Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly newspaper column.Wine and sports 6-1-2022In the antediluvian 20th century, you likely associated beer with sporting events and athletes. Today, in the bright, shining enlightenment of the 21st century, wine can claim its spot alongside beer as a sports libation. Beer guzzlers would demure—likely with a belch—but they would be wrong.Major sports venues have upgraded both their food and drink offerings. Wine is available by the cup and can. Higher-end wines are available by the bottle in luxury suites.Several major sports pros are associated with wine, and not just by slapping their name on a label. Basketball superstar Yao Ming is actively involved in Yao Family Wines. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has been a part-owner of the Oregon-based A to Z Wineworks since 2006.Yao Ming in his fermentation roomFootball stars and coaches are winery owners. Drew Bledsoe owns Doubleback Cellars, Bledsoe Family Wines, and Bledsoe-McDaniels. John Elway owns 7Cellars. Former NFL quarterbacks Dan Marino and Damon Huard own Passing Time. Super Bowl-winning coach Dick Vermeil owns Vermeil Wines. He sources grapes from a vineyard his grandfather picked as a vineyard laborer.Charles Woodson at his wineryFormer Oakland Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson co-owns Intercept and TwentyFour by Charles Woodson. TwentyFour is high-end Napa; Intercept is a more accessible line of Paso Robles wines.Race car driver Kevin Buckler—a 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, plus another 99 professional victories—owns Adobe Road. As you might imagine, his wines have a racing tie: The 24, Shift, Redline, Apex.Dusty Baker, Greg Vaughn, and Tom Seaver are just some baseball star winery owners. Golf star winery owners include Ernie Els, Cristie Kerr, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam, Jan Stephenson, and Nick Faldo.Obviously, there are different motivations, but there is one somewhat general theme. Athletes understand vintage. Each year challenges you to make the most of what nature and happenstance present to you. Everything may go right, things may go wrong. In sports, in winemaking.Tasting notes:• A to Z Wineworks Bubbles Oregon Rosé Wine: Crisp, creamy with good acidity. Fun and whimsy here. Damon Huard: Passing TimeIf there is one thing the Huard family knows, it's quarterback play! Born in Yakima, Washington and raised in Puyallup, Damon Huard was one of three brothers (Brock and Luke) who played Division I college football, with both Damon and Brock also enjoying NFL careers. Although he finished college as the Washington Huskies' all-time passing leader, Huard went undrafted in 1996, eventually signing with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent. Huard was waived in training camp and spent the entire year out of football before Jimmy Johnson brought him to South Florida and his professional football journey would truly begin. In The Tank, Damon explains what it was like to have played with both Dan Marino and Tom Brady, provides the amazing details surrounding his “coming out party” after replacing Marino mid-game in a thrilling come-from-behind victory against the New England Patriots, reveals the real story behind Olindo Mare's 1999 Pro Bowl season, and discusses the quarterback competition with Jay Fiedler prior to 2000. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep A two-sport athlete at Dartmouth College, Jay Fiedler set school records for touchdown passes (58), passing yards (6,684), and total offense (7,249) with the Ivy League program while receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering. His National Football League journey didn't start quite as smoothly, however, with a five-year quest featuring stints with four different NFL teams, a stop in NFL Europe, and a coaching gig at Hofstra University before signing with the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2000 season. Fiedler battled Damon Huard for the starting quarterback position and ultimately became the successor to Dolphins icon, Dan Marino. Helping to lead the Fins to back-to-back 11-5 seasons in his first two years under center, Fiedler was 36-17 in his first four years with the club. He is also the last Dolphins starting quarterback to win a playoff game. In The Tank, Jay details his unlikely path to Miami, recalls the talented Dolphins squad of the early 2000s, and sheds some light on working with then, and current, offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey. He also shares some of the benefits of being a Jewish quarterback in Miami and reveals his little known connection to current Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores.

Sam Huard wanted to set the record straight: he's not just a steak-eater nowadays. In a wide-ranging interview with Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds, the Kennedy Catholic quarterback makes it known that he's open to whatever is put on the dinner table. But that's just the peas and carrots. When it comes to the meat of the interview, Grinolds asked Huard about his take on the ratings and rankings that come out and whether or not the UW-bound Huard ever really pays attention to the adulation. He also talked about playing at a high level from an early age and growing up the son of a former NFL quarterback, Damon Huard, as well as the influence of another left-hander in the family, his uncle Brock. Oh, and Brock also played quarterback at Washington and the NFL. Huard was asked about the relationship he's built with Dan Marino, who is a co-owner of Passing Time Winery with Sam's Dad, as well as the relationships he's built with some of the top football and basketball prospects growing up through the Seattle AAU basketball community. They talked about the recruiting process, starting with the first offer he ever got, from Nevada, as well as his early decision to verbally commit to Washington shortly after getting offered. Huard also talked about his daily routine right now in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, including his off-field preparations, as well as his relationship with Tracy Ford and Ford Sports Performance. The two also talked about the moment when Chris Petersen stepped down as Washington's head coach, and how that could have impacted his decision to play for UW. Huard also talks about the conversations he's had with new UW Head Coach Jimmy Lake, and first-year offensive coordinator John Donovan. Finally, Huard talked about the steps he still needs to take at Kennedy Catholic before jumping to the next level with the Huskies, as well as his role as the unofficial ringleader of Washington's 2021 recruiting efforts. He even throws out a name to watch, and also talks about the 'greatest player he's ever seen in his life'. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
