In 2025, the landscape of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) work is rapidly evolving and facing well documented challenges, but these challenges also offer new opportunities and growth. Today's guest, Elena Joy Thurston, an HR consultant, discusses the evolution and challenges facing DEI; shares her personal journey of deconstructing internalized biases and how that informs her approach; and she closes out this insightful conversation by highlighting the important work that needs to be done moving forward. Throughout the conversation, Elena emphasizes the need to move away from an "us vs. them" mentality and instead focus on universal themes that bring people together. Dennis is joined via Zoom by Zach Meiners and Elena Joy Thurston, two of the three conversion therapy survivors profiled in the new documentary Conversion, which was also directed by Meiners. (The third survivor profiled is Dustin Rayburn AKA Dusty Ray Bottoms from RuPaul's Drag Race). Zach talks about what inspired him to make the film, why he used detailed miniatures to tell the story visually and how when he was struggling with his sexuality, he always felt like "the worst person in every room." Elena talks about her background as a devout Mormon wife and mother who found herself overwhelming drawn to a woman in her life. She also talks about the social fallout in her Mormon community when she decided to finally live her truth and how, just a few years later, her current family situation is "wildly wonderful" in a way she never expected. Zach and Elena also talk about how conversion therapy is actually an industry that constantly needs to be fed and how the recent laws that have been passed are important but that they've barely put a dent in the problem. Other topics include: American Idol alum David Archuleta's recent coming out, how conversion therapy can often lead to self harm, the surprising amount of queer activism at Brigham Young University and the pair's hopes that the film can be a catalyst for change. www.conversionmovie.com
Featured in leading publications like CEO Magazine and Luxury Lifestyle Magazine, Kevin Loeffler (they/themme) is the Founder and CEO of Finally Kevin!, an inspirational Gender Identity speaker, and author of the upcoming book, "Finally Kevin” (Spring 2025). Kevin's unique journey allows audiences of all generations to understand what gender identity is and, just as importantly, what it is not. Kevin empowers parents and community leaders, regardless of age or background, with the knowledge necessary to increase authentic allyship skills for their gender-diverse loved ones. For almost 50 years, Kevin lived as the person they thought their parents, wives, children, and employers wanted them to be, never daring to be their authentic selves in front of any of them. Their heartwarming story of choosing to live as their transparent self by announcing their gender identity to the world at the age of 63 has landed them numerous media and speaking opportunities. I was introduced to Kevin by friend of the SMA and past guest of the show, Elena Joy Thurston. While Kevin and I recorded this episode a few months ago, I saved it to release during Pride Month because it feels like the perfect closing to this special month. Happy Pride to all our LGBTQIA+ community members. We love you and want you to be 100% you 100% of the time. Listen in to hear Kevin share: How Kevin became Finally Kevin! and what their transformation as a non-binary person has looked like What led them to start to live their femme tendencies out loud after 50 years The interconnectedness between shame and addiction in Kevin's life The difference between gender identity and sexual orientation The beauty and power of being able to finally “get out of bed free” What life feels like to finally be Kevin after 50 years of stifling Kevin How LinkedIn became the safe place for Kevin to begin to own their identity publicly Links mentioned: Kevin's Programs and Resources: Finallykevin.com Kevin on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinmloeffler Kevin on FB: https://www.facebook.com/kmloeffler/ We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Today's episode showcases three guests currently featured in the new documentary, Conversion. This critical documentary exposes the deep trauma conversion therapy causes our LGBTQIA+ community members. Often conversion therapy is veiled as something far different from what it is. Listen in to hear Elena Joy, Zach, and Dustin share: What conversion therapy is Their personal experiences with conversion therapy What conversion therapy looks like and the insidiousness of covert conversion therapy The retraumatization of realizing you went through conversation therapy without even knowing that's what it was How being part of the creation of this documentary has been healing for each of them How conversion therapy changes the brain in a way that doesn't allow for closure in healing - meaning the healing is ongoing and forever What parents should know about conversion therapy as it relates to their kids and the other kids in our respective communities How to show allyship through your commitment to learning about LGBTQIA+ issues Links mentioned: Preorder Conversion: https://tv.apple.com/us/movie/conversion/umc.cmc.75rmpixysv3qoksxyus5zq9rr Watch the Conversion Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=U50wbO3MfANkAxdQ&v=oyLEJtQ6MTI&feature=youtu.be More info on the Conversion doc: https://www.conversionmovie.com/ Elena Joy on SMA Episode 595: Living Out Loud After Enduring Life Threatening Conversion Therapy Conversion movie on IG Elena Joy on IG Dustin on IG Zach on IG We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Send us a textThis week, I am joined by Elena Joy Thurston. Elena Joy is an inspiring LGBTQ speaker, trainer, and founder of the nonprofit Pride and Joy Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to reducing the rates of suicide and homelessness within the LGBTQ community. Elena Joy is also featured in the award-winning documentary, Conversion, and has delivered a viral TEDx talk on surviving conversion therapy.Back in 2017, Elena Joy was a stay-at-home mom of four, deeply entrenched in her Mormon community. However, she began to question her happiness and realized that she was not attracted to men and is a lesbian. This realization led her to believe that she needed to be "fixed," prompting her to seek help from someone who claimed to have the solution. In this episode, Elena Joy delves into the dynamics of conversion camps worldwide, where the promise of an eternal reward of being united with their families in heaven is used as a manipulative tool to change and "fix" queer individuals. Ultimately, she discovered that the support she truly needed did not come from the church, which compelled her to choose life and embark on a journey of healing. In the process, she found a way to assist LGBTQ youth and individuals facing similar challenges. Elena Joy dedicates herself to daily healing work that positively impacts the world, and I am thrilled for you to listen to her story. You can connect with Elena Joy on IG at @elenajoyspeaks @pridejoyfoundation Find Sara here:https://sarafisk.coachhttps://pages.sarafisk.coach/difficultconversationshttps://www.instagram.com/sarafiskcoach/https://www.facebook.com/SaraFiskCoaching/https://www.tiktok.com/@sarafiskcoachhttps://www.youtube.com/@sarafiskcoaching1333 What happens inside the free Stop People Pleasing Facebook Community? Happy Pride, my friends! A couple of weeks ago, I had the absolute honor to moderate a panel of LGBTQIA+ leaders who were collaborating in support of The Pride and Joy Foundation as they had an incredible conversation about how to support our LGBTQIA+ youth during Pride month (and all year long!) When the conversation was over, I asked Executive Director of the Pride and Joy Foundation founder (and past SMA guest), Elena Joy Thurston, if we could share the recording of this conversation as a podcast episode. I just knew our community would love to learn from these leaders. I'm so grateful Elena said “YES!” And shout out to her producer Jessica Whipple who brilliantly edited our conversation so it could be used as podcast content. On the panel, we have: Junior Mintt (she/her), a “Black Transwoman, Drag Preacher, and Businesswoman” Kalyela Josephs (they/she), a “Queer Spiritual coach” whose work has focused on helping families of color understand how to integrate LGBTQ+ culture into their family culture. Rae McDaniel (they/them) recently released their groundbreaking book, “Gender Magic”. They are also a licensed therapist supporting individuals and families with gender transition. Elena Joy (she/her), an ExMormon mom of four kids who has also been featured in the award-winning documentary “CONVERSION”, has a viral TEDx talk, and is now the volunteer Executive Director of Pride and Joy Foundation. C Rizleris (they/them), a contributing writer for the Pride and Joy Foundation, as well as a member of the Transgender Task Force Committee for the city of Greensboro, NC. Listen in to hear this panel discuss: What drag is and what it is not How we can engage in healthy and supportive conversation around gender identity with our youth How to talk about non-supportive friends & family about gender identity How you can use Pride Month to increase your allyship with the LGBTQIA+ Community How to create safety & well-being for our youth all year long - beyond Pride month The best ways to engage rural conservative communities in Pride Month activities How can you support your youth with various intersectionalities (IE: ethnic background, neurodivergence, etc) during Pride month Links mentioned: Podcast: Out of Queeriosity Book: Gender Magic by Rae McDaniels Connect with Kalyela: kalyelaj.com Connect with Rae McDaniel: rae-mcdaniel.com Connect with Elena and/or Support the Pride and Joy Foundation: https://www.prideandjoyfoundation.com/ Connect with C Rizleris: crizleris.com/ Pride and Joy Foundation on IG Elena Joy Thurston on IG Junior Mintt on IG Rae McDaniel on IG C Rizleris on IG Jessica Whipple on IG We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Elena Joy Thurston had the proverbial white picket fence life. And then, her youngest child went off to school, and there was silence in her home, and her head for the first time–and alarming thoughts began to surface. Elena wasn't happy with her perfect life. This just couldn't be true, so she ran to keep the thoughts at bay. But she couldn't run forever so she picked up fly-fishing, intending to catch anything that would help her to keep ignoring her truth: that she was a lesbian. Instead, what she caught, as she stood firmly in the cool water, was herself. TW: On this week's incredible episode, I got to chat with Elena who had the makings of a normal life: conservative faith community, husband, four beautiful kids, and of course, minivan. She discovered a hidden side of herself, having developed feelings for a woman, and took part in conversion therapy. This is her story -- and let's be clear, conversion therapy does not work. // https://www.prideandjoyfoundation.com/ // GET 10% OFF YOUR FIRST MONTH WITH BETTERHELP! Many believe Gay Conversion Therapy went away in the 60s. It didn't. Sadly, it's still very real. This week we speak to Elena Joy Thurston about spirituality and religion, her experience with Gay Conversion Therapy, and how she used mindfulness to recover from it. Elena is an inspirational speaker, writer, and founder of the Pride and Joy Foundation. Throughout this episode, I came from a place of learning - and Elena kindly fielded my clunky questions with kindness and compassion. We dived right in, discussing the dangers of conversion therapy (there is a 57% suicide rate with this treatment); and how this comes from wanting the ‘best for our kids' whilst parenting from fear. 75% of women (yes - us Mums) have had a negative experience in sexuality and as a result, we are parenting from a place of deep protection and trauma. “When fear leads the show, that's when we make decisions that are regrettable.” LGBTQ is the only marginalized communities who are not born into families who are of the same marginalized communities. The parents do not ‘get it' and as a result need to be intentional in getting a greater understanding. Elena suggests how parents might field these conversations; and how with greater understanding and knowledge - we will be best serving ourselves and future generations by parenting and grand-parenting better in the future. ~~~ Elena Joy Thurston is an inspirational speaker and founder of the Pride and Joy Foundation.
