The judge says that normal police procedure is within the common knowledge of laypersons? The third party culprit defense has been winnowed down to two potential culprits. Dan and Ellen talk with Mike Beaudet, longtime investigative reporter for WCVB-TV and a multimedia professor at Northeastern's school of journalism. Mike has won many awards for his hard-hitting investigations and leads a project aimed at reinventing television news. On March 21 - 22, he'll lead a conference at Northeastern called "Reinvent: A Video Innovation Summit."  Mike's students are producing content for everything from Instagram, YouTube to TikTok. Dan has a Quick Take about the National Trust for Local News. Co-founder Elizabeth Hansen Shapiro exited the nonprofit suddenly last month. That came amid reports that the Portland Press Herald and other papers that the Trust owns in the state of Maine might soon announce budget cuts. Now comes more bad news. Colorado Community Media, a group of 24 weekly and monthly papers in the Denver suburbs, is closing two papers and is losing money. Those papers were the National Trust's first acquisition. The Trust's mission was to buy papers that were in danger of falling into the clutches of corporate chain ownership. It's a worthy goal, but the Trust has obviously hit some significant obstacles. Ellen has a Quick Take on the fact that Harvard University is shutting down Harvard Public Health, the digital home to stellar longform journalism about public health. At a time when the very facts of science are challenged on social media every day, this is disheartening news.

Bombshells were dropped in the last hearing from the promised "Touhy" information, supplied by the DOJ. Some of the information revealed; Three FBI accident reconstructionists  have reported that Karen Read's vehicle did not strike John O'Keefe and John was not killed by a vehicle strike.  BOOM! Why is Karen Read still under indictment and how did the taillight fragments get to the crime scene, if there was NO vehicle strike???The FBI also confirmed (Introduced by the defense) that the infamous google search by Jen Mcabe 2:27am ("how long to die in the cold") did occur. It was also revealed the District Attorney Morrisey allowed Brian Higgins and Brian Albert to DESTROY their cell phone, despite a court order to retain all electronic devices. The FBI also revealed that Higgins and B.Albert had a conversation on the destroyed phones just prior to the "how long to die in the cold" google search, despite saying in police reports that they were asleep by that time. Finally, the  defense revealed that homicide investigator Michael Proctor admitted to his substantial friendship with the Alberts during his testimony before the federal grand jury, investigating police corruption.A text message from Micheal Proctor's sister to Investigator Proctor revealed that his sister ran into Julie Albert, where she stated a desire to give Micheal Proctor "a gift, when this is all over" Trooper Proctor replied "give it to my wife". This was clearly a bribe to keep the Alberts out of the jackpot in this case. Why is Karen Read still under indictment?WCVB TV-https://bit.ly/3TpozXZBoston.com-https://bit.ly/3x6CzOB

Dan and Ellen talk with Emily Rooney, the longtime host of the award-winning show on WGBH-TV, "Beat The Press." Dan was a panelist on "Beat the Press," which had a 22-year run but was canceled in 2021 by GBH. The show, which is much missed by many former viewers, had a brief second life as a podcast. Emily has got serious television news cred. She arrived at WGBH from the Fox Network in New York, where she oversaw political coverage, including the 1996 presidential primaries, national conventions, and presidential election. Before that, she was executive producer of ABC's "World News Tonight" with Peter Jennings. She also worked at WCVB-TV in Boston for 15 years, from 1979–'93, as news director and as assistant news director. There's a revival of interest in responsible media criticism. Boston Globe columnist Kimberly Atkins Stohr recently wrote an op-ed calling for the restoration of a public editor position at The New York Times, The Globe and other news outlets.  Dan has an update on one of our favorite topics — pink slime. Wired magazine has a wild story out of rural Iowa involving a Linux server in Germany, a Polish website and a Chinese operation called “the Propaganda Department of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.” Ellen recounts a legal saga in Southeastern Minnesota involving the sale of a newspaper group and allegations of intellectual property theft. It's all about a single used computer and its role in creating a media startup.

In part because there are over 10,000 known human diseases and symptoms thereof may have numerous possible explanations, frequently diagnostic tests can be in-determinative or less informative than observing (termed: watchful waiting) a suspected disease's clinical course over time.  Because of diagnostic complexities population level diagnostic errors represent a significant public health problem.  Nevertheless, despite the progress made in treating cancer - as Ropeik writes in his introduction two-thirds of nearly 200 types of cancer are either treatable as chronic diseases or entirely curable - cancer today remains the emperor of nosophobias that in turn leads to over-screening, over diagnosis and false positives, over treatment, potentially harmful side effects, death and excessive healthcare budgeting and wasteful spending.  As one reviewer of the book wrote, “Ropeik details how the gravity force of cancerphobia warps risk perception, leading to personal and societal harms and legislative misdirection.”  During this interview Mr. Ropeik begins by clarifying the book's discussion is at the population level, disputes the belief cancer always needs be diagnosed as soon as possible and describes the US Preventive Services Taskforce's (USPSFT's) work upon which his book is based. He next discusses USPSTF's (evolving) mammography screening recommendations for breast cancer, the prevalence of associated false positive diagnoses particularly related to DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). He discusses his chapter regarding environmental agents as cancer agents or contributing to the fear of cancer, the lack of a relationship between federal funding and the burden of disease, e.g., breast v pancreatic cancer funding. He concludes by discussing policy solutions that can simultaneously reduce cancer phobia and improve the effectiveness and cost cancer care. Mr. David P. Ropeik is a retired Harvard University Instructor, author, and international consultant on risk perception, risk communication, and risk management. He worked as a television reporter for WCVB-TV in Boston from 1978 – 2000 specializing on environment and science issues, wrote a science column for The Boston Globe, taught journalism at Boston University, Tufts University, and MIT, was a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Environmental Journalists. Mr. Ropeik previously published “How Risky Is It, Really? Why Our Fears Don't Always Match the Facts,” (2010, McGraw Hill), and co-author of “RISK, A Practical Guide for Deciding What's Really Safe and What's Really Dangerous in the World Around You,” (2002, Houghton Mifflin). Mr. Ropeik has also authored more than 50 articles, book chapters, and other essays on risk perception and risk communication published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Scientific American, The Atlantic Monthly, Health Affairs, Issues in Science and Technology and elsewhere. He writes a blog for Psychology Today and blogged at Big Think and The Huffington Post. Among numerous awards Mr. Ropeik is a two time winner of the DuPont-Columbia Award and seven regional EMMY awards. She grew up in a family that was very involved in music, performing in her church choir and with her family in front of their congregation. Liz attended Lawrence University's Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, became a high school music teacher, and sang semi-professionally for a time. After a few years of teaching, Liz felt there was something else she was supposed to do. A former high school lacrosse coach, 44, was arrested for allegedly using photo editing software to place the faces of minors on pornographic images of youngsters. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children apparently tipped off the Massachusetts State Police, who began monitoring Ryan Cook's residence and online activity after receiving a report from WCVB-TV. Multiple photographs of alleged child pornography were allegedly discovered in his possession. According to reports, police conducted a search warrant at Cook's residence on August 30 and took electronic devices as evidence. There was a claim that the youngsters depicted in the photos were between the ages of five and eleven. According to state police, as quoted by WCVB: "In some of these photographs, the children were positioned in a sexual suggestive way and/or were being sexually attacked." Photoshopped images of women superimposed over child pornography were also purportedly discovered by investigators. Two girls from his neighborhood were allegedly depicted in the manipulated images, according to WCVB. Allegedly, Cook was detained and accused with having pornographic images of minors on his person. It was reported by Mass Live that he was released after posting bail in the amount of $10,000. However, the prosecution has asked that $100,000 be established as bail for Cook. According to reports, Cook volunteered his time to instruct lacrosse at Wellesley High School for boys. According to a statement obtained by WCVB, the school system acknowledged that "Wellesley Public Schools is aware that a Wellesley resident, who had previously served as a volunteer with our WHS Boy's Lacrosse team, has been charged with possession of child pornography by the Massachusetts State Police." In court, you can expect to see Cook on September 30. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts! What could be harder than looking for a needle in a haystack? Probably retrieving a ring from a river. But against all odds, divers with the Cambridge Fire Department managed to fish a Chicago woman's diamond ring from the Charles River after it tumbled into the water while she and her husband were relaxing at a yacht club. Lynn Andrews told WCVB-TV she had removed the ring so she could apply sunscreen and placed it in her husband's shirt pocket for safekeeping. But it was a hot day, and when he took off his shirt to cool off with a quick swim, the ring fell in the river. "I said a bad word, and then I took a deep breath, and then I said, ‘Everything's going to be fine,'” her husband, Ninos Andrews, told WBZ-TV. Andrews “was obviously quite distraught,” the fire department said on its Facebook page. The couple alerted a dive team that was patrolling the river, and within five minutes of searching, firefighter Jeremy Marrache located the ring and returned it to its “very relieved and excited” owner, the department said in its post. “They all had wives, and they all knew how important this was and how sentimental it was to us,” Lynn Andrews said. Fortunately, Marrache said, the ring lay at an angle that caused the diamond to shimmer as he shined his flashlight over the silty bottom of the river. “We have open communications via our mask. So when I said I found it, the person attending us relayed that message, so I could hear everybody cheering,” he told WBZ. “This is an amazing example of using our training for public service and a terrific opportunity for the dive team and marine unit members to practice working together,” fire Lt. Stephen Capuccio said in a statement. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

In 2019, foundations contributed $75 billion to the philanthropic ecosystem, making them a crucial player in affecting positive change. How they talk about their work is therefore incredibly important. In this episode of Messaging on a Mission, we talk about the challenges and opportunities foundations have for their messaging strategies.    Key Takeaways: A lack of focus is one of the most significant challenges foundations face It's more than just writing checks. The best foundations are also partners with their beneficiaries  The most significant mistake foundations make in their messaging is over-thinking the stories they have to tell.  What's well known to the foundation may not be well-known to the rest of the world, which is why they may have more stories to tell than they realize.  For your message to resonate, it is best to present in the context of existing conversations if possible, e.g., the pandemic, the political landscape, or racial equality.  Non-profits should craft Foundation-specific messages when looking for partnerships.    Episode Guest(s): Matt Wilder is a communications and media strategist with a passion for telling great stories. With deep roots in the education, government, and non-profit sectors, Matt has crafted and executed communications plans that educated and inspired stakeholders and also moved constituencies to rewrite the narrative, challenge the status quo and move forward together.   Notably, Matt recently led the communications efforts for the historic ‘Yes on 3' campaign, which successfully upheld the Massachusetts law protecting transgender people from discrimination in public places, the first-ever statewide vote on transgender rights in United States history.   Before creating his consultancy, Matt served as chief of staff and communications director to the Massachusetts secretary of education in the administration of Governor Deval Patrick. Before state service, Matt served in the administration of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino as the chief spokesperson for the Boston Public Schools and as an advisor to Superintendent Carol Johnson.    Prior to his public service, Matt was a television news producer at Boston's acclaimed ABC affiliate, WCVB-TV, Channel 5. When Clint Conley hung up his bass guitar after Mission of Burma’s initial run in 1983, he didn’t look back at music for over a decade. Trying his hand at manual labor before quickly deciding that it wasn’t for him, he went back to school to study broadcast journalism. As a thirty-something in a new field, he found his way in his new career, becoming a senior field producer at Chronicle, a popular news program at WCVB-TV in Boston, where he has been for over thirty years. In our conversation, we talk about his career path after music, and how music slowly crept back in, thanks to the ‘mania’ that comes with creativity, leading to some intense balancing of two bands, a family and a career, as Mission of Burma became more acclaimed than they had ever been. Clint is smart, funny and totally transparent about his life and career, and his story offers great tips for any musician looking to embark upon a new path. Kent Ian Paterson a producer at KUNM-FM in Albuquerque, New Mexico talks to Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about her early years as a Progressive Rock DJ that kicked off her broadcasting career. Paterson contacted Robinson in August about a history he was compiling at KUNM to celebrate the station’s 54th anniversary. Once it was confirmed she was the same person that worked at KUNM back in the early 1970s the conversations began. When asked how she originally came to the University of New Mexico in 1969 and became involved with KUNM Robinson stated, “I went to UNM because they listed available courses in Radio & TV but when I got there I found out that those classes wouldn’t be offered for a few years. So I answered an ad on KUNM-FM looking for 'chicks to sharpen pencils'. When I applied they suggested I get my FCC license so I did. When I returned with my license they gave me a weekly shift on Thursdays from 1A to 3A. At the time UNM women had a 12 Midnight curfew and men did not. So the ACLU got involved and the curfew was lifted. I guess that was my first experience in the fight for equality.” It was the beginning of the Women’s Movement who adopted Charlotte as a role model because of the ACLU curfew resolve. Paterson added, “You and the other women who were at KUNM 50 years ago were trailblazers. Women became much more prominent at KUNM after the mid 1970s. The station's first female manager served from 1974 to 1976.” We then talked about how Robinson’s KUNM experience led her to her stellar career in broadcasting breaking the glass ceiling for women at WCVB-TV in Boston and then on to ABC, NBC and CBS TV Networks in New York, NY.  Charlotte Robinson launched OUTTAKE MEDIA LLC in 2007 and OUTTAKE VOICES™ in 2008 with over 500 podcast episodes that include Alan Ball, Ricky Martin, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Rep Barney Frank, Kyra Sedgwick, Kathleen Turner, John Waters, Dustin Lance Black, Tab Hunter, Sharon Gless, Loni Anderson and comedian Margaret Cho to name a few. Ms. Robinson was honored by the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition with the 2018-2019 MBCC Appreciation Award for providing a voice for hundreds of LGBTQ+ organizations and allies including MBCC. Currently Charlotte has partnered with Nicole Conn Films Global and serves on the Board of Women in Film and Video New England. The state of the art homepage is divided into three categories. First there is a widescreen video player that showcases original programming. Since this is the 15th anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts the first showcase highlighted is Charlotte’s short film OUTTAKE that chronicles the historic events that took place in 2004. The film was shot by Kirsten Martin and narrated by Arline Isaacson Co Chair of the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus. The next category is “WE LOVE” and features organizations and companies that have been very supportive of our LGBTQ community. All content on OUTTAKE MEDIA™ will be updated on a regular basis. We talked to Charlotte about her inspiration for creating this fabulous new media concept and how she designed it in a way that it will take on a life of its own. Charlotte Robinson’s broadcast career spans over decades. She was the first woman audio engineer at WCVB-TV in Boston and then worked at ABC New York and NBC New York until she joined CBS New York where she was on staff for 5 years. She worked on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather and then joined CBS Sports where she earned an Emmy Award for NFL Today. She left CBS in the mid eighties to live authentically and pursue her producing ambitions. OUTTAKE MEDIA™ is fed first hand news and content by organizations and publicists receiving about 100 requests a day. Since 2007 it has built a huge global audience with millions of viewers. In these difficult political times Charlotte always understood that the media is extremely powerful. Unfortunately it has somewhat backfired by electing Trump and she hopes that OUTTAKE MEDIA™ continues providing some sanity for people living in an insane world. Martha Raddatz is co-anchor of “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” and ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent. She has covered all aspects of foreign policy for nearly 20 years – reporting from the Pentagon, the State Department, the White House, and from conflict zones around the world. Prior to her current role she served as White House correspondent during the last term of President George W. Bush's administration. She has reported from a range of locations throughout the world from Haiti and Yemen to the Mideast and through south Asia. Raddatz has traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan dozens of times, and to Iraq 21 times to cover the conflicts there. She was on the last convoy out of Iraq and is the only television reporter allowed to cover a combat mission over Afghanistan in an F15 fighter jet, spending nearly 10 hours in the air on two separate missions. In the early hours of June 8, 2006, she was the first correspondent to report that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, had been killed in a U.S. air strike north of Baghdad. In 2011 she reported exclusive details on the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. That same year she had an exclusive interview on the USS Kearsage off the coast of Libya with the Marines who helped rescue two American pilots who had gone down in Libya. In 2012, Raddatz was on a USS destroyer as it made its way through the Strait of Hormuz. In October 2012, Raddatz moderated the only Vice Presidential debate between Congressman Paul Ryan and Vice President Joe Biden, which covered both domestic and foreign topics. Post-debate Raddatz received an outpouring of praise for asking pointed questions on a range of issues while asserting control over the conversation. Raddatz joined ABC News in January, 1999 as the network's State Department correspondent. There she covered the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, as well as traveled to Africa, Pakistan and India with then U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. Her coverage at the State Department after the attacks of September 11 was recognized, along with that of other ABC News recipients, with a Peabody Award as well as an Emmy Award. In May of 2004, Raddatz was named Senior National Security correspondent. During her time at the Pentagon, she reported exclusively on a number of stories, including the near capture of al-Zarqawi in April 2005, plus the discovery of his laptop computer. From 1993-1998 Raddatz was the Pentagon correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR), where she reported on foreign policy, defense and intelligence issues. During her tenure at NPR, she made numerous trips to Eastern Europe to cover the war in Bosnia. Prior to joining NPR in 1993, she was the chief correspondent at the ABC News Boston affiliate WCVB-TV. In addition to covering several Presidential campaigns, she reported from the former Soviet Union, Africa, the Middle East, the Philippines and Europe. In 2012 Raddatz received the First Amendment Award from the Radio Television Digital News Foundation (RTDNF) for excellence in journalism as well as the prestigious Fred Friendly First Amendment Award. She received four Emmy Awards, including an Emmy for being on the team covering the inauguration of Barack Obama. She was also the recipient the 2007 International Urbino Press Award, the 2005 Daniel Pearl Award from the Chicago Journalists Association, and a 1996 Overseas Press Club Award for her live coverage of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. In 2007 the White House Correspondents' Association awarded her the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellence in Presidential news coverage under deadline pressure. Her reporting was also recognized with the National Headliner Award for team coverage of the 1988 Presidential campaign. There are no shortage of startup accelerators, innovation spaces and startup community hubs, and sometimes it can be difficult to put your finger on what makes one a success and another a failure. Today, Tim Rowe the CEO of the Cambridge Innovation Center walks us through what he believes will make or break a startup community. The CIC started as a small co-working space for a handful of startups, and now is the biggest facility of its kind on the world. They’ve expanded to several locations and are now int he process of setting up their Tokyo facility. Tim lived in Japan for a few years in the 1990’s and he understands that Japan is different, and that’s a good thing. It’s an interesting interview and I think you’ll enjoy it. Show Notes for Startups What makes one startup space succeed and others fail When you need to turn down the money to support the  mission How NGOs and governments can sponsor innovation A blueprint for a successful innovation space What approaches to innovation might be particularly effective in Japan What three things all innovation communities need to succeed What Japanese universities can do to foster innovation Links from the Founder The Cambridge Innovation Center Follow Tim on twitter @rowe WCVB-TV's video on Kendall Square and CIC [shareaholic app="share_buttons" id="7994466"] Leave a comment Transcript from Japan Welcome to Disrupting Japan- straight talk from the CEO’s breaking into Japan. You know, I’ve always been a bit skeptical about co-working spaces, innovation centers, and startup community hubs. Some of them are well intended, but too often, the organizations that put these facilities together have a bit of a field of dreams mindset, where, if they just build the office space, the innovative entrepreneurs will come, and then the organizers will find themselves at the center of a thriving ecosystem. Sometimes that actually happens, but usually not. But when it works, when all the pieces really do come together, amazing things happen. And a community develops that is far greater than the sum of its parts. So what’s the real difference between the innovation spaces that flourish compared to those that stagnate? Well, today we get a chance to sit down and talk to Tim Rowe, CEO of Cambridge Innovation Center, or CIC, the largest innovation center in the world. And we have a conversation about what’s really involved in building an entrepreneurial community, and the CIC's progress on building a very large-scale innovation center right here in Tokyo. It’s a truly insightful conversation, so let’s hear from our sponsors and get right to our interview.     [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1411"  info_text="Sponsored by"  font_color="grey"  ] [Interview] Romero: So I’m sitting here with Tim Rowe, CEO of the Cambridge Innovation Center. This is a pretty incredible space that you have been running for 15 years now. So rather than having me explain it, can you tell us a bit about what CIC is and how it came to be? Rowe: Sure. CIC is the world’s largest space for startups, that is our Cambridge Space, specifically. We’re also in Boston, Miami, St. Louis, Rotterdam Netherlands, at the moment and we’ve got some more in the works. We call ourselves a community of startups. So we’re not an accelerator where we’re telling people how to build their business or investing in them. We have brought 15 venture capital funds into our location in Cambridge and some of our other locations, so there is access to money, but it’s more of an open platform. Romero: So the VCs actually have offices there? Rowe: Their entire firm is there. Romero: In terms of business, though, it’s a real estate business. You’re renting office space. You don’t make money by making investments or… Rowe: Yea. So we don’t think about it that way. You could argue that a university is mostly made up of real estate, but that’s not its purpose.
