002. Joining the Stamps Quartet, and Elvis' Imperials introduced him to the world of Elvis Presley. this amazing career has paired with the Colorado Symphony, Radio City Music Hall, and Historic Cathedrals in Europe and the UK, as well as 5 world tours with Big Screen Multimedia Show, “Elvis Presley in Concert” sharing the stage with the original cast of Elvis' Las Vegas Hilton show: TCB Band and orchestra. For another eight years, he toured Europe with the TCB Band; James Burton, Glen D. Hardin and Ronnie Tutt. From his Nashville home, he continues to sing a variety of popular and gospel music and take the calling to share the living Word of God and message of love. His mandate is to entertain and inspire around the world. From Paris France to Paris Texas, Manchester England to Manchester Tennessee, Vienna Austria to Vienna Ohio, Royce Taylor is enjoying an Extraordinary / Ordinary Life. Touring the United States and the Europe, either as a solo performer or tenor for top charting hit maker, The Vogues, Royce has found the balance between singing popular Rock 'n Roll and continuing his Christian Music ministry. This is affirmed when a Pastor says, “Five O'clock World” was a favorite song or when someone from an oldies show tells him that the Gospel Music he's shared has touched and spoken into their life. As tenor for the Vogues, Royce regularly performs with stars like, Frankie Avalon, Bill Medley, the Beach Boys, Gary Puckett, and other classic rock 'n roll heroes. You can also see him hanging out with Gospel Music legends at a Bill Gaither Homecoming. You may catch him doing a show at Wembly Arena in London England singing the songs of Elvis Presley. It's quite common to find him singing at a church, sharing the Gospel Music that pilots his life. In all of these situations, he is comfortable and accessible to all.
There's no question that Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world, and all through the city's history, it's played host to some of the most legendary acts of all time. Some names come to mind instantly, like The Rat Pack...Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr. There's Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton who's been headlining in Vegas since the mid-1960's. And of course, there's the King Of Rock N' Roll, Elvis Presley who sold out a record 636 shows at the International Hotel (later, the Las Vegas Hilton). But one performer made his mark on Las Vegas before any of those people. In fact, some would say he paved the way for not only past legends but the massive residencies that would come decades later. That performer is the one and only Liberace... My guest for this episode of the podcast is Claire White, the Director of Education at The Mob Museum in Downtown Las Vegas. Before she joined the Mob Museum, Claire spent several years working at the now-closed Liberace Museum, also in Las Vegas, where she learned all about the long & storied career of "Mr. Showmanship". If you want to check out some of the highlights of Liberace's life, check these out: Liberace performing "Chopsticks" Liberace live with the London Philharmonic Orchestra Liberace's dual role as villains, "Chandell" and "Harry" on the classic TV series, Batman Liberace's appearance on The Muppet Show Liberace hosts on MTV in 1985 __________________________________________________________________________ Become a Jeff Does Vegas Insider today for only $5 USD/month & enjoy all kinds of cool perks like early access to new episodes, commercial-free versions of EVERY episode, invites to exclusive live streams & videos, insider-only virtual hangouts and even real-life in-person hangouts IN Las Vegas! Baz Luhrmann directed a new film, which was recently released on HBO Max, about Elvis Presley's life from childhood to riches, fame, and eventual demise. The film stars Austin Butler as Elvis and Tom Hanks as his devilish manager, Colonel Tom Parker. No Elvis story is complete without our city, as Elvis had a seven-year-long residency at the International Hotel (which later became the Las Vegas Hilton and is now the Westgate). Co-hosts Vogue Robinson and Dayvid Figler talk with producer Layla Muhammad about Elvis' legacy in Las Vegas. Elvis was a superstar, a rock 'n' roll icon, who had impersonators on the Strip prior to his passing. We have Elvis-themed weddings, sell Elvis tchotchkes in our airport, and fake Elvis accompanies our mayor at parades… But are we honoring his legacy, or have we all turned him into a caricature? This week we welcome Dean Z as Ultimate Elvis! When Dean was 3, the documentary "This Is Elvis" was being broadcast on television. He immediately cleared the coffee table, jumped on top of it and started trying to imitate Presley's every move. Not long after, Dean's mother made his first Elvis jump suit, and he was on his way. After performing in several shows of his own, Dean took off for the bright light city that would set his soul on fire, Las Vegas, at age 17. He relocated to the entertainment mecca to attain the goal of establishing himself as a well-known act. Throughout the next 12 years, Dean performed in Vegas, and has paid tribute to "The Memphis Flash" in Japan, Australia, Norway, Denmark, England, across Canada and the United States. Dean soon earned a spot with the World's Greatest Live Tribute Show, "Legends in Concert," then in 2007, moved to headlining the show in Branson, Missouri. In 2013, Dean decided it was time to go after the title of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist. He and the 28 other semi-finalists competed for the top ten spots on August 14th with the Finals coming three days later. He brought the house down, and was soon presented with a championship belt, the title of Ultimate Elvis 2013 from EPE, a check for $20,000 and tens of thousands of new fans. The year 2014 was a banner year for Dean, who received the Heart Of The King Award in Las Vegas at the former Las Vegas Hilton, on the same stage the Elvis himself performed over 700 shows during the 1970's. Dean also had the pleasure of being a part of the national touring production Elvis Lives, a live musical highlighting Elvis' career that features world champions from the Ultimate Elvis® Tribute Artist ContestTM . As Dean's success as an entertainer and personality grew, so did his creativity. Dean combined his life, love, passion and influences to create a unique concert and show experience, with Broadway-worthy dance moves and spontaneous audience interaction called "The Dean Z Show." The show featured Dean's boundless energy and youthful exuberance as he accompanies the audience on an eclectic musical journey into the bygone eras of soul, rockabilly, rock 'n' roll, pop, and rhythm and blues. During the production, the award-winning and internationally acclaimed entertainer performed the music that inspired his passion for performance, including songs from Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke and so many others. Since its sold out premiere, “The Dean Z Show” has been mesmerizing audiences of all ages across the country, and will continue to do so. Dean will be presenting “Dean Z – The Ultimate Elvis” at the Clay Cooper Theatre. For tickets and information, call 417 -332-2529; or visit ClayCooperTheatre.com. Also visit Dean's website: DeanZ.com
Kristine W is pushing dance floors forward this Fall with her new single, “Can't Look Back”, the first release from her upcoming album. Produced by James Hurr, one of the masters of UK House, the song is a lush, soulful club groove, made even more powerful with its message of rising up and appreciating the day. It was inspired by the passing of Kristine's mother. “Though she faced unbearable loss during her lifetime, my mother was a perpetual optimist,” Kristine explains. “She never wallowed in pain from the past. She chose to forge ahead, holding tightly to hope, faithful in her belief that tomorrow would be a brighter day.” Kristine W's “Can't Look Back” is being distributed globally through The Orchard and is available NOW. Kristine W wrote “Can't Look Back” with Mark Matson and Tony Moran, but is convinced that her mother helped in its creation, too. “Mom's spirit is so much a part of the lyrics of this single. I really feel like she was holding the pen on this one.”She says the element that sets “Can't Look Back” apart from other tracks playing in clubs right now is that it is a real song with two verses, a chorus, a bridge and a B section. “You don't hear many bridges in songs these days. It gives the feeling that the song is carrying listeners on a healing journey.”Along with the James Hurr original, the “Can't Look Back” remix package includes an impressive list of some of today's top global producers. Beyond Chicago provides fresh radio edits and JSquad brings a progressive NYC house vibe to the song. The Orchard is also releasing three lyric videos to support the “Can't Look Back” release. The first, featuring the James Hurr original, is available now. Lyric videos for the Beyond Chicago and JSquad mixes of “Can't Look Back” will release in the next few weeks. Kristine W is a true dance music ICON. After headlining her own show at the Las Vegas Hilton, winning several 'Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year' awards and being officially sanctioned as the entertainer who performed more live shows at the Las Vegas Hilton than any other performer in its history, including Elvis. The award led to June 28th being officially sanctioned Kristine W Day in the state of Nevada. She began recording pop, R&B and dance tracks in the nineties. “Feel What You Want” was her first single to reach #1 on Billboard in 1994. Since then, Kristine W has had a steady flow of chart toppers. “Stars,” from her 2019 album, Issues Episode 1: Love and Lies was her 17th Billboard #1. She now ties Mariah Carey for the sixth-most No. 1s since the chart's August 28, 1976, inception.I had so much fun recording this episode with you GURL!!! A New Star Trek: The ExperienceFor Trek fans in the late 90s and early 2000s, there was a chance to experience our favorite franchise in person. From 1998 to 2008, "Star Trek: The Experience" lived at the Las Vegas Hilton, allowing visitors to walk through a Trek "museum", visit shops, and have drinks in a recreation of Deep Space Nine's promenade, including chatting with Ferengi, Borg, and other characters. The two main "rides" were "Klingon Encounter" and "Borg Invasion 4-D", where you could visit the bridge of the Enterprise-D or avoid Borg assimilation near the Delta Quadrant. In the 2020s, no such place exists, outside of the recreation of the TOS sets in Ticonderoga, NY. What would a "Star Trek: The Experience" look like today? How would we include the 21st Century Trek series? How do you balance 20th Century "legacy" Trek attractions with current/new series? How many sets do you build? What's realistic with a venue's budget? The trio pitches their new attraction for Trek fans - let us know what you would include!

You find weird things about Las Vegas once you're there for more than a long weekend. There aren't any bookstores anywhere near the strip. The entire place has a kind of druggy rhythm - taxi drivers and breakfast chefs in the morning, alcohol and smoke in the evening. It smells like bad cigars and mothballs and plastic and sunscreen. And it's a great place to set an apocalyptic rock song. In this episode we discuss: Writing impressionistic narratives through word collages Using instruments intentionally for the things they're uniquely good at (and not just putting a strummed acoustic behind everything) The Star Trek themed bar in the lobby of the Las Vegas Hilton

This week we welcome, The Ultimate Elvis, Dean Z!
By 1973 Elvis had definitely not left the building. In fact, January 1973 would be the month that Elvis Presley would broadcast a concert live via satellite to 38 countries. The concert would air in the United States on NBC in April 1973, and would be the basis for the album we are featuring - Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite, the four-month delay being a result of a conflict with Super Bowl VII (which Miami Dolphin fans will recall as the culmination of Miami's undefeated season).Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, got the idea of a live satellite broadcast from Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China. There is also speculation that Parker took this step in lieu of an international tour to avoid revealing his status as an illegal immigrant in the United States (Parker was Dutch). The concert was scheduled at the conclusion of the fifty-nine show engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton. The special was produced by Marty Pasetta, who had produced television specials for others like Perry Como, Glen Campbell, and multiple specials from Hawaii for Don Ho. Pasetta was concerned after seeing what he considered a lackluster live Elvis show in Long Island. Despite a dismissive stance from Colonel Parker, Pasetta took his ideas directly to Presley. He wanted a lower stage with a runway, allowing better audience participation. He wanted mirrors to frame the stage and neon lights to read "Elvis" in the language of all the countries to which the concert was broadcast. Finally, and most controversially, he wanted Elvis to lose weight for the show. Presley was impressed with his frankness, and took up his ideas, even embarking on an exercise routine at Graceland. Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite would bookend the comeback era for Elvis which was started with his 1968 television special. Elvis would encounter difficulties in his family life, health, and prescription drug use that would eventually result in his untimely death in 1977. Also Sprach Zarathustra/See See RiderThe Ricard Strauss tone poem made famous in "2001: A Space Odyssey" starts off the concert. The intro leads into the blues standard "See See Rider" first performed by Gertrude "Ma" Rainey in the 1920's, and covered by many performers including Chuck Willis, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, and the Animals.Burning LoveDennis Linde wrote this song for Elvis in 1972, and it was a big hit, rising to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track would be the last Elvis song to reach the 1op 10 in the U.S.My WayThis song is a cover originally performed by Frank Sinatra in 1969. The lyrics are from Paul Anka. Although it remains closely associated with Sinatra, it would also become a staple of Elvis performances in the 70's, and would hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after Presley's death.American TrilogyCountry composer Mick Newbury wrote this medley, and it would be popularized by Presley as the showstopper for many of his concerts. The medley includes the 19th century southern song, “Dixie,” the marching hymn of the Union army, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and the African American spiritual “All My Trials.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Bonanza"The final episode of this long-running Western TV series aired in this month. STAFF PICKS:Papa Was a Rollin' Stone by the TemptationsBruce's staff pick is a funky and long song, with the album version of the song running 11 minutes and 46 seconds. Originally released by The Undisputed Truth, the Temptations would take this song to number 1, and would win 3 Grammy awards. “Papa was a rollin' stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home, and when he died, all he left us was alone.” You Turn Me On I'm a Radio by Joni MitchellRob heads into the folk genre with singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell and this single from her fifth studio album. David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Neil Young all participated in the recording session for this song, but only Nash's harmonica work made it to the final cut. This was Mitchell's first top 40 hit in the United States. Dixie Chicken by Little FeatWayne's Southern Rock staff pick was actually recorded by a Los Angeles band. Bonnie Raitt sings backing vocals on this song. The story is about a guy who marries a girl in a drunken haze, only to be left shortly thereafter.Living In the Past by Jethro TullBrian's pick is a 5/4 metered song by rock flutist Ian Anderson. This is the highest charting track from Jethro Tull. It was a rejection of the happy tone that was fashionable in the post-Beatles music of the time. Despite its success, Anderson did not like it. FINISHING TRACK:I Can't Help Falling in Love With You by Elvis PresleyElvis closed out his concert with this song, and we're closing out this week's podcast the same way..

Star Trek has inspired seven television series, with another few on the way, thirteen movies, and, of course, multiple attractions throughout the years. Let’s start in Hollywood, at Universal Studios. In 1975, Universal opened the Screen Test Theatre to show off their hit television shows and allow audiences to be part of the action. In 1988, this theater received a seven million dollar upgrade and became the Star Trek Adventure. Similar to iterations that came before it, the Star Trek Adventure allowed members of the audience to play a role in their own Star Trek adventure. Featuring highly detailed sets and costumes, this attraction replicated the movie era of the original series. Guests would partake in a conflict with the series long-time baddies, the Klingons, which would all be recorded on a keepsake VHS, available for purchase, of course. The Star Trek Adventure would later be added to Universal Studios Florida as well, as part of the Screen Test Home Video Adventures from 1991 to 1994, but this version was far less detailed. Perhaps the greatest Star Trek attraction of them all was the 70 million dollar permanent (or not so permanent) Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas, NV. Housed at the former Las Vegas Hilton, The Experience was the mecca of Star Trek attractions. Originally envisioned as a full scale replica of the refitted Enterprise NCC-1701, the attraction eventually opened as a combination museum/ride experience. Opened on January 3rd, 1998, Guests first encountered the History of the Future, a museum featuring props from the series and films to that date. They then found themselves, through means of an ingenious transporter effect, aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Guests were plunged into a time-travel story where they would visit sets from the Next Generation starship and eventually board a shuttle to save the very existence of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Upon exiting the ride, Guests could then explore the environs of space station Deep Space Nine from the series of the same name. In 2004, the Borg Invasion 4D attraction was added to The Experience, this time centered around an encounter with Star Trek's most infamous villains, and set in the Star Trek: Voyager timeframe. Like the Klingon Encounter before it, Borg Invasion 4D featured actual cast members from the Star Trek series. Unfortunately, Star Trek: The Experience was not long lived. Due to declining attendance, the attraction closed on September 1st, 2008, after only ten years of operation. Interestingly, another home to the Borg Invasion 4D attraction, Space Park Bremen in Germany, also closed rather prematurely, leaving no active iterations of the ride. Since the closing of the Experience, multiple touring exhibitions have been developed to continue bringing the sets and props of the beloved franchise to it’s fiercely loyal fanbase. Venues such as the Kennedy Space Center, the Henry Ford, the Museum of POP Culture in Seattle have all hosted these encounters. Star Trek has even made the jump back into theme park territory, with the opening of the Star Trek: Operation Enterprise roller coaster at Movie Park Germany. Again themed to Star Trek: The Next Generation, this coaster features a heavily themed queue and ride experience, including a visit, once again, to the bridge of the Enterprise-D. Surely more experiences shall arise for this classic franchise. Concept art has been seen of new developments for theme parks worldwide, and rumors still pop up every once in a while for large scale installations at major players like Universal Studios. With new shows under development and a long history of inspiring scientists and explorers, the Star Trek legacy is far from over, and is sure to “live long and prosper”.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was a Star Trek attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton. It featured two rides, Quark's Bar, a Museum of the Future, a gift shop, and, shockingly, none of us ever went to it.More Star Trek attractions next week on The Second Gate!Patreon.com/podcasttheride

This time around, he joins us as one of the three newest inductees into the American Gaming Association's Hall of Fame. Palmer talks about that, about the aforementioned hotel he still intends to build some day and about a particularly wild birthday meal he had on an island in Fiji. That's all coming up. Also, we excerpt our interview with comic Hal Sparks, the former “Talk Soup” host and “Queer As Folk” star who appears this weekend at the Las Vegas Hilton. It was Sparks' show, you might recall, that Vince Neil interrupted in order to confront a former girlfriend. The entire Sparks interview will be in our podcast feed as an extra edition, but we'll play a taste of it this hour.

Jay Kornegay can't even imagine the odds. Funny, because as the Las Vegas Hilton sports book's executive director, Kornegay spends every day dealing with numbers. But he thought it would be nearly impossible for anyone to win the Supercontest, the Hilton's annual football handicapping contest, two years in a row. "It's such a long shot," Kornegay said. "It would be like UNLV winning the BCS National Championship." Steve Fezzik defied the odds. Fezzik, who has bet on sports professionally for the last nine years in Las Vegas, finished with the best record in the Supercontest and won the grand prize. Fezzik went 52-29-3 in the contest, in which each bettor picks five NFL games each week of the regular season, and won $196,800. It was the first time in the history of the 20-year contest that a handicapper won back-to-back titles. "If you ask me what sport is my specialty, I'd say football, but it's really football contests," said Fezzik, who posts his weekly picks and is a moderator at lvasports.com. "To make a comparison, I would say straight bets in football are like cash games in poker. A player like Phil Hellmuth is a much better tournament player than cash games. I would say I'm a lot like Phil Hellmuth in football."

Winning a football handicapping contest takes a ton of effort .... Winning a football handicapping contest back-to-back takes a ton of effort and a ton of talent. In the history of Vegas handicapping contests, starting with the original at the old Castaways, through the Stardust and up to the Las Vegas Hilton, nobody has ever won two years in a row. Until now, that is. The honors go to this week's podcast guest Fezzik, a local handicapper and bettor who made a name for himself last year when he anted up his $1500, chose his five teams a week and finished at the top of the heap. In 2009, his record of W53 L29 T3 earned him the title again and the prize of $196,800. The "football hero" talked at length about sports betting, how he goes about handicapping, and his road to success.

In retrospect, Dee Snider was born to play Vegas. And finally, thanks to Monster Circus at the Las Vegas Hilton, that time has come for the long-haired, gravel-throated, lingerie-wearing front man for the heavy metal band Twisted Sister. The former choir boy from Long Island speaks this hour to Steve about the show, about just how subversive all that hard-rocking crossdressing was back in the day and about Barry Manilow's reaction to sharing his showroom with this bunch. Plus, is Gene Simmons of Kiss really is as big a jerk as he seems? Snider has some interesting thoughts on that, too. In Banter: Le Reve's new ending, the Venetian's umbrella act, Wynn on TV, Hellmuth via chariot, bye-bye whore tax and a great new Vegas pay-per-view idea.
