In Episode #142 of The Shallow End, Jethro's out of the gate with a story of a young woman who took an elderly relative to help him withdraw thousands of dollars from his bank. Just one hitch there – the man didn't appear “to be well.” It kind of went downhill from there. Then Lindsay shares a story about a firefighter who really liked flames. I mean…I REALLY liked Flames. So much so that an arson investigator took over the case, and it wasn't hard for the investigator to figure out who the culprit was. Douse those flames of boredom and listen to this week's episode of "The Shallow End!"! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Money makes the world go round, and that doesn't look likely to change anytime soon. So why do so many of us put our head in the sand when it comes to cash? And how do we get more fluent at the money talk? Our Mick definitely needs a little guidance where budgeting, saving and investing is concerned, so she got on the Zoom with financial literacy expert Wendy Grace. They're chatting fears and anxiety around money, how we can change our relationship with it, when and how to get kids financially savvy, and why Wendy wants more young women to get passionate about pensions. So much of business is about ideas, but what the heck do you even do when you get a great idea? In this episode, not only do we answer this question, but we break down how to determine if your idea is a good or a bad one, the ways to test ideas, what to do when it isn't working for you and how to know when it's time to give up on an idea. These are things that I've gotten really good at over the years I've been in business, and we want to share it all with you here today! California author Grant Faulkner was born and raised in Oskaloosa, Iowa - an experience that helped shape his sensibilities as a writer of stories of heartland America. But it's the 100 word story that has, of late, become his obsession. And there is no limit to what he's been able to achieve in that arena. In this episode we read two flash stories: "The Passenger" and "Cold Hard Cash." https://grantfaulkner.com/Support the show

The complicated relationship that existed between the United States and its Soviet advisory, Joseph Stalin, was one that changed with almost every shift in the global climate of the 1930s and 1940s. From defending the eastern front from Adolf Hitler's advances in World War II to the negotiating table of the Paris Peace Conference, few leaders from history have had a more divisive legacy in our nation's past than Stalin, himself. The dictator that most historians accredit with killing more than 20 million people is the same leader whose forces altered the course of war with his unwavering defense of the Russian city of Stalingrad. By 1947, however, with the ushering in of the Cold War, it was undeniable that Joseph Stalin was the primary communist opponent that the United States government had to concern itself with. Therefore, upon his death in 1953, U.S. foreign policy makers waited with baited breath on who his successor would be and what this would mean for the American people. In this week's episode of Horns of a Dilemma, Mackenzie Eaglen, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, addresses the challenging questions of how to allocate defense spending to meet American strategic interests around the globe. Eaglen discusses the relationship between strategy and budget, as well as how "reality always gets a vote" and often results in a need to spend money in areas that were not projected to be strategic priorities. Eaglen engages in a broad-ranging question and answer session with members of the audience which provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between strategy, politics, defense spending, and capabilities on the ground for the United States and its allies. This discussion was held at the University of Texas, Austin.

We discussed Aubrey's newest book "You just need to lose weight, and 19 other myths about fat people."Merf and I had the absolute honor of interviewing Aubrey Gordon - also known as "Your Fat Friend" and co-host of the wildly popular podcast, "Maintenance Phase."Thank you, Aubrey. We had a blast and hope you did, too.Merf starts off by describing to Aubrey why she loved the style of her new book, "You Just Need to Lose Weight." We loved her writing style, how the chapters were broken down, and the definitions of various words we use in our community, and we REALLY loved the reflective questions Aubrey created. (Not to mention SO MANY citations and research in her book.) It is truly a fat person's RESOURCE GUIDE.We hear a fabulous story about Merf and her boss who asked their executive team (and her work) if anyone has been reading anything that really made them think and Merf suggest Aubrey's new book! I (Chrystal) ask Aubrey how come she did not include the "Fat Girls Give Better Blow Jobs" myth in her book. And that led to a discussion about how we fats get hypersexualized and desexualized at the exact same time. Hyper-fetishized and also meet people who will not be seen with us in the same breath. We got to have a discussion about Aubrey meeting Lindy West recently and we both agreed that Lindy is 100% absolutely without pretense and funny as hell. We discussed the FOREVER question about when and who should we engage with when it comes to "concern trolls" and other anti-fat jerks on the internet or out in the wild. Merf asks Aubrey how the podcast Maintenance Phase and her books have impacted Aburey's personal life. We have a bit of fun discussing ways we would TRULY like to "glorify obesity" if that were actually possible. Would we want free drinks? Free First Class upgrades on airlines. Cutsies in line at Disneyland? Aubrey feels COLD HARD CASH is the way to go with the perks of glorifying obesity. (Hopefully, you can read my sarcasm here. We need a sarcasm FONT!)Aubrey enlightens us about why she prefers the term 'anti-fat' over 'fatphobia.'I ask Aubrey (and Merf) if they have any pithy replies when faced with anti-fatness out in the wild. (People with actually diagnosed phobias already have enough stigma to deal with.) We have a meaningful discussion about HOW WE CAN AFFECT change and not just bitch about the B.M.I.

There is no denying that small towns have a certain charm. The quaint environment they provide is something you just can't get in bigger cities. But know this, every single one also has something weird going on. It might be troll themed. It might have a hyperfixation on a sitcom from the 60s. It might name itself after American tragedies and host an oyster festival despite not being costal. Ok, we made that last one up, but you get the point. Zach brings sherry, Jared gets roasted by his hometown, and Adam truly misunderstands Alf. Talking Points Include: Frasier Vibes, Spin Off Combos, Spooky Re-Edits, Bug Pranks, Not Our Hometown, Mayberry Fest, Making a Weird Town, The Landlocked Oyster Festival, Wolf Flu, Cold Hard Cash
