Things were pretty raw out on Duck Creek, northeast of Hettinger in Adams County, in 1907, but the Milwaukee Railroad had arrived. Soon, over in Lemmon, on the South Dakota line, there was a flourishing newspaper, the State-line Herald. By which we know that “the boys” on Duck Creek, as the editor said, were singing some stanzas about their life as homesteaders.

Channel sampling has revealed high-grade alkalic-type epithermal gold mineralization with 69.1 m at 2.4 g/t gold ("Au") including 26.0 m at 5.4 g/t Au. Alistair discusses the Company's exploration strategy focused in Eastern Australia, particularly the northern extension of the Macquarie Arc, which is largely unexplored and hidden under sedimentary cover. Despite the challenges of drilling these large undercover targets, new geophysical surveys and technology like ambient noise tomography are being employed to hone in on potential copper and gold porphyry systems.    Recent drill results indicate promising pathfinder elements such as arsenic, suggesting proximity to porphyry systems. Ben shares his thoughts on how the organizational structure and culture at American Family provided the support and the resources to build a property risk intelligence platform that helps insurers proactively prepare and respond to severe weather events. From there, they switch gears and talk about climate change, and how changes in the frequency and intensity of hurricanes and floods will lead to more insured losses in the years to come. On this episode of Conversations on the Creek, Rob Savitsky sits down with Duck Creek Co-Founder and VP of Product Strategy, Andy Yohn, to discuss the founding and evolution of Duck Creek. We start off by discussing the early days at the company, and how in the year 2000, Andy teamed up with co-founders Doug Roller, John Roller, Becky Roller, Kerrick Tweedy, Barry Tate, Ken Toler and high school graduate, Devon Clasby to build a low-code, rating engine that would forever change the way that P&C insurers would build and manage insurance products. From there, Andy recounts various milestones as Duck Creek evolved and expanded the company from being a single product to a suite of SaaS core system applications and add-on modules. From teaming up with now Duck Creek CEO, Michael Jackowski at Accenture, to the various acquisitions the company has made along the way in areas such as data insights, distribution management and producer self-service, reinsurance management, and payments, to the growth of the Duck Creek ecosystem of SIs and Solution Partners, it's been an entrepreneurial journey with an exciting chapter ahead! To close out the show, Rob, takes some inspiration from the “How I Built This” podcast and asks Andy: How much of your success do you think is because of your hard work and your skill, and how much because of luck?  As referenced on the show, IVAN's podcast episode where Doug Roller shares his perspective on the origin of Duck Creek can be found here: https://www.insurtechpod.com/episodes/the-mighty-duck-creek/  Check out all our other episodes, leave us a review and follow Conversations on the Creek on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and www.duckcreek.com/podcasts.

Désirée Mettraux is CEO of classic car insurance specialist OCC Assekuradeur GmbH in Germany. OCC is the market leader in the DACH region for the insurance of classic vehicles. The 40 year old joined the company with a wealth of experience from various areas of responsibility in the insurance industry: between 2007 and 2012 she headed the department of motor vehicles and vessels at National Suisse, based in Basel/Switzerland. In this position she held responsible for developing various motor vehicle insurance products. Désirée's focus is digital business, for which she's also consulting the management team of online classic vehicle trading platform 'Classic Trader'. The Swiss national worked as a mentor for various startups in the digital realm and is a co-founder of Swiss camper van hire portal mycamper.ch, where she's still an active member of the board. Désirée left Creadi AG in July 2019, a Basel based InsurTech startup which she co-founded in 2016 and headed as CEO. The music enthusiast and mother of twins lives in Hamburg, Germany with her husband and daughters. Highlights from the Show OCC is a classic car MGA and the market leader in Germany and Switzerland, similar to what Haggerty is in the US Désirée joined 3 years ago to help the company transform and digitize OCC plays in an interesting niche, but there are many different target groups within it that are extremely different, with some classic cars being old and lower-value, whereas others are extremely high-end, with one recent example selling for $39 million Despite not being a classic car enthusiast before, Désirée has worked in the Auto/Motor insurance space for years, and had started a company in the camper sharing space While OCC is selling auto insurance, there is a very different level of engagement with the product than in the mainline auto market While this is a blessing, it also means the owners have a much higher bar you have to meet You need to give customers a choice - not just digital only, but digital first because not every customer wants to work the same way By expanding your view to other segments, you are forced out of your comfort zone and remember that you aren't the customer so you're forced to ask questions and learn rather than assume or presume you know the answer always As an industry, we tend to think from the inside in product development and then are surprised when it does work (when this approach would have worked 20 years ago) We need to take an outside-in view, especially these days This is the start of a new period of change and digitization in the insurance industry We talked about whether the classic car space is protected from change and immune to the impact of telematics, or if it being a successful niche, it has more means to innovate and change Désirée sees embedded insurance is a great opportunity to acquire more customers For Desiree, there's one recipe, and that's not to overthink things and just do it This episode is brought to you by Duck Creek (duckcreek.com), and their Conversations on the Creek podcast (duckcreek.com/podcast). And by the the book series, The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Angela Noble, VP of Innovation at EMC Insurance, joins the show to talk about what it takes to be successful as a leader, as an innovator, and what the future of innovation looks like.  While we may think about new technologies and trends, Angela focuses on the values, culture and ways to build trust with customers, colleagues and partners as the keys to being successful innovators. After all, as Angela sees it, innovation does not sit with a particular person or function. For a company to be truly successful at innovating, everyone needs to be involved. Highlights from the Show Angela is the VP of Innovation at EMC Insurance Angela started in Claims, and feels that's a great place for everyone to spend time in to really understand and appreciate what insurance is really about She also spent time in Underwriting, which is also a valuable and critical place to understand first hand Angela feels having a chance to work in different functional parts of the industry has been so valuable to her work in innovation Angela believes everyone should be an innovator throughout the organization Innovation takes varied people who aren't exactly like us and will approach problems very different For Angela, that means her role is really to elevate others on the team rather than setting the answers to all the questions they face We talked about what it takes to be successful in innovation Patience and respect for what the business or individuals are going through and what their priorities are, even if they don't make sense to you Be curious and ask questions rather than assume answers The only non-negotiable for innovation success is leadership buy-in, which AM Best calls out in their innovation rating and framework Are leaders engaging in innovation, going to workshops, attending demos and presentation, etc This helps keep the Why behind what you're innovating on clear Communication is an art, and it's important to listen and learn what the person needs before you start talking at them or pushing a solution "Don't guess what someone else is dealing with – you're going to be wrong" You have to truly care about the people you with as human beings to be a great leader and mentor A great compliment as a leader is when one of your people gets promoted or poached by someone else in the org Angela also shares genuinely about herself, including her goals and objectives We're at an interesting moment where companies are being reminded to focus on people, what our employees really want and need and how do we meet that We need to have trust for the people we work with to do what's expected, and then have conversations on how it's going and helping them deliver to that Leadership is hard. You have your own role and you have to be there for the people who depend on you, and you need to be able to do both equally well The definition of Innovation will change to be less about tech and more about culture and ideas and including everyone Technology is also changing - what consumers want, what our distribution partners want This episode is brought to you by Duck Creek (duckcreek.com), and their Conversations on the Creek podcast (duckcreek.com/podcast). The Future of Insurance

The Insurance industry is facing a need to change beyond any we've faced before. That thing is ESG. Environmental, Societal and Governance. While many in the industry are waking up to ESG, and some have been taking action for years, the industry as a whole needs to do more. The question is how, and how do we even think about it? In "The Future of ESG in Insurance," Bryan shares the three strategic ways of looking at the issue, and what we can do about it so we, as an industry, can move forward. Bryan Falchuk turns into the guest in this episode, with guest host Ema Roloff, to talk about this issue and the report he's just published on the issue. You can download the report for free at http://future-of-insurance.com/esg thanks to the support of Duck Creek Technologies.   Highlights from the Show We are facing a cliff when it comes to matters like Climate Change and many of the social issues If there is one theme that has become central to so many discussions in the Insurance industry lately, it is Environmental, Social and Governance, or “ESG”. It is not just about the future of Insurance, but the future of our economy, society, and planet overall. Given how large, complex, and hard to pin down to measurable specifics it can be, ESG is also an area many insurers struggle navigating. With the increased focus on ESG globally of customers, partners, governments, investors, and other key constituents, being able to navigate it successfully is becoming table stakes. That focus is only sharpening. With the new report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that was released on 9 August, 2021, the alarm bell on the environment is ringing louder than ever. As the UN called it, this is a “code red for humanity.”  And Climate is only on one component of ESG. ESG encompasses a much broader set of ideas and issues that must be addressed, like" Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Social justice; Governance and transparency; and more. Sometimes, these issues may be at odds with each other. For example, when making decisions for ecological reasons, we may lead to the displacing of people from their homes or their sole means of earning a living. Or it may be hard to get a clear picture of our performance or how to measure it, which can make it hard to comply with increasing reporting requirements from governments, regulators and rating agencies. Navigating the issue of ESG can be complex, interwoven and overwhelming. We need clarity and structure for how we, as an industry, can think about, develop and execute against our ESG goals. Bryan presents a three-part structure for the Insurance industry to think about ESG Corporate Citizenship - the power of our first party practices Investing in Change - supporting better outcomes through investments Enabling the Market - the impact of what we choose to insure In each of these areas, Bryan provides examples and guidance on how we, as an industry, can move forward proactively and effectively on the issue of ESG. You can access his piece on ESG, free thanks to support Duck Creek, at www.future-of-insurance.com/esg Mentioned in the episode is Ed Halsey, who you can follow on YouTube Ema's also worth following on LinkedIn This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, "The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution" by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Today's guest is someone with a long history of implementing technology into the Insurance Market. Bart Patrick, Managing Director, Europe for Duck Creek really understands the demands of the industry and the sometimes fractious and strained relationship with technology that it has had over the years. Well all of that is changing and this discussion is all about how that is going to come about. With the advent of cloud computing the industry finally has an opportunity to leave technology to the experts and simply get on with doing what it does best – market, transact and execute innovative insurance deals. In this brave new world, the software and systems we use are becoming simply a utility that we can avail ourselves of and don't have to own and maintain anymore. What's more the best platforms can now allow us to configure them in the way we want to work and let us plug in any of the tools we want to use to help us do our jobs better and compete in the marketplace. This is what people are describing as an ecosystem. But transitioning away from legacy systems that are in fact many systems all bolted together is not easy, particularly if we have limited budgets and the massively important requirement that nothing falls over while we are making the switch to the new way of working. Technical debt is the difference between what you should be spending on innovation and the amount of money you are spending on just keeping the old inefficient systems running. This talk explains how to get out of this debt. My role in this discussion is to be the layman with insurance knowledge and make sure Patrick doesn't get bogged down in technical jargon. Luckily Patrick is a great explainer who knows how to talk to insurance people. I recommend this podcast to anyone wanting to gain a broad understanding of what our legacy industry tech problems are, where the future lies and more importantly, how we are going to get there. This includes original motion pictures, music scores, film scripts, art work and storyboards, private manuscript collections, photography, you name it, even a couple of Oscars (award statuettes from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science). Documenting America's motion picture industry--from its early beginnings in New Jersey and California, to the end of the last century--was D'Arc's life work. While working as a film archivist at BYU Perry Special Collections, D'Arc worked on advanced degrees, became an adjunct professor in the College of Arts & Communications, founded and directed a film music label, and was the motivation for BYU Lee Library building a two hundred seat theater to screen original 16mm and 30mm films. This series continues today, see: BYU Motion Picture Archive Series. At his retirement, D'Arc left behind arguably the largest, most historically significant collection of its kind, in the interior Western US.    In this episode, D'Arc explains how and why Utah influenced 20th century Hollywood; the Perry Brothers--Chauncey, Whit and Gronway—convincing filmmakers to come to Utah; film that documented landscapes long-since built over or altered beyond recognition (including Cedar Mountain and Duck Creek within the Dixie National Forest,  Kanab, St. George, Utah Valley and Salt Lake City); early silent films made in Utah, copies recently found in Czechoslovakia and Russia; over a thousand films (feature film, TV series and documentaries) produced in Utah; first Hollywood “talking picture” made at Grafton, south of Zion National Park; Utah history related films (regarding polygamists, serial murderers and a convicted murderer executed after the 1976 U.S. Supreme Court decision); how Utah's Monument Valley--and other iconic Utah landscapes--became the world's quintessential “Western” landscape; Irish-American film director John Ford's love of Utah's people and landscapes; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), filmed on Utah's Virgin River; Footloose (1984) filmed in Utah Valley; the film industry impact on Utah's economy; Utah's 1947 official centennial film Ramrod (a smoldering western film noir the Utah legislature did not like); the 1956 film The Conqueror, filmed during atomic bomb testing; and finally, how hundreds of Utah Indians (mostly Navajo or Dené ) served as stand-ins for Plains Indians and 12th century Mongolians.
