Go for Flow. Episode 130 is with Mel Kettle, author of "The Social Association" and "Fully Connected'. TALKING POINTS Not only do you give feedback down, you give it across and you give it up as well. Giving feedback is one skill set, while how to receive feedback is just as important. When you hear the word feedback, how do you react? “Feedback” is one of those words that can be polarizing and cause panic. I encourage leaders to create a culture of conversation within their organization so that they never have to use the word feedback. How do I have a conversation with my manager who doesn't listen? If you don't have a trusted relationship with your manager, then that's going to be a difficult conversation. What do you do when you're on the receiving end of that difficult conversation? Mel Kettle has a five-step feedback framework. This week it's my privilege to welcome Dr. Charan Ranganath to the show for a fascinating discussion about his new book, Why We Remember: Unlocking Memory's Power to Hold on to What Matters. Charan is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and director of the Dynamic Memory Lab at the University of California at Davis. For over 25 years, he has studied the mechanisms in the brain that allow us to remember past events, using brain imaging techniques, computational modeling and studies of patients with memory disorders. In this episode we uncover the malleability of memory and discuss practical strategies for not just remembering more, but remembering better. Charan guides listeners through the science of memory preservation and the critical role of sleep in processing and retaining our experiences, and more importantly turning the memories of those experiences into Charan also discusses the brain's dopaminergic pathways and how intentional distractions can hamper our performance. In addition, we touch upon how lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress can affect our cognitive abilities and explore the concept of error-driven learning—why struggling to recall might actually be good for us. So join us as Charan challenges cultural myths about brain usage and busts the notions of effective multitasking and magic techniques for developing a perfect memory. ________________________________________ Related Episodes: Jonathan Levi on Learning, Speed Reading and Memory Palaces Gretchen Rubin on Discovering How To Live Life In Five Senses ________________________________________ Connect with Dr. Charan: Website Instagram Book LinkedIn ________________________________________ Connect with Erik: Sign Up For Our Newsletter LinkedIn Facebook Instagram and Threads ________________________________________ Learn more about your ad choices. Do you want to decode the essence of human behavior and understand the driving force behind every action? Discover the power of body language with Dr. David Snyder as he explores the subtle shifts in the behavior of human beings and relating them to lie detection and face reading. Stay tuned! Standout Quotes: •Everything human beings do is in response to a feeling. It's either a feeling they want more of or a feeling they want a whole lot less of. •You don't need to memorize all the variations of body language; you just need to understand the continuum of body language and a few basic principles. •When you see people shift from their normal way of behaving, it indicates increasing indicators of stress, discomfort, and negative neurological arousal. Key Takeaways: • At the core of every human action is a quest for feeling—more of the good or less of the not-so-good. Understanding this emotional compass unveils the essence of our choices. •Mastering body language isn't about memorizing every nuance. Embrace the art of observation, for in the subtleties lies the language that speaks volumes. •Behavioral shifts are signals, a language of stress and discomfort. Pay attention when others deviate from their norm—it's a window into their emotional landscape. When someone tells you what to do and they have experience - you should probably listen to them. I was told by someone in the know to get my eyes checked before I started my PhD. I didn't. I felt confident that my over-the-counter readers were just fine. Well, here I am in Week 11 with new glasses! In this episode, I share two things I learned this week through my PhD journey: You need to have the right tools when you are doing anything. A PhD is so reading intensive that you do need to get your eyes checked! Speed reading allows you to take in a lot of information, but details matter in the PhD program. I started using a ruler to read and highlight! EPISODE RESOURCES: Follow my journey on Instagram - Check out the PhD Highlight Button Did you enjoy this episode? I've gotten a lot of questions about how we actually do that (and still get anything else done). How many times have you set a goal to read more books? I have, and last year, I actually surpassed my goal! This was a big accomplishment, so I wanted to bring on an expert to help us understand how to make reading enjoyable, achievable, and efficient. I'm excited for you to hear from Abby Marks Beale about how to do all of that, and transform your relationship to learning through reading.Highlights:7:46 - It's all about being really discerning about where you're at at this time, what you're interested in, what's gonna be most relevant to you personally and professionally.11:45 - “When I was in elementary school I had to stand up in front of the class and read and ever since then I have hated reading.” They were told they were bad or they were too slow. Let it go. Your past does not predict your future.18:14 - Speed Reading is an active, mindful and conscious set of strategies that allow you to get what you need quickly from any reading material in an efficient and effective manner.25:01 - Before you start jumping in and trying to commit to memory something you don't even know, look at the whole chapter, find that outline, read through that quickly first, and then when you go back and read it in more detail, find the areas that are unfamiliar to you. Then create a good note-taking method.Connect with KristinInstagramWebsiteBreakout PlanPersonalize Your Prospecting ProcessConnect with Abby Marks BealeLinkedInWebsite

Performing well on your standardized test becomes a whole lot easier if you can read faster while retaining more of what you read. As guest Bara Sapir, developer of the MindFlow Speed Reading Program, explains, that's a skill that can be developed with improved technique and practice — and by letting go of some of the common "bad" reading habits that you've likely developed to this point in your academic journey. If you're eager to get a leg up on the reading comprehension portion of your exam — or even to just read faster at work or for pleasure — learn from Bara as she shares:How reading is a skill that can be learned and improved, no matter your current ability; The bad reading habits of "fixation" and "subvocalization" and how to fix them; How many words per minute (wpm) you're likely currently reading, and how many wpm you need to shoot for on test day;Why getting lost in the details on a reading passage is slowing you down, and why it's not necessary for getting right answers anyway; The "finger technique" for getting your eyes to scan words more fluidly; How your brain will eventually catch up with your eyes as you train them to read more quickly;Reading tips for non-native English speakers;External factors (sleep, diet, etc.) that can influence your focus — and thus comprehension — while reading; And more!Contrary to common wisdom, improving your reading speed and comprehension is something you can do in a relatively short amount of time, provided you put in the time to learn the necessary skills and practice their implementation. Running out of time on the reading portion of your test doesn't have to be an issue for you any longer.
