While the state is making progress, LGBTQ+ students still experience harassment, violence and lack of affirmation in school settings far too often. This is why I introduced the Safe and Supportive Schools Act on my first day in the State Assembly. AB 5 provides high quality, professional development opportunities to educators in order to help foster inclusive classroom environments and appropriately address the unique challenges that LGBTQ+ and all students face. The bill would yield significant benefits for educators that directly transfer to the success of LGBTQ+ students and advance overall educational outcomes.

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with author and political organizer Doug Greco. Greco has organized for over 15 years in Austin and San Antonio with the Industrial Areas Foundation, the nation's largest and longest-standing network of faith and community-based organizations. Before that, he served as Director of Programs with Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ organization. His book, To Find a Killer: The Homophobic Murders of Norma and Maria Hurtado and the LGBT Rights Movement, is the focus of this episode. Despite monumental gains in legal equality over the past decade, the LGBTQ community still faces harsh disparities in physical and mental health, economic status, racial stratification, and hate crimes victimization. These factors compound for LGBTQ persons of color, low income individuals, immigrants, and members of the transgender community. In To Find a Killer — a finalist in the Writers' League of Texas 2021 Manuscript Contest for Nonfiction — Doug Greco explores the next phase of the LGBTQ rights movement and how issues of race, class, sexuality, gender identity, and economic status often intersect producing negative outcomes for members of the LGBTQ community. Beginning with a gripping, firsthand account of the 2011 anti-gay murder of twenty-four year-old Norma Hurtado, a student the Greco taught in an Austin high school ten years earlier, To Find a Killer employs a mix of narrative nonfiction and political analysis to uncover the intersectional nature of the disparities impacting the LGBTQ community. Drawing from his fifteen-years' experience as a grassroots organizer in Texas and California, Greco argues for the types of political organizations and public policies necessary to address these challenges. To Find a Killer charts a robust but pragmatic course for the LGBTQ movement today: investing in grassroots leadership development, rooting organizations in local civic and religious institutions, and focusing not just on legal equality, but a wider set of socio-economic issues. Why the removal of Prop 8 is important when same-sex marriage is legal

As we reported last week, Californians will get to vote in 2024 on whether to repeal Proposition 8, the state's dormant ban on same-sex marriage, once and for all. A new poll shows the repeal is likely to pass in a landslide, and LGBTQ leaders hope it will, to send a message to the rest of the country. 15 years ago, Californians narrowly approved Proposition 8, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. It was later found unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, legalizing gay marriage across the country. But that provision remains in the California Constitution, a kind of legal zombie line in the law, which means if this Supreme Court or a future one were to reverse its earlier ruling, same-sex marriage would again be outlawed in California. So the state legislature has put a measure on next year's ballot, to repeal Prop 8 and remove it from the Constitution. For more on this, KCBS poliwe are joined live today on the KCBS Ring Central Newsline by TONY HOANG, executive director of Equality California, the largest statewide LGBTQ rights organization in America.

Alright, back to China… they’re not happy with Nancy Pelosi… who is though? https://www.foxnews.com/world/china-furious-pelosi-lands-taiwan-promises-all-necessary-measures-defend-itself China furious after Pelosi lands in Taiwan, promises 'all necessary measures' to defend itself The People's Republic of China released a lengthy statement Tuesday condemning the arrival of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island of Taiwan. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs published the statement, in which the Chinese government accuses Pelosi, D-Calif., of undermining U.S.-China relations and encouraging the "separatist forces for ‘Taiwan independence.’" Pelosi landed in Taiwan late Tuesday night local time, making her the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit the island since Newt Gingrich in 1997. "This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and seriously infringes upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote. "There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China." The People's Republic of China has long claimed sovereignty over Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait, the relatively narrow strip of ocean between the island of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. The Chinese military has frequently sent planes into the area, testing Taiwan's air defense zone. The USS Ronald Reagan and a strike group are currently positioned near Taiwan after they left a port in Singapore on Tuesday. A Navy spokesperson confirmed the news but said it was a planned trip. Pelosi is traveling with a House delegation that includes Democratic Reps. Gregory Meeks of New York, Mark Takano of California, Suzan DelBene of Washington, Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois and Andy Kim of New Jersey. Here’s more from Fox News on this developing situation: China issues new threats after Pelosi lands in Taiwan-Play 0:52-2:30 The world awaits… it’s going to be interesting to see what our Lord has in store through this situation developing in Taiwan… Let’s shift our eyes back to the U.S. as Idaho is in the news… https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/justice/doj-sues-idaho-over-state-law-near-total-abortion-ban DOJ sues Idaho over law imposing 'near-total ban' on abortion The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Idaho over the state's law banning abortion after six weeks, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Tuesday. The legal filing marks the first time President Joe Biden's Justice Department launched a challenge against a state for abortion restrictions since the landmark June 24 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision overturned a half-century of abortion access precedent, which the president decried as a "realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic error by the Supreme Court." The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho, contends that the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act preempts the state law. The federal law requires physicians to perform medically stabilizing abortions in an emergency. Garland explained there are circumstances in which abortion is "necessary" if a patient is undergoing an unstable condition during pregnancy. Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta, who leads the reproductive rights task force, said the DOJ is seeking a declaratory judgment that Idaho's law "violates the supremacy clause of the United States Constitution and is preempted by federal law where it conflicts with EMTALA." The federal agency's lawsuit noted that the state has "passed a near-absolute ban on abortion,” which after taking effect on Aug. 25 will make it a criminal offense to perform an abortion “in all but extremely narrow circumstances.” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra also released a statement following the DOJ's announcement, saying the department will continue to partner with the DOJ to enforce federal laws protecting healthcare "including abortions." Meanwhile, the Idaho Supreme Court is slated to hear arguments Wednesday on challenges over its near-total abortion ban, according to the Idaho Press. Attorneys for Idaho will seek to protect three separate restrictive abortion laws passed by the state. Ladies and gentleman, please keep our state in your prayers as a legal battle takes center stage. We wish to see this abomination of abortion brought down in Idaho, and this would be a huge step. https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/01/health/california-newsom-state-of-emergency-monkeypox/index.html Elsewhere in the US, California and Illinois declare states of emergency over monkeypox outbreak This is from CNN. The governors of California and Illinois declared states of emergency to bolster their monkeypox vaccination efforts as the virus spreads nationwide. Monday's declarations come as more than 5,800 probable or confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in the US. California had more than 800 cases Tuesday, while Illinois had more than 500, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While the World Health Organization has declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, the Biden administration has not issued a nationwide public health emergency declaration. California is the third and largest state to issue a statewide declaration related to the disease. New York was the first to do so. California's move allows emergency medical services personnel throughout the state to administer FDA-approved monkeypox vaccines, expanding the pool of people able to inoculate residents against the virus even as a vaccine shortage persists. Illinois' declaration also will make more resources available to combat the virus, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said. The Chicago and state public health departments announced Illinois' first presumptive case June 2. Monkeypox is a poxvirus, related to smallpox, that usually causes pimple- or blister-like lesions, as well as flu-like symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle aches, chills and respiratory symptoms, according to the CDC. And guys, great news, I found out a great way to avoid Monkey Pox, here it is… don’t be gay! Be heterosexual, and find a godly man or woman to marry, and you’re home free! Yes I realize it’s probably not that simple. But anyways… California has received more than 61,000 vaccine doses so far and distributed more than 25,000, according to the governor's news release. Los Angeles County has received its own vaccine allocation, and state officials said California will make additional allocations in the coming weeks. Last week, Sodom… oh wait I mean, San Francisco became the first major US city to declare a local health emergency on monkeypox. Now hidden towards the bottom of CNN’s article is this following paragraph: “A large number of cases in this outbreak have been in men who have sex with men, including gay and bisexual men, and public health officials are focusing their prevention efforts on this group. The virus is not unique to this community, but the nature of its close-contact spread has led to a disproportionate impact.” Following the emergency declaration in California, Equality California, a major LGBT rights nonprofit organization, applauded the governor's move, noting in a statement that the virus "continues to disproportionately affect gay, bisexual and queer men here in California and across the country." Dr. Phillip Magness, the research and education director at the American Institute for Economic Research, shared a screenshot of a recent post from July 24 that Facebook fact-checked. “Independent fact-checkers reviewed the photo and said it was partly false,” the fact-check read. “Facebook added a notice to the post.” Magness called the fact-check “Orwellian.” “We live in an Orwellian hell-scape,” Magness posted. “Facebook is now ‘fact-checking’ anyone who questions the White House’s word-games about the definition of a recession.” Magness furthered his assertion in a recent Wall Street Journal (WSJ) op-ed that the U.S. is, in fact, in a recession, and that the Biden administration is trying to cover it up by “playing word games.” Newly released data shows the real GDP decreased at an annual rate of 0.9% in the second quarter of 2022, marking the second consecutive quarter of negative GDP growth. While the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) uses several factors to determine whether the U.S. is in a recession, economist Julius Shiskin wrote in 1974 that two consecutive quarters of declining GDP is a good rule of thumb to define a recession, with that definition becoming somewhat of a standard. The White House has gone out of its way to deny that the economy is in a recession, with President Joe Biden declaring Thursday the state of the economy “doesn’t sound like a recession.” The White House also posted a blog that said the NBER indicated there is a “strong growth in the U.S. economy” and therefore the current state of things does not indicate a recession. Things have become so confusing that Wikipedia had to place a pause on editing the term “recession” after the definition was altered 41 times within roughly one week. Users repeatedly deleted the technical definition that described a recession as having two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. So, you guys know me… I love to end my segments with my favorite topic, sports! Well today I’m not going to talk about sports, I’m going to talk about NASCAR. Oh zinger! The virus is not unique to this community, but the nature of its close-contact spread has led to a disproportionate impact.” Following the emergency declaration in California, Equality California, a major LGBT rights nonprofit organization, applauded the governor's move, noting in a statement that the virus "continues to disproportionately affect gay, bisexual and queer men here in California and across the country." Hey speaking of gays, are you being discriminated against at your work place because you hold to the Bible? Then you need to talk to my friends at RedBalloon.work. Dr. Oh zinger! Now I know… I know… your body goes through a lot of stress in NASCAR, I get it… let’s just get into the story… Ty Dillon After Getting Run Over By Kyle Larson: “Luckily The Good Lord Was Keeping An Eye Out For Me, Keeping Me Safe” Ty Dillon thanked God for keeping him safe after Kyle Larson slammed into during the events of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Larson ran over Dillon going around 170 mph coming into the sharp right hand turn 1. As Larson attempted to make the corner with Dillon on his outside, he launched over the curb into Dillon’s door. Kyle Larson has issue, slams into Ty Dillon at Indy- Play 1:35-2:26 Well Thank God both drivers were okay. The situation led many in the LGBTQ community to question if overturning such a foundational section of privacy law in the United States could lead to a patchwork of laws in Republican states that roll back the community's rights. State Sen. On this latest episode of On the Job With PORAC, PORAC President Brian Marvel and Vice President Damon Kurtz host a Zoom discussion with Paul Mitchell and Evan McLaughlin of Redistricting Partners to examine California's redistricting process and what the future of the state's lines look like.   ABOUT REDISTRICTING PARTNERS Redistricting Partners has been working for the last 10+ years on redistricting, racially polarized voting analysis, California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) implementation, and mid-decade redistricting work, primarily in California, for the past decade, with GIS and political experience that goes back more than 20 years. Redistricting Partners was formed with a focus on engaging in the statewide redistricting process under the new California Redistricting Commission in 2011. This work quickly moved into local municipal redistricting, advising and implementing transitions from at-large election systems to districted election systems for dozens of community college districts throughout the state. For the last decade, much of our work has been with cities, community college districts, school boards and other kinds of agencies, such as hospital districts, water boards and other special districts. Our work has also extended to outside organizations working to ensure a fair redistricting process, and protect communities.  This includes groups like Equality California, who have sought to preserve the power of LGBTQ communities within redistricting. Redistricting Partners is headed by Paul Mitchell, a data consultant based in Sacramento. Mitchell has conducted the redistricting for more than 75 states, cities, school boards and community college districts, including the State of New York Independent Redistricting Commission, the Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission, the Long Beach Independent Redistricting Commission, commissions in Oakland, Berkeley and Mesa Az.  His firm's work on racially polarized voting analysis and demographics has aided dozens of agencies as they navigate the California and Federal Voting Rights Acts. Mitchell also works with nonprofit organizations, such as the Irvine Foundation, American Civil Liberties Union, the Advancement Project, Common Cause and others in building community engagement and working throughout California and Nationally on elections and voting issues, including advising in the State of New Mexico's inaugural redistricting commission, working with the State Ethics Committee on guidelines for commissioners and evaluating the final maps.  In total, Mitchell and his firm has worked in more than 15 states around the country advising on statewide redistricting. Mitchell has been regularly cited in the media as an expert on elections and redistricting, including as the subject of a CNN Presents special on the decennial redistricting process, being interviewed on the PBS News Hour election coverage in 2020, participating in the 538 Podcast series on redistricting reform, and as a regular analyst on California-based network TV election coverage. For the past 10 years, Mitchell has also served as Vice President of the bi-partisan Political Data Inc where he works with both political parties, campaigns, nonprofits and universities, with a specialty in polling and survey data. Mitchell earned his associate degree from Orange Coast College, an undergraduate from American University, and a Master's in Public Policy from USC. Vice President of Redistricting Partners, Evan McLaughlin most recently served as Chief of Staff to California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, where he managed legislative efforts to expand voting rights and empower underrepresented communities. Before his work in the State Capitol, McLaughlin was Political and Legislative Director at the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, where he advised a coalition of community organizations in the region on the statewide, county and city redistricting processes that took place in 2011. In 2020 he led a project of analyzing potential districting plans under a California Voting Rights Act conversion and working with a coalition of agencies to help them understand the impacts of potential scenarios. Jack Lorenz, like so many of us, graduated from college with no idea what he wanted to do with his life. While working as a bartender, a customer asked him to handle the finances for a new production company. This turned out to be the beginning of a career making movies; overseeing production at major studios like Sony and Universal, until he was called to work in the field of social justice.  Jack spent 12 years as the Executive Director of the Gatekeeper Foundation, and four years as Director of Programs and Development at Equality California. He is now at The Alliance For Housing and Healing as Director of Development and Communications. The Alliance For Housing and Healing provides the basic necessities of life to men, women, children, and families living with HIV/AIDS through a safety net of essential housing and direct supportive services.  We talk about finding his life’s work and the crucial need for services like this with the homeless population in California.

Billie Lee featured on Bravo TV’s hit series “Vanderpump Rules” and the newest official face of the luxury hair care company Regenix Hair talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Born and raised in Indiana Billie moved to California where she began her journey as a stylist working with many both in and outside of the entertainment industry. After finding success as a stylist Billie wanted to move on and create a place where people could find peace in their daily lives among the hectic city. She soon opened an organic cafe which she owned and operated for two years before she sold it in order to move forward in her LGBTQ activism. Since activism as we all know doesn’t pay very well she knew she needed to seek employment and it was then that she was introduced to Lisa Vanderpump who hired her as a hostess at her famed West Hollywood restaurant SUR. Billie Lee now together with Regenix has launched the “Billie Lee Bundle”, Billie's favorite damage control products and they're giving a portion of the proceeds to benefit Equality California. They'll be releasing a campaign later this year entitled "Beauty Has No Gender." We talked to Billie about her fabulous career from transgender role model to her gig on “Vanderpump Rules” and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what she hopes to accomplish with her work Billie Lee stated, “ My work as an activist, I think it’s really important to be visible. So I think I’m doing my job by working at a restaurant on TV. At the same time personally I need to make money but as an activist I think it’s really important for trans people to be visible and also show people in America, the viewers that trans people are worthy of jobs and I feel like I’m doing that. I’m on the board of Equality California and I really try to speak for my community, be there for my community and be visible.” After Billie Lee was first introduced by Tinder as their new “transgender” app feature she has been a spokesperson and model for our LGBTQ community. Currently she is on the board of Equality California and Trans Life LA, a non-profit which helps bring health and wellness to the trans community in the area. Besides appearing on “Vanderpump Rules” Billie Lee continues to work in the trans community to create content that aims to educate about trans issues and on her new campaign with Regenix Hair. For More Info: itsmebillielee.com Hear 450+ LGBT Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES

Hears the needs of those around her and can't help but feel the need to improve it. Who stands tall with all her sisters and brothers of all races, religions, and creeds and hopes to support them in their dream of becoming a part of this amazing melting pot we call home. Who will fight for the needs of all the people, not just the select few who already have it all and want to exploit us just so they can have a little more. She hopes for a strong education for all of our children and young adults, no matter their upbringing or where they live. She believes in the armed forces of this union but feels that many of these brave woman and men don't have the support the need once they return home. And she won't sit by and watch this country be broken apart by the very people who are sworn to serve the public.   Jobs and Wages: There is a significant problem with disproportionate income distribution leading to stagnant wages which have not kept up with the cost of living.  The minimum wage MUST be increased. (Read more.) Healthcare: Healthcare in the United States has been broken for far too long. The ACA was a good starting point, but we need to go further and make Medicare-for-all a reality. (Read more) Immigration: Almost all Americans are immigrants.  We came here looking for a better life, hoping this land would care for us, and that dream hasn't changed. We need to create better, more streamlined legal paths to become citizens.  The American dream does not diminish the more who become a part of it: It only grows stronger. (Read more) Agriculture: Given the recent demand for water in California, and the subsequent effect of groundwater levels, it is imperative that we be proactive to incentivize more efficient use of land and water resources.  I propose tax cuts and further subsidies for farms that work to be more ecologically friendly. (Read more) Infrastructure: One of the most important but least sexy issues facing the USA. We need to find a way to repair and modernize our infrastructure without breaking the bank.  We need to invest in better technology, especially for dams and bridges. Science: We find ourselves facing one the largest problems of the past 200 years in the form of widespread science denial. Science has made our country what it is today, from the Wright brothers taking flight and JFK's challenge to one day go to the moon, we now having robots operating on other worlds. We can not lose this love of the unknown and quest to do and create the next big thing. (Read more) Criminal Justice: We live in a time when the criminal justice system is broken. We currently incarcerate more people than any other place in the world: 2,000,000 + people.  That's more than the population of New Mexico! We need to shift from punishment to rehabilitation whenever possible and disincentivize prisons from keeping people in the system by making all prisons non-profit. (Read more) Equality: California's own anti-discrimination laws should serve as a template for the entire country, at the federal level. (Read more) Support for the Arts:  America has some of the lowest per capita funding for the arts. I propose not only restoring, but expanding the National Endowment for the Arts. (Read more) Links:  Terra Snover: https://terrasnover.com/ Terra Snover Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/terra.snover  Vote Terra Snover page: https://www.facebook.com/VoteTerraSnover/ Obsidian Shell: http://obsidianshell.com/ Dimland Radio: https://www.facebook.com/DimlandRadio  Thanks as always for listening  Orion's belt is made up of just 3 stars....don't you think that's a complete waist of space? North Carolina’s House Bill 2, better known as the “Bathroom Law”, has taken center stage and has created a great debate. On March 23, 2016, Gov. Pat McCrory signed the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, also known as House Bill 2 or HB2. The law bans people from using bathrooms that don't match the sex indicated on their birth certificates, which opponents argue is discriminatory toward the transgender community. Supporters of the new law say it is a safety and privacy issue, protecting women and children from men who use the law as a pretense to deliberately enter the wrong restroom. Legislation involving the transgender community is not only happening in the state of North Carolina, but Mississippi and Tennessee have pushed similar legislation as well. On Lawyer 2 Lawyer, hosts J. Craig Williams and Bob Ambrogi join Ilona Turner, legal director at the Transgender Law Center, Andrew Beckwith, president of the Massachusetts Family Institute and Professor Katie Eyer from Rutgers Law School as they take a look at North Carolina's HB2 controversy, reaction, litigation surrounding HB2, anti-LGBT discrimination bills and LGBT protections nationally, and the quest for equal rights for the transgender community. Ilona Turner was a staff attorney at the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), where her work frequently focused on issues affecting transgender clients. She previously practiced law at Cohen, Weiss, & Simon LLP in New York City, representing unions, union-run health and retirement plans, and employees. In the early 2000s she worked as the lobbyist for Equality California, where she helped to shepherd groundbreaking legislation that prohibited housing and employment discrimination against transgender people and dramatically expanded the rights of domestic partners in California. Andrew Beckwith is a graduate of Gordon College and the University of Minnesota Law School. Andrew is a judge advocate in the United States Marine Corps Reserve where he holds the rank of major. He has also served as an immigration trial attorney for the Boston office of the Department of Homeland Security. Katie Eyer joined the Rutgers law faculty as an assistant professor in June 2012. Katie also litigated civil rights cases prior to entering academia full time, and secured a number of precedents in the Third Circuit expanding the legal rights of LGBT and disabled employees.
