Keir Starmer is in Ukraine today, on his first visit to Kyiv since becoming Prime Minister. And he came bearing gifts: a 100-year partnership agreement between the UK and Ukraine, covering nine ‘pillars' from culture to science. It is hoped that the new pact will define the relationship between the two countries well beyond the current conflict with Russia. This is all in the context of Donald Trump's return to the White House, with his administration agitating for a peace deal. Is peace on the horizon? Also on the podcast, Kemi Badenoch's big speech – in which she criticised the decisions made by successive Tory prime ministers – was overshadowed by the announcement that there will be government-backed inquiries into grooming gangs. Is this the right call? Oscar Edmondson speaks to Katy Balls and Mark Galeotti, head of Mayak Intelligence and honorary professor at UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

Gunmen killed at least 137 people at a concert hall outside Moscow in the deadliest terror attack in Russia in 20 years. Why did this happen now, what does it mean, and how will the Russian state respond? Author and analyst Mark Galeotti, an honorary professor at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies in London, joins host Steve Gutterman to discuss.
The pandemic showed us we could all work in different places; can we all work at different times, too? That idea – known as ‘asynchronous' work – has gained traction at a number of companies. Workers march to the beat of their own drum, and only occasionally speak to their scattered colleagues in real time. That gives them greater flexibility; but does it make collaboration harder? How can a manager get a handle on their team's work if they're several time zones away? And how can colleagues be expected to bond, or trust each other, without spending real time together? Guest host Mischa Frankl-Duval speaks to Scott Farquhar, CEO of software group Atlassian, whose employees work from 13 countries; and Jen Rhymer, an assistant professor at the UCL School of Management, to find out how companies make asynchronous work… work.Want more? Today I talked to Adam Kingl about his new book Sparking Success: Why Every Leader Needs to Develop a Creative Mindset (Kogan Page, 2023). Most or, indeed, basically all of us start out being highly creative kids filled with wonderment, only to often have that spark “knocked out” of us by the straight jacket of the status quo. This guest aims to change that scenario by drawing on his theater and general, artistic background. The bulk of this episode explores a variety of exercises to stimulate innovation and empathy. For instance, why not host a failure party to generate learnings as well as recognition that, of course, not every new initiative will succeed? Likewise, how about imagining if, say, a Salvador Dali or Jackson Pollack was in charge of product development or next your ad campaign; what might it look like then? From the marketplace to the workplace, Kingl takes us on a journey to . . . what might be, if we only dare. Adam Kingl is a speaker, educator, advisor and author who is an expert on leadership, creativity, innovation and adaptability. He's an adjunct faculty member at the UCL School of Management and at Hult International Business School. He's also an instructor at the University of Cambridge, and at institutions of higher learning in Sweden and Ireland. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. It was Peter the Great who created a new capital on the Baltic, and Catherine the Great who extended Russian influence south and west. Sweden, Poland, and the Ottomans all felt the Russian expansion in a century of geopolitical drama. This, says presenter Misha Glenny, is all part of the build up to today's war in Ukraine. With contributions from Virginia Rounding, biographer of Catherine the Great; Prof Simon Dixon of University College London; Prof Robert Service, author of The Last Tsar; Prof Janet Hartley, author books on the Volga and Siberia; and Dr Sarah Young of the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Chances are you've had something to do with “mindfulness” recently. Maybe you've been sent to “mindfulness” training. Or, perhaps you've been listening to a mindfulness podcast. Or, perhaps you're using a “mindfulness” app, such as HeadSpace. In this episode, Franziska Link investigates the growing use of mindfulness therapies at universities, such as UCL, in their provision for student support and welfare. What good are they? What do they involve? What are the pros – and the cons – of this approach. Franziska interviews four people with quite different relationships to mindfulness therapies. « Anyone who doesn't regret the passing of the Soviet Union has no heart. Anyone who wants it restored has no brains.” When a fresh-faced Vladimir Putin made those comments back in 2000, Russia had only recently lost its Soviet Empire and endured a series of violent conflicts within the borders of the Federation, most notably in Chechnya. Just like the rest of Europe lost its colonies in the latter half of the 20th century, Russia was forced then to lose large chunks of its imperial Soviet possessions. But over the last two decades, Vladimir Putin nonetheless managed to maintain a strong influence network in his “near abroad,” making Russia a central actor in the politics of the Caucasus and Central Asia. Yet the increasingly costly and unsuccessful “special military operation” in Ukraine considerably undermines Russia's might and clout. As a result, a series of border conflicts and uprisings sprang up in the former USSR, from the reheated conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan to the skirmishes between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Our two guests this week are veteran Russian analysts. Angela Stent is a non-resident senior fellow at Brookings and professor emerita of government and foreign service at Georgetown. She's a former national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia and the author of Putin's World: Russia against the West and with the Rest (2019) and is about to be republished with an extra chapter on the war in Ukraine. Mark Galeotti is a political scientist specialized in Russian security affairs and the director of the consultancy Mayak Intelligence. He is an Honorary Professor at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies and a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute. He's also publishing later this week Putin's Wars, from Chechnya to Ukraine (2022) which should be another incredibly timely read. For our Patreon section, our two experts took an in-depth dive into the Russian Federation itself. War and the ramping up of conscription sparked some major tensions within ethnic minority groups which could upset the balance of power within the nominally federal Federation of Russia. We also had a conversation on Russian imperialism, modern Russian nationalism and whether Russia sees itself as a former colonial power. Russia's assault on Ukraine continues eight months after the February 24 invasion. Amid setbacks on the battlefield, the Kremlin has taken a series of steps in an effort to gain the upper hand -- or avoid losing the war. Author and analyst Mark Galeotti, an honorary professor at the UCL School of Slavonic & East European Studies, joins host Steve Gutterman to take stock.
Social media users have been coming across a term called “quiet quitting” for quite some time now. It is everywhere - from Instagram reels, Tweets and even on Twitter videos. People have associated the term with laziness, but the concept goes beyond this simplistic definition. But before we delve into its details, let us find out some background. The Covid-19 pandemic saw a major change in the way people work. With working from home becoming a norm, various studies showed how employees were unable to maintain a work-life balance. A report by a national daily stated that the burden was more on women. With this, people's expectations of their jobs also changed. They no longer want to work at places where the pay is less and work hours undefined. Anthony Klotz, a faculty member at the UCL School of Management, coined the term “The Great Resignation” to define the phenomenon. Understanding ‘quiet quitting' Quiet quitting is often confused with quitting the job altogether. But it's not. It is defined as performing only the jobs assigned to an employee by the employer and not going above and beyond the job description. People have been taking to Twitter to share how setting boundaries at work has changed the game for them. The concept of quiet quitting stands exactly opposite to the “hustle culture”. Under that, the employees are encouraged to “make every moment count” and work hard to earn money as well as promotions. With quiet quitting, employees discourage practices like checking their emails outside their work hours etc. So, is “quiet quitting” a new term? Well, no. A report released by Gallup showed that only 20 per cent of the employees are truly engaged in their work, others have been practising quiet quitting for a long time.
Monkeypox may not be as deadly as Covid-19, but that didn't stop the World Health Organization from declaring the recent outbreak a global health emergency. More than 80 countries where Monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks of the virus and with vaccines in short supply, some fear the virus could spiral out of control. Guests: Dr. Margaret Harris WHO Spokesperson Dr. Amesh Adalja Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security Oksana Pyzik Senior Teaching Fellow at the UCL School of Pharmacy

What's behind President Vladimir Putin's assertion that Russia has not yet begun to fight the war in Ukraine "in earnest?" And when Western officials talk about victory for Ukraine, what does that mean -- and how far will they go to achieve it? Analyst and author Mark Galeotti, an honorary professor at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies in London, joins host Steve Gutterman to discuss.

The number of casualties is growing as Russia wages its war in Ukraine. Will President Vladimir Putin escalate even further and why does he talk about nuclear weapons? I talked to Mark Galeotti who is, as his Twitter bio says, an analyst of murky topics from Russian politics to global crime. Dr. Galeotti is the director of the consultancy firm Mayak Intelligence. He is also an Honorary Professor at UCL School of Slavonic & East European Studies and a Senior Associate Fellow at RUSI. His books include We Need To Talk About Putin and most recently The Weaponisation of Everything. He is also a creator of the podcast In Moscow's Shadows. Why does Dr. Galeotti see some parallels between the Russian attack against Ukraine and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan? He tells Bloomberg Westminster's Caroline Hepker and Yuan Potts that he is hoping politics will be more boring in 2022. Plus Oksana Pyzik from the UCL School of Pharmacy says the U.K. needs to do more to minimize transmission between children. But she is hopeful this will be the last winter where we have to make difficult decisions to protect the NHS. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr Mark Galeotti joins Last Week on Earth for a conversation on Russia. Galeotti, Director of the consultancy firm Mayak Intelligence, Honorary Professor at UCL School of Slavonic & East European Studies and Senior Associate Fellow at RUSI, has spent the last 40 years researching Russian history and security issues. In the episode, he gives an introduction his latest book A Short History of Russia while sharing some short anecdotes from Russia's history, specifically about the character that is Peter the Great.Galeotti tells the history of modernisation in Russia and how different rulers have approached the subject, with occasional bloody despotism. Today in Putin's Russia, modernisation has partly advanced through technical solutions, but they are still lacking in rule of law and corruption. However, Galeotti describes how there might soon be an advancement of rule of law by the kleptocratic elite. These corrupted leaders, who have stolen from the public good, will soon get the incentive to create rule of law to protect their stolen plunder and support the transfer of wealth to the new generation. There are many misconceptions about Russia, one of them being that the West assumes that Russia always, cunningly, has a plan. Like any other state, Russia is a diverse and opportunistic country, that is not as centrally controlled country as many people may think. They want to be perceived as strong and powerful, and they thus act accordingly, regardless of their actual geopolitical status. When looking at Russia, there is a consistent focus on Putin, who, on one hand is a powerful actor but far from the only one. Russia's administration is complex one with many important characters who often tend to get overlooked. The discussion continues by addressing the new Biden administration, the recent summits and what the newly elected American president would like to see from Russia. The Russo-American relation is special and for Russia, the single most important actor is the US, thus meaning that the EU is not prioritised - the US have clear leadership and collective approach while the policy vision of the EU is a scattered one.Global Arena Research Institute is an independent, non-partisan research organisation that combines the most advanced methods of AI-driven data, scientific and other artificial reasoning capabilities, elevating data science into completely new levels of opportunity. Our goal is to provide unprecedented insights into the nature, impact, and management of globalization in order to improve institutional and governmental as well as business, energy and other sectors' decision making. Our mission is to make the most of organically connecting AI-level reasoning capacities with the human-level critical reasoning capacities for the sake of a better future.
In this episode, we speak to Dr Cathy Elliot from the UCL School of Political Science about the 'politics of pity'. The ways in which we, as those who are frequently the providers, as opposed to the beneficiaries of financial and other forms of aid, view and relate to those we seek to help is a notoriously complex issue. When people are only motivated to help others to dispel their own feelings of discomfort, upholding respect and dignity, and providing empowering aid becomes difficult. In this episode we explore the concepts of saviourism, compassion fatigue, and storytelling as a means to effect change.
