#74: [Inside the Mind] Dr. Joseph Parent: Unconditional Confidence, Remaining on the Offensive, and How to Go Low with the PAR Method In this powerful and enlightening episode of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Joseph Parent, author of Zen Golf and one of the most respected minds in golf psychology.  Together, we break down the mental collapse Rory McIlroy experienced at Augusta, why players in the lead shift from offensive to defensive mindsets, and how to overcome the urge to “protect” a lead that doesn't actually exist. Dr. Parent unpacks the roots of time-traveling thoughts, teaches how to return to presence with the “Love the Way It Leaves” mindset, and shares his proven PAR method: Preparation, Action, and Response to Results.  In today's episode, you'll learn: Why shifting from offensive to defensive play derails your round How “protecting a lead” is a mental trap What real focus and commitment look like on a shot How to let go of the past (and future) and return to presence Why most players collapse in Amen Corner — and how to prevent it The PAR method to respond to good and bad shots alike How to build unconditional confidence regardless of current performance Whether you're a 20 handicap or chasing scratch, this episode will radically shift how you view confidence, pressure, and progress. Get your pencils ready and start listening.  P.S. Curious to learn more about the results my clients are experiencing and what they say about working with me? Read more here. Treat each one with the same intention. Offense wins in golf. Shifting to “protect” a score leads to tentative swings and poor decisions. Commitment is clarity. A vague shot plan leads to vague swings. Clear images = clear results. Most bad shots stem from mental interference, not swing flaws — especially under pressure. Return to presence by letting go. Your body is always here. It's your mind that time travels. “Love the way it leaves.” Focus on your process, not the outcome. Unconditional confidence means trusting your skills even when results aren't there yet. Key Quotes: “You're not holding the lead. You're just holding onto an idea that doesn't exist yet.” “Golfers say, ‘If I can just par in…' — that's when the mind shifts into protection mode and everything tightens.” “A vague image produces a vague swing. Clarity of image is clarity of action.” “If you're not present on 15, your body's already in the bar on 19.” “You never calm up. You calm down. So stop trying to be up-tight and start getting down-settled.” “Focus on loving the way it leaves. That's all you can control.” “When you're out of your own way, your true skill level shows up.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Rory McIlroy's Performance at the Masters 09:07: The Defensive Mindset in Golf 14:01: Maintaining an Offensive Mindset 19:00: Being Present in the Moment 23:09: Caveman Lessons: The Roots of Fear and Awareness 26:04: The PAR Approach: Preparation, Action, and Response 30:20: Focusing on Process Over Outcome 32:33: Understanding Unconditional Confidence 35:15: Cultivating Unconditional Confidence 38:41: Practicing Mindfulness Off the Course 42:30: Common Misconceptions About Mindfulness 44:32: The Billboard Message: Take Golf Seriously, Not Yourself 45:37: Patience and Humor in the Journey to Improvement

We got the chance in our time together to look at the power of PERSPECTIVE How a slight shift in perspective can have a BIG effect on your game Joe described the humbling experience recently of hosting mindfulness sessions for people actually living in the Ukraine and the way they are manging to handle their lives in the most horrendous of conditions. How much do we take for granted in our own lives? In what way does this cross over to our golf? The dramatic impact of self talk Changing the definition of a ‘good shot' Why the perception of what makes a ‘good day' can make us so unhappy What perspective do we have on poor shots? How do we view the opportunity to play? What about the golf course itself? Do we view the course as an invitation to experience the possibility of expressing our skills or do we see the course as being something of a ‘war zone' where are own sense of self is brought into question? How does the golf course want to RECEIVE your shots? The ‘don't know' mindset Be CURIOIUS instead of afraid The Zen of better putting How you can make EVERY putt Why it is so important to ‘begin with the end in mind' The ultimate ATTITUDE to bring to your putting ‘Hit it where the putter is pointing'Love the way the ball leaves the putter LEARNING from every putt A really tremendous conversation with a legendary performance coach. This Friday episode begins with some early reaction to the U.S. Women's Open, where Mina Harigae made nine birdies in her opening round. This prompted the usual wails about fairways too wide and rough too thin, which leads to another setup philosophy discussion. Precision Pro Flashback Friday focuses on a Pine Needles U.S. Open of past as well as the larger theme on ascendant youths in championship women's golf. A news roundup touches on Jerry Foltz going to LIV as a broadcaster, Texas winning the national title, and these wild suspended-in-the-sky seats at the Canadian Open.

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly newspaper column.Wine and sports 6-1-2022In the antediluvian 20th century, you likely associated beer with sporting events and athletes. Today, in the bright, shining enlightenment of the 21st century, wine can claim its spot alongside beer as a sports libation. Beer guzzlers would demure—likely with a belch—but they would be wrong.Major sports venues have upgraded both their food and drink offerings. Wine is available by the cup and can. Higher-end wines are available by the bottle in luxury suites.Several major sports pros are associated with wine, and not just by slapping their name on a label. Basketball superstar Yao Ming is actively involved in Yao Family Wines. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has been a part-owner of the Oregon-based A to Z Wineworks since 2006.Yao Ming in his fermentation roomFootball stars and coaches are winery owners. Drew Bledsoe owns Doubleback Cellars, Bledsoe Family Wines, and Bledsoe-McDaniels. John Elway owns 7Cellars. Former NFL quarterbacks Dan Marino and Damon Huard own Passing Time. Super Bowl-winning coach Dick Vermeil owns Vermeil Wines. He sources grapes from a vineyard his grandfather picked as a vineyard laborer.Charles Woodson at his wineryFormer Oakland Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson co-owns Intercept and TwentyFour by Charles Woodson. TwentyFour is high-end Napa; Intercept is a more accessible line of Paso Robles wines.Race car driver Kevin Buckler—a 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, plus another 99 professional victories—owns Adobe Road. As you might imagine, his wines have a racing tie: The 24, Shift, Redline, Apex.Dusty Baker, Greg Vaughn, and Tom Seaver are just some baseball star winery owners. Golf star winery owners include Ernie Els, Cristie Kerr, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam, Jan Stephenson, and Nick Faldo.Obviously, there are different motivations, but there is one somewhat general theme. Athletes understand vintage. Each year challenges you to make the most of what nature and happenstance present to you. Everything may go right, things may go wrong. In sports, in winemaking.Tasting notes:• A to Z Wineworks Bubbles Oregon Rosé Wine: Crisp, creamy with good acidity. Fun and whimsy here. Brendan tries to talk himself into the curse being still alive because of a non-continental U.S. win and many other illogical contortions about a fake curse. The two discuss the weekend that was at Mayakoba, including the soft course, Hovland’s admittance that he’s usually poor under pressure, Finaue’s flop, and JT’s Sunday stuck in neutral. Then they get to the early departures and 2020 ends of Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka, debating who had the more disappointing year between the two (judged against different standards, of course). Angela Stanford’s work on the LPGA is praised against the backdrop of a game, on all tours, that tends to favor the younger player. Cristie Kerr’s cart crash is also mentioned. The potential for Collin Morikawa to win the Race to Dubai, despite not yet playing on the European Tour, is discussed and panned. They wrap with news, which is mostly an appreciation segment on Peter Alliss, who died over the weekend.

Cristie Kerr discovered golf at the age of eight growing up in Florida. She played on her high school’s boys team and by her late teens went pro, becoming one of the most successful players in LPGA history. Bringing the same drive she has in golf, Kerr has started two wine brands: the first one, Curvature, which raised funds for breast cancer research, and her latest with winemaker Helen Keplinger is Kerr Cellars.
