Before we get to the interview, a message from Anne:‘Hosting this podcast and interviewing all these amazing people has been such an enriching experience, and I had no idea the impact it would have on me and my listeners. With every conversation, I feel changed by my guests' stories. Because it is stories that stay with us, that and how people made us feel.'  On that note, dear listener, can you please do me a favour? If you enjoy Out of the Clouds, please rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. It helps make it stand out and will support booking of upcoming guests.'Episode NotesKnown in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Annie's journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals  her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Aaron is the man behind "The Align Method: 5 Movement Principles for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind and Stress-Proof Life." I assumed our discussion would be about body mechanics, posture, and mobility, but mainly, we discussed existential conflicts. It is safe to say that most of our physical problems have some relationship with spiritual or mental struggle, and Aaron and I explore this with what I think is a very interesting conversation. Today's show is with Alex Effer, owner of Resilient Training and Rehabilitation.  Alex has treated and trained a variety of clients, from professional and amateur athletes, to a wide spectrum of the general population, ranging from those with certain medical conditions, to postoperative rehabilitation and individuals with chronic and complex pain.  Alex has experience as an exercise physiologist, a strength and conditioning coach, and has consulted with a number of elite and Olympic organizations.  Alex has taken a tremendous amount of continuing education courses and is on the leading edge of modern training theory. There are loads of different continuing education courses and theories, each carrying methods to train athletes from perspectives on breathing, corrective exercise, and exercise variations, to name a few.  It is in the process of getting to the core principles that define these many training systems, that we can gain a greater level of wisdom to make better decisions in exercise selection and training organization. For today's podcast, Alex speaks on his continuing education journey, and core principles that many current courses in human performance/assessment and biomechanics tend to have in common.  He speaks on how to dial up, or down, points of contact in a movement to help an athlete achieve better mastery over a skill or core human function. In the second half of the show, Alex gives some analysis and progressions with functional training movements, such as crab walks, and bear crawls, and then talks about how some “meathead” oriented exercises are actually more functional than we give the credit for.  Finally, Alex talks about exercises that either “push an athlete backwards in the chest” or “push them forwards” from the back, and how those ramifications can go into, not ony the way we select exercises, but aso the way that we periodize and organize our training programs. Today's episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster and Lost Empire Herbs.  For 15% off your Lost Empire Herbs order, head to www.lostempireherbs.com/justfly View more podcast episodes at the podcast homepage. Timestamps and Main Points 5:15 – Common trends that Alex found in his educational process, having taken “all the courses” 13:30 – How Alex looks at force vectors in training and movement, and the difference between walking and running when assessing gait and looking at these force vectors 20:15 – Where Alex has gotten most of his information in training when considering PRI versus other educational systems (such as DNS or SFMA) 22:15 – Why it may be a faulty method to try to compare babies to adults in terms of baseline movement patterning 30:00 – How to transition a client from 12 points of contact, to only 2, and how to use the extra points of contact to improve one's movement ability when athletes may struggle with standing motions 44:30 – Assessing crab walks, and explaining (or regressing) why athletes might not be able to lift their hips up while performing the crab walk 51:15 – Why some “fitness/bodybuilding” movement can have athletic movement applications, such as a tricep kickback or arm curl coupled with head turn 56:15 – How athletes doing exercises in a manner that “feels good” often times is an optimal method of them doing that movement, versus whatever the commonly accepted technical model for that exercise might be 1:00:00 – Alex's theory on periodizing training based on early, mid and late stance oriented movements 1:12:15 – Viewing training intervention as either “pulling someone back” or “pushing them forward” “When you take every single course, you kind of get mind-blown by them the first time… and then you hit a client that totally goes against all the algorithms and everything they say, and you have to pivot” “(all the continuing education courses) believe in some sort of respiration and how that affects the body”

In 2019, former bodybuilder Aaron Alexander published his book all about the eponymous method he developed himself: "The Align Method: 5 Movement Principles for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind, and Stress-Proof Life." He thinks our bodies speak more than one language – and depending on how connected you are to its pain and joy, you may not be able to understand what it's telling you. And then how will you know when you're aligned and when you're not? How will you read the signal? Alignment isn't just a yoga buzzword – it means a lot more than that, and it's informed by more than how advanced your practice is. Tune in as we talk about compensatory practices (both Western and not, male and not), the importance of heightened senses to our nervous system, why nutrition means more than diet, the two biggest factors in miscommunication, and so much more.

Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Sit up straight! Posture is incredibly important, but not in the ways you might think. Done well, you can enjoy the benefits of correct posture and movement without adding any additional exercises to your already busy day. From wearing the right shoes and hanging from your arms to doing the dishes the right way, today’s guest shares simple and doable ways to improve your posture and eliminate your pain. I’m joined today by Aaron Alexander, manual therapist, movement coach, author of The Align Method and expert in all things movement and biomechanics. Aaron debunks the myths surrounding posture and back pain and explains the consequences of limiting our body’s natural ability for movement. He offers simple ways that anyone can incorporate better movement into their daily routine that doesn’t require additional exercise or pushing yourself any harder than you do right now. His recommended movement exercises simply require moving your body in the most beneficial ways possible. If you’ve been looking for a solution to your neck or back pain, this conversation is going to shed light on the topic that you may have never considered before.   Key Takeaways: [1:11] Today’s topic is posture — do you really need to sit up straight to save yourself from back pain? [2:08] Aaron Alexander dives into the research that examines the relationship between stress and back pain. [5:38] Aaron shares his initial motivation for building muscle and the chronic pain and anxiety he dealt with as a result of neglecting his integrative health. [7:10] The language we use and the limits effect it can have on the abilities of our bodies. [10:20] The consequences of limiting postural movement and the role that muscle memory unintentionally plays in our reaction to life events. [17:58] There is value in becoming less rigid and more flexible in life when dealing with anxiety, stress, and weight issues. [20:17] Finding internal contentment will increase your satisfaction with life experiences in the external world. [23:34] Ways you can integrate more intentional movement into your everyday life, without doing any additional physical exercise. [29:02] The correlation between foot issues and back pain, and the health disasters that can result from wearing the wrong shoes. [30:41] How long will it take to integrate and benefit from the 5 movement principles listed in Aaron’s book? [34:41] Living in the moment is the ultimate goal of the align method, and Aaron shares his goal of creating a life that includes the more desirable meta-experience. [36:06] How often do you hang from your arms? Aaron highlights the physical benefits of hanging in order to relieve shoulder pain. [41:18] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? I also released a full episode with Aaron today that’s equal parts fun and philosophical, so make sure to check that out too if you haven’t already. We talk more about what you’ll find in the book, in between geeking out about spiritual development and self-care. Both of these episodes were a blast to record and I hope you all enjoy them! P.S. Since recording this Q&A, Aaron released a new tool to help people with self-care and exercise called the Align Band. With Aaron’s instructional videos as a guide, you will immediately have access to self-care practices, mobilizations, exercises, and therapeutic techniques pretty much anywhere that has a door. And you can get 10% off an Align Band by using code “luke10” at alignpodcast.com/alignband.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why Aaron is always squatting Getting more movement on airplanes (without getting on some sort of watch list) Children know so much about their bodies — then we unlearn it Teaching your kids to value their intuition How the shape of our body affects how we think and what we think The role of trauma in how your body moves and sits Psychological surgery How important it is to tap into your inner child The relationship between nutrition and awareness How do we turn our sexuality into a movement practice?   More about this episode.   Connect with Luke on social media to learn how to take your lifestyle to the next level, plus catch exclusive live interviews & events: INSTAGRAM - @lukestorey // https://www.instagram.com/lukestorey/ FACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/MrLukeStorey/ TWITTER - @MrLukeStorey // https://twitter.com/MRLUKESTOREY YOUTUBE - https://www.youtube.com/c/LukeStorey HELP SUPPORT THIS SHOW! There are a lot of people I get along with, but there are few people I align with (pun intended) more than Aaron Alexander, the human body genius who created Align Therapy, an integrated approach to functional movement and self-care that has helped thousands of people out of pain and into health. So, it’s generous to call this an interview — it’s really just a recording of two guys geeking out about all of the things they love: the undervalued nutrient of human connection, the skewed priorities of Western society, spiritual development and spiritual bypassing, Shaolin monks getting hit in the nards as a practice, and how we can all leverage movement for not just fitness but also self-care. And Aaron’s newest tool to help people with self-care and exercise, whether you’re at home or on the go, is the Align Band. With Aaron’s instructional videos as a guide, you will immediately have access to self-care practices, mobilizations, exercises, and therapeutic techniques pretty much anywhere that has a door. This is a great step towards making your life a gym and every movement part of your fitness practice, which can bring us one step closer to the ancestral lifestyle that our bodies were designed for. Aaron is also the host of the Align Podcast and the author of The Align Method: 5 Movement Principles for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind, and Stress-Proof Life. This guy has so much wisdom to share, especially when it comes to optimizing your body and integrating healthy movement into your daily life, and you really can’t go wrong with any of it. You can also get 10% off an Align Band by using code “luke10” at alignpodcast.com/alignband.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Touch + Community = the primary fuel for the human organism The physical and psychological repercussions of not receiving enough human contact as an infant or child Releasing childhood and ancestral trauma to find more coherence between our heart and our head Learning from your human design The human zoo of celebrity The new Ram Dass documentary, Becoming Nobody Not drinking your own Kool-Aid Spiritual bypassing The Shaolin monks who get hit in the dick as a practice (you can watch it here) Making your life a fitness practice The research on our sedentary lifestyles done by James A. Levine Taking advantage of NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) The value of not always having rock-hard, shredded abs Reverse engineering the human organism to get to a place of compassion and love The East Forest x Ram Dass album   More about this episode. Getting enough movement throughout your day isn’t just about keeping your body in peak physical shape. To prove this, Aaron Alexander explains in this episode that postural anchoring can affect your mood and that your wrist strength is a surprising indicator of your cardiovascular health. Aaron also discusses how our artificial environment is contributing to more health problems instead of less, what NEAT is and how you can improve it, and why standing desks won’t solve this problem. If you don’t know Aaron, he’s a premier leader in the movement space and has over 10 years of experience studying movement. He came up with five principles that simplify his extensive research, which he published in a book he co-authored, The Align Method: 5 Movement Principles for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind and Stress-Proof Life. In this episode, Aaron’s sharing some of his best movement principles -- which can easily be weaved into your day -- and why these matter so much. Does an issue at your foot affect your shoulder? You bet it does.If you view the body in an isolated way, then the previous statement won't make sense. It's a global anatomical view that helps shed light on how our body works as a cohesive structure. Everything in the body is connected, and movement occurs through a continual balance of compression and tension, demonstrated excellently through the concept of tensegrity. In this episode, Pete explains tensegrity, how the body is balanced with tension and compression and connected through our fascia. Don't miss the hands-on demonstration that you can do to experience the effects of tension and compression working through the body. Pete also discusses muscle slings, and how vital these cooperative muscle actions are to optimal movement. Movement dysfunction at one aspect of the body will cause overcompensations at the rest of the body limiting potential and development, so training ourselves to observe and correct movement can optimize our efforts and limit setbacks. It's all about efficiency!Check out the show notes page here: https://moretomovement.com/episode3/

Have you ever wondered what your great-great-grandparents would think of the world today - and how we live - if they were transported here via a time machine? Our lives have changed drastically in too many different ways to recount here (and most of these changes are, arguably, pretty great to be honest). But for those of us who study health and human biology, our patterns of physical activity is perhaps among the most glaring. Surveys suggest that the average American spends about 13 hours per day sitting, and it is estimated that they typically get around 4774 steps per day. This stands in stark contrast to the tremendous amount of activity that was likely normal for our hunter-gatherer ancestors many thousands of years ago. Indeed, modern humans are not merely physically inactive relative to their own ancestors, but also compared to other free-ranging non-human mammals. And it is likely that we pay a substantial price in the form of chronic disease. But the impact of our rapidly changing lifestyles probably affects us in other more subtle ways. One interesting manifestation of this is postural stress induced by our interaction with technology, which has been recently exacerbated by the ubiquity of smartphones, tablets, and other smaller digital devices. A series of photos by the photographer Eric Pickersgill draws this effect into sharp relief. In these portraits, people are shown in otherwise mundane settings and events, only the cell phones that were previously clasped in their hands have been carefully edited out. What is striking about these pictures is the hunched posture assumed by virtually all of these individuals. With the smartphones extracted from the scene, it becomes really clear how awkward and unnatural this pose is. And yet so many of us spend much of our days like this. Movement and how we inhabit our bodies is an integral part of the human experience, affecting our health, our performance, and our quality of life. And it goes way beyond just exercise. That brings me to our guest. On this episode of humanOS Radio, Dan speaks with Aaron Alexander. Aaron is a manual therapist and movement coach who has worked with elite athletes, celebrities, and ordinary folks to relieve pain, increase strength, and optimize their movement patterns. Aaron is a unique guy, with remarkable insight into the fundamental role of body posture and body movement in health and performance. The foundation of his message revolves around what he calls physical inhabitance. Physical inhabitance goes beyond activity - it encompasses the way that you sit, stand, walk, breathe, look, touch, listen, communicate, and generally the manner in which you occupy your body at any given moment throughout the day. Aaron has authored a newly released book called The Align Method: 5 Movement Principles for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind and Stress-Proof Life. This book lays out his integrated approach of functional movement and body alignment Becoming aligned isn't just about sitting up straight, or working out in a gym, or getting 10,000 steps per day. The Align Method is built around five basic optimizations that can be effortlessly integrated into your day: -Floor Sitting -Hanging -Hip-Hinging -Walking -Nose Breathing To learn more about the Align Method, and how paying attention to your physical inhabitance can enhance your health and performance, check out the interview!

Celebrity manual therapist and movement coach Aaron Alexander joins us again to teach how posture and body alignment are powerful tools for building strength, achieving peak performance, reducing pain, and approaching the world with a new sense of confidence.    Good posture is about more than standing up straight: It can change your mood, alleviate pain, rid your body of stressful tension, and may be the difference between getting that raise you've wanted and attracting your ideal mate, or not. But in order to reap all those benefits, the body must be properly integrated. Aaron offers a revolutionary approach to body alignment to build strength, reduce pain, and put you on a direct path to peak performance that is both fun and accessible. The Align Method centers on five daily optimizations that can be easily integrated into any workout, mindfulness practice, or daily life activity: Floor Sitting Hanging Hip-Hinging Walking Nose Breathing   A truly aligned life isn't limited to sweating in a gym or stretching in a yoga studio, and Aaron provides the fundamental principles to optimize your physical and mental process in any situation. Blending Eastern philosophy with Western mechanics, The Align Method brilliantly outlines the necessary tools to leverage the power of your own senses and body language to feel more flexible and confident, and details exactly how to reshape your environment for enhanced creativity and longevity. This is the quintessential user's manual to feeling better than you ever thought possible, and looking great while you're at it!   Connect w/ Aaron @alignpodcast Connect w/ Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Listen to Aaron's first interview on episode 174 Get Aaron's new book The Align Method The 2020 EF Coach Mentorship is coming! [10:07] “In the movement world, a lot of people are just looking at techniques….” [10:30] Bringing it all back to letting what the patient/client wants to do/accomplish be the driver for treatment and technique. [13:00] The complexity of movement, and going back to the root of what each muscle was designed to do. [15:20] Motion. Proprioceptor. Muscle. [19:50] The soleus nose driver.
