Four Strings and the Truth
Certain Fate Foretold with Clint Conley (Mission of Burma, consonant)

Four Strings and the Truth

Not exactly nine lives, but the quintessentially Boston band Mission of Burma has had at least two: their initial 1979-1983 foray, which yielded such classics as “That's When I Reach For My Revolver,” “Academy Fight Song” and “That's When I Escaped My Certain Fate”; and an unlikely reunion in the early 2000s, yielding some equally influential albums as well as as a definitive bio-pic, “Not a Photograph: The Mission of Burma Story” in 2006. Through it all, bassist, vocalist and songwriter Clint Conley has persisted, holding the same media gig for over 35 years (!) and raising a family in the wooded environs outside of Boston. Tune in to hear how this sage bassist and song architect found his sound, and continues to hew to the minimalist stylings of spindly bass lines in outings with the Chris Brokaw Rock Band, among others. ALSO! You have until 7/31/25 to enter to win a “like new” (seriously, I played it once) IdiotBox Effects Blower Box Deluxe pedal (video review here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt6URsuLhD4). This is an amazing, bass-specific distortion pedal, with clean signal blend and a low-pass filter - so it will stick out nicely in live settings. It will arrive in its original box with 3M Dual Lock strips on the back, so it's ready for your pedal board.  To enter the contest, please send a screenshot of you recommending one episode of this podcast - your favorite interview - in a publicly viewable place - it can be Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or any social media outlet. Send the screenshot to: fourstringspod@gmail.com, and we'll pick one winner at random on 7/31/25. Please note that previous winners of one of our contests are not eligible for this one. We thank the entrants so far - who hail from around the globe - and encourage you to shoot your shot as well. Dan and Ellen talk with Mike Beaudet, longtime investigative reporter for WCVB-TV and a multimedia professor at Northeastern's school of journalism. Mike has won many awards for his hard-hitting investigations and leads a project aimed at reinventing television news. On March 21 - 22, he'll lead a conference at Northeastern called "Reinvent: A Video Innovation Summit."  Mike's students are producing content for everything from Instagram, YouTube to TikTok. Dan has a Quick Take about the National Trust for Local News. Co-founder Elizabeth Hansen Shapiro exited the nonprofit suddenly last month. That came amid reports that the Portland Press Herald and other papers that the Trust owns in the state of Maine might soon announce budget cuts. Now comes more bad news. Colorado Community Media, a group of 24 weekly and monthly papers in the Denver suburbs, is closing two papers and is losing money. Those papers were the National Trust's first acquisition. The Trust's mission was to buy papers that were in danger of falling into the clutches of corporate chain ownership. It's a worthy goal, but the Trust has obviously hit some significant obstacles. Ellen has a Quick Take on the fact that Harvard University is shutting down Harvard Public Health, the digital home to stellar longform journalism about public health. At a time when the very facts of science are challenged on social media every day, this is disheartening news.

Bombshells were dropped in the last hearing from the promised "Touhy" information, supplied by the DOJ. Some of the information revealed; Three FBI accident reconstructionists  have reported that Karen Read's vehicle did not strike John O'Keefe and John was not killed by a vehicle strike.  BOOM! Why is Karen Read still under indictment and how did the taillight fragments get to the crime scene, if there was NO vehicle strike???The FBI also confirmed (Introduced by the defense) that the infamous google search by Jen Mcabe 2:27am ("how long to die in the cold") did occur. It was also revealed the District Attorney Morrisey allowed Brian Higgins and Brian Albert to DESTROY their cell phone, despite a court order to retain all electronic devices. The FBI also revealed that Higgins and B.Albert had a conversation on the destroyed phones just prior to the "how long to die in the cold" google search, despite saying in police reports that they were asleep by that time. Finally, the  defense revealed that homicide investigator Michael Proctor admitted to his substantial friendship with the Alberts during his testimony before the federal grand jury, investigating police corruption.A text message from Micheal Proctor's sister to Investigator Proctor revealed that his sister ran into Julie Albert, where she stated a desire to give Micheal Proctor "a gift, when this is all over" Trooper Proctor replied "give it to my wife". This was clearly a bribe to keep the Alberts out of the jackpot in this case. Why is Karen Read still under indictment?WCVB TV-https://bit.ly/3TpozXZBoston.com-https://bit.ly/3x6CzOB

Dan and Ellen talk with Emily Rooney, the longtime host of the award-winning show on WGBH-TV, "Beat The Press." Dan was a panelist on "Beat the Press," which had a 22-year run but was canceled in 2021 by GBH. The show, which is much missed by many former viewers, had a brief second life as a podcast. Emily has got serious television news cred. She arrived at WGBH from the Fox Network in New York, where she oversaw political coverage, including the 1996 presidential primaries, national conventions, and presidential election. Before that, she was executive producer of ABC's "World News Tonight" with Peter Jennings. She also worked at WCVB-TV in Boston for 15 years, from 1979–'93, as news director and as assistant news director. There's a revival of interest in responsible media criticism. Boston Globe columnist Kimberly Atkins Stohr recently wrote an op-ed calling for the restoration of a public editor position at The New York Times, The Globe and other news outlets.  Dan has an update on one of our favorite topics — pink slime. Wired magazine has a wild story out of rural Iowa involving a Linux server in Germany, a Polish website and a Chinese operation called “the Propaganda Department of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.” Ellen recounts a legal saga in Southeastern Minnesota involving the sale of a newspaper group and allegations of intellectual property theft. It's all about a single used computer and its role in creating a media startup.

In part because there are over 10,000 known human diseases and symptoms thereof may have numerous possible explanations, frequently diagnostic tests can be in-determinative or less informative than observing (termed: watchful waiting) a suspected disease's clinical course over time.  Because of diagnostic complexities population level diagnostic errors represent a significant public health problem.  Nevertheless, despite the progress made in treating cancer - as Ropeik writes in his introduction two-thirds of nearly 200 types of cancer are either treatable as chronic diseases or entirely curable - cancer today remains the emperor of nosophobias that in turn leads to over-screening, over diagnosis and false positives, over treatment, potentially harmful side effects, death and excessive healthcare budgeting and wasteful spending.  As one reviewer of the book wrote, “Ropeik details how the gravity force of cancerphobia warps risk perception, leading to personal and societal harms and legislative misdirection.”  During this interview Mr. Ropeik begins by clarifying the book's discussion is at the population level, disputes the belief cancer always needs be diagnosed as soon as possible and describes the US Preventive Services Taskforce's (USPSFT's) work upon which his book is based. He next discusses USPSTF's (evolving) mammography screening recommendations for breast cancer, the prevalence of associated false positive diagnoses particularly related to DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). He discusses his chapter regarding environmental agents as cancer agents or contributing to the fear of cancer, the lack of a relationship between federal funding and the burden of disease, e.g., breast v pancreatic cancer funding. He concludes by discussing policy solutions that can simultaneously reduce cancer phobia and improve the effectiveness and cost cancer care. Mr. David P. Ropeik is a retired Harvard University Instructor, author, and international consultant on risk perception, risk communication, and risk management. He worked as a television reporter for WCVB-TV in Boston from 1978 – 2000 specializing on environment and science issues, wrote a science column for The Boston Globe, taught journalism at Boston University, Tufts University, and MIT, was a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Environmental Journalists. Mr. Ropeik previously published “How Risky Is It, Really? Why Our Fears Don't Always Match the Facts,” (2010, McGraw Hill), and co-author of “RISK, A Practical Guide for Deciding What's Really Safe and What's Really Dangerous in the World Around You,” (2002, Houghton Mifflin). Mr. Ropeik has also authored more than 50 articles, book chapters, and other essays on risk perception and risk communication published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Scientific American, The Atlantic Monthly, Health Affairs, Issues in Science and Technology and elsewhere. He writes a blog for Psychology Today and blogged at Big Think and The Huffington Post. Among numerous awards Mr. Ropeik is a two time winner of the DuPont-Columbia Award and seven regional EMMY awards. A former high school lacrosse coach, 44, was arrested for allegedly using photo editing software to place the faces of minors on pornographic images of youngsters. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children apparently tipped off the Massachusetts State Police, who began monitoring Ryan Cook's residence and online activity after receiving a report from WCVB-TV. Multiple photographs of alleged child pornography were allegedly discovered in his possession. According to reports, police conducted a search warrant at Cook's residence on August 30 and took electronic devices as evidence. There was a claim that the youngsters depicted in the photos were between the ages of five and eleven. According to state police, as quoted by WCVB: "In some of these photographs, the children were positioned in a sexual suggestive way and/or were being sexually attacked." Photoshopped images of women superimposed over child pornography were also purportedly discovered by investigators. Two girls from his neighborhood were allegedly depicted in the manipulated images, according to WCVB. Allegedly, Cook was detained and accused with having pornographic images of minors on his person. It was reported by Mass Live that he was released after posting bail in the amount of $10,000. However, the prosecution has asked that $100,000 be established as bail for Cook. According to reports, Cook volunteered his time to instruct lacrosse at Wellesley High School for boys. According to a statement obtained by WCVB, the school system acknowledged that "Wellesley Public Schools is aware that a Wellesley resident, who had previously served as a volunteer with our WHS Boy's Lacrosse team, has been charged with possession of child pornography by the Massachusetts State Police." In court, you can expect to see Cook on September 30. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts! Dunkin’ diamond: Dive team retrieves ring from Boston river

What could be harder than looking for a needle in a haystack? Probably retrieving a ring from a river. But against all odds, divers with the Cambridge Fire Department managed to fish a Chicago woman's diamond ring from the Charles River after it tumbled into the water while she and her husband were relaxing at a yacht club. Lynn Andrews told WCVB-TV she had removed the ring so she could apply sunscreen and placed it in her husband's shirt pocket for safekeeping. But it was a hot day, and when he took off his shirt to cool off with a quick swim, the ring fell in the river. "I said a bad word, and then I took a deep breath, and then I said, ‘Everything's going to be fine,'” her husband, Ninos Andrews, told WBZ-TV. Andrews “was obviously quite distraught,” the fire department said on its Facebook page. The couple alerted a dive team that was patrolling the river, and within five minutes of searching, firefighter Jeremy Marrache located the ring and returned it to its “very relieved and excited” owner, the department said in its post. “They all had wives, and they all knew how important this was and how sentimental it was to us,” Lynn Andrews said. Fortunately, Marrache said, the ring lay at an angle that caused the diamond to shimmer as he shined his flashlight over the silty bottom of the river. “We have open communications via our mask. So when I said I found it, the person attending us relayed that message, so I could hear everybody cheering,” he told WBZ. “This is an amazing example of using our training for public service and a terrific opportunity for the dive team and marine unit members to practice working together,” fire Lt. Stephen Capuccio said in a statement. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
