In this mini-episode, DaJuan Johnson and I discuss the WGA Writer's Strike and the possibility of a SAG-AFTRA strike as SAG heads into negotiations in June. We have a full sit-down talk coming, but we wanted to share this segment early because we believe it could help energize the acting community ahead of the SAG Strike vote. We get really transparent about our paychecks, the importance of actors receiving residuals, and why we believe the strike is necessary to continue doing what we love while also being able to pay our bills. We believe that when we stand united as a group, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. Vote YES to the 2023 SAG Strike Authorization Vote for TV/Theatrical/Streaming contract negotiations! You'll recognize DaJuan Johnson from hits like Narcos, Grey's Anatomy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and SEVEN seasons of Bosch (just to name a few!), I couldn't think of anyone better to have a conversation all about confidence and thinking bigger! DaJuan is a coach who helps actors shift their mindset to find clarity, so they can push through uncertainty and take focused action to reach their dreams. In today's episode, Dajuan and I discuss what thinking bigger actually means and the actionable ways to develop a no-fail mindset. We discuss why it is crucial to step into this bigger mindset so you can show up and do your best work as an actor (or any type of creative!). DaJuan exposes the lie of the billing hierarchy and how it prevents us from feeling like we're not enough as artists. He breaks down the tough, internal desperation actors have that keeps us small and stops us from our full artistic capabilities. At times, a creative career can feel like you're on the outside looking in with very little validation – enter DaJuan who provides tons of reassurance while he exposes the uncomfortable truth of how your mindset gets in your way (or makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE!). Despite DaJuan's decorated credentials, he reminds all actors that he isn't extraordinary. At the end of the day, the only thing he has that you might not have is just more tools in his toolbox. This episode is your chance to learn, grow, and gain the mindset and confidence you need to focus on what's in your control and let go of the things that aren't. Special Edition Episodes of DEI Training I wanted to tackle DEI -- Diversity Equity and Inclusion -- training from its roots. I decided to start with me and like any other normal person share it on a podcast. I can't show up effectively, the way I want to as a leader, mentor, coach, friend, Think Bigger Tribe member without also doing my work. So here we are. In these 5 episodes, you will see ME, DaJuan Johnson, become the STUDENT as I learn about my roots and how they affect my experience as a person of color. I sat down with Dr. Maisha Beasley, a DEI expert, and dove in head first. What you're about to hear is me at my core...vulnerable, raw, and here for it all. Through the podcast I want you to imagine a TREE. Roots, Trunk and the Leaves...this is how we will tell the beginning of my DEI story. I say beginning, because I am clear that there is more work to be done. Episode 1 - We talk about my ROOTS. How growing up in a home where all I wanted to do was get away from the violence, but always had to be home before the streetlights came on, subconsciously shaped my earlier DEI experience. A time where I didn't fully see color and thought of my friends -- white, latinn, mixed -- as my siblings. A time that changed quickly... Episode 2A + 2B: We get into the "TRUNK" of my experience of DEI and talk about how I learned to "CODE SWITCH" to survive. To get ahead. To be successful. How being bused into a new high school that needed to fill a “black quota” changed my life. How my family made it clear, there were certain people -- in my family -- I was not supposed to be like. Episode 3A + 3B: We finish it off with the "LEAVES" of the tree and how I gave myself the "golden ticket" when I stopped trying to be someone else and stepped into DaJuan. Here is where we tie in all of the traditional DEI terms and apply them to my story as a whole. My highest intention here was to learn. And through sharing MY STORY, I hope you see YOUR STORY in it too. I hope that you see that DEI is truly about relationships at its core. I'm sure I stepped in poop on this podcast a couple of times, but what I know for sure is sometimes you have to step in poop to become the leader you are meant to be. My hope is it becomes less and less poop because...I'm here to lead. I cannot believe I am saying these words… DaJuan Johnson (yes, DaJuan Johnson from BOSCH, Greys Anatomy, and much more) stopped by the podcast today! I have been a huge admirer of DaJuan and his work not only as a successful actor but as a heart centered and incredible Life Coach and teacher. If you are new to DaJuan Johnson, here's a little bit about him: DaJuan Johnson is a working actor who gets it. Currently working on Amazon's longest running drama, BOSCH. Which he's been on since the pilot episode! The show is getting ready to start it's 7th and final season! He's also recurred on Grey's Anatomy where ABC put him up for a PrimteTime Emmy for his dynamic recurring performance. He's also recurred and starred on numerous other popular TV shows as well as being the lead in the digital series that got nominated for a Daytime Emmy. DaJuan is also a certified life coach and his mission is to help actors uplevel their career with confidence by providing them with tangible, grounded mindset strategies from real life, current, experience as a veteran working actor. #Trainwithcoachesthatwork I could have seriously talked to DaJuan for hours, but since this is a podcast and not a telethon, we kept it at a jam packed hour for you all. Here are just some of the major takeaways from this meaty episode: Remember to always send the elevator back down Find someone to coach you at the level of your goals Process critical feedback through your business hat, not your self worth/high stakes emotional hat. You are not responsible for your 1st thought, thats your primal instinct. But you are responsible for your 2nd, 3rd and so on. Surround yourself with people who want you to raise your standards! Motivation, positivity, etc., all those states wear off everyday unless you condition them everyday. Name and put a visual to your inner critic. Bruce made a very special appearance in this episode. And last but not least- You cannot be a secret and be a success Follow DaJuan: Actor: Instagram, Twitter, Website Coach: Instagram, Podcast, Facebook group --> Go say hi! ----more---- Wanting to learn more about 1:1 coaching? Today is a great day to revisit one of my favorite episodes with certified life coach and working actor, DaJuan Johnson. DaJuan Johnson is an actor recurring on BOSCH (Amazon), with credits including Grey’s Anatomy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Days of Our Lives, and General Hospital. Despite having an impressive resume to his name, he still felt he was missing something. So he started Think Bigger Coaching, where he helps actors “STOP spinning and start focusing their dreams, setting some attainable goals and getting to that Oscar speech they've practiced so many times in the mirror!” He also runs a free facebook group, the Think Bigger Tribe, where he’s constantly giving away free information to actors! In Episode 228, Trev and AJ respond to a listener question about how to heal the trust with a casting entity for whom you feel you’ve done “bad” work. Then Trev sits down for Part 2 of his chat with DaJuan Johnson to dig deeper into the journey of a working actor – specifically: creating the space for success in life, how being a pro on set is the ultimate ‘networking’ strategy, DaJuan’s experience as an ethnic actor in a predominantly white industry, how relationships are a choice, how being dropped by his management was a blessing in disguise, and a whole lot more.
