Reviving Gage & Tollner and Reinventing Tropical Cocktails | St. John Frizell & Garrett Richard

Recorded live before an audience at Sunken Harbor Club in Brooklyn. Why This Episode MattersGage & Tollner's revival is more than a preservation story. St. John Frizell and Garrett Richard show how historic restaurants and classic cocktails can be restored, reinterpreted, and made relevant. The ConversationThe live conversation opens with Mark admitting that it took him several meetings to realize writer St. John Frizell and bartender “Sinjin” Frizell were the same person. Francis recalls Garrett recognizing The Restaurant Guys at Tales of the Cocktail, back when being recognized in public was still a notable event. From there, St. John tells the improbable story of finding Gage & Tollner's landmarked interior beneath the remains of a TGI Fridays, an Arby's, and a makeshift mall. He explains how 450 crowdfunding investors helped revive the historic Brooklyn oyster and chophouse and how the restaurant was preparing to open when COVID closed New York.Garrett traces Sunken Harbor Club from a weekly pop-up to one of the country's most distinctive cocktail bars. He explores forgotten tropical formats, historic steakhouse drinks, the challenge of creating serious non-alcoholic cocktails, and the timelessness of the Martini. The conversation also reaches Charles H. Baker Jr., his amazing life and the idea that a great drink can be built as much on story and context as on the recipe itself.Timestamps00:00 Live from Sunken Harbor Club02:00 St. John, Sinjin and a James Bond pronunciation lesson04:00 Garrett's first encounter with The Restaurant Guys05:30 The opening cocktails and Sunken Harbor's menu philosophy08:30 Gage & Tollner prepares to open as COVID closes New York11:00 How the Sunken Harbor Club began as a weekly pop-up14:00 Finding Gage & Tollner behind false walls17:00 Raising $450,000 from 450 crowdfunding investors20:00 Reconstructing forgotten cocktails and the Cross Current25:30 Historic steakhouse drinks meet tropical cocktails30:30 Why serious non-alcoholic cocktails are so difficult42:00 Martinis, Charles H. Jena Derman and Jack Schramm are the Brooklyn-based cofounders of Solid Wiggles, the cocktail jelly company that turned the Jell-O shot into a legitimate art form—and a legitimate cocktail. Their debut book is a full system for making layered, clarified, beautifully decorated cocktail jellies at home, from quick party animal shots to three-day party pro cakes with injected flowers and glitter. Jena comes from Momofuku Milk Bar; Jack from Booker and Dax and Existing Conditions. Together they're making the case for the solid cocktail—and that parties matter. Also on the show I spend some time with Carolyne Lane, director of coffee at Noma Projects. Have a comment or question? Click this sentence to send us a message, and we might answer it in a future episode.Welcome to Season 6, Episode 8 of Winning Isn't Easy. In this episode, we'll dive into Pre-Existing Conditions and Cooperation Clauses: The Hidden Minefields in Long-Term Disability Policies.ERISA disability claims are often decided by the fine print most people never notice. Pre-existing condition clauses, cooperation requirements, and requests for financial documentation give insurance carriers multiple ways to delay, deny, or terminate benefits - even when the medical condition itself is clearly disabling. Insurers don't just evaluate the diagnosis; they examine policy timelines, how well claimants respond to information requests, and whether every requirement in the policy has been followed. Small technical missteps can quietly become the basis for a denial. In this episode, we break down three common pressure points in ERISA disability claims. First, we look at how pre-existing condition provisions can shape outcomes, including situations involving conditions like multiple sclerosis. Next, we explain how cooperation clauses can trap claimants when insurers demand ongoing information or documentation. Finally, we discuss the financial records carriers may request - and how failing to provide them can put benefits at risk. By the end, you'll understand why success under ERISA often depends not just on proving disability, but on carefully navigating the policy's fine print. In this episode, we'll cover the following topics:One - Pre-Existing Conditions and ERISA Disability ClaimsTwo - Cooperation Clauses and Claim DenialsThree - Financial Documentation and Cooperation RequirementsWhether you're a claimant, or simply seeking valuable insights into the disability claims landscape, this episode provides essential guidance to help you succeed in your journey. Millions are still living with the effects of Long COVID and new research shows that for older adults, the consequences may be profound and lasting. In part one of a special two-part series on “Conversations on Health Care,” Dr. Gabriel de Erausquin, a neurologist and leading Long COVID researcher at the University of Texas Health San Antonio, shares groundbreaking findings from his global study of over 3,500 patients. His work reveals a troubling connection: many Long COVID patients over 60 show cognitive decline that mirrors early signs of dementia.“The parts of the brain that are affected by COVID overlap significantly with those that are affected early in the course of Alzheimer's….the changes overlap, but they are not identical.”His team is now studying brain imaging and biomarkers to understand the link between COVID-related cognitive decline and traditional neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease.Dr. de Erausquin also explains how persistent loss of smell — a hallmark COVID symptom — may be the strongest predictor of ongoing cognitive issues, and how genetic sequencing is helping uncover inherited risk.He highlights a dual reality: while many Long COVID patients show biological changes, others had prior diagnoses of depression, anxiety, or chronic fatigue — a nuance often missing from public conversations.Click to hear the full conversation with hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter.“Originally aired on May 15, 2025”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In today's episode of Hilary Topper on Air, learn how to prevent injuries and alleviate existing conditions with an expert, Craig DiGiovanni, CEO of Medi-Dyne Healthcare Products.  Here are some of the questions I asked him: Could you start by giving us an overview of Medi-Dyne and how it has evolved to support triathletes and endurance athletes? What are some common issues you see regarding injury prevention and recovery, and how do your products specifically address these challenges? Chafing is a significant concern for endurance athletes, especially during long races. Can you tell us about the 2Toms SportShield and how it works to prevent chafing? What's the difference between 2Toms SportShield and the SportShield XTRA? In what scenarios would an athlete prefer the XTRA version? How should triathletes incorporate SportShield into their race day preparation to avoid discomfort and skin irritation? Calf injuries and tightness are common issues for runners and triathletes. Can you explain how the ProStretch Plus Adjustable Calf and Foot Stretcher helps with stretching and injury prevention? How does the ProStretch Plus differ from traditional stretching techniques, and why is it more effective in treating conditions like calf strains or plantar fasciitis? Many athletes deal with tight calves due to the repetitive nature of running and cycling. How often should they be using the ProStretch Plus to maintain flexibility and avoid injury? Plantar fasciitis is a debilitating condition for athletes. Could you discuss how your products, besides the ProStretch Plus, help alleviate the symptoms and speed up recovery? Do you have any upcoming innovations or lesser-known products that address plantar fasciitis that athletes might find useful? What advice would you give to a triathlete dealing with plantar fasciitis in the middle of their training season? Given the nature of triathlon training, how can athletes maintain a balance between training hard and preventing injuries like chafing and plantar fasciitis? What role does product consistency and routine play in preventing these common triathlete issues, especially with products like SportShield and ProStretch? Just a few episodes back we decided to revisit some of the highlights from Sake Future Summit 2020. In preparing for and editing that episode there was so much that we wanted to include but couldn't in the interest of time, we devised a clever solution: we just did it again. As with the previous round, if you have the time to really pick through all of these on the official Sake On Air YouTube channel, the visual component adds a lot to these and there's a great deal more fascinating and insightful material that we just couldn't cram in. Also, seeing as how half of the programming for the Sake Future Summit was comprised of interviews, tours, presentations and discussions conducted with individuals from the Japanese side of the industry and carried out in Japanese and subtitled, a majority of the great programming is still stuck in a visual-only format. If you're sipping sake or shochu over the weekend, firing those sessions up alongside your beverage-of-choice isn't a bad way to spend an evening. You can find those all archived over on our YouTube channel. In this episode you'll hear from hear:- How the pros of the U.K. sake market are looking to bring it to the next level in a discussion with Barry McCaughley (Restaurateur; F&B Development Consultant), Miho Komatsu (Sake Specialist for Marussia Beverage; Marketing and International Sales for Akashi-tai Sake Brewery), Akiko Konishi (Manager of Intl. Dept. at Konishi Shuzo), and navigated by Oliver Hilton-Johnson (Tengu Sake).- About how some unique approaches to the Spanish market could change the game for sake, together with Pablo Alomar Salvioni (President of Salvioni & Alomar), Francois Chartier (Aroma Specialist; Master Blender for Tanaka 1789 X Chartier), and Rubén Pol Ramon (Head Sommelier at Restaurant Disfrutar, Barcelona).- The ways in which shochu is poised to be woven into the future of the world's best bars with Don Lee (Industry mentor; former partner Existing Conditions), Ryan Chetiyawardana (Founder of Mr. Lyan; Cocktail bartender), and Chikako Ichihara (CEO of Azix; Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association US Liaison officer).- How French cuisine could pave the way for sake to be incorporated into the upper echelons of the epicurean experience, together with Xavier Thuizat (President of Kura Master; Chef Sommelier of Hotel Crillon) and Marco Pelletier (Vigneron at Domaine de Galouchey; Proprietor of Vantre, Paris).- About the fascinating ways that sake and shochu are being incorporated into some of the U.S.'s best restaurants in a dialogue between Nobuo Fukuda (Chef at Teeter House), Sachiko Miyagi (Sake Expert at Tippsy Sake), Mutsuko Soma (Chef at Kamonegi; Owner of Hannyatou), David Schlosser (Chef at Shibumi), and Christopher Gomez (Beverage Director at Shibumi).
