In this episode, we're diving into a trio of "the"-titled features, starting with our Top 5 Definite Articles in film and TV, followed by a look at Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans, and rounding off with the delightful antics of The Smurfs.Top 5 Definite Articles in Film and TV:The Godfather (1972) - A cinematic masterpiece that redefined the crime genre and gave us one of the most iconic characters in film history, Don Vito Corleone. The Dark Knight (2008) - Christopher Nolan's gritty take on Gotham's hero brought depth, realism, and a legendary performance from Heath Ledger as the Joker. The Office (2005-2013) - A sitcom that revolutionized mockumentary-style comedy and introduced the world to Michael Scott's awkward brilliance. The Thing (1982) - John Carpenter's chilling horror-thriller remains a benchmark for practical effects and paranoia-driven storytelling. The Matrix (1999) - A sci-fi classic that questioned reality and revolutionized action choreography with its "bullet time" visuals.Main Feature: The Fabelmans (2022) Directed by Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical film that reflects on the legendary filmmaker's own life, capturing the wonder, complexity, and challenges of growing up in a family where art and reality often intersect. Gabriel LaBelle stars as Sammy Fabelman, a young boy enchanted by the power of cinema, with Michelle Williams and Paul Dano portraying his loving but imperfect parents.Set in the 1950s and 60s, the film chronicles Sammy's discovery of filmmaking and his growing passion amidst family tensions and personal dilemmas. Spielberg crafts a deeply personal story that explores how art can be an escape, a confrontation, and a way of understanding the world. With a blend of nostalgia and emotional depth, The Fabelmans showcases the director's love for the medium while delving into the challenges of family life. It's a celebration of creativity, dreamers, and the power of storytelling. The Smurfs For the little ones (and the young at heart), The Smurfs bring a mix of charm, humour, and life lessons. Originally created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, the tiny blue characters have enchanted audiences for generations. The 1980s animated series and subsequent films follow Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, and their fellow Smurfs as they navigate the magical forest, often thwarting the evil plans of the bumbling wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael. These pint-sized adventurers deliver plenty of laughs, but the stories often come with underlying messages about cooperation, kindness, and problem-solving. Whether through the classic cartoon or recent movies, The Smurfs remain a colorful and fun escape. This episode dives deep into the importance of the small things—whether it's a single word that gives a title its iconic flair, a passion for filmmaking that shapes a life, or little blue creatures teaching big lessons. Stay tuned for a blend of reflection, nostalgia, andWe love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Author Mark Seal joins Tim to talk with Mark about the subject of his popular new book about the making of The Godfather movie. The book is called, “Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.” Mark has is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair where he's covered scandals, history makers and pop culture icons. This episode was originally released January 10, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/221_-_The_Making_of_The_Godfather_auphonic.mp3 The Godfather was the first of three motion pictures directed by Francis Ford Coppola about the fictional Corleone crime family. The box office hit was released in 1972, and was followed by sequels in 1974 and 1990. The original Godfather film was inspired by the novel of the same name that was written by Mario Puzo and published in 1969. All of the films were distributed by Paramount Pictures and generated roughly $512 million worldwide. The film franchise won nine Academy Awards. This coming March will mark the 50th anniversary of when the Godfather first hit the big screens. The movie centers on Don Vito Corleone and his family. Marlon Brando plays the Don. The Don declines an offer to get into the narcotics business with another crime family, which is led by Virgil Sollozzo. This creates problems. Don Corleone becomes a marked man. Don Corleone's oldest boy is Sonny Corleone. He's played by James Caan. Sonny takes over the crime family while his father recovers. Meanwhile, Sonny's little brother Michael – who is played by Al Pacino – is recruited to exact revenge on Sollozzo. As the gang wars heat up, Michael is sent to Sicily to lay low for a while. That's where he meets his first wife. The violence follows him there when his young bride is killed. Back in New York, Michael's older brother Sonny is killed in an ambush attack. By now, Don Vito Corleone has recovered from the assassination attempt on his life, but he decides to turn over the control of the family business to Michael. There are plots and sub-plots, but through it all, Michael emerges as a force to be reckoned with, and Al Pacino goes from a relative unknown to a Hollywood super star. Mark Seal first wrote about the making of The Godfather years ago in his work for Vanity Fair Magazine. Eventually, that work would lead to his new book entitled, “Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.” Links Mark Seal (website) Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli, by Mark Seal (Barnes & Noble) About this Episode's Guest Mark Seal Veteran author and journalist Mark Seal joined Vanity Fair as a contributing editor in 2003, covering stories as varied as the Bernie Madoff scandal, Ghislaine Maxwell, Tiger Woods, the fall of Olympian Oscar Pistorius, the making of classic films such as Pulp Fiction, and many more. “I had hoped we could all come here and reason together.” - Don Corleone One of my favorite scenes in The Godfather also contains some of the best leadership lessons of the Corleone's… Part of the Corleone Family's incredible power and influence comes from Vito Corleone's ability to be “reasonable.” The Don believes strongly in reason, collaboration and, when possible, cooperation. He is an eminently practical and patient man. The Italian's have a saying: “Patience for a moment, comfort for years.” Nowhere is that more apparent than at the big meeting of the Five Families. The Don arranged this “sit down” between all the warring Mafia families to seek an end to the bloodshed after his eldest son Santino is gunned down at the toll booth. “This war ends now,” the Don tells his Consigliere, Tom Hagen. One of the things to note about this amazing scene in the movie is that it was held at a typical corporate board room. As we see the heads of the Families around that big oak conference table, you realize that it could very well be a board meeting for any big corporation, whether it's a big banking company or traditional fortune 500 company. This setting was intentional - part of Francis Ford Coppola's attempt to make The Godfather movie a metaphor for capitalism in America. Coppola wanted to show that corporate greed was the same as criminal greed - perhaps even more so, because at least the Mafia had a code of loyalty and honor. The scene was shot in the board room of the Penn Central Railroad above Grand Central Station in NYC. The exterior shots were filmed at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Very corporate indeed! Again, Coppola's subtext here is that the Mafia is just another business - like any powerful American corporation. But back to the scene where the five families come together to discuss a truce. Let's watch the scene and observe how Don Vito Corleone calmly and modestly appeals to reason… --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/godfather1/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/godfather1/support

How a Hollywood Has-Been Landed the Role of a Lifetime By the late sixties, the legendary star once considered the greatest actor in the world was an overweight, out of work, washed up has-been. Worse yet, after a string of bad movies and a reputation for being difficult to work with, he was considered "box office poison." No studio in Hollywood would touch him… So when Godfather author Mario Puzo and director Francis Ford Coppola told the studio execs at Paramount that they wanted the once-great 47-year-old Marlon Brando to play The Godfather, the suggestion was met with ridicule. The very mention of Brando's name sent Paramount owner "Hurricane" Charlie Bluhdorn into a fit of rage. Studio head Robert Evans said "anyone but Brando - Marlon is as dead as could be." Another Paramount exec insisted that Brando would tank the movie. "He's washed up, he's finished," they warned Bluhdorn. I n fact, studio president Stanley Jaffe had a meeting with Coppola and stated: "As long as I'm president of the studio, Marlon Brando will not be in this picture, and I will no longer allow you to discuss it." Today, it's hard to imagine anyone but Brando in the role of Don Vito Corleone, but at the time, everyone involved had an opinion about who should play The Godfather… --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/godfather1/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/godfather1/support

REFERENCES Peter BISKIND, Le nouvel Hollywood, Edition Le Cherche Midi, coll. Aile, New York'taki diğer dört aileyle birlikte New York'un yeraltı işlerini yönetmektedir. Bunun üzerine arkasına Tataglia Ailesi'ni ve New York'ta polis şefi olan McClusky'i alan Solozzo, Don Corleone'yi vurdurtur. Ve New York'ta suç aileleri arasındaki savaş başlayacaktır…

Author Mark Seal joins Tim to talk with Mark about the subject of his popular new book about the making of The Godfather movie. The book is called, “Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.” Mark has is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair where he's covered scandals, history makers and pop culture icons. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/The_Making_of_The_Godfather_auphonic.mp3 The Godfather was the first of three motion pictures directed by Francis Ford Coppola about the fictional Corleone crime family. Personal Note: The mic fiasco of 2021 ends with this episode! Praise Chuck because this was the episode I bawled over when it all began. I sincerely had the best time chatting with Joel and loved listening to his stories. I was so glad his audio was perfectly fine, and it was my audio that was messed up. Unfortunately, it just took me forever to edit this podcast so this episode is LONG overdue. In this episode of The Game of Nerds Podcast, we sit down with amazingly talented Joel Gibbs. He is known as the man of 1000 voices. Technically it's 783, but who's counting? Joel has been doing voice acting since the '70s in the Philadelphia area. I was beyond honored that he sat down to chat with me about his career. This man's resume is astounding. He is not only a talented voice actor, but he's also been a director, radio, and podcast host, to name a few. We first talk about what we've been recently obsessing on. Joel jumps right in by talking about all the fun characters he's been getting to do recently. I finally got to watch the new Tom and Jerry movie that at the time was just released on HBO Max. I'm still unimpressed as when I first saw the trailer. Joel talks about how the ventriloquist Paul Winchell, and Hanna-Barbera era cartoons like Tom and Jerry, were really the inspiration behind his love for voice acting. He loved doing the voices of different characters and entertaining people with them. As a child, it started with puppets and eventually moved on to mimicking his teachers' voices for the other kids at school. His first paying job was doing an Ed Sullivan-type voice for a car or shoe commercial. It wasn't until a few years later that he realized voice acting was going to be his career when he mastered Don Vito Corleone, aka The Godfather. While it took him a while to be known as the "go-to guy" for voiceovers on the East Coast, his talent was a huge driving force in his success. His most favorite jobs were head shop commercials in Atlantic City doing the perfect impressions of Cheech and Chong. Joel fondly remembers when he couldn't turn on Atlantic City radio without hearing his voice on the radio multiple times in a row. With over 40K projects done in his career, he has no regrets on any of his projects. The only hard part he's run into is clients not knowing what they want. Thus, it's hard to get the right recording. He does offer some great advice for those interested in getting into voice actors if you have talent and passion. While there are a wide variety of different courses now available on voice acting due to the pandemic, Joel does suggest going to programs with actual successful professionals like Nancy Cartwright. She is known worldwide for being the voice of Bart Simpson and other beloved animated characters. Ultimately though, it does come down to talent and practicing that talent. Once you've nailed doing the voices, you need to build your own recording spot. The remote home office was common for voice actors before the pandemic even started. Most companies won't pay for an actor to travel to record, so the home recording is the way to go. As with most cases, if you want to play with the professionals, you have to have equipment like the professionals like microphone and software. Recording equipment isn't cheap, but the price can affect your sound quality in some cases. Case and point, Mic Fiasco of 2021. We saw this also with SDCC 2020 with the Bob's Burgers panel, where they talked about making home recording studios with egg crates in their children's closets. Joel has no complaints about the job, though, and even states he really doesn't see any cons to the career either. On top of being a talented voice actor, he's also a great host for podcasts and radio programs. I asked him, "Which is easier, doing interviews with celebrities or doing voiceovers?" He says they are very different but allow him to express himself in the same way. He's gotten to have some amazing conversations ...

But without the book, we can’t never have chance to watch this masterpiece. Mario Puzo had done a great job when he told a story of the world of mafia and put the value of family on a new level. So in this episode, I will spend time talking about the book especially the main characters. Don Vito Corleone and Michael Corleone as well as the values and the lessons that this book had impacts on me. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Join me and my two friends Stephanie Hillbrand and Trisa McBride, who share the same birthday as me, as we open our presents and talk about plenty of forbidden things. Everything from gift giving, toys, movies and the rules of friendship which Stephanie just blows out of the water. But first, I need to address the elephant in the room. Yes, the picture I chose to post with this story. First, let me just say it was Stephanie who insisted we have all of those candles on the cake. Second, I'd like to add they were burning fast and there were a lot of them. So, like any smart birthday woman who wants her birthday wish to come true, I blew full boar to make sure not one single candle was left standing. Little did I know, the other two were only puckering up for the shot. Now you understand why my cheeks look like their stuffed with marshmallows - ready to play the part of Don Vito Corleone after a bad reaction to the fish dinner. The other thing I'd like to address is I was mortified when I first saw the picture. I mean, who wouldn't be? I vowed to myself to destroy the picture forever. But then a voice from beyond whispered, such action would not be in line with the spirit of this podcast. After all, the ugly picture is always and most definitely forbidden - right? So here I am, embracing the forbidden and regardless of the outcome I have to say - it feels liberating to smile in the face of the forbidden. Departures

On today’s episode Nick and Michael be discussing Fracis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece of cinema… THE GODFATHER Directed by Fracis Ford Coppola from a screenplay written by Mario Puzo and Coppola based on a novel by the same name written by Mario Puzo. The Godfather tells the story of the Corleone crime family during a ten year period from 1945 to 1955. Don Vito Corleone is the aging patriarch of the family and we follow his quick fall from grace after an attempted hit on his life from a young drug pusher named Sollozzo. While down for the count, Vito’s son Sonny takes over the business for his father as they plot revenge on the men involved with the failed assassination on his father. While this is happening, a war breaks out amongst the crime families, and Vito’s youngest son, Michael, reluctantly becomes involved in the family business. Coppola’s film is heralded as one of the great films of all time and was officially selected to be preserved in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1990 for being “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant". The saga of Islamic civilization is in many ways a universal story of good versus evil, the cycle of life, and the foibles of human nature. It isn’t too big a stretch to connect that saga to some of the great stories and classic movies Americans know and love. That’s the premise of this two-episode documentary, co-produced with Public Radio International’s Afropop Worldwide. With the help of Don Vito Corleone, R2D2, and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, it tells the story of two slave rebellions that transformed the history of the Middle East and North Africa and crystallized the Sunni-Shi’ite divide in Islam. Along the way, there's a soundtrack of enchanting medieval Arabic music. Co-narrating the documentary with Joseph Braude is Georges Collinet, the legendary broadcaster from Cameroon whose voice is ubiquitous on the airwaves of Africa. Enjoy!
