Guess who's back mit schwerem Gepäck!

This week we're discussing every album by the infamous Mayhem. While they are known for pioneering modern black metal in Norway, most people know them because of their horrific, bloody, and disturbing history. Seriously, if you're unfamiliar, grab some popcorn before you listen. Formed and led by Euronymous (Øystein Aarseth) until his murder by then bassist Varg Vikernes (of Burzum) in 1993, Mayhem continues to put out great albums with various lineups. However, they are held down by longtime drummer Hellhammer and bassist Necrobutcher. This band's music is as intense as their reputation, so get ready.Closing track: “Cursed in Eternity” from De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteChimera (2004) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) — Best AlbumEsoteric Warfare (2014) — Personal FavoriteChimera (2004) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Deathcrush EP (1987)De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994)Grand Declaration of War (2000)Chimera (2004)Ordo ad Chao (2007)Esoteric Warfare (2014)Daemon (2019)

Formed in 1984 in Oslo, Norway, the band has played a pivotal role in shaping the black metal genre and its associated subculture. Mayhem's music is characterized by its aggressive, raw, and dark sound, often featuring dissonant guitar riffs, frenzied drumming, and visceral vocals. The band's early lineup included iconic figures like Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, who was not only the founder and guitarist but also a central figure in the early Norwegian black metal scene, and Per "Dead" Ohlin, known for his disturbing stage presence and tragic suicide in 1991. Dead's suicide deeply impacted the band and contributed to their notorious reputation. Mayhem's notoriety also stems from various incidents, including the infamous burning of historic Norwegian stave churches and the murder of Euronymous by former member Varg "Count Grishnackh" Vikernes in 1993. These events garnered international attention and added to the band's aura of darkness and controversy. Despite these tumultuous occurrences, Mayhem's music and legacy have endured. Albums like "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" (1994) are considered classics of the black metal genre, influencing countless bands that followed. The band's imagery often draws from occult and macabre themes, adding to their mystique. Throughout their career, Mayhem has undergone numerous lineup changes and musical evolutions, all while maintaining a connection to their black metal roots. Their impact on extreme metal and underground music culture remains significant, making them a cornerstone of the Norwegian black metal scene and a symbol of its uncompromising and controversial spirit. Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin was a British rock band formed in 1968 that became one of the most influential and iconic bands in the history of rock music. The band consisted of four members: Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass/keyboard), and John Bonham (drums). Led Zeppelin is known for their innovative and powerful blend of blues, rock, folk, and psychedelia, which laid the groundwork for hard rock and heavy metal genres. There has been speculation and controversy surrounding Led Zeppelin's alleged involvement with the occult, particularly regarding guitarist Jimmy Page's interest in esoteric and mystical subjects. Page was known for his fascination with symbols, magic, and ancient mythology. He collected occult books, artworks, and artifacts, and he was also influenced by the teachings of famous occultist Aleister Crowley. Page purchased Crowley's former home, Boleskine House, and the band's record label, Swan Song Records, featured an image of an angel playing a trumpet from a design by Crowley. One of the most enduring aspects of the occult rumors is the alleged backward masking or "backmasking" in Led Zeppelin's music. Backmasking involves the insertion of hidden messages when a song is played in reverse. Some fans and critics claimed to have found messages related to the occult, Satanism, or even drug use when playing certain Led Zeppelin songs backward. The most famous example is the song "Stairway to Heaven," where a specific part of the lyrics is said to reveal hidden messages when reversed. However, the band members have consistently denied intentional involvement in such practices, attributing any perceived messages to coincidence or the imagination of listeners. It's important to note that while Led Zeppelin's members had an interest in mystical and symbolic subjects, and their imagery occasionally reflected these interests, the extent of any actual involvement with the occult is debatable. Much of the occult-related speculation surrounding the band is based on interpretations and theories that have been amplified over the years. Led Zeppelin's legacy primarily lies in their groundbreaking music and their impact on rock and roll. They released numerous iconic albums, including their self-titled debut, "Led Zeppelin II," "Led Zeppelin IV," and "Physical Graffiti," which featured hits like "Stairway to Heaven," "Whole Lotta Love," and "Black Dog." Their live performances were legendary for their energy and improvisation, contributing to their status as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Blink 182: Blink-182 is an American rock band that gained significant popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s. The band is known for their energetic pop-punk sound and catchy melodies. Blink-182 was formed in 1992 in Poway, California, and its original lineup consisted of Mark Hoppus (bass and vocals), Tom DeLonge (guitar and vocals), and Scott Raynor (drums). Travis Barker later replaced Raynor on drums. Tom DeLonge is one of the founding members of Blink-182 and played a crucial role in the band's success. He was known for his distinctive singing style and witty, often humorous, lyrics. DeLonge's guitar playing and vocal contributions helped shape the band's sound, which combined punk rock sensibilities with pop hooks. In addition to his work with Blink-182, Tom DeLonge developed an interest in various side projects and ventures. One of his notable endeavors outside of music was his fascination with UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) and extraterrestrial life. DeLonge's interest in UFOs eventually led him to launch the To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science (TTSA) in 2017. The TTSA is an organization that aims to explore and research various topics related to UFOs, advanced technology, and potential interactions with non-human intelligence. Through the TTSA, DeLonge has advocated for increased transparency and government disclosure of information regarding UFO sightings and encounters. He has stated that his interest in UFOs was inspired by personal experiences and a desire to uncover the truth behind these phenomena. It's important to note that the field of UFO research can be controversial and is often met with skepticism from the scientific community. Tom DeLonge's involvement with UFO research has brought attention to the topic and sparked discussions about the possibility of extraterrestrial life and advanced technologies beyond our current understanding. His efforts have also prompted conversations about the need for rigorous scientific investigation in this field.
On the song “Freezing Moon,” lead singer of Mayhem howls,“Diabolic shapes float by/Out from the dark/I remember it was here I died”. It's an oddly prophetic line, considering two members of the band would be dead by 1994, the year the album was finally released. Mayhem was central to the Norwegian black metal scene and most of the members were a part of the Black Circle. The Black Circle was a loosely organized group of black metal musicians who set about burning down churches and committing petty crimes across Norway. Stoked by two demagogues, the group told the public that their motive was to antagonize the Christian church and to do as much evil as possible. Last week, we set the stage. Robert Johnson was a Blues singer in the 1930s who was said to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his talent. He died, inexplicably, at the age of 27, right at the peak of his fame. No one has been able to confirm the cause of his death, so the rumor of his Luciferian trade lives on. Musicians are often accused of worshiping the devil by conspiracy theorists and moral purists alike. Whether it's true, is usually left up to the listener. Today, though, we'll be discussing a group of musicians who admitted to their evil intentions from the moment they picked up a guitar and the impact of their actions would be felt by the community for decades to come. Join us now for part one of this diabolical true story.Sources:Lords of Chaos by Michael Moynihan and Didrik SøderlindBlack Metal: Evolution of the Cult by Dayal Pattersonhttps://www.musicgenreslist.com/metal-music-genre/https://www.allmusic.com/artist/mayhem-mn0000335302/biographyhttps://metalinjection.net/black-metal-chronicles/black-metal-history-month/an-illustrated-history-of-corpse-painthttps://www.last.fm/music/Mayhem/+wikihttps://www.villagevoice.com/until-the-light-takes-us-a-norwegian-black-metal-documentary/https://www.macrotrends.net/states/minnesota/murder-homicide-rate-statisticshttps://knoema.com/atlas/Norway/Homicide-rate#:~:text=In%202021%2C%20homicide%20rate%20for,per%20100%2C000%20population%20in%202021.Follow us, campers!Patreon (join to get all episodes ad-free, at least a day early, an extra episode a month, and a free sticker!): https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeCampfireFacebook: True Crime CampfireInstagram: https://gramha.net/profile/truecrimecampfire/19093397079Twitter: @TCCampfire https://twitter.com/TCCampfireEmail: truecrimecampfirepod@gmail.comMERCH! https://true-crime-campfire.myspreadshop.com/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4251960/advertisement

In the Sign of Evil. In the Sign of Evil. Para 2007, Sodom saca su disco The Final Sign of Evil. This week three films about moral panics, the imagined threats lurking to upset social order from morality police happy to stoke public fear for a payout. A harmless game played by a group of college students. Nothing wrong with any of it... except... what if the game goes too far? What if an obviously schizophrenic player with a history of unresolved family trauma has a sudden and immediate break from reality while playing? It MUST be the game's fault and not anything else. I said, NOT ANYTHING ELSE, okay? Tom Hanks, in the brief period between Bosom Buddies and Splash, acts his little TV movie loving heart out while being corrupted by MAZES & MONSTERS. A fictionalized account of the rise of Norwegian Black Metal. Euronymous and his band Mayhem create a new subgenre that is eagerly devoured, by not just local youth, but globally. When the band is derailed by a tragedy, they regroup opening a record shop that is also a social hub for their growing brand of music. It isn't long until everything goes wrong and the dark edge of their music leads to arson and murder. Based on the book of the same name, titled after a group not connected to the events depicted here, Lords of Chaos. Billy Tipton was a jazz musician, talent agent, caring husband and doting father. When Billy died, a closely guarded secret was revealed, and his life was spun and reframed by tabloids and talk shows in the very LGBT unfriendly late-1980s. A meta-biographical documentary about both Tipton and some more modern trans masculine experiences. Layered revelations and personal interpretations try to reframe Billy's life and legacy from the sensationalist view that has dominated it in the decades after his death. A film about trying to have an ordinary life while being No Ordinary Man. All that and Tyler wears corpse paint, Dave gets his musical theater on, and Kevin casts a wide net in the cinematic ocean. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Norway's Black Metal music scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s brought together young men who, giving themselves nicknames like Necro Butcher and Hell Hammer, aimed to shock and act out more than make music, But the hijinks gave way to arson, suicide and murder, with the band Mayhem and its pschopathic leader Euronymous […]

Murder and Mayhem in Norway: The Norwegian Black Metal scene of the late 80s and early 90s was an infamous place of young men trying to outdo one another in a quest to prove who was most evil. From church arsons to murder, they would revel in their notoriety, affecting airs of inhumanity while behind the scenes, it was tearing the musicians and bands apart. Things finally came to a head on August 10, 1993 when the man many considered to be the heart of the scene,Øystein Aarseth, better known as Euronymous, was found stabbed to death in the stairwell of his 4th floor apartment in Oslo. From the depths of Scandanavia comes the crimes of the black metal community. While many members of black metal bands are simply musicians with corpse-like stage personas and a taste for darker ambiance, some took the imagery and sometimes violent lyrical content of their songs too seriously and made them a reality. Part 2 of the Mayhem series- Matt Cooper and Joel Benner discuss the murder of Euronymous by the one and only, Varg "Count Grichnackh" Vikernes. #vargvikernes #Mayhem #euronymous
Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Known for dark lyrics, controversial ideologies, shocking and boundary pushing live performances, the black metal scene was tendentious at best. However, there is one black metal band that ensured they stood out from all the rest. Mayhem. Join Lisa, Matt and Jules as we walk through the sordid history of one black metals most infamous bands. Were Varg Vikernes and Øystein Aarseth, known by their stage names Count Grishnackh and Euronymous, two men who let their black metal personas get the best of them? Was the night of August 10th, 1993 a planned murder to further elevate Mayhems infamy or a frenzied attack in self defense? Was an eye for an eye met? On this episode of Movies, Murder & Mayhem, I talk about the true story behind Lords of Chaos (2018). The black metal band Mayhem and it's founder Euronymous were at the forefront of the underground Norwegian black metal scene, but like with most extreme subcultures, violence soon erupted.
Presented by Ghosted.com Joel Benner on HIS show The Joel Iconoblast Show is joined by Matt Cooper to discuss the story of "Dead". A member of the band Mayhem. #Mayhem #blackmetal #Euronymous
Allyson loves True Crime, so Mike was positive she was going to enjoy 2018's Lords of Chaos about the murder of Mayhem guitarist and founder Euronymous by the hands of his bandmate Count Grishnak. And spoiler alert, Mike was right! Allyson and Mike sing the praises of the acting in this film, particularly by Rory Culkin, Jack Kilmer and Ethan Cohen. All three were born around the exact time this story takes place, but all three actors perfectly capture the dynamics of the late 80s/early 90s black metal scene. Is so insanely opposite of his good natured and sweet role in the romantic masterpiece Brooklyn. We read the 1997 classic, Varsgmal, a manifesto on Norwegian cultural destiny written by the infamous Norwegian black metal artist, Varg Vikernes. Varg was the bass guitarist for Mayhem, one of the most influential bands in the black metal genre, on their first album before he murdered his bandmate, Euronymous. In addition to the murder of Euronymous, Varg was also convicted for the burning of several Christian churches. Whilst in prison, Varg produced music under the name Burzum and wrote this manifesto, Vargsmal, exploring Norwegian race politics, national destiny and advocating the return to pre-Christian heathen culture.

As the darkness descends on the Halloween of 2021, me and Nathan thought we would treat you to an evening with the most harrowing tales to come out of the metal scene. What better way to spend it than to discuss the black metal stories from Norway in the 90s. Watch us delve into Varg and Euronymous, the list of churches burned and much more.
TRIGGER WARNING: This episode features discussion of suicide, murder and homophobia. Listener discretion is advised. This episode features stories from the early Norwegian Death Metal scene. It includes the suicide of Dead, the murder of Euronymous and the main church burnings committed by the fanbase. A special thanks to Evelyn (she/her), Morgan (they/she) and Oscar (he/him) for their commentary. Intro and outro music is Petenera performed by Oscar Cantua (he/him). What would you be willing to do to cement your legacy in music history? Before we look into that question, Bailey is going to tell us about a tree. That has more legal sovereignty than a lot of Americans do.After that, Ben introduces us to a Danish explorer (among other things) Peter Freuchen. His entire life could be a standalone episode of Weird Shit, so Ben picked his favorite anecdote about the time Freuchen survived an avalanche because of a bowel movement. And lastly, Ian keeps it in Scandinavia but fast forwards to the early 90s, when the infamous genre of black metal formed, and then escalated. If you wanted the respect of your peers as a black metal musician, you needed to do more than write Satanic lyrics and paint your face.Let's get weird.Make sure to follow @CultTalkNet on Instagram, Twitter, Patreon, Facebook, and TikTok for more Groovy and Weird content!
Mayhem started in the 1980s from a guy named Oystein Aarseth whose stage name became Euronymous. It all started so fantastically....what transpired was the MegaGod's of Black Metal would go into dark territory, not only would the face of their band, the lead singer, Dead (Per Ohlin) commit suicide in a brutal way but the guitarist that Euronymous himslelf hired, Varg Vikernes wound up killing him, in a move he claimed was in self defense. Follow me through the tour of the band from inception to explosion, finally ending with the collaboration with a new singer from Hungary named Atilla Csihar who I interview at the end. Minute 45:00 is when Atilla comes on he talks about his new CBD project, new poppy infused liqueurs (50:00) , frustration with covid music is in his blood (101:00), his favorite bands (1:10:00) heavy US fees for European bands (1;18:00) and so much more. He was a great interview and it really adds a dynamic aspect to the whole Mayhem story.
The soft whispering truth by Lingua Lustra.
