Welcome to our girlie era! We're starting the week off by talking through all our recent girlie purchases and favourite products because we do not gatekeep in this household. We discuss the very public and messy breakup between Zach Bryan and Brianna LaPaglia (fka Brianna Chickenfry), with Caitlin sharing all the drama from the snark thread over the past 18 months, including a questionable timeline on their relationship. As we gear up for the Love is Blind season 7 reunion, we recap the wedding episode aka the heartbreaking scene between Marissa and Ramses that made us want to fight Ramses. This week, Caitlin watched Netflix's latest true crime documentary series, This is the Zodiac Speaking—a family searching for answers shares clues and eye-opening testimonies about the prime suspect in the Zodiac murders. In the spirit of true crime and thrillers, we both read Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka—a harrowing story about a man on death row. Our next read: Funny Story by Emily Henry.
Hey book lovers, welcome back to Stories in Two!

In this April led episode the Book Eaters discuss the Edgar award-winning novel Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka. April and Michele imbibe the classic cocktail Suffering Bastard as they discuss what butters their bread about the New York Times Best Crime Novel of the Year. No book is perfect so they will also discuss what they didn't like about the novel and if they would throw the baby out with the bath water. Come for the spoiler-heavy review of the national best-selling novel but stay for the drunken history that follows about the legendary storyteller and poet Edgar Allan Poe.

And now our first bookclub meeting shall be in session. We are discussing Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka and as such, this will be full of spoilers and opinions, questions and ponderings, and probably some spontaneous segues. Join us and invite a friend or two! Our next book is: The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
Danya Kukafka is the author of the nationally bestselling novels Notes on an Execution and Girl in Snow. Her books have been reviewed favorably in outlets like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, and have been translated into over a dozen languages worldwide. Notes on an Execution recently won the Edgar Award for Best Novel, and is currently in development as a feature film. Danya works as a literary agent with Trellis Literary Management. Danya joined Barbara DeMarco-Barrett to talk about using a time lock, keeping a process journal, point of view, how being an agent affects her own writing, genres and categories, and much more. For more information on Writers on Writing and additional writing tips, visit our Patreon page. To listen to past interviews, visit our website. This week, we chat to Danya Kukafka. Her first debut, 'Girl in the Snow', was released in 2017 and was extremely successful. It was a national bestseller, translated in many languages, and then the pressure came. The pressure of that difficult second book... how do you follow up on success?Danya started to write furiously, and along came 'Notes on an Execution'. It tells the story of Ansel Packer, who is scheduled to die in twelve hours. He knows what he's done, and now awaits execution, the same chilling fate he forced on those girls, years ago. But Ansel doesn't want to die; he wants to be celebrated, understood. Through a kaleidoscope of women--a mother, a sister, a homicide detective--we learn the story of Ansel's life.We talk about why her writing routine has changed since that book, how she's hopefully made it calmer and healthier. You can hear about her first idea for the story and how it was mostly the feeling of the plot rather than all the details that became clear. We chat through her process journal, how working in publishing helps her write, and why what she thinks will happen in the book rarely comes true.Get 10% of Plottr, at go.plottr.com/routineSupport the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Abby's got notes on the premiere ep of The Last of Us on HBO, the silly fun of The Traitors on Peacock, and the riveting novel Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka. Then she's joined by her friend Amber Katz to discuss S2 of the Netflix show Ginny & Georgia, which is somehow a mix of Gilmore Girls, My So-Called Life, Mermaids, Hart of Dixie, and Dexter?!? They also get into the new Bernie Madoff docuseries on Netflix, some initial thoughts on Prince Harry's Spare, and more.Subscribe to the newsletter: https://wehavenotes.substack.comAnd Amber's Things I Buy as a Civilian: https://amber.substack.com

On this episode, I talk to Danya Kukafka about her stunning new novel Notes on an Execution. You can also watch the episode on YouTubeAuthor LinksInstagramGoodreadsWebsiteCheck out the book hereNotes on an Execution SynopsisAnsel Packer is scheduled to die in twelve hours. He knows what he's done, and now awaits execution, the same chilling fate he forced on those girls, years ago. But Ansel doesn't want to die; he wants to be celebrated, understood. Through a kaleidoscope of women—a mother, a sister, a homicide detective—we learn the story of Ansel's life. We meet his mother, Lavender, a seventeen-year-old girl pushed to desperation; Hazel, twin sister to Ansel's wife, inseparable since birth, forced to watch helplessly as her sister's relationship threatens to devour them all; and finally, Saffy, the detective hot on his trail, who has devoted herself to bringing bad men to justice but struggles to see her own life clearly. As the clock ticks down, these three women sift through the choices that culminate in tragedy, exploring the rippling fissures that such destruction inevitably leaves in its wake. Blending breathtaking suspense with astonishing empathy, Notes on an Execution presents a chilling portrait of womanhood as it simultaneously unravels the familiar narrative of the American serial killer, interrogating our system of justice and our cultural obsession with crime stories, asking readers to consider the false promise of looking for meaning in the psyches of violent men.
Welcome to Open Form, a new weekly film podcast hosted by award-winning writer Mychal Denzel Smith. Each week, a different author chooses a movie: a movie they love, a movie they hate, a movie they hate to love. Something nostalgic from their childhood. A brand-new obsession. Something they've been dying to talk about for ages and their friends are constantly annoyed by them bringing it up. In this episode, Mychal talks to Danya Kukafka (Notes on an Execution and Girl in Snow) about the 2002 film Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Cliff Robertson, and Rosemary Harris. Danya Kukafka is the bestselling author of the novel Girl in Snow and is currently at work on another book. In this episode we talk a lot about writing, and the whole process of publishing a book. We dive into the differences between writing long form fiction vs. non-fiction, what drew her towards fiction in particular, and she shares how her first published novel came to be. Some other themes we cover include resisting comparison, nostalgia, criticism, and how she deals with negative feedback as a writer. If you are an author or aspiring writer I think you’ll get a lot out of this episode. And if you’re an artist of any kind you’ll find a lot of gems here. I hope you enjoy! The Riff Raff Podcast: Writers community | Debut authors | Getting published
The Riff Raff talk to Danya Kukafka about how her debut 'Girl in Snow', creating richly drawn characters; the importance of research in establishing backstory, and why the crucial thing for aspiring writers is to just keep going. Music by: www.bensound.com
Hey there word nerds! Today I have the pleasure of chatting with author Danya Kukafka on the show! Danya’s stunning debut novel, Girl in Snow, received rave reviews right out of the gate from masters of the thriller genre like Paula Hawkins and Lee Child. This achievement is made even more remarkable when you consider that Danya is only 25 years old! After reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Virgin Suicides, Danya became fascinated by unstable teens in voyeuristic communities. She set out to explore the idea of what would happen if you had a teenage boy who truly doesn’t know if he’s killed someone. How could the reader find empathy for him? Listen in as we tackle this question and the even bigger question of deciding where the line between YA and adult lies as we discuss Girl in Snow. In this episode Danya and I discuss: Adult or YA? Deciding which way is right for your story. Writing teenage characters that feel real. Knowing when to choose a multiple point of view and how to do it right. Dealing with the publishing world as an editor and an author. How to win the comparison game by sticking to your own writing path. Plus, Danya’s #1 tip for writers.
