Sam Jockel is a social entrepreneur, author, and passionate advocate for emotional resilience, drawing on her experiences founding parent-focused communities like ParentTV and School Mum.In this deeply moving conversation, Sam and I dive into something every parent feels but few of us talk about openly — the emotional weight we carry into parenthood. We explore how our own childhood experiences, especially the hard and often hidden parts, shape the way we show up for our kids today. Sam opens up about her personal journey through trauma, healing, and self-discovery, and how that process has completely transformed the way she parents. This isn't a chat about quick parenting hacks. It's about long-game thinking. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. And it's about building the kind of emotional resilience that helps our children thrive — not by being perfect, but by being present. If you enjoy this episode, you have to watch SEEN, the film that Sam has recently launched. Hello, how are you doing?I hope you're well.I've got a treat for you this week. My friend Nick Parker, who I interviewed in episode #75, mentioned a reading retreat that he went on and suggested I interview the guy who set it up, because that person cares very deeply about fatherhood too. That guy, Rob Poynton, turned out to be the author of a book I'd read on improvisation, and is the person I talk with in this week's podcast.* We dive into how improvisation can help all aspects of your life, especially parenting* We discuss the need for pausing in today's hectic world* And we also explore how to have a good conversation. As well as many other things.I love Rob's approach to improv and as it turns out, parenting:* Notice more* Let go* Use EverythingI think this way of thinking has so much to offer and I'm going to lean into it more myself.I really hope you enjoy this conversation with Rob.Big hugRichIf you'd like to find out more about Rob, visit his website and check out his books.P.S. If you're wondering about the photo, Rob had just cleaned the chimney.Takeaways* Improvisation is a valuable skill in everyday life, particularly in parenting and organisational contexts.* Pausing and embracing uncertainty are essential for navigating change and responding effectively to unexpected situations.* Improvisation is about being present, paying attention, and using everything that comes your way.* Creating the conditions for collaboration and inclusivity is crucial in both parenting and organisational settings.* Shifting from seeking the 'right' way to embracing 'good' ways of doing things can lead to more creativity and flexibility. Allow conversations to flow naturally and don't be constrained by rigid time limits.* Be present in conversations and avoid wasting people's time.* Use practices from improv, such as being physically present and creating action, to improve conversations.* Embrace vulnerability in conversations and create space for yourself to nourish your well-being.* Prioritise quality conversations and recognise their impact on relationships and personal growth.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background01:13 Book Release and Background04:09 The Importance of Pausing05:09 The Power of Improvisation in Everyday Life06:08 The Difference Between Improv and Stand-Up08:00 The Audience's Response to Improv09:31 The Application of Improv in Parenting10:25 The Messiness of Parenting and Organizational Life11:50 Creating the Conditions for Collaboration15:12 The Rules of Improv20:22 Slowing Down and Letting Go22:45 Shifting from the Right Way to Good Ways24:38 Being a Facilitator in Parenting27:04 Creating the Conditions for Conversations29:52 Using Objects as Conversation Tools35:37 Including Outlier Perspectives37:33 Setting Up Family Meetings40:21 Knowing When to End a Conversation41:15 The Importance of Allowing Conversations to Flow Naturally42:44 Leadership and Sensing When a Conversation is Done44:08 Creating Quality Time and Being Present in Conversations45:33 Practices from Improv for Better Conversations48:48 Using Physical Practices to Improve Conversations49:43 Action vs Activity in Conversations51:31 Interrupting Routines to Create Action in Conversations55:53 The Essence of Good Conversation59:43 The Importance of Vulnerability in Conversations01:07:07 The Reading Retreat and Creating Space for Yourself01:12:14 Setting Healthy Boundaries for Yourself01:19:25 Taking Time for Reflection and Prioritising What Matters Get full access to The Dad Mindset at www.thedadmindset.com/subscribe

I'm curious…How do you talk to yourself? Would you be happy for someone to speak to your kids in the same way? Do you often find yourself speaking to the ones you love the worst?Self-talk has such a massive impact on your sense of wellbeing (and those around you) yet it's easy to overlook when it's not aligned with the type of parent or person we aspire to be.Family and child counsellor, Jacintha Field, shares the importance of healing, self-reflection, and taking responsibility for one's actions as well as the power of self-opinion and setting boundaries for self-care in this week's conversation. She highlights the significance of self-talk and the impact it has on our relationships, especially with our children. Why rewards and punishment don't work

What are your long term goals for your children? Are they to be:* Happy * Ethical* Caring* Compassionate* Independent* Self-reliant* Curious* Critical thinkersOr some variation on this theme? If that's the case, throw out the carrot and the stick because research shows that rewards and punishment don't work. Well what the heck am I going to do you might ask? This podcast episode (one of my favourites to revisit) with Alfie Kohn emphasises the importance of unconditional love in parenting, contrasting it with the common practice of using rewards and conditional affection to manipulate a child's behaviour. The more you use power on children to get them to do what you want, the less influence you'll probably have on their lives - Thomas GordonTraditional parenting advice often focuses on control and compliance rather than meeting children's true needs. However, research indicates that treating children with respect, understanding their perspectives, and empowering them to make decisions is a much better approach for raising happy, ethical, and independent critical thinking individuals. That's why Alfie advocates for loving our children unconditionally and considering our children's needs rather than demanding strict obedience. You can start by asking yourself the questions:* What does my child need right now?* How can I meet those needs?* What are my long-term goals for my child?* What are some ways to respond in situations rather than react?* How can I be an even better parent than my parents?Practice perspective taking Try to imagine how you would feel if somebody just said what you said to your child (or used the tone you just used) to you, then go one step further and imagine now how it feels from your child's perspective (because what might be ok with you, might impact them very differently because you are not the same person).Key takeaways:* Treat your kids respectfully* Do perspective taking* Ask a lot more questions than telling.Good luck!Big hugRichTo find out more about Alfie's work visit www.alfiekohn.org Get full access to The Dad Mindset at www.thedadmindset.com/subscribe

Stacey blew my mind when she described the process of going through perimenopause as somewhat akin to going through puberty backwards…(I thought it was bad enough forwards). Some of my take aways are:* Just like going through puberty, there can be a lot of confusion going through perimenopause* The importance of good communication* There can be some serious health impacts if nutrition is not adequate* Strength-based training is essential* Some coping mechanisms that might have worked in the past may now exacerbate things (so booking a massage for your partner could be infinitely more helpful than offering her a glass of wine). It's a window of opportunity to re-evaluate your life load, how you're spending your time, and looking after yourself. To find out more about Stacey:Her website: www.cultivatingwellness.com.auBook an Appointment with Stacey: https://cultivatingwellness.com.au/book-an-appointment/Find her on Facebook: www.facebook.com/staceycurcioNDHere are some other resources for more info on perimenopause that Stacey recommends:* Australian Menopause Society* Lara Briden – podcast, blog, book (Hormone Repair Manual)* The Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research* Menstrual tracking Apps – Clue, Woman Log, fembleI hope you find it helpful.Big hugRich Get full access to The Dad Mindset at www.thedadmindset.com/subscribe

Hi there,I hope you're well. Now this episode is a bit of a special one. It's the 100th episode so I thought I'd do something a bit different. It's my dad's 80th birthday and I started writing him a letter the other day to try to express how grateful I was for some of the things I remember. Yet, I found the process really quite thought provoking, so I wanted to share it with you.Dear Dad,It's your birthday today and although we're not together, you always feel really close to me.I often recall our time spent together as I was growing up. I guess I thought it would last forever and it didn't occur to me at the time on that day as I left for uni that I was actually leaving home for good.I think words struggle to express the gratitude a child owes to his or her parent. However, I wanted to let you know that I have so many happy memories of growing up and am grateful for all that you have done for me and my sister.I remember you holding onto my bike as I was learning to ride in the park and then letting go at just the right moment when I could balance enough for those first few exhilarating metres of freedom. I also remember, probably a few months later, you racing down the steepest hill in town behind me when my brakes were failing and taking hold  of my handlebars to help me avert disasterThank you for fixing my punctured tyres, as well as all the other kids' punctures in the street. The way you toiled for hours one fathers day when other dads were relaxing, you helped build a massive cubby house on the old tree stump. Building a zip line that became centre stage for all us kids in the street to dance with danger, even if Mark I danced a little too closely to danger. You showed me how it's much more exciting to fire fireworks across the ground rather than up in the air.How not to burn out a wasps' nest with petrol.I was so impressed when you spent weeks converting an old Ford Transit ambulance into a campervan but it was when you and I went to pick up the old ambulance together that I enjoyed most.Love, I've heard it said is spelt by children ‘T-I-M-E' and it was the time that you and I spent together that I cherish the most. The time when you let me ‘help' you do jobs around the house and garden. I know now that you could have gotten those jobs done a lot quicker on your own but it meant so much to me to be by your side. The time that we'd spend on camping holidays, just walking to the camp shop for a bottle of milk and a newspaper.  Or just walking up from the beach to buy some frothy coffees to take back. Those quiet times may not have seemed like much to you, but they meant the world to me. I was spending time with my dad.Taking me to athletic meets or racing radio control cars every Tuesday night at the school hall. How you spent hours and probably a fortune in 10ps to win me a digital watch in the shuffling shelf coin drop slot machine.Even though you bought me my first car, it was our road-trip to Wales to look at buying a beat up combi that I remember the most. Especially when the rusty door slid off as I opened it. It needed more than a bit of welding. And now I am a father as well, I know it can't have been easy for you. The tension between balancing the need to work to put bread on the table with the desire to spend time with your family.I now try to imagine the trade-offs you had to make. It must have burned to see us head away on summer holidays while you had to stay home to work. You gave me the mindset that things can and should be fixed. You taught me to drive, and then how to shake things up in snow and mud.The Swiss Army knife you gave me is still one of my favourite possessions. The way is can fix almost anything reminds me of you.I've learnt so much from you, but most of all, how important it is to be a dad. Thanks for holding on, and for letting go.I see you dad, I'm proud of you and I love you. Yet, all you seem to do is chores at the weekend after a big week of work?Well, Sarah and I've been feeling like that for a while now. We've been feeling like we're just not living true to our values. When we got married we thought we'd go on adventures all the time. The last thirteen years of raising a family have been massively rewarding, and we have managed to go on some adventures, but not nearly as many as we'd like.So we've decided to shake things up a bit.We are currently trying a bit of an experiment. About a month ago Sarah and I decided to rent our house out, take the kids out of school and live of the road for a year. Now I have to admit we're in a very fortunate position to be able to do this, I have a job that I can do from anywhere, especially with the help of Elon Musk's Starlink system and Sarah is parking her forest kinder for a while. The short of it is:We're living in a caravan, driving from town to town up the East Coast of Australia and then who knows where.I work Mon-Friday while Sarah takes the kids on adventures, and I get to do some adventuring at the weekends in new locations. We're currently in Agnes Waters in Queensland and have actually escaped the Victorian winter which is pretty awesome. It's been a bit hectic, from making the decision, then putting our house up for rent, packing, clearing and cleaning the house from top to bottom and then blitzing the garden to then hitching up the caravan and setting off on the road took three weeks which has not left much time for podcasting, sorry about that. However, I've now got a whole new lens to view parenting through and test to destruction. So the podcasts are going change up a little over the coming weeks. Now the wheels could still fall off, both figuratively and literally, so I'm not entirely sure how long we're gonna make it. But we're going to give it a red hot go; Trip in a Van style. Now, we only set out last week and I've already got some great new material, like how not to drive through boom gates with bikes on the roof, or cook the water pump and battery in the caravan simultaneously. Needless to say I think there are going to be tears and hissy fits—and the kids might get a bit upset too. However, on the flip side, we're hoping there's also going to be some exploration, discovery, meeting of new people and adventure, lots of adventure. And I'd love to have you join us for the journey, so I'll be publishing updates as we go.In the meantime, hope you have a great week and enjoy your caffeinated beverage.Big HugRich This is a public episode. How to get started with chickens

Did you know that chickens can purr? No…I didn't either.I also never knew that chickens had teeth, well, in a strange kind of avian way.If you've ever thought about getting some chickens (or chooks as they are known here in Australia) for your back garden, listen to this episode with Tove Danovich, journalist and author of the book, Under The Henfluence: Inside the World of Backyard Chickens and the People Who Love Them. Tove has an infectious enthusiasm for chickens, an enthusiasm that is closely matched by my daughter, and this special episode's co-host, Annika.Annie, has loved chickens for years and recently more and more families have been asking for our help in how to get started in keeping their own chickens, so we thought we'd put together an episode that will give you an overview of:* Things to consider before starting a flock of chickens* Things to consider before building a chicken coop* And things to wonder at because they are, quite simply, fascinating. Some of the key takeaways, chatting with Tove, for me are:* Chickens can live for up to 13 years, so if you are thinking of getting some pets be prepared to have them around for a while* Buying eggs at a supermarket wanting to select for optimal animal welfare is trickier than you might think* Chickens make for good pets in that, unlike cats and dogs, they don't really care when you are not around as long as someone feeds them and puts them out* Roosters don't have penises, (that's right, you read correctly) and that's why it's so damn hard to sex them at birth.Anyway, I hope you take as much from this chat with Tove as I did.Big hugRichIf you'd like to check out Tove's book you can find it wherever you can buy books. Also, if you've like to check out Tove's chicken Instagram account, which I highly recommend, it's @bestlittlehenhouseAnd Tove's website is here, if you'd like to get in touch with her.By the way, I also looked up the word husband (from ‘animal husbandry') and it seems that the verb to husband, meaning "to manage carefully," derives from an older meaning of husband or huseband, from Old English, hūsbōnda, from Old Norse, hūsbōndi (hūs, 'house' + bōndi, būandi, present participle of būa, 'to dwell', so, etymologically, 'a householder'). Husband in the 14th century referred to the ownership and care of a household or farm, but today means the "control or judicious use of resources.” Well, that was a mouthful. Kevin Kelly on excellent advice for living—and parenting

This episode I chat with Kevin Kelly, Senior Maverick at Wired magazine, co-chair of The Long Now Foundation and founder of the Cool Tools website. Kevin is also the author of multiple best-selling books about the future of technology and is well known for his radical optimism. The key take-aways for me in this conversation were the importance of:* Setting up more family rituals and* Defining an identity or brand for your family.Kevin regrets not having set up more family rituals as they are so easy and free, yet so meaningful. Even if it's just locking in the ritual of cooking pancakes every Sunday morning, It forms an anchor, it's dependable and children crave that kind of security. The importance of defining an identity or brand for the family is not to lock the children into something but to give them a sense of foundation or ‘coming from' somewhere. This in turn then helps them define their own identity as they evolve and grow up.Kevin is such a generous font of wisdom and his new book ‘Excellent Advice for Living - Wisdom I Wish I'd Known Earlier' has a staggering amount of philosophical and practical advice in it.Pound for pound I reckon this book has more nuggets of gold than any other book on the market at the moment. I must have highlighted every second or third passage as I read it.Now you may feel this is just another self-help book, but it is not. It is more of a reminder to self, or tactical aide memoire, to do the things that will genuinely help you live a better life. Kevin wrote out the original list of advice, that formed this book, to pass on life lessons to his children. The list then kept getting passed onto more and more people, so in the end he made it into a book—for you and me.To find out more about Kevin visit kk.orgSome of the books and authors Kevin mentioned that changed his life are:* Annie Dillard's ‘Pilgrim at Tinker Creek'* Henry David Thoreau's ‘Walden'* The poet Rumi.He also mentioned the company Nuralink.Portrait photography by Christopher Michel This is a public episode. In 2018 Michael Judd and his wife Trish went through an experience that every parent dreads, having a child diagnosed with cancer. In this episode, Michael describes how having lost his daughter to medulloblastoma he almost lost everything else. It's an extraordinary tale of transformation and one with a silver lining. Not only has this experience been the catalyst for starting an incredible wellbeing movement supporting many men to thrive and grow but there is also a beautiful next chapter. Some of the things I took from this are:* The importance of reaching out to people to just tell them you love them—you never know, it might save someone's life* Being there for the long haul when people are battling ordeals as a family* The power of service to others and how it helps you as well* Service as a starting place for finding meaningThe wellbeing group Juddy set up is call DIIGG (Doing Imperfect Inner Growth in Groups) and you can find it on Instagram here.If you'd like to reach out to Michael his email is info@diiggwellbeing.com.auLastly, if you are in Torquay on Sunday 30th April (i.e. today) and would like to get along to their next event it is going to be held at Ocean Grind at 6pm.Big hugRich This is a public episode. Defying the system and saying 'YES, YOU CAN'

This is an episode from the archives that I wanted to re-share with you because it's been two years since it's guest, Dick Hoyt, sadly died. Whenever I think that the odds are stacked against me or something seems impossible, I try to remind myself what Dick Hoyt and his family did to defy the system and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to give his disabled son a better life and in the process inspire the world.Dick and his son Rick, competed in over a thousand races, including Ironman competitions and even running across the United States in 45 days. The only catch is that Dick's son, Rick was diagnosed at birth as a spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy which meant that he couldn't walk or talk, let alone run, swim or cycle. In a triathlon Dick would pull Rick in a boat with a bungee cord attached to a vest around his waist and to the front of the boat for the swimming stage. For the bike stage, Rick would sit in a custom made bucket seat in front of the handlebars and then Dick would push Rick in a custom made wheelchair buggy for the running stage. In the early days, Dick and his wife Judy fought to integrate Rick into the public school system rather than putting him in an institution. They pushed administrators at every life stage to see beyond Rick's physical limitations and have been such an inspiration in not giving up and always saying, yes, you can.I think my key take-aways are:* The biggest limitations in life are the ones you impose on yourself* There is nearly always another way, you just haven't thought of it yet* You don't have to be the fastest or best in the world at something to be inspirational. After the interview I realised that I forgot to ask Dick what his diet was like because he used put in some serious training and was super fit for an 80 year old.Due to Dick's hereditary high cholesterol problem, he used to watch what he ate and he tried to eat healthy at all times. So his diet was basically the same everyday. For breakfastGreek yogurt with walnuts and blueberries mixed in. Also a banana and an orange and a glass of 100% cranberry/apple juice. At lunch He would do a grilled chicken sandwich or a salad with grilled chicken or tuna fish and oil and vinegar.Dinner Chicken breast or grilled salmon. Baked sweet potato or brown rice and steamed veggies with either corn on the cob or green beans or broccoli.Alternatively he would eat pasta with some chicken and fresh red peppers, mushrooms and garlic in a red sauce with a green salad. After dinner snackSome unbuttered popcorn or crackers.Pretty amazing really…I hope you find this chat with Dick Hoyt as inspirational as I did.Big HugRichPS If you'd like to find out more about Team Hoyt visit: www.teamhoyt.com This is a public episode. Avoiding burnout in a digital landscape

This episode we have digital wellbeing expert Dr Kristy Goodwin back on the show to discuss the research-based micro-habits that you can develop to claim back your time, attention and arguably your health. One of the subjects we get into is burnout, something very close to my heart that I've personally struggled with, and I think this work that Dr Kristy is doing is a crucial piece of the puzzle for navigating times that are seemingly indexed towards burning us out if we're not careful.Whilst the pandemic has been somewhat of a forced recalibration on our priorities and values in a good way, there is a bit of a digital hangover that we've carried into our returning to normal lives that we have yet to adjust to. As humans, we are designed to deal with stress, just in short intense bursts and then we need to re-settle and recoup. What our current digital environment is seeming to do is keep us wired constantly and that is not good for our health or wellbeing.Dr Kristy's research indicates in Australia that a staggering 62% of employees are self-reporting as burnt out, as well as 68% of managers. Dr Kristy terms it being OUSTED: (Overwhelmed, Under the pump, Stressed, Time poor, Exhausted and Distracted).Dr Kristy talks to four pillars of the digital age that we need to master.* Establish digital borders and boundaries (set guardrails for our digital device use)* Start to work in alignment with how our brain and body is designed (incorporating rest away from alerts is critical)* Manage our digital distractions (maximise your browser window when you want to concentrate on something)* Digital disconnection (unplugging from devices at certain times). One of the things I've found really useful is bundling WhatsApp notifications. With WhatsApp I used to get distracted by alerts all the time. Once I set a particular time of day to receive those messages, I could process them all at once, or at least stay up to date without being constantly interrupted.Dr Kristy's book Dear Digital, We need to talk…If you'd like to find out more about Dr Kristy, her website is here, her Linkedin profile is here and her Instagram account is here.Big HugRich This is a public episode. How to deal with death, dying, grief and loss

This episode I chat with Cole Imperi. Cole is an author, speaker, founder of the School of American Thanatology and one of America's leading experts on death, dying and grief.I've wanted to talk with Cole ever since hearing her on Alie Ward's podcast, Ologies (which you should check out because it's awesome). Cole has dedicated her life to helping people navigate some of the hardest times that we all inevitably will have to grapple with. Some of the key take aways for me for dealing with death, dying, grief and loss were:* Use the proper words for things and explain them with complete and accurate information. Don't be vague and say things like: “Granpa got sick” when he dies because what are the kids going to think next time they get sick?* Kids pick up what bad words are (painfully true in my case) so if we drop our voice when we talk about death, the kids are alerted. Try not to talk about this very normal thing called ‘death' like it's something that shouldn't be talked about.* Grief is not an emotion, grief is a response to loss. Troubles can arise when different family members respond to loss in different ways so try to be aware of that and don't judge. There are six categories of signs that you are in the grief response:* Physical* Social* Spiritual* Behavioural* Cognitive* EmotionalOne that I totally had never thought of was number 5. Cognitive, and Cole shares a great story that explains this. And yes, it's completely natural to want to burst out laughing at seemingly the most inappropriate time during a funeral…Phew, I thought that was just me.The clear message that comes through though is:Navigating loss is an opportunity for a family to become stronger, or any of our relationships to become stronger. It's through the difficult parts of life that the most glue is built between us. It's what bonds us together, it's what instantly connects us, but it feels really uncomfortable.Cole's suggestion around how to approach another person's grief was really interesting too, she suggests approaching it with curiosity and asking lots of questions. Grief is something that just needs to be witnessed, just needs to be seen, just needs to be held, and that's it.The english language doesn't have enough words to use when dealing with death and dying, and a lot of the words used to describe grief are borrowed from clinical settings and that can sometimes be the reason that we don't feel right talking about it.Cole is dedicated to helping develop more people-friendly ways for us to describe death, dying, grief and loss and I think it's such an important skill to develop. If you'd like to find out more or subscribe to Cole's newsletter, you can find her at www.coleimperi.com or on Instagram @imperi.Some of the things Cole suggested googling are:* Terror Management Theory* The Ernest Becker Foundation* Death anxiety reduction techniquesIf you are currently experiencing grief, or having to navigate a death, or someone dying in the family my heart goes out to you and I hope you find listening to Cole as helpful as I did.Big HugRich This is a public episode.
