With special guest: Jeff Apter… in conversation with Bill Kable George Young made his name internationally by writing with his best mate Harry Vanda a song we can all sing along to more than 50 years after its release. So it was a natural choice as the title of Jeff Apter’s book Friday on My Mind: the life of George Young. George managed to get a ticket to The Beatles Sydney performance in 1964. He decided right then that he was going to be in music as a career but it was not going to be a straightforward ride as we learn in Jeff’s book. We hear from our special guest today about the toughness of all the large Young clan. Eight of them arrived in Australia as Ten Pound Poms. They needed that toughness firstly as they grew up in a dreary part of Scotland. Then when they abandoned their life in Scotland they needed to be tough once again when they arrived in the Villawood Migrant Hostel in Sydney. Villawood was not the land of milk and honey they had seen on the posters. It was after a fight in the hostel that George met Harry strumming a guitar and the nucleus of The Easybeats formed. This time I talk about Sydney fave Fratelli Paradiso, my new Eat Streets series for The Age, and new Melbourne eateries Sebastian Kakigori, Papelon and Charlong. There's also a special drop-in guest - chef Ronith Arlikatti happened to be dining at his new restaurant Hopper Joint on the same day that I snuck in for a meal. Ask any Australian rock fan who is the greatest Australian performer or band over the history of the last 70 odd years and you'll get a multitude of answers (as you would anywhere). It's a subjective question and there are generational factors to be taken into account. However, an Australian Performing Rights Association panel declared “Friday On My Mind” by The Easybeats to be the greatest Australian song ever. That's gotta put The Easybeats somewhere in the pantheon of the greats, right? Welcome to episode 164 of Love That Album. The history of pop music is littered with artists who if lucky enough to achieve popularity and acclaim for their work have a limited shelf life before audiences and critics move onto the next thing. It's extremely rare for a musician or group to get a second wind. Harry Vanda and George Young are in that rare company. First finding Beatlesque levels of popularity in the Southern Hemisphere with The Easybeats, and then becoming songwriters and producers for other successful acts within the Alberts Productions “House of Hits” including George's kid brothers' band..... I welcome back to the podcast biographer, Jeff Apter to discuss his book “Friday On My Mind: The Life of George Young”. It's a terrific read that looks at George's life as an immigrant from Scotland to the outskirts of Sydney and being determined to make it as a rock and roll musician. We discuss The Easybeats success and poor management, his advice to younger brothers Malcolm and Angus, Vanda and Young's second apprenticeship with “fake” bands, the tragedy of Stevie Wright post Easybeats and the empire Vanda and Young built. My huge thanks to Jeff for coming back to the show. You can order his multitude of biographies on Australian musicians from http://jeffapter.com.au. Part 2 of this special is coming in a week or so and will be a discussion with Nathan Wilcox of the Let It Roll Podcast about The Easybeats Absolute Anthology 1965 to 1969. The subject of this week's podcast is the interconnection of personal and professional relationships. Bernard Savage's company, Size 10½ Boots helps professional service businesses develop skills and strategies. Andy and Bernard explore the resistance and the strict dividing lines that exist to sharing personal information, especially in large companies. Bernard believes a fresh, more authentic approach is needed. There should be a focus on people and being true to yourself. This is easier in small businesses where there is more freedom and flexibility. But, openness and transparency lead to trust which is so important in leadership. Connections on personal levels such as sport or music lead to different conversations and can develop deeper relationships. Bernard illustrates this referencing his Friday On My Mind playlist on LinkedIn, where music has created a bond with a wider network.

It's Friday and this is what's on my mind! I've just written a feature on food waste and I was shocked to learn that Australians each waste 312KG of food a year. Who's doing what to change this, starting with me and my chicken soup. So it was a natural choice as the title of Jeff Apter’s new book Friday on My Mind: the life of George Young. George managed to get a ticket to The Beatles Sydney performance in 1964. He decided right then that he was going to be in music as a career but it was not going to be a straightforward ride as we learn in Jeff’s book. Listen Now (mp3)

Shel Talmy produced records that set the templates for hard rock and punk rock. After growing up in Chicago and learning the art of sound engineering in Los Angeles, he began his career as a producer in London in the early ‘60s. The list of the records he produced is staggering - singles by The Kinks (“You Really Got Me”, “All Day And All Of The Night,” “Sunny Afternoon”), by The Who (“My Generation”, “The Kids Are Alright”, “I Can’t Explain”), and even David Bowie’s debut single. He also produced the great “Friday On My Mind” by the Easybeats, and he worked with Manfred Mann, Pentangle, The Creation, and The Damned. In this interview, Talmy discusses his unique approach to music production, how he helped the Kinks get the guitar distortion on “You Really Got Me,” and the advice he gave The Who’s Keith Moon about playing drums in the studio. (Note: Many apologies for the poor sound quality - the interview took place by phone, and unfortunately the recording software left much to be desired. However, close listening will be rewarded, as Shel knows the history of rock music as few others have.)

This week, Tommy, Ben and Adam spent one of their eeveenings at the cinema to bring you a review of Detective Pikachu. They also talk about the bizarre news around Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, a quick word on the new game Snakeybus, the recent Sony State of Play, and a bunch more news and chat! Quite honestly, I thought of filling this description with a bunch of Pokemon puns but right now I can only remember Eevee. In the mid-2000s there was an Australian "supergroup" formed called The Wrights who only did a cover of the 3-part song "Evie" by Stevie Wright, who used to be in The Easybeats. Bernard Fanning, and the guy from Jet, and I assume probably Kram from Spiderbait were in it. For some reason people made a huge deal of it at the time, but they literally just did that one (technically 3) song(s) at some live event and a studio version and that was it. They played it on the radio heaps but I remember having had no idea about the song, or Stevie Wright before that. Didn't quite see what the big deal was, but the song was ok. The Easybeats did Friday On My Mind, I'm pretty sure. So there you go, there's a bit of Australian music history instead of Pokemon puns this week :)Subscribe the YouTube channel and view our entire playthrough of A Way Out https://youtube.com/c/FilthyCasualsListen to Adam and Ben’s other podcast Arya Talking To Me? – A Game of Thrones Podcast – or to Adam’s new podcast Oooh, Spooky – wherever you find good podcasts. If you’d like to support us on Patreon head to http://www.patreon.com/filthycasualspod – now with a bonus episode every week on the $10 tier! Hey folks, it’s time to bring you some new Love That Album podcasting for 2016. We’re starting off with episode 23 of Eric Reanimator’s  Love That Album – The Compilation Edition. In the last couple of weeks, rock music has lost (at least) three iconic rock music figures. Stevie Wright of The Easybeats, David Bowie (who did a cracking version of “Friday On My Mind”), and Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister. Eric starts this episode discussing two facets to Lemmy’s career. First, he discusses Lemmy’s first important band Hawkwind and their live album “Space Ritual” before moving onto the more iconic Motorhead live album “No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith”. Then, he discusses a compilation of a very different artist, producer Joe Meek. He created a hit for the Tornados with “Telstar”, but as the compilation “The Alchemist Of Pop - Home Made Hits & Rarities 1959-1966” shows, he produced a lot of hits with his very distinctive style of heavy reverb and sped up sounds. Eric discusses the man and this compilation. You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from  http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum If you enjoy what you hear, please tell a friend or ten to tune in.
