The Down to Watch crew dives into the complicated world of David Lynch this week with Blue Velvet! Dan and Raul take a trip through the mind-bending works of one of their favorite filmmakers, spending a little more time on the MacLachlan - Dern - Hopper starring psychosexual mystery thriller that places corny young love in the center of an underworld of drugs, sex, danger, and abuse. Lynch finds his two top muses in the two leads of this cult classic about creeps and killers that operate just under the surface of normal suburban life and puts them through a complicated hell constructed by the maniacal Frank Booth. Dennis Hopper brings to life a legendary villain who functions more like a force of nature than an actual antagonist, existing as deep drug-filled breaths of anger and tears often followed by uncomfortable exclamations and vicious violence. As a shining spot in a fantastic career, Velvet is worth a watch in the modern era, and DtW is happy to spotlight all of Lynch's career in a retrospective episode. Diane, make a note!

Detective or Pervert: David Lynch's Blue Velvet  This week Mr. Chavez & I dive into The World of David Lynch. Amazingly, Lynch has been able to survive and thrive in the Hollywood System for over four decades. From his beginnings with a labor of love called Eraserhead (1977) thru critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for 1980s The Elephant Man, and a colossal failure attempting an adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune (1984), which could have easily ended his filmmaking career, Lynch bounced back with a truly strange, mesmerizing, and captivating work. Polarizing for critics when first released in 1986, Lynch's Blue Velvet - from his own original script - would confuse, anger, and enthrall audiences. Blue Velvet announced the emergence of a singular voice in filmmaking. It's a thrill for us to sit down and re-watch this masterpiece featuring early performances from Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rosellini, Laura Dern, and the re-emergence in a career-defining role as the homicidal and psychotic Frank Booth, Dennis Hopper. Lynch's film examines small town America while painting a dark and pessimistic look at the underbelly of Americana. Take a lesson as we return to this Dark World. Thanks for your continued love and support. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.  For those of you who would like to donate to this undying labor of love, you can do so with a contribution at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/watchrickramos - Anything and Everything is appreciated, You Cheap Bastards.

Writer and podcaster Jake Tropila returns for a dive into the dusty, hard-nosed pleasures of John Dahl's 1993 neo-noir western 'Red Rock West'. The film has been newly restored and released on blu-ray in a great edition courtesy of Cinématographe, a new sub-label from the folks behind Vinegar Syndrome. We start with a discussion of the career of John Dahl, an underrated director with a sharp style that made him a prime helmer of small, smart thrillers of the era alongside his skilled conteporaries like Bill Duke and Carl Franklin. Then we turn to Red Rock West, its influences, and where it exists downstream from the success of the Coen Brothers' 'Blood Simple', a film that bolstered a neo-noir resurgence in the late 80s and early 90s. Finally, we discuss the relative absence of the neo-noir in the modern cinematic landscape, the migration of these sorts of stories into longform, episodic television, and some hopes for the genre's future, courtesy of some recent releases like the latest Rose Glass film 'Love Lies Bleeding', a film that had yet to be released when this episode was recorded. Following the big budget failure of Dune, director David Lynch went back to his surrealistic roots with a controversial vision of American suburbia's dark underbelly, Blue Velvet.  This movie put actors Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern on the map as a young couple searching for clues, featured Isabella Rossellini as a sexually blackmailed lounge singer, and revived the career of counter-culture icon Dennis Hopper as the terrifyingly unpredictable Frank Booth. Considered extremely edgy for a mainstream studio release in 1986, does this psycho-sexual coming of age story still pack the same transgressive yet highly engrossing punch that it once did?  Find out what our panel of young film-lovers think after seeing Blue Velvet for the very first time, in a post-Twin Peaks world that has already absorbed so much of Lynch's style and sensibility. Between the fact that I'm a bit overscheduled next week & I've loved hearing from listeners who enjoyed the first installment in this series, I decided to take advantage of a free morning to edit & upload this episode early! Releasing just in time for Dennis Hopper's birthday on the 17th (& mine a couple of days later), welcome to the second installment of our three-part series devoted to the actor. Filled with analysis & appreciation of some of his most popular films & performances from a panel of seven outstanding guests, plus excerpts from a lifetime of interviews with Hopper voiced by yours truly, this episode covers the decade that made him an icon all over again with the film BLUE VELVET. I guess technically you could call this Dennis Hopper's Blue Period! Centered on the 1980s, we open with the controversial OUT OF THE BLUE & then talk about his great comeback year of 1986, & the films BLUE VELVET, RIVER'S EDGE, & HOOSIERS. Featuring great stories about seeing these films with audiences &/or way too young, plus insights from Hopper on directing actors & learning about women, along with Lynch's chronicle of casting him to play Frank Booth, this has been our most hotly anticipated release since I mentioned this project, so I hope you dig it. Around the time that the very first episode of Season 4 was uploaded, I embarked on a months-long journey to prepare & record the podcast's first entry in a new spotlight series devoted to some of the greatest character actors in screen history. Reaching out to good friends & past guests who I knew had a special interest in the life, films, characters, & performances of our first subject, Dennis Hopper, over the course of two months, I interviewed every participant one by one. Kicking off each conversation by inquiring what it was about Hopper that they found most compelling as a viewer (as well as their earliest memories of the actor), I challenged them even further, asking each guest to choose one or more of their favorite roles to dissect with me in a limited amount of time. While most people immediately gravitated to BLUE VELVET, I was thrilled by their willingness to touch on a number of his lesser-known or celebrated works, including some of the films that Dennis Hopper made as a director, & soon wound up with over 3.5 hours of stellar audio, primarily focused on the 1970s-1990s. Knowing that my overly ambitious idea for one episode was best reconfigured as a 3-part miniseries, I cut highlights from these conversations together & incorporated excerpts from interviews with Dennis Hopper I'd discovered in my research & then read them aloud as Hopper to add some variety to our stellar yet mostly masculine* lineup. Today, we're kicking things off a week ahead of Dennis Hopper's birthday with a look at the first part of his career. Although it's primarily set in the 1970s, we take a few forays into his earlier years as an actor & his iconic feature filmmaking debut EASY RIDER, plus flirt briefly with the '80s in order to cover his reunion with APOCALYPSE NOW director Francis Ford Coppola in RUMBLE FISH as well. Along with those titles, you'll also hear us discuss THE LAST MOVIE, THE AMERICAN FRIEND, KID BLUE, & others in Dennis Hopper - Part 1. Boasting a wonderfully insightful roster of contributors, this episode features the following guests in alphabetical order: Mitchell Beaupre, Duncan Birmingham, William Boyle, Elizabeth Cantwell, S.A. Cosby, Jordan Harper, Blake Howard, Mike Miley, & Travis Woods. Following this installment, next week's Part 2 is a must for fans of Dennis Hopper's '80s Renaissance era, including his iconic turn as Frank Booth in BLUE VELVET, & Part 3 will take us to the '90s. I hope you enjoy this long-in-the-works series & if you'd like to encourage the show's efforts to try new things like this in the future, please consider joining our Patreon (HTTPs://www.patreon.com/FilmIntuition) to support our research for as little as $1 per month, if you haven't joined us already, & be sure to recommend Watch With Jen to others to help spread the word. Thank you so much! *Note: our next subject is the remarkable Julianne Moore so I'm hoping that will help balance things out a little! Jamie and Doug dig deep on the latest episode as they try and figure out what exactly is going on in Lumberton, what Frank Booth is sucking down in that gas tank, when this movie takes place, why Laura Dern looks the way she does when she cries, how many mechanical birds actually populate this town, why half the dialogue is beer-centric, and why Frank thinks that disguise would fool anyone. It's our first David Lynch film folks so strap in for this wild ride that is Blue Velvet! https://www.goodtimesgreatmovies.com Support the show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/goodtimesgreatmovies Merch on TeePublic: https://www.teepublic.com/user/gtgmcast Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/GTGMcast And on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodtimesgreatmoviespodcast Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/goodtimesgreatmovies

Welcome back for our third broadcast, and second pow wow with Doctor Lawrence Fugate.  Today we will be discussing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 in celebration of it's 32nd anniversary which has just passed.  Also in memory of Tobe Hooper, who died just over a year ago.  Doc delves deep into this silly movie, comparing and contrasting with other films in the franchise as well as others that came after.  He also falls down the rabbit hole of Lefty Enright actor, Dennis Hopper whose manic performance stemmed from coming down off of a serious drug dependency.  Also touching on another amazingly out there performance of his from the same year, in Blue Velvet as Frank Booth.  New episode will be out next week, until then sit back, relax, and enjoy, creeps.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 335 This week we return to one of our more popular running series - People who Died... Died. The arguably living Meltdown Gang get together to discuss many of the great performers that we lost in 2015. It's our own "special" kind of tribute. And as we realize that the lousy straight to DVD stuff actually keeps the wheels turning in the industry, we also come to terms with... you're my favorite dentist, a George Pal production, hailed as the next My Big Fat Greek Wedding?, you're the person I hate the least, I almost walked out on that movie, David Lynch, The Big Short, a knock-off Gone with the Wind, now that one freaked me out, I'm so thankful for the existence of YouTube, The Outer Limits, the blind sheriff, Jewel Jules Franklin Guy, nipped at Harvey Levin, the mom who makes you want to kill, that man was not above chewing the scenery to pieces, beets are the bastard child of the vegetable world, he's the kind of guy... if he didn't have parents in the industry - would he have made it?, reverse mortgage, did you like Cats?, the kid from the Sandlot... and My So-Called Life, William Girdler, one of my top ten films - of all time, he's so damned likable, the glut of media that's hitting the shelves, who gets his hands bitten off, That 70's Show, all the big blocky clam-shell Disney VHS tapes in my collection are filled with this man, we can't make this like the ending of The Vanishing, it's like an Agatha Christie with a monster, he's the biggest red herring in most of the movie, Frank Booth, shooting on actual film, Condorman, reinvigorating the horror genre, Sean Connery, local no-budget cinema, what was the dog's name?, 2015 really hurt... so I'm hoping 2016 is gonna blossom, I know him best for making me afraid to live in Los Angeles, a young beautiful Montgomery Clift, The Faculty, he got a little bit of time with Elizabeth Taylor, it was so bad I just purged it from my memory, my uncle was in that movie and you're not leaving this room until you write a script! "When I saw he passed, I was like... awww no - my childhood."
