I've done the impossible. I convinced my mom and dad to be on the podcast. I know, we thought it would never happen and yet here we are! I am so proud to bring on Rich and Debbie Valentine, and interview them on what it was like to raise an actor and support me in my dreams. You may not know this, but I didn't come from a creative family. It's really all on me, and my parents took a big leap of faith that I am forever grateful for. I share my experiences and challenges as an actor with my parents, and hear their side on how they feel about me moving from the Midwest to Los Angeles, constantly facing rejection, and coming out on top. Recorded at the family home, this is a must-listen for anyone needing a boost of familial support and insight into the actor's life. Waiting in line since 5am. Spending 8+ hour days for an audition you may never get. Having to find the best audition material to match the tone of the show you want. These are the realities of theatre actors, and I'm bringing on the one and only Maggie Bera to take us through the current state of theatre in New York City. Gabrielle is now my roommate and you can be sure to let Caleb and Corey know. No, but really, we have spent a LOT of time together recently and we wanted to sit down together and really get into how living with each other has given us brand new perspectives on the industry. We have each gained a better appreciation for truly how different actor's lives can be. We are going into how we view each other's individual journeys, our varying audition experiences, and the realization that smaller acting roles can still significantly contribute to an actor's career. That's right: we are in a market that now values career expansion over leveling up, and if you don't know what we're talking about, then listen through all the way to the end and you'll know exactly what we are probably going to be seeing in 2024 and beyond. In the final episode of the April series on the One Broke Actress podcast, we are focusing on looking back at all of our past goals and what we want to change going forward to get us closer to our ideal more. I'm going to introduce an equation to help you set up the next three months of your life, focusing on accomplishing and enjoying what's been done, the current vibe of 2024, and desires from an ideal morning exercise. This is going to involve selecting one area (health, finances, career, mindset, relationships, spirituality) to focus on for improvement. Choose something that actually works for you, that you will work towards, because we need to actually execute plans rather than merely discuss them. Put your plan into action!! And trust me, I know it's hard. We get really honest about what I've been struggling with and want to change for the future: improving my mindset. I'm revealing vulnerabilities about trusting in my career and my struggles with self-doubt. But we are also going to take those feelings and outline specific goals to support my mindset, including limiting my daily tasks, spending time alone daily, and ensuring all other goals support my main focus. Hold me to it, and I'll hold you to yours! What goal are you focusing on for the next three months of 2024? We are going to do a little mini series for the both of April where we focus on resetting our goals and structuring routines. I've noticed and also felt the low morale we all have post-strike here in the entertainment industry, and I want to help us all get through it a little bit easier. I am going to empower you, yes you, to take charge of the areas of your life that you have influence over, not what is out of our control. Each week, I will ask you a weekly question to reflect and work on — each covering different aspects of life including financial, career, health, relationships, and mindset. I'm even going to get vulnerable and share my own reflections. Trust me, it's so important to look back on your year while it's happening rather than just when it is over, and make sure we are taking steps to find happiness within ourselves, even if the rest of the industry is full of chaos. Sean delves into topics including how he navigated his career's initial stages, his battle with mental health, and the importance of self-discovery. Gabrielle Byndloss is back to discuss the changing face of the acting industry with me as we look at life post-strike in 2024. We talk about the new auditions we've been seeing in the commercial realm that are focused on social media ads, the deal with commercials and streaming, and how the industry is reshaping itself. Pilot season is changing before our very eyes and no one knows exactly what is going to come to replace it. We even go into how we define success an acting, arguing that it can look quite different than what many might think. After all, as working actors, we are constantly trying to get to the next thing, to reach that number one spot on the call sheet…but what would happen if we reconnected with our why and looked around at the life we've built and all of the chances that we do get to act? It might be worth a try. We are bringing back Rus Garofalo of Brass Taxes (where I personally do my taxes). He was a hit last year, and he's back with even more tips to help us all make this terrifying time just a little bit less scary. When it comes to taxes for creative professionals, there are so many nuisances that others don't have to deal with because it is such a volatile industry. We go into what the difficulties that come from the tax system not being designed for those in the gig economy, and answer commonly asked tax-related questions such as quarterly taxes, business write-offs, and when it's beneficial to establish an LLC or S Corp. We also talk about how we each need to find what works for us when it comes to our money, and that includes making informed decisions. So if you're stressed right now, sit back, listen in, and get your notebook ready to approach taxes from a place of empowerment. (PSST: Be sure to listen to the end for a special OBA discount!!) In this riveting reflecting on the SAG-AFTRA Strike, Paramount Strike Captains Brittney Baxter, Iris Liu, and Brendan A. Bradley share their firsthand experiences from the picket lines. They discuss their motivations for joining the strike, their unique perspectives on union participation, the challenges they faced, and the transformation they underwent through the experience. Iris spills about how the strike was not just a professional task but a personal journey towards gaining control over her career, while Brendan elaborates about the importance of speaking up for change in the union. Brittany stresses how we all need to question and challenge our union while aiming for future contracts. The captains also share their perspective on how pre-union members should see their fight in the strike too. Finally, they each show gratitude to everyone who supported them and ensured they could still pursue their passion - acting. This candid conversation really warmed my heart, and I think it is going to provide a unique insight into the world of actors, strikes, and the power of standing together for change. In our final installment of the Headshot miniseries, I'm welcoming back someone who I have shot with several times over the last decade: Leah Huebner. If you've looked through IMDb or iSpotTV, you've seen a Huener Headshot. Leah, a former actress turned professional portraitist, offers her unique perspective on the art and business of actor headshots. We're back with another installment in our headshot photographer miniseries with Atlanta based photographer Chase Anderson. Recommended by our resident Atlanta Queen Gabrielle Byndloss, Chase is a renowned photographer who has used his acting experience to enhance his clients session and get shots that work. In this episode we get into Chase's journey from working as a server to being a notable photographer, why being an actor influences his work as a headshot photographer, and his unique approach to his photoshoot sessions. We also talk about 'market-specific' headshots, the trend towards editorial-style photography, and the fact that there is no absolute right or wrong in creating a successful headshot. His philosophy of enthusiasm, spontaneity, collaboration, and being yourself during a headshot session will, without a doubt, transform your next session. ▶▶ This is a Replay Episode that I think is still super useful. Happy Holidays, everyone! This was going to be a podcast episode just for the Patreon, but I thought that this topic was something that we could all use to set up our 2023 rather than feeling like it has to be "our year" in a career that will take a lifetime. To me, setting ourselves up for a successful year means making SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely quarterly goals for ourselves that are fully within our control. Even though we can't control booking this costar or that guest star, we can control the habits and systems we use to prepare ourselves for our next role or help us be healthier, happier humans. Take out a pencil and follow along as I give you my top six tips to what I do to make my own SMART goals. 00:00 — Intro 05:40 — Why This Is Not "Your Year" 08:47 — Tip #1 09:33 — Tip #2 12:09 — Tip #3 17:25 — Tip #4 22:53 — Tip #5 26:14 — Tip #6 28:06 — Wrap-Up Resources Mentioned in This Episode: ★ The Membership ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ Want more? ▶▶ This is a Replay Episode that I think is still super useful. Happy Holidays, everyone! I wanted to make a podcast and YouTube video all about what actors actually do over the holidays. I know we always want to be doing something for our careers and using every minute of our time towards the next thing, but rest is a crucial part of being a creative person. But most of the productions around Los Angeles and the country shut down for these last few weeks as casting directors, agents, managers, directors, writers, crew, and all of the other excellent people who work on the shows and films we love go home to spend time with their families. So rather than feeling guilty about this past year, allow yourself time to breathe. If you don't know where to even start, I've got you covered. Adam Shapiro (Never Have I Ever, Steve Jobs, Central Park, The Continental, and so much more) is a force to be reckoned with. Not only has he been building up a solid list of on screen credits, but he has launched his own pretzel company during the pandemic. In fact, he's been on the picket lines since the very beginning handing out those pretzels for free. Today I was able to sit down with him and really get into the nitty gritty of what it's like to build a business while also pursuing an acting career. Adam shared stories about his unique approach to marketing himself, including using a tiny resume and creating a hilarious DVD demo reel with commentary. This is a replay of an episode I did on the Rebel Filmmaking Community Podcast. Sean Crampton and I sit down and have a candid conversation about my journey as an actress and entrepreneur. I share how I found my way to acting, what it took for a small Midwestern girl to finally find a home out on the West Coast, and how filmmaking stole my heart. From my early days in the industry when I was crying on my futon to the present where I've started to find my stride, I open up about staying true to yourself and daring to follow your own path. Join me as I open up about the realities of being a multi-hyphenate and the constant balancing act between different aspects of my life. I had an entirely different plan for this video but, after one scroll session on TikTok, I am fired up. I saw video after video of day-in-the-life-of-an-actor content, which I love and think we need more of, but each one only showed the highlight reels. The days on set. Working for Netflix. Booking a dream role. I want that stuff to happen for all of us, but the average day to day of an actor usually involves none of that. For us folks who are working actors and not in the top 1% of A-Listers, it means we have to walk our dogs or pay our bills or try to motivate ourselves to go to the post office. So I went to ChatGPT to see what a robot - taking all of the information it can find online - would think an actor's day would look like. Guys. It was vile. Listen in and hear what an A.I. thinks we do versus what we actually do. A Long Island native, actor, writer, and (reluctant) producer Eddie Alfano (Barry, Shameless, Good Trouble, Birds of Prey) has a huge body of acting work and has written and produced multiple award-winning short films and web series. We covered a lot of ground in this interview, from the challenges of film acting to how to utilize your perfectionist traits to nail your self tape every. single. time. Eddie looks back on his career when he started acting back in 2008 during the last Writer's Strike and what he would have done differently, and how he has chosen to embrace his typecast as the cop and bad guy. He also shared what it was like for him to cast his own short films, and what he looks for when casting actors. Learn More About the SAG-AFTRA Strike Here! *any references made to the SAG-AFTRA Strike are not on behalf of any SAG-AFTRA officials, please use the official site for all up-to-date information* I am dismantling the idea of going "all in" on your acting career. When I say that I hate this term, I mean that I hate it. You hear it all the time, especially at the beginning of the year or after the industry picks up again after a hiatus. But what does it actually mean? We have been led to believe that we need to let acting consume our lives in order to succeed; that we have to take class after class, pay for headshot after headshot, attend workshop after workshop. But when will it be enough? If we don't build a sustainable life for the coming decades, we will burn out in the end. We are already actors and we are already enough, so don't sacrifice a fulfilling life just to impose a deadline on your dreams. What I say in this is my opinion only, but I'd love to know what you think when people say to go "all in" on acting. Join The Membership while the doors are still open! I am excited to share what my co-CEO, Gabrielle Byndloss, and I have been working on for the past few months: our brand new adventure called "The Membership". Our business supports actors by providing them with the resources they need to advance their careers. The Membership is a more than just a program - it's a community of like-minded individuals working towards the same goal, offering on-camera coaching calls for personalized feedback, supportive study halls, and an actor's workout that combines exercise with affirmations and visualization techniques. Our mission is to have this community be the one we wished we had when we were starting out as actors. We go over the program's pricing and structure, and also what this means for both of our followings. In this mini-episode, DaJuan Johnson and I discuss the WGA Writer's Strike and the possibility of a SAG-AFTRA strike as SAG heads into negotiations in June. We have a full sit-down talk coming, but we wanted to share this segment early because we believe it could help energize the acting community ahead of the SAG Strike vote. We get really transparent about our paychecks, the importance of actors receiving residuals, and why we believe the strike is necessary to continue doing what we love while also being able to pay our bills. We believe that when we stand united as a group, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. Vote YES to the 2023 SAG Strike Authorization Vote for TV/Theatrical/Streaming contract negotiations! Happy Mother's Day! To the mothers out there, to those who have chosen not to have children, for those who can't, for those who have lost a mother, for those who may not be close with their mother, for those whose mother is their best friend. Being in this business is hard enough without having to worry about dependents, and families, and schedules, and pregnancy. For all the moms out there that are also actors, they have to juggle a million and one things all at once. Today I wanted to speak with some women who have made the choice to have children, and what that has looked like for them in their day-to-day life and in their career. We are joined by Christine Lin, a stage and screen actress born in Indiana with a biomedical and electrical engineering degree from Duke. She originated the role of Miss Zhao in "Chinglish" on Broadway. She is known for Surfside Girls, The Blacklist, and Abominable. Then we have the wonderful Linara Washington, who graduated from the University of Chicago, and who moved to Los Angeles after booking the role of Keisha in Barbershop 2. Since moving here, she has been on several of your favorite shows; Grey's Anatomy, NCIS, Madame Secretary, and more. She is the co-owner of Picture Palace Films and has produced two feature films. Last but not least, we have Wendy Wynne who you can see on Who is Killing the Cheerleaders and Jesus Revolution. TW: Body Dysmorphia + Disordered Eating My relationship to my body has been a lifelong uphill battle. There are so many moments in my life where I have just felt absolutely disconnected to what my body really looks like. After years and years and years of eating disorders and body dysmorphia, I have finally gotten to a place where I am happy with where I am. I fuel my body, I take care of it, and I have learned how to engage in the pursuit of acting without the toxic Hollywood ideal of becoming ever-thinner. This episode was immensely personal and vulnerable for me to share, especially as I look back on an article that dove into what 2017 Sam believed to be a healthy relationship with food. Let me know if this helped you in some way, and how you have learned to take care of yourselves and your body as an actor in this business. Jen Ponton is an actor, writer, and creator who seeks to make others laugh while also remaining true to her values as a queer fat activist. You may have seen her work on AMC's Dietland, The Unbreakable Jimmy Schmidt, Orange is the New Black, Love on the Run, or her new highly anticipated recurring role on Three Women opposite Shailene Woodley and Betty Gilpin. Recently, she wrote and produced a TikTok social media horror event called Caretaker. In this episode, I sit down with Jen to talk about her experience creating that film, what inspired her to make content specifically for social media, her transition from theater to film, and how loving herself completely changed her acting career for the better. Back in December 2022, I was asked to join The Financial Diet YouTube channel to talk about my experience as a working actor in Los Angeles. I am a long time fan of theirs, and jumped at the chance to be real about living paycheck to paycheck in a city with an incredibly high cost of living. We sat down and got honest about it all: rejection in the industry, nepo babies, and the financial realities of the Hollywood dream. Today's ⏮️REWIND⏮️ is just a small snippet of the whole collaboration, so be sure to check out the full video with The Financial Diet to hear all Chelsea Fagan and I had to say! — Financial Realities of the Working Class Actor — Agents, Managers, and The 10% Cut — SAG-AFTRA Dues — Auditions & Money: Coaching, Wardrobe, Hair, Makeup, Nails — Accepting Rejection & Criticism — Nepo Babies & Socioeconomic Privilege — What Being On TV + Film Actually Pays — Why Actors Leave — Being an Entrepreneur — Motherhood and Women in Hollywood — Social Media and Actors Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Watch the Full Video on The Financial Diet's YouTube!
