Kerridge, the newly appointed CEO of Hiscox USA, has a proven track record of building successful and profitable businesses during his career. Having joined Hiscox in 1996, he created Hiscox's first direct online business in the UK; initially for home insurance and then for commercial clients. In 1999, Kerridge started Hiscox's first direct-to-consumer online business in the UK, leaving it in 2009 with a market-leading position in the small business and affluent homeowner's insurance arena. Kerridge then relocated from London to New York to oversee the launch and development of Hiscox's US digital small business operation. Kevin Kerridge was executive vice president of the direct and partnership division at Hiscox USA, the US arm of the global specialty insurer. He guided Hiscox's effort to reinvent small business insurance in the US, delivering it through a best-in-class online and service center delivery model. Hiscox had first mover advantage when it launched the service in 2010 and is now focused on stretching its lead and capitalizing on the almost $200 million invested so far in the technology, marketing and service center. Under Kevin's leadership, Hiscox reinvented small business insurance in 2010 when it launched the first online direct-to-consumer business insurance platform in the US – which now serves over 500,000 small business policyholders. Kevin has deep expertise at the intersection of technology and risk as it relates to starting, growing and protecting a business. He has received numerous industry accolades and is a sought after speaker on issues relating to small business and InsurTech. Highlights from the Show Kevin Kerridge is the CEO of Hiscox's US business, and has spent 26 years with the company, 22 of which have been building and running their digital businesses in the UK and US In 2009, after building the mid- and high net worth homeowners digital offering and then moving to small commercial, Kevin came to the US to build their direct, small business offering here For years, Hiscox had no carrier competition despite lots of analysts predicting other carriers would come into the digital, direct space any minute Kevin sees this as a supply-side problem because there were no carriers with huge market share who could move the market, and, despite customers searching for insurance and trying to buy direct, online, carriers didn't see enough payback to warrant making that move Hiscox saw this as an opportunity to avoid being stuck in the middle and have the chance to compete as a leader that owns a space, which they were able to do with a 10-year head start over InsurTech players and incumbents who are finally moving into the space It turns out, they are stuck in the middle, but it's between InsurTechs who didn't exist yet and incumbents who didn't move fast enough, giving them a huge head start on startups and incumbents Hiscox has had a much more open approach to distribution than many carriers, with Kevin often talking about the approach as "All roads lead to Hiscox" After investing hundreds of millions in the solution, they've ended up with great scale with over 500k customers and 130 brands they distribute through This openness is key because of how hard and expensive acquisition is, so you need partners, even if they may look like a competitor through another lens Small Business in the US is probably $130 billion, and no one carrier can have an expansive share there because it's too big for a single players, so having a network of collaborating partners is critical To take advantage of these opportunities takes thinking about insurance as a retail business would or you'll miss what the Small Business buyer needs Kevin says you should never forget the fact that you're an insurance company, and fast growth may be dangerous if you lose sight of underwriting and the need to make good underwriting choices Scale helps with the fix costs and loss smoothing, but it can't help with structural underwriting unprofitability New entrants help change the way incumbents think, which is so necessary Looking forward, Kevin sees that: People will keep underestimating the intermediated channel, especially as traditional distributors get on the digital curve There will be a lot of rethinking about small commercial products for the truly small businesses who are stuck with minimum premium coverage that's actually more than they need Simplification will still matter because SMB customers often need to be sure they are covered, but they're really looking for coverage to enable their ability to do business This episode is brought to you by Duck Creek Technologies (duckcreek.com) and their Conversations on the Creek podcast (duckcreek.com/podcasts). And by the the book series, The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Robin Ganzert is President and CEO at American Humane, an organization dedicated to ensuring the welfare and safety of animals while strengthening the bond between them and humans. She is a global nonprofit executive and has been featured on CNN, World News Tonight, Fox Business News, and other notable media outlets. Robin is also an author, radio host, and the Executive Producer of the hit television show: Hallmark Channel's American Humane Hero Dog Awards. Her recent book, Mission Metamorphosis: Leadership for a Humane World, is an inspiration guide to increasing business revenue and efficiency while effecting positive change in the world. She is this week's guest on this episode of Love In Action, sponsored by Duck Creek Technologies. American Humane was founded in 1877 and is America's oldest national humane organization. They were behind every major advancement for animals and children from then to modern times, Robin claims. [6:46] Marcel asks Robin to explain the idea behind Mission Metamorphosis and why she wrote it. “We rebuilt this incredible crown jewel in America's humane movement, and I thought that story had to be told,” she responds. “Often, when people start working in a philanthropic organization, they're so in love with the mission that they forget there's a business that is needed behind running the mission. That's when they can lose their way. That story about marrying the mission to a business model was necessary to tell.” [14:59] You can have a great business strategy, but if your organizational culture is one that doesn't support the organization's mission, it will be all for naught, Robin advises. When people aren't inspired to do work that is noble and excellent, they lose their sense of pride, and the culture suffers. [19:46] Robin shares some of the tough decisions she's had to make over the years as leader of American Humane. “When you're a CEO, a leader, you have to have moral courage to make those tough decisions in the toughest times when you're really being tested, and you have to have a [strong] belief in the mission and your own vision,” she adds. [22:30] There were many institutional obstacles in Robin's professional journey by virtue of her gender alone. She talks about the challenges she faced being a woman in the Southern workforce. [26:40] While it's easier to break the glass ceiling in the nonprofit world, it doesn't mean it's a walk in the park. When Robin was hired at American Humane, there was a huge gap between her salary and the salary of the interim CEO. Robin also addresses the lesser-known acts committed against women leaders, including online sexual harassment. Colleen Ammerman is the Director of Gender Initiative at Harvard Business School. She has authored various articles and teaching materials on gender and work, and her research with Harvard Business School Alumni examines how race, gender, and other factors shaped their life and career experiences after grad school.  Her colleague is Boris Groysberg, Professor of Business Administration. He is the author of the award-winning book Chasing Stars: The Myth of Talent. A frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, Boris has written more than 100 articles and case studies on how firms hire, engage, develop, retain, and communicate with diverse talents to create inclusive cultures. Their book, Glass Half Broken: Shattering the Barriers That Still Hold Women Back at Work, aims to peel open the curtain on the pervasive managerial actions and organizational obstacles that perpetuate the gender gap. [1:32] “It can be easy to be a little cynical and pessimistic when you realize how far we have to go even though we've made so much progress,” Colleen comments. “But doing the research for the book made me feel inspired and hopeful, after talking to a lot of people who were committed to being change agents.” [10:02] “[In writing the book], we were trying to do something that would be [both] rigorous and actionable,” Boris shares. “We were determined to write a book that will have practical implications for organizations [and] managers. The other thing that we were trying to do was… see if we could actually get men involved in creating more diverse and more inclusive organizations. If the [specific] group of people is not involved [in that process]... we will only make minimalistic progress, at best.” [11:07] Colleen witnessed first-hand how many women's self-confidence had been chipped away when they realized their path to success was littered with seemingly impossible hurdles and obstacles. It's a loss of human potential, she adds. Even women with advantages like an education from Harvard were finding their paths blocked. [15:50] The main difference between men and women is sociological in nature, not biological, Colleen claims. Their behavior looks different, but if you investigate it, you will find that it's because they are experiencing a different environment, even on the same team or in the same organization. The difficulties women face in moving up the ranks is due to how they are treated, and not caused by gender makeup. [19:26] Women fall through the cracks in moving up the ranks at every level, according to Boris. It happens in hiring, integration, development, promotions, compensations, and across the board. “This cumulative effect is why we have organizations that still aren't very inclusive,” he remarks. “Additionally, many companies are more focused on the D in D and I. Highlights from the Show The idea for Coverhero was born out of a claim experience Naby had that did not go well, and left her looking for how to bring Insurance in the modern world The original idea was a recommendation engine, but in 2018, Naby went around the world to talk to insurers, reinsurers, VCs, etc to learn more and be sure what they were building would really solve a real problem Naby's background is from academia as a social scientist researcher, so she used her training to structure how she handled all of these conversations – 200-300 of them globally – using something called Grounded Theory She realized she had a solution, but didn't know what the problem was, so there was no Problem Solution fit She understood the consumer problems, understood the Big Tech trends, but didn't understand the issues within the Insurance industry itself, making it hard to figure out how to solve the overall issues The result was Coverhero's first product, Hustle, which solved a major financial insecurity issue for self-employed people in just 30 seconds They launched in 2020 in Beta, but the pandemic happened, and things didn't work as planned That meant they had to rethink their distribution strategy and channel This clarified what Coverhero is - a platform that embeds insurance across any other platform at the point of sale to empower the platform economy for personal lines of insurance (e.g. income protection, life insurance, home insurance, etc) They seek to put users in the middle so they can find the products they need, when they need them They have big announcements around Hustle in late 2021, and just made some around their smart home API, Luchi This has all come through a lot of iteration and evolution of the idea behind Coverhero as they've learned, tested and grown Rather than being about a specific product or product set, it's about how the intersection of Marketing Technology and Financial Technology can meet people's needs They realized through trying different products, you can't put a Bandaid on things that need re-engineering, so they had to start from scratch Naby sees it like dating, where when you have what people want, you don't have to try to find success Many of the products they had been thinking about would require huge marketing spend to drive demand, which they didn't want to do Once they had the ability to enable insurance sales in other platforms, the platforms approached them, offering low-cost acquisition where there was unmet demand instead of having to drive it They're building a global, universal API to democratize insurance, but not every market is ready for that as not every market is the same in terms of maturity of the gig economy, platform economy, creator economy, passion economy, etc. The platforms themselves are quite mature in Naby's eyes, as are the ways people use them; a major variability in each geography, though, is the regulatory framework Without solving for the needs of the buyer, the seller and the regulator, you won't succeed The shift toward self-employment, which MasterCard sees hitting 50% of all employment globally by 2023, was a trend Naby thinks was already in motion before COVID, but it was sped up Big Tech has allowed people to start a business and go to market in days Social Media allows people to create a following and market what they're doing These things remove barriers to entry and success As more people are self-employed, they need to become more financially and business literate because they can't rely on the corporate HR function at their job anymore, but many resources are coming to market to help with this Special thanks to Duck Creek Technologies and the Conversations on the Creek podcast for sponsoring this episode.   The Insurance industry is facing a need to change beyond any we've faced before. That thing is ESG. Environmental, Societal and Governance. While many in the industry are waking up to ESG, and some have been taking action for years, the industry as a whole needs to do more. The question is how, and how do we even think about it? In "The Future of ESG in Insurance," Bryan shares the three strategic ways of looking at the issue, and what we can do about it so we, as an industry, can move forward. It is not just about the future of Insurance, but the future of our economy, society, and planet overall. Given how large, complex, and hard to pin down to measurable specifics it can be, ESG is also an area many insurers struggle navigating. With the increased focus on ESG globally of customers, partners, governments, investors, and other key constituents, being able to navigate it successfully is becoming table stakes. That focus is only sharpening. With the new report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that was released on 9 August, 2021, the alarm bell on the environment is ringing louder than ever. As the UN called it, this is a “code red for humanity.”  And Climate is only on one component of ESG. ESG encompasses a much broader set of ideas and issues that must be addressed, like" Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Social justice; Governance and transparency; and more. Sometimes, these issues may be at odds with each other. For example, when making decisions for ecological reasons, we may lead to the displacing of people from their homes or their sole means of earning a living. Or it may be hard to get a clear picture of our performance or how to measure it, which can make it hard to comply with increasing reporting requirements from governments, regulators and rating agencies. Navigating the issue of ESG can be complex, interwoven and overwhelming. We need clarity and structure for how we, as an industry, can think about, develop and execute against our ESG goals. Robert Glazer is the founder and CEO of global partnership marketing agency Acceleration Partners. A serial entrepreneur, award-winning executive, and accomplished operator, Bob has a passion for helping individuals and organizations build their capacity and elevate their performance. Bob is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today international bestselling author of four books, his most recent being How To Thrive In The Virtual Workplace: Simple and Effective Tips For Successful, Productive and Empowered Remote Work. Marcel asks Bob about how he started his newsletter, Friday Forward. “I had a folder of just some quotes and some stories and things that I liked, so I started to fire off an email to my team… it's like spicy chicken soup for the soul [that] challenges you or pushes you to consider something… I don't know if anyone was even reading it but I was enjoying the process of thinking about these things and writing about them. And then 5 to 6 weeks later I heard from people that they really liked it… they were sharing it outside the company,” Bob shares. [5:58] People who oppose remote work may find themselves facing difficulties later down the line. “A notable CEO called remote work ‘an aberration that needs to be corrected as soon as possible,' yet when the company released their earnings for the quarter with employees remote, it was recorded as the single highest revenue and profitability in the history of the company,” Bob remarks. “So clearly, something is working.” [13:55] Managers aren't good at delegating, according to Bob. When a new manager comes in, they are rewarded for doing work, and their delegation skills suffer for it. [19:39] “When you get promoted to manager… you are now rewarded for how good your people are; you should be feeling that warm, fuzzy feeling when someone says ‘your team is crushing it,' not ‘you were crushing it.' You are the conductor, you're not playing the instruments,” Bob warns. [22:09] Marcel asks Bob what the secrets to his success are. “I try… to be consistent between what we believe, what we say, and what we do,” he responds. “I spent a lot of my time focusing on developing our people; it's what I enjoy. There's probably other aspects of being a CEO that I'm not as good at… I think what really frustrates people about leadership is people not being authentic,” he adds. [28:46] “My dominant core value is ‘find a better way and share it,'” Bob comments. “Self-reliance, respectful authenticity, long term orientation and health and vitality… I make decisions based on these things. The company values are own it, embrace relationships, excel, and improve.” [33:28] Leaders that want to reform their company culture should first work on their core values, Bob advises. “Figure out your personal core values and what the organization wants; be radically honest with the world about that and get the right people on board,” he says. [39:12] “I always find that [change] is not about committing to a huge [goal] on January 1st. I'm more likely to believe in the person that starts doing one or two little things than the one who says they're going to change their life and lose 30 pounds,” Bob muses. “I always say to do the 1% rule: do just one thing better. 1% a day in that direction rather than stressing yourself out making huge changes is more likely to give you better outcomes.” A special thanks to our sponsor, Duck Creek Technologies for making the episode possible. As Chief Strategy Officer at Duck Creek Technologies, Eva Huston is responsible for building value for the technology and spearheading corporate strategy on a global scale. She is also an independent board member at E2open and previously served as CFO at Verisk Analytics, as well as Managing Director at JPMorgan. Eva is Marcel Schwantes's guest on this episode of Love In Action.  “I think that whenever you can bring your whole self [to work] ... you're just going to be better. Regardless of your background, everybody has something special to bring to the table,” Eva comments. [7:10] Marcel asks Eva to share lessons she learned moving up the ranks as a woman in a male dominated industry. “You'll hear that a theme in my career is that I would create a role that didn't exist... It's finding new ways to bring value to a company,” she replies. “I tried to look for creative ways to approach things and some ways that might be more traditionally female.” [10:11] Leading with love starts by seeing and honoring the people on your team, Eva says. You would think that you would automatically do that while spending time with them, but it's common to be around someone for a long time and still not truly see or honor them. Practical love starts when you look at who your team is, what motivates them, and what lies in their hearts. By doing that, you validate them as people. [17:37] “As you go up the leadership ranks, I think that you have to find ways to show your strength that are more indirect so people feel like they have that freedom to grow and flourish,” Eva shares. [21:38] Marcel asks Eva what leadership trait is the hardest to internalize and carry out. “Patience,” she responds. “It's hard for leaders because a person who views themselves as a leader wants to run forward and go fast and get things done. You almost have to counterbalance that with that patience and say like ‘Who's on my team? Today's guest is someone with a long history of implementing technology into the Insurance Market. Bart Patrick, Managing Director, Europe for Duck Creek really understands the demands of the industry and the sometimes fractious and strained relationship with technology that it has had over the years. Well all of that is changing and this discussion is all about how that is going to come about. With the advent of cloud computing the industry finally has an opportunity to leave technology to the experts and simply get on with doing what it does best – market, transact and execute innovative insurance deals. In this brave new world, the software and systems we use are becoming simply a utility that we can avail ourselves of and don't have to own and maintain anymore. What's more the best platforms can now allow us to configure them in the way we want to work and let us plug in any of the tools we want to use to help us do our jobs better and compete in the marketplace. This is what people are describing as an ecosystem. But transitioning away from legacy systems that are in fact many systems all bolted together is not easy, particularly if we have limited budgets and the massively important requirement that nothing falls over while we are making the switch to the new way of working. Technical debt is the difference between what you should be spending on innovation and the amount of money you are spending on just keeping the old inefficient systems running. This talk explains how to get out of this debt. My role in this discussion is to be the layman with insurance knowledge and make sure Patrick doesn't get bogged down in technical jargon. Luckily Patrick is a great explainer who knows how to talk to insurance people.
