If you think poetry isn't your thing, spend some time with David Keplinger. David is the author of eight books of poetry and a professor at American University. We got to know one another through a humanities workgroup that was looking at how curiosity might be more effectively woven into the fabric of life at AU. He was a warm and profoundly thoughtful participant in the group, one of my favorites. His new book, Ice, starts with the melting permafrost in Siberia, which has begun to reveal the bodies of 40,000 year old animals, from the last Ice Age. The poems about frozen animals then segue into poems about our own bodies under the “ice of forgetting”—and how the light of poetry, for him, melted that ice away and helped him remember. What happens when science, spirituality and poetry weave together? We speak with heralded poet David Keplinger about his newest poetry collection, Ice, which he playfully describes as “poetry via the Pleistocene.” The book, and our conversation, explores emergence–the emergence of Ice Age animals once preserved in ice and the emergence of feelings and old versions of the self as the heart melts with age and self-compassion. We talk about how creative practice can help us move from “stuckness to spontaneity” and how it is creativity helps us “remember we are here.”David Keplinger is the director of the MFA Program at American University, recipient of two NEA fellowships, the Colorado Book Award, the TS Eliot Award (selected by Mary Oliver), the Cavafy Prize (selected by Ilya Kaminsky), the Rilke Prize, and the Emily Dickinson Award from the Poetry Society of America. He's a longtime translator of Büchner Preis winning German poet Jan Wagner. His new poetry book is called Ice, which combines a concern for climate change with a metaphor for inner light. Biography Susan is the founder of Force of Nature, a performance marketing and PE shop. Beyond starting stuff, Susan loves to chase wind and waves in Maui, or play with gravity in Olympic Valley, CA where she lives with her hubby Mark, and two Kiddos, Iver and Aysa. About Susan Coelius Keplinger Susan Coelius Keplinger is a tour de force in the realm of performance marketing. She is the founder of Force of Nature, a premier performance marketing and PE firm, laser-focused on transforming businesses through the potent amalgamation of data-driven strategies and compelling storytelling. When it comes to the world of e-commerce, the name Etsy has become pretty much synonymous with small businesses, especially in terms of hand-made products and independently-crafted gifts. Since its foundation in 2005, the platform has changed a great deal on its own terms but has also kept pace with the shifting landscape of the internet, the rise (and dominance) of social media, and the general advances in digital tech.  For all these reasons, Etsy remains an invaluable tool in the selling kit of almost any small product business, whether you're an established business owner or just starting out, and in today's episode of The Resilient Retail Game Plan I speak to seasoned Etsy seller and expert, Lauren Keplinger, about how to make the most out of the platform.  An active seller since 2012, Lauren's success with her monogrammed baby products has seen her go on to help businesses with their Etsy performance whilst helping them maintain a healthy work/life balance. In this podcast, we discuss the benefits of Etsy's built-in traffic and brand name recognition, the core differences between the platform's international markets and the expectations from customers on the visual presentation of your products. We also drill down into what Lauren has coined ‘Hyper Narrow Markets' and debate the need for highly-specific products lines in a crowded and competitive marketplace. In this episode, Maureen interviews Michael Keplinger of SmashBrand on the role that packaging plays in marketing, how to stand out in a saturated market, and why building a strong brand is foundational to having great packaging. With online shopping, things are changing.  However, some products will always be on the shelf.  With those products, like food items, packaging has to do almost all the work.  Until a brand becomes more well-known, it's up to packaging to attract consumers in the store. In eCommerce, packaging still has a huge focus.  You're so limited on what you can put on packaging that you have to focus on what is important.  When you search online, the first thing you see is the front of the product.  Regardless of product or category, every product needs engaging packaging. Michael takes a scientific approach to consumer marketing at Smash Brand, and then this data is married with the creative to create packaging that connects with consumers. Michael & SmashBrand helps brand managers confidently put products on the shelf that sell. Combining branding and design expertise with consumer insights at multiple points throughout our process, we create brands that win customers, not just awards. An idea company, SmashBrand designs packaging with strategy, style and substance, integrating statistically validated consumer testing into the design process. Product managers and CMOs come to us for product innovation, packaging design, brand strategy, branding and consumer testing. Our data-first process creates consistent results for clients using real insights from actual consumers. I lead strategy and research, working with clients like Kraft Heinz, Duracell, 7-Eleven, and PayPal to determine through analytical rigor and testing how to best optimize the art and message on the physical product. Our unique process of iterative testing integrated into our design process reduces a ton of risk and allows brands to make the bold moves necessary to win in the market. My two decades of engineering, entrepreneurism, and business ownership led to a very unique viewpoint and reinforced a problem-solving approach to everything we do. After earning a bachelor's degree in computer engineering, I launched and grew several globally distributed multi-million-dollar CPG brands. In 2007, I went back to school and unexpectedly gravitated towards consumer psychology, which gave me the insight to discern my consumer product experience through the broader lens of consumer research and marketing and build market-winning brand strategies. Packaging must connect deeply with consumers and still convey the strategic vision of the brand. I've honed an ability to see ideas through the eyes of the consumer and anticipate how they're going to react to the product or its message. I piece together seemingly unrelated pieces—it's the place where real innovation and opportunity collide. https://www.smashbrand.com/

James adds, "It's so delicious ... and then You have this really nice acidity at the end, it's almost like an Italian wine, with a balsamic character to it. That's crazy."Helen notes that the Grace Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018 is 100% cabernet and that they've refined their pickings for the grapes, resulting in only 150 cases produced for the 2018, and 100 cases for 2019. "I think the '18 is gorgeous, but the '18 is all upper block [of the property]," she says. "The upper block contains rocky, red volcanic soils and the vines there face east. Their struggle against the east produces an intense mineral, well-structured, red-fruit character with an aromatic herbal profile."

Whether you’re working with digital products or physical items, packaging matters. In fact, your packaging may be the only interaction a customer has with your brand, so it’s important to make it count. But where do you start? This week we sat down with Michael Keplinger, Director of Strategy and Managing Partner at SmashBrand, to learn more about how his company helps clients optimize their packaging through a strategic, data-driven process. Michael’s unique background in engineering and consumer psychology helped him design a specialized approach to A/B testing that has helped drive sales for a variety of brands both on the shelves and online.  What we discussed: - Why A/B testing is essential, and why it’s worth the investment - The main objectives of packaging, and why it’s important to get it right - The key factors to measure when undertaking A/B testing - How A/B testing a physical product compares to A/B testing a digital one - The SmashBrand approach to A/B testing and why it’s effective - Real-life examples of A/B testing and its impact on brand sales

Your brand may be important, but when it comes to real life, a lot of what gets your product off the shelf is your packaging. You can either be strategic about it or leave everything to chance. If you don’t want to do the latter, then you definitely have to start investing in packaging more than you’re probably doing now. As we have repeatedly stressed in this podcast, packaging is not a DIY process. You need to work with someone who really knows what they’re doing and will help you really stand out above the noise. Joining Timothy Bush for this episode is one such person, Michael Keplinger, Director of Strategy at SmashBrand, a brand consulting company that designs, tests and optimizes brands and products with real consumers in one integrated process. “The marketplace has changed so much—there are so many brands on the retail shelf—the packaging is all there is. We turn the traditional brand development world upside down.” As a partner and leader of the research team at brand strategy firm SmashBrand, Michael Keplinger has a bold new approach for inventing and reinventing CPG brands. We discussed all of this and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Michael Keplinger Michael Keplinger is a partner at SmashBrand, an agile brand strategy agency for consumer packaged goods that specializes in a complete approach to market research, product design, and testing. After earning a degree and early career in computer engineering, Michael’s entrepreneurial drive took hold and he soon found himself developing market strategies for his own consumer product business. There, he quickly found a talent for connecting seemingly unrelated dots to discover room for innovation and opportunity. At SmashBrand, Michael makes ample use of his philosophy regarding consumer products, that the key to success is about seeing everything from the eyes of the consumer and anticipating how they will react to a product or message. Michael currently leads SmashBrand’s research team to develop strategies for clients and to optimize various aspects of branding and packaging through testing. This best-foot forward approach to optimizing from a consumer perspective is likely the single biggest impact on marketing any brand can do, and over the past decade, he has developed an agile methodology and proven platform for consumer testing and integrated it directly into SmashBrand’s entire process. Episode Highlights What led this computer engineer to branding work? I’m always fascinated at what’s led someone to work in branding. As a computer engineering grad and successful entrepreneur, he first found his way back to business school. Once there, he fell in love with the science of consumer behavior, which would mold his approach at SmashBrand. The packaging recipe for success. “Packaging has to do a lot of things rather quickly.” This requires a scientific mix and balance of words, visuals, spatial elements, and white space. You also have to test different ideas. “Testing is nothing new. Without the ability to test you’re left with subjective opinion.” What do you do with a stagnant CPG brand or category? This represents a lot of Michael’s work. A solid first step is making sure it doesn’t become stagnant in the first place. “What becomes the new norm is incremental change. You have to continue to refresh to maintain your brand positioning.” If you’re constantly changing—even a little bit—change itself becomes less risky over time. What brand has made Michael smile recently? Though they’ve experienced a tumultuous couple of years, Michael shared why Uber is brand that makes him smile. “They play a huge role in transportation in our society. They’re (re)building a brand around why they exist.” To learn more, check out the SmashBrand website and connect with Michael on LinkedIn. When it comes to IT modernization, federal agencies commonly face three central challenges: integrating a myriad of systems, rationalizing applications and winning over each system owner to support agencywide infrastructure changes. Those challenges often come to a head when trying to cultivate an agile and secure DevSecOps process. One agency that has demonstrated surprising success in overcoming those challenges — in the face of daunting deadlines — is the U.S. Census Bureau. This was this the first time the Census Bureau attempted to collect responses via the internet.
