*Streamyard defaulted to my computer microphone and not my recording microphone. I apologize for the terrible sound quality. In this episode I explore how the American progressive left and conservative right share many fundamental assumptions about the use of authoritarian power. While the political spectrum in the West is usually conceptualized as left vs. right, I argue that it should be more accurately characterized as liberty vs. authority. I discuss the libertarian non-aggression principle, which states as a moral principle that violence should never be initiated against a peaceful person, and I read from Murray Rothbard and Hans-Herman Hoppe to elaborate the point. I then compare this with conservative and progressive conceptions of power, both of which affirm the use of arbitrary state power and violence to achieve their preferred social ends. This is why our only two political options are between liberty and varying degrees of authoritarianism. I then read from Mark 10:35-45, John 15, 1 John 4, and Matthew 23, showing that self-sacrificial love for others and the rejection of worldly authoritarian powers are principles fundamental to Christianity and explain how libertarianism is a more consistent modern political application of those fundamental principles.  Media Referenced:Rothbard, For a New Liberty: https://a.co/d/2nP2PZCHoppe, A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism: https://a.co/d/0jub6a2Jesus and Capitalism: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-180-jesus-and-capitalism/Mises vs. Wright: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-178-ludwig-von-mises-vs-a-christian-scholar-round-3-n-t-wright/ The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. What is praxeology and why does it matter? In this episode, Conza, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Australia, joins us to discuss the theoretical foundations of economics. He explains why praxeology – the science of human action – provides the value-free framework needed to reason about economic questions, and how its method differs from that of physical sciences such as biology. He and Saifedean discuss how praxeology can be used to analyse topics such as minimum wage, inflation and pandemics, and why the contrasting methods used by quantitative macroeconomists are flawed. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, August 24. It will be another sunny day on Wednesday, with a possibility for some rain coming early on Thursday morning. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 86 degrees. On Wednesday night it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of around 66 degrees. There will be a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, primarily after midnight and into the early morning hours on Thursday. A $312 million plan to improve Cedar Rapids secondary schools includes building a new aquatic center to replace the three pools in the district's high schools, and a new 1,200-student middle school. In a presentation to the school board on Monday, district officials proposed reducing the number of middle schools in the district from six to four, renovating and adding additions or new construction, and making improvements to the district's four high schools over the next seven to 10 years. The plan hinges on voters approving a $312 million general obligation bond in a referendum scheduled for March 7. If the bond is approved, the district's property tax levy — which is currently zero — would increase to $2.70 per $1,000 of taxable valuation. This is the first general obligation bond ask the Cedar Rapids Community School District has made in 22 years. The last ask was in 2000 for $46 million, which passed. A retired University of Iowa music professor has been indicted in federal court on charges of distributing methamphetamine that resulted in a death and of possessing child pornography. John Robert Muriello, 65, of Iowa City, is accused of buying drugs from a supplier in California and of having 12,000 photos and 3,183 videos on his electronic devices, many of them of minor boys, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in June. Muriello was indicted on one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute meth that resulted in serious bodily injury or death and one count of possession of child pornography. He is being held without bond in the Muscatine County Jail. His trial is set for Dec. 5 in Davenport. https://music.uiowa.edu/people/emeritus-faculty (Muriello is listed on the university's website) as an emeritus professor of voice and opera. The university placed Muriello on leave in May 2021 and he retired on July 1 of this year. On May 28 of 2021 Iowa City police obtained a search warrant for Muriello's home after an overdose death two weeks earlier triggered a drug investigation. A school bus for the Bennett Community School District in Cedar County crashed with another vehicle Tuesday morning — the first day of school — sending both drivers and one child to the hospital. The crash occurred at the intersection of Hwy 130 and Washington Avenue, between Bennett and New Liberty, according to a news release from the Cedar County Sheriff's Office. There were six children on the school bus at the time of the crash. The release did not specify what led to the crash, but stated there is an ongoing investigation. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=502880051841564&set=a.477582197704683 (The Bennett Community School District released a statement) Tuesday thanking the emergency responders who reported to the scene. The libertarian alternative is to abstain from such a monopoly government to begin with. Murray N. Now, throughout history ... despots and ruling elites of States have had far more need of the services of intellectuals than have peaceful citizens in a free society. This week we resume our investigation of Night Demon's early days.  We pick up the narrative at the beginning of 2013.  Night Demon played a show on January 5, with Dusty as roadie for drummer John Crerar. It marked the first time Jarvis and Dusty had hung out in depth, aside from a prior occasion when Dusty had saved Jarvis's life. The guys began forging bonds of camaraderie with touring bands, providing hospitality that would one day be reciprocated.  A setback occurred when Night Demon lost their practice space because of noise complaints, but fortunately a historically important alternative location was secured. In late January 2013, Night Demon played their pivotal first show in Los Angeles. That night, Jarvis reached a crucial personal and professional crossroads, and decided to go all-in with Night Demon. The band had suddenly become more serious. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. This week's episode is Early Days, part 5, focusing on the eventful last quarter of 2012. Night Demon appear on their first magazine cover, in a concept gone dreadfully awry, then perform for themselves at a deserted Halloween party, learning valuable business lessons along the way. Work continues on the design of a Night Demon mascot, artwork and logo. In November 2012, Night Demon plays more shows, with drummer John Crerar in a neck brace and a stack of digital download cards to hand out to fans.  In the meantime, Armand and Dusty's band New Liberty was setting Ventura on fire, living the rock'n'roll dream, and recording new material. There were cracks in the foundation, however, as Dustin became disillusioned with the direction of the band and his interest waned.  To close out 2012, New Liberty recorded a revved-up version of Spinal Tap's "Christmas with the Devil" for a Nardcore Christmas album. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. This week we continue our series of episodes dedicated to the Early Days of Night Demon. We pick up the story in spring 2012.  Brent and John had been jamming Night Demon material while Jarvis played out with his main project, Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats. Bolstered by John's confidence and steadfast belief, as well as the support of pirate radio station KSSR, Night Demon started gigging again in spring 2012.  The setlists of those shows included "Chalice 2," which later became "Satan." During this period, Night Demon tightened up the logo and squeezed in gigs in between the members' very active main bands' live performances. As the calendar moved to fall 2012, Night Demon published their first official bio as they continued inching towards being a serious band. Shortly after the bio was issued, Jarvis went on tour in Europe with the Heartbeats. A chance encounter on a rough night in Spain reminded him that Night Demon was his destiny, even as Brent and John kept the home fires burning for Night Demon in Ventura. The band worked out a cover of Queen's "We Will Rock You" in late 2012 to energize them going into 2013. Become a subscriber today at nighdemon.net/subscriber. For part 3 of the Early Years, we resume the narrative in early 2012.  Pat Bailey had left Night Demon to return to school. At that time, Night Demon welcomed drummer John Crerar from The Fucking Wrath into the fold. Crerar brought extreme enthusiasm and energy to the band, despite being from a punk background more than a metal background. Meanwhile in 2012, Night Demon was very much a side project as the members focused on their main bands.  Jarvis was busy with Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, while Dusty and Armand were firing on all cylinders with New Liberty.  The concept of a VenAustin tour was launched, with four bands - including Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, New Liberty, Aaron Orbit, and 8Stops7 - playing shows on the way to and from South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.  You will hear tour stories and anecdotes from the tour and associated fundraisers.  By the end of the VenAustin tour, Jarvis returned to Ventura ready to resume Night Demon activities once again. Become a subscriber today at nighdemon.net/subscriber. This week's episode covers part 1 of ‘The Early Years'.  We pick up the story in mid-2011. Night Demon had just formed, written and recorded the self-titled EP, and had played their debut gig.  For the remainder of 2011, Night Demon was on the back burner as all members were focused on other projects.  Drummer Pat Bailey moved 11 hours away to go back to school.  For his part, Jarvis was in Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats land, promoting a new album and giving his all to that project.  Armand and Dustin recorded an album called The Uninvited with their band New Liberty, and were relishing their role as local heroes in the Ventura scene.  And Brent was heavily involved with The Fucking Wrath (featuring future Night Demon drummer John Crerar), who recorded an album called Valley of the Serpent's Soul with Armand in the producer chair, then experienced the triumphs and tribulations of a US tour.  At the end of 2011, however, an encounter between Jarvis and John Crerar helped rekindle interest and excitement in Night Demon.Become a subscriber today at nighdemon.net/subscriber. The LAVA Flow | Libertarian | Anarcho-capitalist | Voluntaryist | Agorist

From Criminal Cops last week to Private Police this week, I wonder which ones are more successful? What's in the News with stories on zero tolerance, deadly cops, rapist cops, graffiti trumps property rights, Tide Pod bans, and Pentagon loses more money. Plus, a special Herding Cats episode on a follow up from Liberty Forum and big news for PorcFest XV. This episode is brought to you by Heleum, a long-term savings accelerator allowing you to start investing in cryptos, without you having to do the busy work. Also brought to you by ZenCash, a cryptocurrency that infuses privacy, anonymity, and security done right.   WHAT'S RUSTLING MY JIMMIES After last week's Criminal Cops episode, I was thrilled to see the article on Private Police that I'll be covering in this episode. Apparently, in Britain, there is a new completely private police force probing hundreds of crimes, including murder and rape, and they have a 100 percent conviction rate so far. They have prosecuted more than 400 criminals and are led by former Scotland Yard senior officers. The name of the firm is TM Eye, and they are now believed to bring more private convictions than any other organization except for the RSPCA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.   WHAT'S IN THE NEWS In zero tolerance, zero brains news, 22-year old track coach, Tayler Boncal, is being charged with three counts of felony sexual assault, on a man who is 18 years old. I shit you not. In fuck the police news, a Tennessee sheriff is being sued for using excessive force after he was recorded boasting he told officers to shoot a man rather than risk damaging police cars by ramming him off the road. In kidnapped consent news, 18-year-old Anna was kidnapped from a parked car by two plainclothes detectives for having weed in the car. Handcuffed and kidnapped by the two over-six-feet tall detectives who were powerfully built, Anna, a slender woman just over five feet tall, was put into the back of an unmarked police van with tinted windows, where she was raped by both officers while repeatedly telling them, "No." In what the actual fuck news, ruling that graffiti — a typically transient form of art — was of sufficient stature to be protected by the law, a federal judge in Brooklyn awarded a judgment of $6.7 million on Monday to 21 graffiti artists whose works were destroyed in 2013 at the 5Pointz complex in Long Island City, Queens. No, I can't make this shit up. In the stupid protecting the stupid news, New York State Legislators have unveiled a bill that would require all detergent packages, such as Tide Pods, sold in New York to be of a uniform color that is "unattractive to children." The product would also have to come wrapped in child bite–resistant packaging. Also, there would need to be a warning label informing would-be Tide Pod champions that the product is dangerous to eat. In it's only stolen money news, the Pentagon failed to track more than $800 million in construction spending adequately, according to an internal audit of one of the Defense Department's largest agencies. HERDING CATS I'm fresh off of the New Hampshire Liberty Forum high from this weekend! I love Liberty Forum because it is a huge family reunion for me. I get to see so many people who are family, plus I get to continue to grow my liberty family by meeting new, amazing people. This year, I stayed pretty busy at the event because I had to man the PorcFest table to sell early bird tickets for this year's event. And, I was asked to moderate two different panels of podcasters and captain two off-site dinners related to liberty media. But I still found time to hang out with the most amazing people on the planet. And, this weekend we announced our first speaker and musical act for PorcFest. BackWordz, a solid libertarian ancap rap metal band from Texas fronted by Eric July, co-founder of the Being Libertarian Facebook Page and very outspoken anarcho-capitalist.  And, while we have them there, Eric July will be speaking on the Main Pavillion stage. This is the first of many announcements we will have in the upcoming weeks, but don't miss out on your Early Bird tickets now by going to thelavaflow.com/pf. Get your Early Bird Tickets today and save $30 before March 1st at thelavaflow.com/pf.   ASK ME ANYTHING So, normally I'd wait until next week to answer some AMA questions, but I had a little extra time this episode. I thought I'd use that to help me get caught up with a couple of questions.  Robert Murphy's short pamphlet called Chaos Theory Murray Rothbard's For a New Liberty
