Imagine being stuck in the “in betweens” of your sexuality. You're not “gay enough,” but you're not “straight enough.” Your sexuality is constantly oversimplified, or oversexualized. You're stuck wondering… “Am I bisexual enough???”Though that may not be the reality for all bisexual men, it certainly is a struggle that a lot of people face. Our guest on today's episode, West, is a bisexual man who learned to embrace his sexuality and accept that he is “enough” exactly as he is. In his young adulthood, West thought his bisexuality might just be youthful curiosity. But, as his life continued to progress and West continued to mature, he came to realize that his sexuality wasn't a “phase” or “curiosity.” It was who he was. His journey to this discovery was filled with societal pressures, self-doubt, and uncertainty. Send us a Text Message. This week, I am joined by Elena Joy Thurston. Elena Joy is an inspiring LGBTQ speaker, trainer, and founder of the nonprofit Pride and Joy Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to reducing the rates of suicide and homelessness within the LGBTQ community. Elena Joy is also featured in the award-winning documentary, Conversion, and has delivered a viral TEDx talk on surviving conversion therapy.Back in 2017, Elena Joy was a stay-at-home mom of four, deeply entrenched in her Mormon community. However, she began to question her happiness and realized that she was not attracted to men and is a lesbian. This realization led her to believe that she needed to be "fixed," prompting her to seek help from someone who claimed to have the solution. In this episode, Elena Joy delves into the dynamics of conversion camps worldwide, where the promise of an eternal reward of being united with their families in heaven is used as a manipulative tool to change and "fix" queer individuals. Ultimately, she discovered that the support she truly needed did not come from the church, which compelled her to choose life and embark on a journey of healing. In the process, she found a way to assist LGBTQ youth and individuals facing similar challenges. Elena Joy dedicates herself to daily healing work that positively impacts the world, and I am thrilled for you to listen to her story. You can connect with Elena Joy on IG at @elenajoyspeaks @pridejoyfoundation Find Sara here:https://sarafisk.coachhttps://www.instagram.com/sarafiskcoach/https://www.facebook.com/SaraFiskCoaching/https://www.youtube.com/@sarafiskcoaching1333https://www.tiktok.com/@sarafiskcoach What happens inside the free Stop People Pleasing Facebook Community? Send us a textThis week, I am joined by Elena Joy Thurston. You can connect with Elena Joy on IG at @elenajoyspeaks @pridejoyfoundation Find Sara here:https://sarafisk.coachhttps://pages.sarafisk.coach/difficultconversationshttps://www.instagram.com/sarafiskcoach/https://www.facebook.com/SaraFiskCoaching/https://www.tiktok.com/@sarafiskcoachhttps://www.youtube.com/@sarafiskcoaching1333 What happens inside the free Stop People Pleasing Facebook Community? On this new episode of CitizensNYC Live, we talk with Rue Parkin, the Executive Director of HelpNYC about their experiences being queer and unhoused and how they bring that personal experience to their work of providing resources for unhoused, unsafe, unstable, or under-supported communities.Rue Parkin (he/they/them) was street and shelter homeless for several years in New York City. Struggling with mental health and substance use concerns they struggled, as did various service providers, to find resources that were appropriate for their needs. It was a continual challenge to find access to low-barrier services. In 2016, having lived in independent supported housing since 2010 and being in Recovery, Rue started a list of resources on their phone that they would text messages to friends and others in need. The text contained information on food assistance programs, substance use treatment programs, and Drop-In and Shelter Intake Centers.  Eventually this became helpNYC.In 2022, helpNYC started Community Outreach to help New Yorkers in need in the community.  Outreach Teams partner with community organizations and government agencies to setup up tables at events, career fairs, and other engagement activities to spread the word about the helpNYC.info Resource Navigator and provide direct connections to helpNYC Listing Partners. As of February 2023, through the helpNYC.info Resource Navigator and our Community Outreach, we have helped over 60,000 New Yorkers since 2018.

We also discuss American Atheists' state scorecards, which provide benchmarks across states and show how many states have or don't have certain protections in place. We explore how these scorecards differ from a voter's guide and how they are used for advocacy purposes. Additionally, we touch on the tactic of filing a First Amendment lawsuit against abortion bans and why it is not always ideal. Finally we examine the idea of Third Party Harm and how granting religious exemptions can be destructive and favor some religions over others. We highlight the importance of seeking help from organizations such as the National Suicide Helpline and the Trevor Project in light of the coordinated attack on the trans community happening in Ohio. Over 50% of LGBTQIA-plus people have experienced some form of healthcare discrimination and over 25% of transgender people reported being denied care due to their transgender status. Not having proper health care or avoiding health care due to discrimination, can result in dire consequences, including an increased risk of health problems like kidney disease. What is this discrimination, and how can you advocate for yourself and LGBTQIA+ rights? In today's episode Dr. Joshua Wilder, a podiatrist, and Representative Jeff Currey, two kidney transplant recipients and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, discuss this and more. On today's episode we heard from:    Dr. Joshua J. Wilder- My name is Joshua Wilder and I am a 35 year old foot and ankle surgeon. I identify as a cis, gay, black, man who currently lives in Atlanta, GA. I am a native of Pittsburgh, PA with an upbringing in Cincinnati, OH. I was born with Prune Belly syndrome which required me to have a kidney transplant at 9 years old. I was on season 44 of the grammy-nominated, reality tv show Survivor 44. My favorite pastime is living life to the fullest. Rep. Jeff Currey- A lifelong resident of East Hartford by way of County Limerick, and a proud son, brother, and uncle, is currently serving a fifth term representing the 11th Assembly District, which is made up of parts of East Hartford and Manchester. Jeff, a former Deputy Majority Leader who chaired the Screening Committee on behalf of Majority Leader Rojas, currently serves on the Appropriations, Commerce, and Judiciary Committees. Starting in the 2023 legislative session, Jeff shifted leadership roles to take on the House Chair of the Education Committee, which he has served on since joining the legislature in 2015. Jeff has also worked tirelessly to bolster protections for living organ donors. As a kidney transplant recipient himself, Jeff introduced legislation in 2020 and 2021 to prohibit insurers from discriminating against living organ donors.   Additional Resources: Pride Month Blog Article    Do you have comments, questions, or suggestions? She's baaaaaack!! Godless Mama -- our first guest in 2020 -- will titillate the senses! We talk trauma and therapy, LGBTQ advocacy, fighting on behalf of our kids, contentment, the 2020 election, and getting out the Vote."I'll be goddamned if this crappy world is the one that gets foisted on my kid and I will fight that battle on whatever fronts necessary."Tracey in her own words -"I believe that the only hope for humanity lies in the embrace of evidence-based thinking. Whether the subject is religion or science or politics or anything in between, an earnest desire to ascertain reality demands that we seek the best available evidence, acknowledge our biases, do our best to compensate for them, and be willing to adjust our worldview accordingly. This is necessary even (perhaps especially) when doing so is difficult - in other words, all the time. Intellectual honesty is uncomfortable. Personal growth usually is too. It is easy to talk ourselves into believing that only others suffer the impairment of cognitive bias, or that we are otherwise exceptional and therefore exempt from the rules we expect others to follow. It feels good to be right and even better to be righteous, whereas admitting fallibility can be awkward, humiliating, or painful. But we must resist the siren song of comforting self-delusion and struggle, however clumsily, to reserve the highest standards for ourselves. Moving beyond superstition and tribalism isn't just about the satisfaction of being right: It's about making the world a better place. It's about clearing away the excuses and the ignorance that too often get in the way of seeing our common humanity, and finding our way to a more ethical, more moral, more productive society. This is what I want for my child. It is what all children deserve. And so it starts with me."You can find Tracey at:m.me/GodlessMamathegodlessmama@gmail.comhttp://www.godlessmama.com@TheGodlessMama Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=8739294)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=8739294)

Beyond Your Past

It's no secret that one of the keys to life, is balance. Lean too much towards work, and we can lose focus on our personal life and risk burn out. Lean too far towards the personal side, and we can end up losing sight of the career dreams and things we want to accomplish. When you toss Mental Health into the equation, it adds a whole new dimension to this struggle. Not only do you have to juggle your personal and professional life, what ever that looks like for you individually, now you have any number of mental health challenges that bring about their own daily influx of struggles. Talk about the need for balance, right! As a mental health and LGBTQ+ advocate, and current MSW student, Lee Thomas shares her thoughts on this topic and several others during this episode of the podcast.I first met Lee when I came across her weekly Facebook Live show, Crazy Talk, after the HealtheVoice 2018 Conference. Lee regularly interviews advocates, clinicians, professional, survivors and others all around the topic of mental health and advocacy. I was honored to be on Crazy Talk earlier this year (you can find that episode by clicking here) and now I'm pleased to have Lee join me on Beyond Your Past.Lee was born and raised in a small town in northern Alberta. From a young age they were heavily involved in athletics, student government, and other extracurriculars. However, during their teen years they began battling a mental illness. Feeling scared and alone, Lee struggled silently for many years. Their illness worsened throughout their high school years and continued into university, until Lee finally sought help and began the difficult process of recovery. After Lee began the recovery process, they realized that there were still many people struggling with mental health issues in silence. To reduce the stigma around mental health issues on their campus, Lee founded the #MyDefinition poster campaign in 2014. Since then, Lee has been working as a motivational speaker and mental health trainer, speaking to groups of all ages and sizes about their own mental health experiences, the important of reducing stigma, and LGBTQ+ issues. While continuing her graduate education in the field of social work, she continues to serve as a speaker, trainer, and writer in the mental health field; her work has been featured on The Mighty, TEDx, CBC News, and more.During our chat on the podcast, we cover some of the struggles and triumphs in her life so far as well as her future work as social worker serving the LGBTQ+ community and others who know what it means to struggle with a mental illness such as depression, eating disorders, bipolar, and more:Her struggle with depression, eating disorders, and self-harm in her teen-age years. The realization that she had been suffering in silence for so long, and then learning what a mental illness means for her.The limited information available about mental health when she was younger, and what she re-learned later.Starting the #MyDefinition poster campaign and how that lead to acquiring speaking engagements and sharing her story at conferences and workshops. The 3 keys of validation she needed to get started in her career: Passion, Knowledge, and Something She was Good at.What vulnerability looks like for each of usStaying busy and the risk of doing so to avoid confronting and working through tough memories and emotions. How staying busy reinforces the mindset of "uncopewithable" situations, and how this can set back heaSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sPH8pMZ)
