Long-time NFL front office personnel man Mike Ackerley joins Pro Mindset host Craig Domann and shares his perspective on what creates “draft value” and the difference between the front office mindset and the football coach mindset related to evaluating and drafting players. The NFL Draft is the #1 supply chain mechanism for NFL teams adding talent to their rosters. Mike also discusses his personal experience as the West Coast Scout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers leading up to the 1993 NFL Draft when they drafted safety John Lynch out of Stanford University in the third round. He shares insights about the scouting and coaching opinions about Lynch, as well as, the impact of Lynch’s pedestrian 4.73 forty time at the NFL Combine. Lynch was widely considered a 1st round performer but was rated a 3rd rounder in terms of draft value due to his speed concerns. This month Lynch is again a finalist for the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame in Canton, Ohio. Lynch is looking to become the 5th player from the 1993 NFL Draft Class following Willie Roaf, Michael Strahan, Jerome Bettis and Will Shields.Prior to his 20+ year NFL personnel career, Mike coached in college football for 20+ years as well. In fact, Mike was Craig’s position college at the University of Kansas. As a seasoned college coach, Mike believes he had an edge in scouting since (a) he was accustomed to scouting players as a college coach as a part of his recruiting, and (b) he could relate to and anticipate what his pro coaches were looking for in terms of evaluation factors.

He never missed a start as an offensive lineman during his 14 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. Ironically, his very first NFL running back was our dear friend Marcus Allen! Will Shields' life is marked by discipline and consistency. Will reminds us to be kind to everyone we encounter because you never know what the other person is going through. Will Shields and his wife Senia (Sen-ya) started a foundation in 1993 shortly after Will was drafted in the third round by the Kansas City Chiefs. The "Will to Succeed" is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that facilitates programs, provides assistance and resources to individuals, families and other charitable organizations who have little or no access to other aid. Danan Hughes chose Iowa and coach Hayden Fry because of the promise to let him play both baseball and football, including a deal that he didn't have to participate in football workouts if he was playing for the baseball team. Hughes only played spring football for one season in college, but even doubling up sports didn't slow him down. After 4 catches for over 100 yards in the Hawkeye spring game, Hughes rushed over to the baseball field to play in the second game of a double-header against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Hughes and the Hawkeyes went to the 1991 Rose Bowl and were Big Ten co-champions. Hughes is one of the all-time Hawkeye leaders for touchdown receptions (tied for 2nd), receptions (3rd), and receiving yards for a freshman (2nd). After a stellar career on the diamond for the Hawkeyes, Hughes was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1992 amateur draft by the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Hughes played 2 seasons for the Helena Brewers in the Pioneer League. Hughes was then drafted in the 7th round 1993 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs and fully committed himself to football. Hughes was part of the mid-1990s Chiefs that featured some incredible talents, including Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Will Shields, and Derrick Thomas. The Chiefs went to the AFC Championship game during his rookie season and made the playoffs in nearly every season in Kansas City. Hughes retired after 6 years in the NFL with over 400 yards receiving, almost 800 return yards, and a perfect 100% completion percentage going 2-2 as a passer. www.moonlightgrahamshow.com

We can also connect via Twitter: @richtakesports Or you can email me: richmond@richtakeonsports.com   This week in the Rich Spotlight our guest is James Trapp most notably known now as Minister James Trapp on Twitter as his life has unfolded into serving others. James’s story is one of how talent can take you far greater than you can ever imagine through God given athletic ability but also the destruction that can occur when you become so self-absorbed in yourself. James was a stand-out cornerback at Clemson University and was selected in the 3rd Round of the NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders. He was also a world class sprinter and a two-sport athlete at Clemson from 1989-1993 where in 1992 he was the 200 meter indoor NCAA Champion and won 2 gold medals in international competitions and was selected as an alternate for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. James was not a track guy playing football. He was a football player that just happened to run track and ultimately reaching the pinnacle in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens by winning Super Bowl 35 in 2000 and you’ll understand what I mean after hearing his story. James’ journey started in Greenville, SC. Gives special recognition to Sam Wyche and his store because they gave him his first pair of football cleats. Played all sports in the neighborhood. Football was a part of his life because it was a get away from the life that he was living. You become cocky once you realize that you’re good at sports. Started playing football at 7 or 8.  Neighborhood vs. Neighborhood. Loved the physicality of football and become a sport that he really enjoyed. Baseball was too boring and basketball too many fouls. Moved out of South Carolina in Texas and Mom was in the military. In Fort Hood living in a new environment and ran track but did not play football. Moved to Oklahoma and started playing football and played QB. Very arrogant and cocky and the only thing that drove him was him. Played with Will Shields who is an NFL Hall of Famer and most of his coaching staff is still alive. Only players that could play were the ones that wanted to play at the next level. Coaches provide so much than just coaching. Knew he was better than everyone else in junior high school. Normally all kids from Lawton HS went to Oklahoma, however, Coach Switzer was not confident he would still be head coach and James actually want to go to Clemson and play for Coach Danny Ford. He was called a traitor by all of the people in Oklahoma when he signed with Clemson. Only ran track at Clemson because he couldn’t start on the football team as a freshman and he was very cocky on the track and he was a loud mouth. Had a to make a decision if he was going to really put in the effort to train more and better to compete against the best in the world. Changed his decision to fish only and the new training made the biggest difference. Started to make significant improvements and then made the Olympic team. Herman Moore torched him in a game. He knew he could play in the NFL and kept pushing forward and was kicked off the team by Ken Hatfield. James had a deal with Adidas on the table but still...
