The recent flurry of firings in the federal government has sparked new questions surrounding the president’s removal power and its limits. Several lawsuits have now been filed over precisely these questions. These suits could bring an old case back to the forefront—Humphrey's Executor v. United States—in which the Supreme Court ruled that the president cannot constitutionally remove an FTC Commissioner without "inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office," as ordered in the FTC Act. Solicitor General Sarah M. Harris has recently advised the Committee on the Judiciary that these “for-cause removal provisions [...] are unconstitutional and that the Department [of Justice] will no longer defend their constitutionality.”Will this ruling stand, and should it? Is it true that, as the Court reasoned in 1935, the Constitution does not confer an "illimitable power of removal" on the President? Join this FedSoc Forum to discuss these questions and more.Featuring:Prof. Jonathan Adler, Johan Verheij Memorial Professor of Law and Director, Coleman P. Redd Kross, a band overdue for massive appreciation, is having a moment. There's a new page-turner of a memoir, Now You're One of Us, co-written by brother bandmates Jeff and Steven McDonald with Dan Epstein. Their narrative rocks to life in Andrew Reich's new documentary, Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. The movie, in turn, inspired the 2024 double album Redd Kross, a candy-colored collection of irresistible hooks, massive riffs and sharp reflections, all wrapped in a cover that one brother thought shouldn't be red. Steven McDonald, the younger bass-playing brother, opens up here about what it's been like to work with Jeff (a previous Caropop guest) since the age of 11, his abduction at age 13, his increased songwriting role in Redd Kross, how he juggles his many Redd Kross duties with playing in the Melvins and other bands, what Kurt Cobain said to tick him off and why he takes Redd Kross's commercial struggles personally.
Baxie talks to Rock journalist Dan Epstein. Dan has written for Rolling Stone, the LA Times, Spin, USAToday, Guitar World, and many others. Dan is also the author of two books about 1970's era baseball entitled “Stars and Strikes: Baseball and America in the Bicentennial Summer of 1976” and “Big Hair and Plastic Grass”. On Friday, December 6th, WASTOIDS is hosting our first-ever movie screening at Hello Lincoln—our HQ and also home to Hello Merch & Hello Screenprinting. We're beyond excited to screen the first Phoenix showing of Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. Directed by Andrew Reich, the film tells the story of brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald, who founded Redd Kross as teenagers in the Southern California of the 1970s. Directed by Andrew Reich, this documentary makes the case that RK is the seminal West Coast band of the last half century, a “secret handshake” exchanged between punk, college rock, grunge, glam, power pop, metal, and indie rock fans.Packed with archival footage, interviews with the McDonalds, and thoughts and stories from members of Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, The Bangles, Dinosaur Jr, The Go-Go's, Soundgarden, Black Flag, and many more, the movie shows why people like Thurston Moore called Redd Kross "one of the most important bands in America." Come hang out with us to close out the year of Redd Kross, 2024, which has also seen a brand new self-titled Redd Kross album—you can get your copy from In the Red Records—and Now You're One of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross, a book written with Dan Epstein. Come hang out and eat popcorn with us. GET YOUR TICKETS HERE To get your ready for the show, you're about to hear a talk we taped August 11th at the Valley Bar. It's WASTOIDS chief Sam Means in conversation with both Jeff and Steve—covering not only the band's history, takes on the hardcore scene, and Steve's work with Sam's band, The Format—but also, the saga of Tater Totz, the McDonalds' strange Beatles tribute. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. More podcasts and videos at WASTOIDS.com | Follow us on Instagram and YouTube.

In a June Substack tribute to Cynthia Weil's legacy, Dan Epstein of “Jagged Time Lapse” observed that the “modern pop songbook would be significantly slimmer and less life-affirming without their work”. The ‘their' referring, of course, to her husband and songwriting partner Barry Mann. From their early Brill Building output which included “Uptown” (The Crystals), “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'” (The Righteous Brothers), and “Walking In The Rain” (The Ronettes), to the chart-topping 80s classics of “Don't Know Much” (Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville) and “Here You Come Again” (Dolly Parton), Cynthia Weil's contributions to popular music were indeed affirming. This week's Deeper Roots pays due respect to Cynthia, who was married to Barry Mann for almost 62 years, and was lyricist to his music. Their contributions to the sound of rock and roll and pop music in the 1960s rivaled luminaries like Burt Bacharach, Carole King and Neil Diamond.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Introducing The Long Game Project: Tabletop Exercises for a Resilient Tomorrow, published by Dr Dan Epstein on May 17, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. “No pilot would dare to fly a commercial airliner without significant training in a flight simulator . yet decision-makers are expected to make critical decisions relying on ‘theory', ‘experience', ‘intuition', ‘gut feeling', or less” - de Suarez et al 2012. tl;dr The Long Game Project is an organisation focused on helping institutions improve decision-making, enhance team collaboration, and build resilience. We aim to do this by a) Producing tools and resources to improve access to effective tabletop exercising; b) Providing advice, thought leadership and full-suite consultation to organisations interested in tabletop exercises; c) Encouraging a culture of running organisational games and building a community around tabletop games. Follow us on twitter and LinkedIn, play with our beta scenario-generator tool, provide feedback for some cash prizes and spread the word! Set the scene Imagine a world where organisations are prepared for the unexpected, where decision-makers can more confidently navigate crises and create positive outcomes even in the face of chaos because they have regular, simulated experience. Dynamic decision-making under uncertain conditions is a skill that can and should, be practised. Experience matters. Play it now, before you live it later. Roll for Initiative: Introducing The Long Game Project Our mission is to help organisations improve decision-making (IIDM), enhance team collaboration, and build resilience using tabletop exercises that are rules-light but experience heavy. Why we exist The world is becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable, with organisations facing various challenges. Institutional decision-making in practice is often ill-equipped to handle such complexity, leading to sub-optimal decision quality and severe failure modes. 80,000 hours lists IIDM as one of the best ways to improve existing levers, interventions and practical suggestions for our long-term future and lists this as a neglected issue. While IIDM is a complex cause area, requiring some disentangling, there are existing levers, interventions and practical suggestions that are under-utilised in practice. The Long Game Project exists to bridge this gap by applying several levers to a diverse range of sectors, helping organisations adapt and thrive in an ever-changing landscape. Our toolkit of levers includes; tabletop exercises, role-playing, future simulations, facilitation, probabilistic thinking games, goal and value alignment, decision design and other methods that combine game design and ideas from behavioural economics, psychology, and organisational theory. Critical Hit: Our organisational aims Be the place to point to for tabletop scenario advice and tools- Provide expert-level thought leadership and consultation on running serious tabletop exercises. Lower the entry bar to effective tabletop exercising by producing tools, giving guidance and providing expertise. Empower institutions to tackle complex challenges effectively by transforming how they plan, react, and adapt in an increasingly uncertain world. Focus on scenarios of the world's most pressing problems and long-term horizons. Encourage a culture of running organisational games and building a community around tabletop games. Theory of Change Our theory of change is rooted in the belief that effective decision-making is a learnable skill. By providing organisations with simulated experience, we aim to create a positive feedback loop in which participants develop stronger decision-making abilities, leading to better outcomes and increased resilience. This, in turn, creates more efficient, effective, and adaptable organisations, ultimately c...

Dan Epstein is Director at Trust Ventures, a VC fund helping entrepreneurs overcome regulatory challenges. As a political economist and regulatory litigator, Dan is uniquely positioned to understand the politics, law, and economics of regulation and how it affects entrepreneurs at the forefront of technology.Studying and practicing regulatory litigation on both the government side, and the entrepreneurs' side led Dan to surprising and important insights.Insights that are essential for any entrepreneur. You may not think of yourself as a regulatory entrepreneur yet, but maybe you are.According to Dan, entrepreneurship is about redefining an industry. Uber or Lyft is not a taxi company but invented the ride-sharing business. It's important for regulatory entrepreneurs to think about this because the existing industry is regulated not to fend off competitors and get a ticket to survival.Dan and Niklas develop some nuanced views about regulation and charter important territory for how to navigate the complex regulatory landscape. While the U.S. regulatory state is sclerotic, we do see hope for sustained activism, "right to try" regulations, and sunset clauses, as well as using the playbooks that are increasingly being developed for regulatory entrepreneurs. As VCs, we also see increasing international competition for jurisdiction, and entrepreneurs have the opportunity to choose. There are challenges, but there are exciting opportunities on the horizon for regulatory entrepreneurs.Infinita Discord: https://discord.gg/dwbNh7NKNiklas on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NiklasAnzingerInfinita Website: https://infinitavc.com/

To kick off this bonus FOOTPRINT+ episode, Pete the Builder spoke to Andrew Waugh about using timber in constructionAndrew Waugh, Waugh Thistleton ArchitectsAndrew is a founding director of Waugh Thistleton Architects, an architecture practice dedicated to designing buildings and places of the highest architectural quality that acknowledge their impact on the environment. “…for the last 20 years, we've become increasingly fascinated, even slightly obsessed with the opportunities for building in timber for designing beautiful buildings in timber.” Next up, Steve Randall spoke to Angela Crowther about repurposing existing buildingsAngela Crowther is an Associate Director at Arup. She was a keynote speaker at the event. Her talk was entitled Repurposing existing buildings to save the embodied carbon. Modernising assets to make them more energy-efficient can be done in various ways. For example, one could choose the retrofitting option to make a building fit for purpose for the future. “The opportunity to immediately save 50% of our carbon budget by protecting and celebrating and reusing what we have already built in the past into the future, rather than starting again.” Peter the Builder spoke to Ann-Marie Fallon of Architype about PassivhausAnn-Marie Fallon is an Associate Director and CEPH Designer at Architype. She was a keynote speaker at the event. Her talk was entitled Is Passivhaus the answer? “My context from working with Passivhaus buildings for the last 13 years is that it's become a bit of a dirty word. You know, clients are afraid of it, design teams don't want to touch it, contractors are nervous of building.” Pete the Builder spoke to Councillor Samer Bagaeen about the government's role in achieving Net-ZeroSamer Bagaeen is a member of the Brighton & Hove City Council. With a background in the built environment, Samer is a chartered town planner and a chartered surveyor.Samer believes that achieving Net-Zero ultimately comes down to what local governments and councils in the cities do. He does however acknowledge that there are constraints, the biggest one being money. Despite these constraints, he believes that governments need to be more ambitious in their policies and the delivery of these policies.“You need the bankers to step out, you need central government to kind of be more ambitious in their policies and the delivery, so it's a collective effort”Pete the Builder spoke to Courtney MacDougall of Vattenfall about educating people on low carbon solutions.Courtney MacDougall is a project engineer for Vattenfall. Working with the wider project team, she provides technical advice and steers the project through the development and delivery stages. “So it's really that education piece that you don't need to have a boiler within your house or in your flat, you can have a heat pump” Next up, Pete the Builder spoke to Dan Epstein about using solar energy. As back-to-back #1 draft picks for the New York Yankees, Ron Blomberg and Thurman Munson made for an odd couple. One was a good-looking, gregarious kid from Atlanta, who cheerfully talked anyone's ear off at the slightest provocation; the other was a dumpy, grumpy dude from the Midwest rust belt who was about as fond of making idle chit-chat as he was of shaving. Despite the surface differences, the two men would form a close attachment as they ignited a youth movement with the ‘70s Yankees. Now, more than 40 years after Munson's shocking death in a plane crash at age 32, Blomberg reflects and opens up about the beloved Yankees captain in an extraordinary memoir that reaches far beyond baseball – The Captain & Me: On and Off the Field with Thurman Munson. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Blomberg offers a fascinating, unvarnished glimpse of an incredibly tumultuous time in baseball history. Above all, The Captain & Me is an illuminating remembrance of Munson as a player and as a person, filled with previously untold stories about his analytical-yet-hardnosed approach to baseball, as well as his kindness and generosity off the field. About the Authors: Ron Blomberg spent eight seasons in the majors with the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox, and was twice voted "Most Popular Person in New York" during his playing days with the Yankees. He earned a place in Cooperstown, thanks to becoming the first designated hitter to make a plate appearance in an official MLB game (he walked with the bases loaded), and he was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and was elected to the New York Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021. He is the author of Designated Hebrew: The Ron Blomberg Story. Dan Epstein is the author of the 1970s baseball histories Big Hair and Plastic Grass: Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s and Stars and Strikes: Baseball and America in the Bicentennial Summer of 1976. Mystery Ball '58 (Grassy Gutter Press) It's 1958, the Giants have just moved to San Francisco, and Snappy Drake, ex-minor league pitcher turned Seals Stadium usher, finds a dead body in his grandstand section on Opening Day. With someone apparently out to frame him, Snappy probes deeper and deeper into the mystery, encountering shady local officials, a smart, fetching female reporter from L.A., and a cast of colorful Bay Area characters who just may or may not be involved. As the pennant battles tighten, the race to identify and stop a murderous madman is running out of time... Praise for Mystery Ball '58 “Jeff Polman's latest combines the Golden Era of Baseball with the Golden Era of Pulp to produce a page-turner and must read...” --Joe Sheehan, Sports Illustrated “Smart and funny, foggy and frightening, Polman reminds us of something we'd somehow forgotten: fiction is fun.” --Scott Simkus, author of Outsider Baseball: The Weird World of Hardball on the Fringe "Where else could Jack Kerouac and Hammerin' Hank Aaron come together so enjoyably but in the irrepressible mind of Jeff Polman? In Mystery Ball, Polman, master of breathing life into history by playing with it, ventures back into 1958 to create a page-turning whodunit that bubbles over with crackling dialogue, baseball, beatniks, adventure, murder, and the grisly, joyous mess of this random dice roll called life." --Josh Wilker, author of Cardboard Gods "Mystery Ball '58 just sparkles, full of Polman's signature wit, snappy dialogue, and page-turning storytelling."--Peter J. Schilling, author of The End of Baseball and Carl Barks' Duck: Average American Former film critic and screenwriter Jeff Polman writes about baseball and culture for the Huffington Post and many other Web sites.MYSTERY BALL ‘58 is his third unique "baseball replay" novel. A New England native and UMass graduate, he lives in Culver City and watches as many games as his wife and son will allow him. Dan Epstein is an award-winning journalist who covers baseball, music and pop culture for Rolling Stone, Fox Sports, Revolver, Guitar World and several other publications. He's the author of two acclaimed books about baseball in the 1970s, Big Hair and Plastic Grass and Stars and Strikes. He lives in Los Angeles.
Stars and Strikes: Baseball and America in the Bicentennial Summer of '76 (Thomas Dunne Books) When our nation celebrated its 200th birthday in 1976 it marked a year in which the United States hadn't been involved in an active war for over twelve years, the radio airwaves saw an overflow of songs dedicated mostly to carnal pleasures, TV comedies started getting a little more daring, clothes became more outrageous with disco on the horizon, and baseball saw a re-birth like it hadn't experienced in decades. Award-winning journalist and esteemed pop culture chronicler Dan Epstein takes the reader back in time to an amazing year of baseball – amazingly wonderful and amazingly crazy in Stars and Strikes: Baseball and America in the Bicentennial Summer of '76. By the 1976 season, baseball was beginning to be defined by big afros and long hair, by cookie-cutter multi-purpose stadiums that truly did look exactly alike, and by more than one team donning some of the most hideous looking uniforms the game has ever witnessed. Oh, and Astroturf, way too much Astroturf. The '76 season also saw a clash between the last feel-good moments and outrageous personalities of the game as well as the looming labor angst and the full onset of wide open free agency. Change had subtly been taking place, but by the end of that 1976 season much of the game's innocence would be lost forever and baseball would never be the same again. Each chapter of Stars and Strikes is titled for a famous song of that year and the baseball exploits covered therein truly follows the theme of the songs themselves. Along with baseball coverage, Dan Epstein also highlights the events of the world around the game of baseball: Olympic exploits, a new President signaling the end of the Watergate era, busing riots, the trial of heiress Patty Hearst, the tragic Legionnaire's Disease outbreak in Philadelphia, and so many more. Dan Epstein brought the rollercoaster decade of the 1970s to readers' attention with his widely acclaimed Big Hair and Plastic Grass. Stars and Strikes brings to life all the characters, events and cultural forces behind the Spirit of '76. Praise for Big Hair and Plastic Grass "There is a trove of nuggets many of us either never knew or forgot...savor the good parts, which are plentiful." --The New York Times "Dan Epstein and baseball in the '70s go together like Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon." --Wall Street Journal "What the 1960s were to America, the 1970s were to baseball, and Dan Epstein has finally given us the swinging book the '70s deserve." --ESPN.com "Dan Epstein--the leading chronicler of '70s baseball." --Deadspin "Epstein's book waves its freak flag high."--The Onion A.V. Club Dan Epstein is an award winning journalist, pop culture historian, and avid baseball fan who has written for Rolling Stone, SPIN, Men's Journal, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, MOJO, Guitar World, Revolver, LA Weekly and dozens of other publications.
