The BBC recently reported that last year was the world's hottest on record. We discussed these findings with the Environmental Safety Group's Janet Howitt.Work on constitutional reform is paused while treaty negotiations are ongoing. The Deputy Chief Minister confirmed the select committee had still not met but said an outcome from negotiations would have an effect on constitutional changes and on the work needed for this. Joseph Garcia was speaking to GBC's News Editor Christine Vasquez on the 75th anniversary of Gibraltar's first Constitution Order.Traders are discussing how a sales tax could work, should it form part of a treaty agreement, and those GBC has spoken to are open to the idea. The Chief Minister told this programme the government was consulting businesses over the introduction of a sales tax - with changes to import duty the other option. The Federation of Small Businesses has told GBC it has written to Number Six requesting further information. Shelina Assomull's told us more. Young people interested in videography are being invited by Cultural Services to take part in this year's Youth Arts Jamboree. At least 62 are known to have died after torrential rain caused devastating flash floods in Valencia south-eastern Spain. Spanish weather service AEMET reported that Chiva, in the Valencia region, recorded 491mm of rain in just eight hours on Tuesday - the equivalent to a year's worth of rain. Gibraltarian Jason Goldwin says it's a sad day for his adopted city Valencia, which has been the worst hit by the flash floods.Whilst the worst of the weather has affected the southeastern Spain, Gibraltar has certainly felt the heavy rains too. Zoe Hutton from the Met Office explained what we can expect over the coming days.Cultural Services was "very saddened" that a mural was vandalised at Prince Edward's Gate, but is it part of a wider problem with graffiti and a lack of civic pride? Evan Christopher: The Tradition is Eternally Modern

The Working Artist Project

In this weeks episode of the Working Artist Project, Darrian Douglas and Gregory Agid speak to clarinetist virtuoso, Evan Christopher Evan Christopher combines virtuosity, immaculate taste, and enthusiasm with a commitment to exploring the full range of possibilities in the New Orleans clarinet tradition. His highly personal brand of “contemporary, early jazz” strives to extend the legacies of early Creole clarinet heroes such as Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard and Omer Simeon. Critics remarking on Christopher's dynamic expressiveness have coined his style “close-encounter music” (NEW YORK TIMES) and have called his respect for the music traditions of New Orleans, “a triumph, joining the present seamlessly to a glorious past.” (THE OBSERVER, UK). His journey on Clarinet Road began in 1994, when he left his native California to join the New Orleans music community. Diverse freelance work included gigs with musicians such as Al Hirt and veterans of Preservation Hall to funk and brass bands including the Nightcrawlers and Galactic. But in 1996, he left for San Antonio, Texas to appear nightly for nearly three years with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band and record several of their public radio programs, Riverwalk: Live from the Landing. When Christopher returned to New Orleans in 2001, his published research on the New Orleans clarinet style initiated pursuit of a Master's degree in Musicology at Tulane University. He began touring internationally and producing his “Clarinet Road” series of CDs (STR Digital). In August 2005, when Federal levees failed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina decimating the city, Christopher left again for Paris at the invitation of the French Embassy's Cultural Services division, where he formed his group, Django à la Créole. This Europe-based quartet fused Gypsy Swing with Latin-tinged grooves of New Orleans and beyond and was distinguished for an acoustic intimacy paired with driving swing. Critics charmed by the group queried, “Is there a more graceful band at work at the moment?” (THE SUNDAY TIMES UK). Three CDs for Lejazzetal (London), in partnership with Frémeaux & Associés (Paris)—Django à la Créole (2007), Finesse (2010), and LIVE! (2014)—earned the group critical attention worldwide for its elegant character. As a composer, Christopher's original songs are the high point of acclaimed recordings including Delta Bound (Arbors, 2007) featuring pianist Dick Hyman, The Remembering Song (Arbors, 2010) featuring guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, his clarinet feature on the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra's Book One (2012) and his latest Clarinet Road CD, Bayou Chant & Other Textures (STR Digital, 2016). In July 2010, he had the honor to debut his Treat It Gentle Suite with the Minnesota Orchestra, which was the first concerto written for clarinet with band in the New Orleans style. Evan Christopher began his musical training on clarinet at age 11. In high school, he received the Louis Armstrong National Jazz Award and was one of the first graduates of the prestigious Idyllwild Arts Academy. He continued studies at the University of Southern California and graduated with honors from California State University, Long Beach. A brief teaching stint at the University of New Orleans saw the creation of a New Orleans music ensemble that performed with guest mentors such as Lucien Barbarin and Marcus Roberts. Since 2008, having returned once again to New Orleans, Christopher actively advocates for the cultural workforce and music education. He frequently tours with and records as a guest with forward-looking artists, while performances under his own name are often complemented by workshops and educational and community outreach. Occasional columns about the music scene and New Orleans culture written for NolaVie.com, evidence Evan's passion for the city's indigenous traditions.

In this episode of the French Insider, we speak with Emma Buttin, General Coordinator of the Residencies at Villa Albertine. Created by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Villa Albertine renews the concept of residence by shifting the center of gravity from the place of residence to the territory of residence and exploring this country-continent from the 10 major cities in the United States where it is present. Led by a team of 80 people spread out in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Washington D.C., the Villa Albertine seeks to accompany French cultural actors with on the ground support in their projects and challenges, through an ambitious, agile system closely connected to the prescribing bodies of the American cultural landscape.   What We Discussed In This Episode   Can you describe the history and mission of the Villa Albertine? The Villa Albertine has just announced its next 70 residencies for 2023. What are the cities in which residents can come to the United States? What is the method for applying for the Villa Albertine residencies? Can you tell us about some of the Villa Albertine residencies? What are the challenges you encounter in bringing residents to the Villa Albertine? Episode #42: May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In honor of this we explore the question “What is Your Soul Food?“ This episode is about self-care and the many ways we can attend to ourselves to support our mental health. But it is also about so much more than that!  These “soul food” activities and practices also help us work through both large and small traumas and helps us feel more resilient when facing the challenges of life. When we find ways to feed our own soul, we find ourselves more internally resourced and, therefore, more available to be kind, feel compassion and lend support to others. In this show, we hear from some community members about the soul foods that nourish them.  Host psychotherapist Debra Sloss and psychotherapist and grief and trauma specialist Kara Bowman discuss how soul foods support mental and physical health. We received such an array of different approaches from our listeners, that we made this this into a two-part series. Join us again next month for “Building Resilience: What's Your Soul Food? – Part 2” to hear more!  We hope these two episodes help you relish your own soul food buffet! Broadcast: 5/1/22 Special thanks  to Jeanne Baldzikowski for audio production, Jennifer Young for research and outreach, Leslie Nielsen for outreach and Izzy Weisz for marketing.
