Madonna has returned this summer with Confessions II: an album full of huge hooks, pounding bass, and sincere emotion. It's the queen of pop's first record in seven years, and serves as a sequel to her 2005 smash hit, Confessions on a Dance Floor. The record ties together threads that have existed throughout Madonna's entire discography, but it also serves a greater purpose. Confessions II is Madonna's biopic, allowing her to tell her story on her own terms. On this episode of Switched on Pop, producer (and Madonna superfan) Reanna Cruz walks Charlie and Nate through the record, and makes the case for it being the best Madonna record of the last twenty years. CREDITS Reanna Cruz: Producer Iris Gottlieb: Illustrator Charlie Harding: Host, Executive Producer Dion Lee: Art Director Brandon McFarland: Audio Engineer Nick Ripps: Video Editor Nate Sloan: Host Lissa Soep: Editor Zach Tenorio & Jocie Adams: Theme Composers Switched On Pop is a co-production of Vox Media Podcast Network, Vulture, and Rock Ridge Productions. When I signed up for dance lessons, I thought I was learning salsa and bachata. What I didn't expect was that the dance floor would become one of my greatest classrooms. In this episode, I'm sharing the unexpected life lessons I've learned through becoming a beginner again. From receiving feedback without taking it personally, to embracing failure as part of growth, to learning to trust, lead less, and follow more, these lessons have stretched me in ways I never imagined. I'll also talk about how stepping into unfamiliar environments can introduce you to incredible people, lifelong friendships, and opportunities for personal growth that would never have happened if you had stayed inside your comfort zone. Whether you've been thinking about taking a class, starting a new hobby, launching a business, or simply saying yes to something that scares you, I hope this conversation reminds you that sometimes the greatest transformation has nothing to do with the skill you're learning and everything to do with the person you're becoming.

Send in your music story! One bad song can empty a dance floor, and the right one can turn a room full of strangers into a single loud chorus. We put that theory to the test by arguing about what truly belongs on a party playlist, what counts as a party starter vs a party killer, and why certain songs work across generations at weddings, school dances, and bar nights. We also catch up on real life: travel weekends, no sleep, and a surprisingly honest look at a health journey built on structure. We talk through a realistic “what I eat in a day,” the basics of a calorie deficit, how processed “health” foods can trick you, and why adding healthy fats and vegetables often matters more than chasing perfect macro math. Yes, ChatGPT comes up too, including how we're using it as a sounding board for grocery choices and routines. On the music-news side, we react to Lewis Capaldi teasing a return to the studio, then unpack a viral America's Got Talent moment: 16-year-old Nene Royal tearing into “Zombie” by The Cranberries with serious stage presence. From there, we pivot to our Song of the Week, Bob Seger's “Turn The Page,” and the bigger reminder it sparks about judgment, empathy, and finding common ground. Then it's pure fun: we shuffle our own libraries for “Party Starter or Party Killer,” debate the Top 10 party songs list, and get into the real-world details that make a wedding DJ set hit or flop, including closers like “Mr. Brightside” and why “September” keeps winning. In Episode 219 of On The Delo, Delo sits down with Manny and Rick from Nightlife Security Consultants to expose the security failures, operational mistakes, and liability risks that cost bars, restaurants, and nightclubs hundreds of thousands of dollars every year. From a $248,000 lawsuit over an $8 bar tab to a man stabbed on a dance floor the night before his sister's wedding, this episode reveals what operators can do today to better protect their guests, employees, and business. With decades of combined experience in law enforcement, nightclub operations, hospitality security, expert witness testimony, and staff training, Manny and Rick have helped operators across the country reduce risk and build safer venues. Together, they break down the five areas where businesses get picked apart in litigation, why hiring the biggest guy isn't always the right move, how post-COVID nightlife is evolving, and what a well-run security operation actually looks like—from the front door to last call.Whether you're a bar owner, restaurant operator, nightclub manager, hospitality professional, insurance agent, or simply interested in hospitality leadership and risk management, this episode is packed with real-world stories and actionable insight.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:40 - 3:10) Intro: Episode 219, Guests Manny & Rick, and San Diego Small Talk(3:11 - 7:26) Origin Story: Nightlife Security Consultants Founded in 1998(7:27 - 12:38) Rick's Background: 20 Years in Law Enforcement, MBA, PhD & Training Philosophy(12:39 - 16:36) State-by-State Laws, Dram Shop Preparation & the Five Areas of Litigation Research(16:37 - 22:02) Proactive Security, Patron Monitoring & the Puppy Analogy(22:03 - 26:21) Risk by Venue Type: Why Culture & Ownership Matter More Than the Concept(26:22 - 30:21) Hiring Smart: Background Checks, Team Diversity & Women in Security(30:22 - 35:29) Why Operators Don't Hire Help—and Who Does(35:30 - 40:00) Nightlife Trends: Post-COVID Habits, Day Drinking & the Gentleman's Club Pivot(40:01 - 45:01) Craziest Claim Stories: $248K Over an $8 Bar Tab & a Stabbing on the Dance Floor(45:02 - 51:12) Services: Training, Consulting, Policies, Major Incident Review & Expert Witness(51:13 - 58:19) Rapid Fire Questions & Outro

Summary In this episode, Andy sits down with Cornelia Choe, leadership advisor and founder of global CEO peer groups, author of The Panoramic Leader: How Great Leaders See Differently, co-authored with Marshall Goldsmith. Cornelia's core idea is that the "mental maps" we form early in life quietly shape how we lead today, and that our decisions are only as good as the world we're actually able to see. Andy and Cornelia explore why so many new executives fail within their first 18 months, what she calls a visibility problem rather than an execution problem. They dig into practical tools: microtranslations for sharing ideas others can absorb, optimistic fear that lets us move forward without ignoring real risk, and the balcony-and-dance-floor balance of perspective and proximity. Cornelia also shares how getting up close to stakeholders, and even to her own kids, opens up options we couldn't see before. If you're looking for practical ways to see more clearly and make better decisions in an uncertain world, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "And the truth is, sometimes the problem is not that we lack data, it's that we're not seeing broadly enough." "And if you truly believe something, stick with it, keep it on your map, and have the courage to go through with it." "But the problem is it's no longer enough to be right in today's world, and having an incomplete picture is just as dangerous as getting it wrong." "Optimistic fear is the ability to keep the risks and the danger in mind, yet to still go forward and to use our fear to fuel our momentum going forward." "We don't need to have everything solved, but just getting up close can reward us with a lot of options." "I mean, in some ways you could argue that our brain's autopilot is not a bug, it's a feature." "You don't have to accept everything you hear or everything your stakeholders tell you, but we do need to think about it and, in a thoughtful way, choose to accept it or not." "And in a world that's constantly changing, this is going to be an even more crucial skill because your decisions are only as good as the world you see, and the most successful leaders learn to see more in today's world." "It's just a good reminder to me that a smart, well-intentioned person can see situations quite differently." "Our identity is created by the people around us, the people who share their perspectives with, and the perspectives that we allow to become part of our mental maps." "I heard someone once say that we're all driven by just a few lines of code that run in the background, and as a former software developer, I can relate to that."
