Trevor Shelley De Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec from Pelican return on the lead up to their new LP Flickering Resonance hitting the streets on May 16 on Run for Cover Records. Aside from being, long-time personal friends of mine, they are profoundly creative musicians. Check them out on tour in the US in July. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Wandering Mind” – Pelican

Today, we present to you an interview with Jake Ewald of Slaughter Beach, Dog. It was a conversation that had a ton of laughs, some tears, and went down memory lane of an established musician who has accomplished the world with his music career. For Jake, the journey began with the well-known group, Modern Baseball, who started off as a project that most of them did while attending college. What was something that was supposed to be something they would do on the weekends or when they had some downtime, turned into a band that toured non-stop. Jake still remembers when they signed with Run for Cover Records. They received an email of interest on New Year's Day and went to an Outback Steakhouse to celebrate. It became the main focus very quickly and made everyone in the band grow up quick. Jake and a few other members even dropped out of college to continue pursuing music. He remembers the conversation with his family, and how they were not on board with it at first, but now think it's the coolest thing in the world. The band became cherished by many and to this day is still widely listened to. When Modern Baseball broke-up, they left a message on their social media pages about mental health. To this day I still highly respect them for being so open. Jake was unsure what his path would be at the time or if music would even continue being his focus. He picked up a job and was prepared for life after full-time music. But, Slaughter Beach, Dog quickly grew. Each year he noticed more people in the crowd. They are now several records deep, with "At the Moonbase," coming out last year as a surprise release on Christmas Eve. Jake says that he challenged himself to try new sounds for that record and explore new areas as a musician. He even talks about some of the records, movies, and books that have influenced select songs over the years. The record is incredible, and by now I am sure most people have gave it a spin. This is a loaded interview. Jake recently moved to the Poconos and chats about traveling to Philly every week to hit the studio. He still has a deep connection with the city that left him with valuable lessons and memories. So much so, that he stays close with a lot of the bands and friends in the scene. You can often find them on tour with him. One of his biggest friendships is with Ian Farmer, who has been there since the beginning of Modern Baseball and now is a huge part of Slaughter Beach, Dog. There is so much to this interview. It was personally extremely special for me. I hope you give it a listen because Jake gave great responses and left us with amazing stories. I hope every one is excited for a fantastic conversation with my good friend and colleague, Kameron Winters. Kameron is the Coordinator of LGBTQ & Diversity programs at American University in Washington DC. Kameron is also a Trans dude with a really great outlook on life and has a lot to share about Trans and queer activism in the wake of today's political climate. I am excited to share this conversation at the tail-end of Pride Month, because Kameron and I initially met for the first time at DC Pride over three yeas ago! So it's a reunion of sorts on the eduPUNX Podcast. EPISODE NOTES: - Kameron started his student affairs career at Berkeley, which has been the epicenter for political controversy lately. - There is a reference to a racially motivated event on American University. - Kameron references the frustratingly sad Gavin Grimm ruling from a few weeks ago. - Student protesters burned American flags at American University after the election. - Oh, I made it into Breitbart this year for hosting some therapy dogs on campus - coincidentally the day after the November election. - If you'd like to follow an inspiring and vulnerable video blogger, Kameron suggests checking out somekindofqueer on YouTube! - And if Instagram is more your speed, Kameron suggests following @TwoTransFriends! - Kameron is a big fan of the book, "Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation" - check it out! - But all-time, Kameron enjoys "Stone Butch Blues," a story of a transgender woman coming out in the 50s and 60s. - Of course, Kameron is a huge "House of Cards" fan - the new season on Netflix is ridiculous! And being in DC clearly had an added bonus to the perspective. - Currently, Kameron is rocking out the Baltimore-based band, Snail Mail, which was recently featured on Audio Tree Live, so check them out! - But Kameron is an old school Matt and Kim diehard. ADVERTISING NOTES: - Today's sponsor is the Transgressive Podcast hosted by Lindsay Legé, who is a licensed gender therapist that speaks with various Trans voices in the world in order to elevate the experiences of members of the Trans community. If you would like to specifically hear more about Kameron's experience as a Trans man, check out Episode 3 of this podcast! - Our record label sponsor for the week is The Native Sound, which is a boutique label in New York City, that represents artists like Miserable, No Sun, Sheer, Funeral Advantage, Koji, Petite League, and a whole lot more! You can check out more of their bands and buy some CDs or vinyl by visiting TheNativeSound.com! Or by following them on Instagram and/or Twitter @TheNativeSound. MUSIC NOTES: - The intro piece is "Cement," by the band Citizen off of the album, "Everybody is Going to Heaven,' which was released in 2015 by Run for Cover Records. - Today's music break was "CEOT7K," by the band Funeral Advantage off of the new EP, "Please Help Me," which was released in February on The Native Sound. FOLLOW, RATE, REVIEW, SUBSCRIBE, AND SHARE! - Any love on the iTunes app helps! Follow along on Instagram and Twitter @eduPUNXpod! Thanks so much for tuning in and I'll see you next week! Which, due to the 4th of July falling on a Tuesday, I will release next week's episode on Wednesday, July 5th! Be well and be safe! Up the punx! Let's get to work.

Ipswich, Suffolk natives Basement are all about breaking down barriers. Across three studio albums, they've blended their love of second-wave emo, grunge, alternative rock and punk rock into some of the sharpest rock music to emerge from the UK in the 2010s. Then, there's also the literal aspect of things - at one of the band's shows, the surge of the crowd was so powerful that the crowd barrier caved in. This is the kind of passionate response that has come to define Basement's live show - screamed lyrics, high-flying stagedives and non-stop energy, even during the slow songs. Roughly an hour before doors opened for their sell-out Sydney show at the Factory Theatre, vocalist Andrew Fisher and bassist Duncan Stewart shared stories from across the pond - kicking around in hardcore bands, life after Basement and their ascent to becoming the biggest little band in the world. Their union may have been one of pure circumstance and coincidence, but these days Modern Baseball are the four best friends that anyone could have. Over the course of three albums and just a few years, the band have become a mouthpiece for the awkward, the disenfranchised and the anxious through their motor-mouthed, anthemic pop-punk. In April, the band finally arrived in Australia after having to unfortunately cancel their September tour plans. In the aftermath of a completely sold-out run, we spoke with vocalist/guitarist Jake Ewald and drummer Sean Huber about growing up, getting in the van and going global. Modern Baseball's third album, Holy Ghost, is out now via Run for Cover Records and distributed in Australia via Cooking Vinyl Australia. In Episode 42, we sit down with Bobby Barnett, the vocalist and guitarist of Scranton/Philadelphia punk band Captain, We’re Sinking, and talk about his expectations for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” why he enjoys the prequels as well as the original trilogy, and we have him recite the lyrics to his band’s epic “Star Wars” rap that few people have ever heard. Then we get into how he started in music, including his ska roots; embarrassing early recordings and demos that Ben Walsh from Tigers Jaw still holds onto; why the challenging recording of “The Future Is Cancelled” almost ended the band and what saved them; how Captain, We’re Sinking’s next album is coming along with the support of Run for Cover Records; the history and importance of the annual NEPA Holiday Show and the arts program it raises money for; why he believes the Scranton music scene has produced so many successful bands and the ups and downs of the local scene; enjoying his work as a substitute teacher, except when kids recognize him from his band; the worst and most ridiculous shows he has ever played; his family’s private talent shows, competitiveness, and cool younger cousin; and joining his brother Greg Barnett (vocalist and guitarist of The Menzingers) for their first-ever acoustic tour in the U.K. next year. In The Last Word segment, we talk about the sad closing of 3 Guys and a Beer’d Brewing Company and why people should share more positive than negative stories through social media. Captain, We’re Sinking will perform with The Menzingers, Tigers Jaw, Three Man Cannon, Petal, and The SW!MS at the NEPA Holiday Show this Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Scranton Cultural Center (420 N. Washington Ave., Scranton). Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Professionally recorded every Monday at The Stude in TwentyFiveEight Studios in Scranton and released exclusively on nepascene.com every Tuesday, the NEPA Scene Podcast is a free supplement to the website, expanding on the arts and entertainment stories covered on the site and going beyond them to discuss other news and entertainment topics. Each week, the unedited and uncensored podcast features Rich Howells, NEPA Scene founder and editor; Mark Dennebaum, president and owner of TwentyFiveEight Studios; and Lauren Quirolgico, commercial and content strategist at Lavelle Strategy Group and editor at TwentyFiveEight. Every episode streams on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and nepascene.com.

This episode was a long time coming but our schedules finally matched up and I was able to chat with Jeff Casazza, the owner of Run For Cover Records. We get in depth about failing miserably at the beginning of the label, being a "boss" and how the internet played a huge part in Jeff's upbringing. Jeff was very forthcoming in his answers and it was a real pleasure to shed some light on areas of the label that often get overlooked. This week Jason and Drew talk to Tom Chiari from Run for Cover Records and Hostage Calm about the unique position of helping run a record label while also being a musician.
Cover Records was the practice of taking a great song by black or country artists and making it safe and enjoyable for the mostly white record buying public.
