Episode 158 - Freedom's Path, The Story of Salem Chapel and the Underground RailroadDo you have a significant historical landmark in your community - have you spent time there? Well I did. I spent time at the last stop of the Underground Railroad, where black slaves seeking freedom found community, safety and the true freedom they desired. I had the honour to sit in this small chapel and to let the walls and the wood pews tell me about the history of this lighthouse of freedom.WELCOME TO THE SALEM CHAPEL SANCTUARY OF HISTORYPeople of African descent began settling in the St. Catharines, Ontario area around 1788 and they brought their religion with them. Many were followers of Rev. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Wesley was a staunch abolitionist and advocated for the end of slavery and the slave trade. Many of the freedom seekers that relocated to this area were also followers of Bishop Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC).An AMEC Society was established in St. Catharines, Ontario between 1814 and 1820. A small chapel was built to serve the faithful in the Queenston Street area. When construction on the first Welland Canal began (1824-1829) in their neighbourhood, members of the Black community relocated to the under developed area of Geneva and North Streets. In 1835, they purchased property on North Street from abolitionist businessmen William Hamilton Merritt and Oliver Phelps to build a new AMEC. This church would be the second in St. Catharines and it would hold about 70 members. In 1837, the St. Catharines group sent a petition to the AMEC New York Conference asking for pastoral care and to be received into the AMEC Connection. As a result of this action, AMEC missionaries stationed in Upper Canada were instructed to "regulate the existing Societies, organize more in other regions and also communicate that they shall be subject to the order of the Bishops, and amendable to the Annual Conference of the New York District." One year later, the New York AMEC Conference organized a church in St. Catharines with forty members and two local preachers. The church was named Bethel Chapel. In less than a generation this Methodist group would out grow the second church. The Black community inSt. Catharines began to increase immediately after the US Congress passed the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Thousands of free and escaped African Americans living in the Northern States moved to various parts of Canada West to secure their safety and freedom. The new fugitive slave laws also caused thousands of fleeing enslaved African Americans to settle in Canada. In order to accommodate the influx of new comers, the AMEC congregation in St. Catharines decided to build a larger church. Resident freedom seekers began to construct the third church in October 1853. On November 4, 1855 the new AMEC was opened and publicly "dedicated to the Service of Almighty God" by Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne. In less than one year (September 1856), most of the Canadian AME Churches would separate from the AMEC Conference in the US and establish the British Methodist Episcopal Church (BMEC). This was partly due to the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Most of the AME Church members in Canada refused to attend Conference in the US because of the fugitive slave laws. They also wanted to identify themselves more closely with the country that granted them their freedom and equal rights. As a Methodist meeting house, from its early beginnings the AMEC in St. Catharines hosted anti-slavery lectures, civic protests and provided shelter and aid to the newly arrived freedom seekers until the end of the Civil War. Send us a textToday on the PRmoment Podcast we're talking to co-founders of CommsClarity Paul Hender and Richard Bagnall. These 2 are stalwarts of the PR measurement and evaluation game. They've worked together on and off at the likes of Metrica, Cision and Carma for the last over 30 years! And today on the show they are going to be chatting about what is the data opportunity for PR firms?Fittingly given today's podcast's theme we've just launched our PR Masterclass: The Intersection of Data, Planning and Measurement. Attend this PR Masterclass to hear from experts on the latest techniques, tools and case studies about the use of data in modern communications. The other big news in public relations is that the PRmoment Awards 2025 are open. All the categories, the updated entry form and the 2025 entry pack can be viewed on the awards microsite. Also, thanks so much to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors the PRCA.3 mins Why is it an interesting and important time for the intersection of data and PR?“There's a perfect storm of the need to use data better in PR.”“There is an increasing cynicism about last click attribution.”“There is this extraordinary evolution revolution of the the media”“AI is disrupting the media analysis place.”“Brands are going to live and die on this.”“People are taking all these data points and throwing them at the wall and hoping some of the mud sticks.”8 mins Over the last 10 years many of the legacy media monitoring firms attempted to build something resembling a one stop shop for data. How successful have they tended to be in that strategy? “What evaluation isn't is templated counting amounts of easy to capture data points.”14 mins There are so many PR tools now. Indeed many of them are not specific tools to PR. How can PR folks navigate that media monitoring, social listening, audience integration, misinformation and emotion tool market?Editors note: Golin's Jonny Bentwood will present his PR Tools Review at PRmoment PR Masterclass in February. (Masterclass 4)19 mins Has the number of PR tools and media intelligence being bought increased? And is that investment being spent wisely?20.30 mins How big do agencies tend to be before they bring in either a head of analytics or an analytic team?“Every agency needs to be able to talk with confidence about data and analytics and the value of its work - and if it can't do that it doesn't have a very bright future.”22 mins What are PR firms doing with their data? What does good data use by a PR firm look like?26 mins Should PR firms buy data tools or build them?30 mins Why the problem of PR people becoming overwhelmed in data is huge.32 mins PR's integration of data challenge: How are we doing? With a nod to AMEC's Integrated Evaluation Framework. “The whole concept of absolutism has to go out the window. You can't just chuck out data points. That's where derision happens.”37 mins Data storytelling is one of PRs words of the moment. How does that compare with the reality that PR remains in many ways an art form?

In this episode I interview the person that has inspired me the most in my career; Gary Preston. Gary is the founder of CoverageBook, AnswerThePublic and the new (free) PR measurement tool ‘CoverageImpact'. We discuss how the last 15 years of working together in marketing and the last 10 years of Gary being a successful software founder in the PR industry has led to the launch of this new PR tool. In a time when PR budgets are being cut and in-house teams are admitting its often down to lack of confidence in measurement, Gary believes its time for a step-change in the way the industry showcases PR activity outcomes. He also believes this should be accessible to everyone and not just those that can afford high-level measurement and analytics support... Could this new free graph-generator tool that showcases PR outcomes be the answer to the PR industry's biggest problem? Listen this interview and make your decision! www.CoverageImpact.com Special Guest: Gary Preston .

0:00 -- Intro.1:38-- About this podcast's sponsor: The American College of Governance Counsel.2:34 -- Start of interview.3:13 -- Mauro's "origin story." 4:11 -- About AMEC, and his time as CEO of the organization (2012-2017). Prior, he was Chairman of IBGC (2008-2010). "My first mission as CEO of AMEC was to become the first independent director at Petrobras" (which he served from 2013 to 2015).9:02 -- On the differences between shareholder engagement/activism in the U.S. and Brazil. 10:04 -- The corporate governance changes introduced by Novo Mercado (special listings segment created in Brazil in 2000).11:39 -- About the Petrobras corruption scandal ("Lava Jato" or "Car Wash"). He was the first independent director in Petrobras (2013) and they elected a second independent director in 2014. "1+1 in that situation equals 4." "The board simply did the Government's bidding." "But it's all gone now, there has been a huge backlash. There is no one in jail anymore." "Just like what happened in Italy with the Clean Hands Operation, there is a political wave of acquittals." "There was a class action settlement in the U.S. for $3.5 billion (2016) and PwC settled for $50 million (2018)."18:58 -- His joining the board of Vale (2021-2023), post Brumadinho dam disaster (2019). "I was elected to the board as part of an activist campaign, led by Capital Group." 23:28 -- On the SEC's action against Vale for greenwashing (settled in 2023 for $55.9 million). "Vale became a lightning rod and it is a rich company in a poor country and in a poor region of a poor country." "One executive of the company used the expression that was Vale is the peacock in the Favela." "[Vale] gets a lot of attention and focus and sometimes not fairly. It does some amazing things in terms of ESG." "Vale is actually an example that responsible mining is not only essential for the energy transition, but it actually can be good for the environment. But there's a lot of bad press around it."24:40 -- His take on ESG: "ESG should not be driven by rankings, reports and ratings. It must be driven by owners."28:50 -- On the ESG backlash. "Part of the problem has to do with the architecture of the institutional investors." "The productive way for investors to ensure that companies are doing the right thing is one-on-one engagements that cannot be done wholesale. It needs to be done in a more retail way. So this increases the value of specialized asset managers that have a smaller portfolio, that may or may not be called activists."32:11 -- On joining the board of Embraer. The impact of the Pandemic and 'work from home' in Brazil.34:55 -- On the evolving geopolitical landscape, China/US tensions and where Brazil stands in this picture. 39:17 -- On the role of independent directors, and evolution in Brazil in the last 20 years:"When you get into a situation like I was in Petrobras, you need to know where your red lines are and what to do when they're reached. You can fight and in some cases it may be the case that you need to leave and do a noisy withdrawal as I've done several times in my career so.""I fear that in many situations we have lots of companies reporting larger percentages of independent directors on their boards, but these are not really independent.""[You have to] be true to your values, know your red lines, but at the same time, try to work with people. And some things will not be the way you want. So a director who simply says no when the board goes in a way that he or she doesn't agree with is not going to be productive. So you have to, in Brazil we say we need to swallow some frogs every once in a while. You just have to watch out to make sure what are the sizes of frogs that you can swallow to make it for productive mandate on the board, but at the same time not compromising your values."43:44 -- On the question of single issue directors. "I think it's a big mistake for a number of reasons. First, because it's not enough space for all the issues to be on the boards. The other problem is that if you have a specialist on the board, say in cyber security, every time the issue of cyber security comes up, everybody will look at this guy and say, whatever he or she is telling us to do, you're outsourcing your fiduciary duty, which is terrible."45:45 -- "Brazil today has very different companies. This means that the governance structure for each one of them has to be different. And we have to understand, it's case by case, and we need to build the governance structures that are adequate to each company." "I think when we think about ESG, we're really talking about E&S, and people are forgetting the G. The G is what gets E&S done. E&S without the G is greenwashing."47:49 -- Book that has greatly influenced his life: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (2003)48:00 -- His mentors, and what he learned from them: André Jacurski and Paulo Guedes (founders of Banco Pactual).48:33 -- Quotes that he thinks of often or lives his life by: "We didn't come this far just to come this far"48:50 -- The living person he most admires: Bill Gates.Mauro Cunha is one of the top corporate governance voices in Latin America, currently serving as a director of Embraer, AES Brasil, Klabin and Hypera. He has also served on the boards of some of the most important companies in Brazil - including Vale, Petrobras, Eletrobras, among others. __This podcast is sponsored by the American College of Governance Counsel.__ You can follow Evan on social media at:Twitter: @evanepsteinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/epsteinevan/ Substack: https://evanepstein.substack.com/__You can join as a Patron of the Boardroom Governance Podcast at:Patreon: patreon.com/BoardroomGovernancePod__Music/Soundtrack (found via Free Music Archive): Seeing The Future by Dexter Britain is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License
Target the Right Prospects with Mike Maynard PR Series Today's guest is Mike Maynard, managing director and CEO of The Napier Group, a U.K.-based PR and Marketing agency for B2B technology companies. “A sequence of happy accidents” is how he describes his path to his role now. He started off studying engineering in college. After seeking more enjoyment, he ran a technical support team and later went into marketing at the same company. In 2001, during the market crash, he bought an agency, Napier. To prevent it shrinking and dying out, he went the extra mile for clients which made it the agency it is today. Today's episode discusses his unique career path, his tips for targeting the right prospects with account-based marketing, and his perspective on global PR trends. Some top tips … In the sales process, the most important thing is turning down the wrong prospects. The best relationships are ones in which you can do things for the client that no one else can and that you enjoy the relationship with the client. The PR industry struggles with being able to provide meaningful metrics. Mike recommends the AMEC framework, which takes into account the objectives, strategy, activity, outcomes, and impact. Account-based marketing is a hyper-focused approach to marketing in which you hand-select specific companies you want to work with and focus your efforts on them, not just specific sectors you want to work with but the exact companies. This is helpful for professional services businesses and others in which you build a working relationship with your client or there are only a few major companies in your market that move the needle. On the other hand, if you have a business that doesn't only have a few key players or your business is one in which you don't need a working relationship with your customer, then a mass market approach can be the right choice. Today, the ethics of your company is equally as important as what your company does and the features and benefits it provides. Communicating this matters from a PR perspective. This episode at a glance … >> [4:57 to 11:46] How to identify the right prospects for your business >> [11:47 to 13:48] How to identify the right tactics for your marketing efforts? >> [13:49 to 16:30] How the AMEC framework can help provide meaningful metrics dependent on the client. >> [16:31 to 18:23] Account-based marketing, why it's often a better method to find the right clients, and how to run an ABM campaign >> [18:24 to 19:33] When it makes sense to take a broad, mass marketing approach >> [19:35 to 27:18] The top global trends impacting PR and marketing, including the shift to a higher consumer focus on the ethics of a company more so than the product features and the pros and cons of using AI in PR. Welcome to the PRmoment Podcast. On the show today we're revealing the six key themes from AMEC's Measurement Summit 2023. To reveal those trends we have Steph Bridgeman, founder of Experienced Media Analysts and Richard Bagnall who is a co-managing partner of Carma. Before we start if you haven't taken a look already, the final entry deadline for The Creative Moment Awards is Friday 30th June. Thanks to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors, The PRCA.Here is a summary of what Steph and Richard PRmoment founder Ben Smith discussed:2 mins Theme One: Why earned media is value not vanity for brands. “The role earned can play in PESO”“There's nothing quite like an AMEC disco”“Paid is 4 times more expensive than it was 5 years ago, brands simply can't afford to put paid first anymore”5 mins PR people don't need to feel they are on the back foot with their data.7 mins Theme Two: The impact of AI on PR measurement“Learn how to ask better questions to get better answers”“The bulk of future content on the internet will be produced by AI, in turn, this content will train the next family of generative AI tools”“ The Gen Zers of today are probably the most insular group we've ever had”11 mins Where are we on the evolution of the accuracy of AI measurement?“It's incredibly powerful and impressive but it needs strong guardrails…you need to check everything, it's so compelling with what it produces you think it must be right but if you don't check it mistakes will follow.”14 mins Richard explains the copyright concerns with Generative AI.17 mins Theme Three: Programme logic models are here to stay.“If we want to demonstrate our measurement journey we have to move from outputs to outcomes”(PR) must as an industry avoid substitution error”Here is a link to AMEC Integrated Evaluation Framework that Richard and Steph discuss on the show The Integrated Evaluation Framework. And here is a link to the “AMEC Integrated Evaluation Framework Tutorial - which PRmoment has negotiated free access to for our readers/listeners for the next 60 days (normal cost £149 apparently, thank us later!) Discount code: PRMoment23And here is the link for the “AMEC Foundation course in Media Measurement & Evaluation.” Discount code: PRMoment2323 mins Theme Four: The importance of data storytelling“The importance of being interesting and useful!”“Don't have a data puke into your reports”“Can we find the one key insight that will guide our strategy”28 mins Theme Five: The importance of data confidence in public relations31 mins The difference between last-click attribution and contributionTheme Six: The importance of ongoing measurement education in PR and communications“The time for excuses is over”“Earned media's time is now”“We can't just count stuff”“We mustn't confuse counting and measuring activity (ie: being busy fools) with demonstrating value”37.30 mins Steph gives PR a 3/10 on its measurement journey in the last 5 years - but for some organisations, it's a 10/10.
In this episode I interview PR measurement experts, Richard Bagnall and Darryl Sparey on their latest joint research that explores the effects PR has on attracting investors and gain funding for tech start-ups. We delve into the research results including the types of business that see this success, the PR approach needed to gain these results and specifically how important a CEO or founder can be in the process. This conversation is fascinating, not just because of the correlation the research found between PR and financial funding but because both Darryl and Richard have so much experience in this area of PR work (b2b and reputation) and importantly how to measure it. Darryl is the MD and Co-Founder of performance-driven marketing and comms consultancy, Hard Numbers. Richard is the co-managing partner of evaluation firm CARMA. He's been awarded CIPR President's medal for his service to PR, he won the AMEC Don Bartholomew Award and of course was also the chair of AMEC between 2016-2022 too. Together they share wisdom and practical advice from their own experiences throughout the interview. We cover; - How they researched 64 startup unicorn businesses & analysed over 65,000 pieces of coverage - We look at the sectors that have the most potential for funding - Darryl shares tips on how best to work with busy senior leaders & why a ‘Get to text' approach is best - I challenge correlation vs causation in the results and Richard shares brilliant wisdom in how we can all apply these lessons to our own measurement plans. Special Guests: Darryl Sparey and Richard Bagnall.

Allison and James share how they work with clients to gain the data and tech they need upfront Allison also shares tips on how to get started, whether you're a small team looking to up-skill or planning to to build a data team within an agency Since the H&K data and analytics team has developed and established the agency has won the most amount of awards ever in a year.
