Welcome back to Transmissions. This week on the show, which brings our 2023 season to a close, we are joined by Matt Werth of RVNG to discuss the life and multi-dimensional sound worlds of Pauline Anna Strom. This month, the label released Echoes, Spaces, Lines, which collects the first three albums from the Bay Area synthesist and composer, including Trans-Millenia Consort, Plot Zero, and Spectre, as well as Oceans of Time, an unreleased record included in the box set for the first time. An energy worker, reptile enthusiast, and imagination specialist, Anna Strom's work continues to gleam after her passing in 2020. Home to releases by Sensations Fix, Craig Leon, Holly Herndon, K Leimer, just to name a few favorites, among many more, RVNG is one of the most exciting reissue slash new music labels going, and it was a real treat to connect with Werth to discuss his time with Pauline and her unique and singular musical path. Oregon joined a number of states last summer in allowing college athletes to be compensated by companies for their name, image and likeness (NIL). Now, high school athletes can do the same — the Oregon School Activities Association released new guidance last month detailing how students can approach and benefit from NIL deals. OSAA executive director Peter Weber joins us to talk about what went into that decision. We'll also hear from University of Oregon sports business instructor Craig Leon about trends in the collegiate NIL landscape over the last year.

On this episode, we're excited to share our interview with Craig Leon! While possibly best known for producing Suicide, Blondie, and The Ramones, he is also an accomplished experimental musician with his album Nommos released by John Fahey's label Takoma in 1981. We discuss Craig's experiences in the NYC punk scene, his ongoing extraterrestrial inspirations, and other lesser known releases such as his collaboration with Arthur Brown.
Two years ago I did a mix called "A Distant Pulse" which featured a lot of tribal ambient sounds. I've been meaning to do a sequel and now it's here with "A Rhythmic Passage." What finally got the ball rolling for a new mix is a new album from Louigi Verona called "Nocturnal Creatures." Recommended by my ambient collaborator, Paul Asbury Seaman, the album is similar to classic Steve Roach tribal albums. But the drum sound is huge with deep, booming low end to shake your speakers and rattle the windows. Add in some drones and subtle arpeggiated electronics and you've got an excellent album. You can find it here... https://louigi.bandcamp.com/album/nocturnal-creatures The rest of the mix is a collection of old(Tibbetts, Craig Leon, Biosphere) and new(Spheruleus, Pike, Keszler, Kilchhofer, Selman) tunes. Enjoy the rhythms. Cheers!
This week we return to our coverage from Moogfest with not one but two fantastic conversations with brilliant minds that helped discover some of the most exciting musical voices of the last few decades. First up is Daniel Miller, musician, producer, and founder of Mute Records, the label that brought the world Depeche Mode, Erasure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and so many others. Daniel and host Lior Phillips chat about seeing his first concerts, buying his first Korg 700s, and his exploration of the UK music scene in the late '70s and early '80s. After that, Lior chats with Craig Leon, a man who has been at the intersection of countless musical moments in the US since helping to discover seminal punk and no wave bands like The Ramones, Suicide, and Talking Heads. Lior sat down with Craig and his partner, psych/folk/country musician Cassell Webb, to talk about Craig's time in CBGB's and Max's Kansas City and his work with Pavorotti, Cassell's first-hand experience with Buddy Holly, and so much more. Head here for more on Mute Records. Head here for more info on Craig Leon and Cassell Webb's new record, Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 2: The Canon. Season 2.5, Episode 12. SPOT THE BURP! There is a burp hidden on this week's Safe As Milk preview episode, so if you can find it, comment on the All Yesterday's Parties Facebook page, or tweet us at @ayppodcast with the precise minute at second of the burp! This week, our indomitable heroes gather to discuss Karen Gwyer, Craig Leon & Martin Rev, and Jeff Mills & Tony Allen. There is also some wonderment at the way some artists' work is described on the Safe As Milk website, Gordon gets a well-known phrase just wrong enough to make everyone wince, and last week's Artist Choice experiment gets another go. Will it be successful? Listen and find out. Tony talks about what Olympians should do after the games THE OLYMPICS DRIVE athletes to get ever faster, higher, and stronger, to quote its Latin motto: “Citius, altius, fortius.” But while the Games show athletes at the peak of human potential, it rarely does much for their earning potential. Every Olympiad, it seems, sees a new crop of athletes become celebrities, their names and faces recognized by millions. Reaching that point requires staggering amounts of time, focus, and discipline with money. “You have to throw everything into it, and it becomes a kind of obsession,” says Craig Leon of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon. Yet it brings little wealth. “For a lot of Olympic athletes, there isn’t a lot of money to be made,” he says. In fact, the Olympics can hurt an athlete’s earning power. www.Tonyjeffries.com
