This week the spotlight is on a 1965 folk jangler by The Guilloteens: "I Don't Believe" is a raw, blue-eyed soul vocal outing reminiscent of the Righteous Brothers. They shoulda been on The Flintstones!! In 1966, The Five of Us came out with the first cover version. It's less raw, but it's smooth as Kraft Creamy! The same year, The Moonrakers pepped the song up considerably and made it into a toe-tapper. The song returned to Memphis in 2002 when Reigning Sound payed homage to their 60s forebears. It's a pretty muscular version, but the vocals are soft & sensitive. You'll feel no pain!!
Over the past few seasons, BSC has brought our listeners a lot of Memphis music from a funky Midtown dive known as Bar DKDC (Don't Know, Don't Care). On this week's program we take a closer look at what makes a music spot special. We talk with the owner, restaurateur Karen Carrier, and we have killer performances from The Reigning Sound and Lucy Woodward!

This story begins with Citizen Vinyl, a combination vinyl pressing plant, recording studio, bar and restaurant in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, in the old Citizen-Times building. Built in the late 1930s, it was originally the home of two newspapers and the WWNC radio station. Wanting to host more events there, Citizen Vinyl reached out to Greg Cartwright, well known for his work in his band Reigning Sound; Greg then invited Amanda Anne Platt, who has been playing with her band The Honeycutters for more than a decade, and a relatively new artist in the Asheville scene, Wes Pearce. Postcard from 1939 depicting Asheville, NC's Pritchard Park and WWNC radio station The three artists shared the stage on the ground floor of the three story building, in the open space between the bar, record shop and pressing plant, and played from their existing catalog of songs as well as many brand new songs that have not yet had their chance to make it into the adjacent room to be pressed into discs. The audience was quiet and attentive, and while Amanda, Greg and Wes played, the rest of the world receded to the background as everyone focused on the trio, who took turns playing their songs on acoustic guitar. After their set, Amanda, Greg, Wes and I went upstairs to the old WWNC live performance studio to talk about the romantic atmosphere of their show, the resurgence of vinyl's popularity and how the collectability of 45s and LPs has flipped since COVID-19 changed so much for all of us, how they navigate their music careers post-COVID, the local Asheville scene and more. Live performance from 1939 on the radio in the WWNC studio where we taped our interview Songs heard in this episode:Amanda Anne Platt & the Honeycutters “The Road” from Amanda Anne Platt & the Honeycutters“Burden” by Wes Pearce, from Death & Darlins, excerpt“Alive” by Reigning Sound, from Memphis In June, excerpt“Girls Like You” by Amanda Anne Platt & the Honeycutters, from The Devil and the Deep Blue SeaThanks for dropping by, and we are even more grateful whenever you share this with someone. Sharing in person is most appreciated, but please also follow us on your podcast platform of choice, and then it will only take a minute to give it a top rating and, where it is an option, a review. It is hugely impactful when you do this! Great ratings, and reviews especially, will make Southern Songs and Stories and the artists it profiles more likely to find a home with more fans. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes of this podcast on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks to Corrie Askew for producing the radio adaptations of this series on public radio WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng who wrote and performed our theme songs. Thanks also to Greg and Amy Gerald for hosting me during my stay in town and to Gar Ragland and everyone at Citizen Vinyl for their hospitality. This is Southern Songs and Stories: the music of the South and the artists who make it. — Joe Kendrick

You've heard of meatless Mondays, but have you ever heard of meatless Fridays? This week, Indiecast hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen are forgoing the meat of the episode in order to focus on the biggest indie news of the week. That's right — it's all banter to celebrate the last double-digit installment before Indiecast hits 100 episodes. That's partly due to Steven and Ian not being able to get their hands on an advance of Beyoncé's new album, but also because there's simply too much indie news to discuss. In this week's episode, Indiecast talks emo week (2:56), Joni Mitchell's first performance in two decades (23:04), 10 years of Frank Ocean's debut Channel Orange (12:32), and more.In this week's Recommendation Corner (50:38), Ian gives props to Chat Pile, an Oklahoma City band he hopes gains traction this year. Meanwhile, Steven gives a shout out to the Reigning Sound, a band formed in 2001 by Greg Cartwright who made eight great albums before disbanding.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 99 and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news. We also recently launched a visualizer for our favorite Indiecast moments. The Hives are a Swedish rock band that rose to prominence in the early 2000s during the Garage Rock Revival. Eight years into their career, the Hives rose from garage rock stalwarts to one of the trendiest bands of the early 2000s, along with the Strokes and the White Stripes. Mixing arty contrivances such as a strict black-and-white dress code and the guidance of a (possibly imaginary) Svengali named Randy Fitzsimmons with Stooges-inspired rock, the Hives - Nicholaus Arson, Chris Dangerous, Dr. Matt Destruction, Vigilante Carlstroem, and Howlin' Pelle Almqvist - formed in 1993 in Fagersta, Sweden, while they were still in their teens. In this episode the playlist published by the band for New Year's Eve 2020-21. Lineup: ABBA, Viagra Boys, Amy Taylor, Los Saicos, The Cramps, ShitKid, Jacqueline Taieb, Hunx & His Punx, First Aid Kit, Tom Waits, Shannon & The Clams, Radioactivity, Turbonegro, The Hives, Oblivians, New Bomb Turks, The Sonics, Thee Headcoatees, Reigning Sound, Richard Hell, Sonic's Rendezvous Band, The Hellacopters, Dead Kennedys, Ramones, Electric Eels, Bo Diddley, Mohammed Wardi, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Charlie Megira, Julian Casablancas, Franska Trion, Tonbruket, The Wailers, Clinic, Mattiel, The Mysterians, The Stooges
2021 marks the 10th anniversary of Campfire Radio Theater and to show our appreciation for a decade of immersive listening experiences, we wanted to kick off our first-ever Monthly Feature with the mastermind behind Campfire Radio Theater, John Ballentine. John is a familiar voice in the audio drama horror world. Like many of us, his passion for audio fiction was sparked by the stories emanating from his radio. John recalls listening to programs such as, Nightfall and Bradbury 13 and catching the creative bug to try something similar. "I've always had a passion for fictional storytelling and writing. Combining these skill sets into producing audio drama proved to be a natural progression." - John Ballentine It's December and the Holidays are upon us. It's that nostalgic time of year. A time for eggnog and cookies, greeting cards and latkes, Yule logs, parades, and zombies. Yes, Zombies. What else would you expect from us? This December we're kicking off the yuletide cheer with a featured Christmas show from our friends at Campfire Radio Theater. And so, as John would say... "Welcome friend. Have a seat by the fire... Make yourself comfortable." Make It UpCruzados, Nine Million TearsSamantha Fish, FasterNathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Love Me Till I'm GoneMike Younger, Baby What Can I SayAlly Venable, Hateful BluesTroy Wilson & Aaron Gillett, Blues In The DarkDavy Knowles, One & The SameArchie Lee Hooker & The Coast To Coast Blues Band, My BabyLake Street Dive, Know That I KnowStarlite Campbell Band, Stone Cold Crazy

For our inaugural episode, Annelise and Mark brilliantly mumble their way through Harvest news and updates while making plenty of promises to get better and to become more professional in future podcasting. Luckily they're saved by a rather enlightening conversation with Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound, The Oblivians, a true 45 head amongst many other titles) about his history running his own record store in Memphis, his move to Asheville in the early 2000s, how he got involved in helping at Harvest, what it means to be an established musician currently, and how he REALLY LOVES social media. JK on that last part. Recorded, mixed and edited by Colin Miller.Theme music created and recorded by MJ Lenderman and Owen Stone.
Toy Trucks kick of the show this week for a Wax Time Special where Richard plays 3 tracks from direct off the vinyl. Further to this, Richard has the pleasure of being in conversation with Jeremy Scott, lead singer and guitarist with The Toy Trucks. Jeremy is a likeable and laid back gent who effortlessly lets the conversation roll about the band. Richard is also curating New Music this week, bringing back Sports Team to the show. The Jaggeresque Alex Rice reminds us why guitar bands work. Excellent music and lyrical jokers Sports Team make a welcome return to form and impress the hell out of Tobin. Speaking of whom, he brings us Meg Myers with her high-school indie rocker Lemon Eyes. It's easy to get lost in its crashing guitar sounds. And Tobin is indeed master of sounds this week. He brings us some Cool Sounds straight out of Australia. Cool Sounds' latest LP is a massive hit with us here at Record Box HQ. Richard has been intermittently spinning this with Rockets, Bells and Poetry all week. All that's left is Tobin's Double Record Box Classic - it's his Nana exclusive 2-track playlist. It's the infectious sample-based early 90s classic by Chad Jackson and then something as suggested by his Grandmother. The Benny Goodman Orchestra featuring Peggy Lee remind us where pop music really started. Let's dive in. Track Listing Don't Be So Easy The Toy Trucks Lemon Eyes Meg Myers Captain Remo The Toy Trucks Fishing Sports Team Hear The Drummer (Get Wicked) Chad Jackson Why Don't You Do It Right Benny Goodman & His Orchestra feat. Peggy Lee Around And Down Cool Sounds Show You Love The Toy Trucks The Toy Trucks - as described by their label Here's what Black & Wyatt Records, Memphis-based record label has to say about The Toy Trucks: The Toy Trucks are collectively 180+ years old. They are fueled by equal parts cheap beer, cheap thrills and Cheap Trick. Over the band’s multi-year existence, songwriter/leader Jeremy Scott has developed an “anything but another crappy love song” ethos. This has resulted in the songs on the band’s first full-length, Rockets Bells and Poetry. (“We stole the title from Mama Cass Elliott,” Scott explains.) Over the course of said album, the band prove conversant with, among other things, Rascals-like blue-eyed grooves (Don’t Be So Easy. Along with grisly true crime balladry (57 Bayview), updated Del Shannonesque psychodrama (Hot Tears). And there's honest flat out rock and roll (I’m on the Dish But I Ain’t No Rag). This LP is both a stand-alone statement and a teaser for the band’s revved up live show. Rockets Bells and Poetry should satisfy anyone’s rock/garage/power-pop itch quite nicely. The Toy Trucks deliver stomping pop flavours on debut platter The Memphis Flyer Further praise from The Memphis Flyer Jeremy Scott is familiar to any fan of Memphis music. He has played in the original Reigning Sound and groups backing Harlan T. Bobo and Dan Montgomery. Although his ensemble playing reveals a fine sense of playing at the service of the song, it's barely offered a glimpse of his songwriting talents. For a time, he led the Wallendas, which also included longtime guitar ace Jim Duckworth, but that was ancient history in pop terms, and never resulted in a full length release. Nonetheless, as Scott's Sunday night DJ slot on WEVL makes clear, he is steeped in the history of pop and rock, old and new, and something was bound to come of it. Now, with his band The Toy Trucks making their debut, rockets bells and poetry (Black & Wyatt), we can finally hear all that cumulative experience blossom into some fine material. Read the full article Memphis combo The Toy Trucks... Led by ex-Reigning Sound member Jeremy Scott, the group — which also includes guitarist Dylan Cranmer, bassist Ryno Hanson and drummer Steve Barnat — have crafted a killer full-length debut for the local Black and Wyatt label that bears the influence of everything from Del Shannon to the Rascals, from garage to punk to power pop and beyond. Commercial Appeal FTBOTRB review of Rockets, Bells and Poetry Visceral. Well, you have been warned in the opening track that there is a distinct possibility you may get disemboweled. It's a raucous and driven way to open this excellent LP from the Memphis circuit's cheap beer driven rockers. However, you're in for quite a ride with Rockets, Bells and Poetry, it's not all balls out rocking. There's the self-effacing heart string plucker Show You Love which plays out the show this week. The whole sound of this LP is one of transition and exploration. The quite carnival-like C D B gives way to the anthemic Hot Tears without so much as a warning. Despite band leader Jeremy Scott professing the band is past its sell by date this recording is much more than that. Its freshness belies Jeremy's statement and one can only wonder how much that tongue in cheek comment actually influences the bands' sound. It is boyish, scruffy and offers more than an occasional sense of childlike wonderment. Much can be learnt from a few listens of this new offering from The Toy Trucks, such as punk glockenspiel. You may never have been touched by it before, but from now on you'll never be untouched. Excellent and rewarding music from past-it rockers who are only just beginning their journey. FTBOTRB official verdict: essential listening.
The Toy Trucks have a new LP out next week. We've been lucky enough to have been granted access to a track or two before its release on September 6th. It's Jeremy Scott's brainchild and these ageing rockers are stirring up Memphis in the US. The Mama Cass inspired LP title is a precursor to a much awaited release. However, The Toy Trucks is not our only pre-release this week. Secondly to their track we have a bookend (and pre-release) from Vivian Girls. Join your resident hosts, Tobin and Richard, and The Toy Trucks, and Vivian Girls and other great artistes. Shovels and Rope bring us round to Birmingham. Tobin discusses his recent work in The Bearded Pig forge where he discussed with ironmonger Spike the respective talents of Shovels and Rope, The Devil Makes Three, Caamp et al. Importantly, Spike has a cracking Listener Suggestion for us in a fortnight's time so listen out for that. Talkboy is Wasting Time and results in some discussion about movies Richard hasn't seen. Coincidentally, so does our double and final Woodstock homage this week. Slaves make a return to the show with track 1 off side 2 of the famously limited edition 4-track EP. We don't play it from the vinyl, however, as Richard is coveting the unopened vinyl package with fervent determination. It's a strange old affair this track in comparison to the punk rock thrasher we had last week. We think you'll be surprised, nay, amazed. Weird Milk is our New Music Shot on today's show. You could have heard direct upon its release a few weeks ago here. Woodstock - the final journey This week, our final nod to the legendary Woodstock festival, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, we pull up two tracks. Firstly, the enigmatic Sha Na Na both parody and yet resurrect interest in the 1950s music scene. Secondly, '60s icon and all-round gentle human being John B. Sebastian seems to eloquently add the closing notes to the decade. Sha Na Na were the penultimate performance at Woodstock, playing early on the Monday morning, August 18th. A short 30 minute set from 7:30am to 8:00am that ushered in the now legendary performance from Jimi Hendrix. Less than a year later Jimi was dead and his death signalled an end to the euphoria and hope of a generation and a close on the '60s. We stole the title from Mama Cass Elliott Jeremy Scott What does FTBOTRB think of The Toy Trucks? Here at Record Box HQ we've been eagerly awaiting this release to arrive and there is only a week left now. We've been treated to this pre-release and have consumed it with gusto. The band's enthusiasm shines through on the track I'm On The Dish But I Ain't No Rag. It's far from contrived and over-produced, displaying the trademark Black & Wyatt touch of honesty and purity that seems to accompany every new release from the label. The guitar has a definite nod to the great Wilko Johnson but the song has an overall American feel. Scott's vocals cut straight through the noise and this track is in fifth gear right off the bat. It's a brilliant introduction to what is sure to be a must-have full length LP. You can go pre-order the record here and you'll be treated to a few more songs off the LP early - like right now! In the final episode of 'The House List' for 2016, host Peter Agoston sat with old friend and colleague Michelle Cable in special extended two-part convo! Cable runs the highly respected Panache Booking agency - regarded worldwide as one of the more distinguished independent agencies in North America.. Panache currently represents a roster of beloved bands including: Mac Demarco, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Quintron & Miss Pussycat, Reigning Sound + many more. The first part of this conversation we cover her origin story. Born in DC her family soon moved cross-country to the quaint Northern California town of Fortuna. When Michelle was in high school, she established Panache originally as a zine. Host Agoston first met Cable as a teenage publisher/show-promoter and would soon become a regular contributor to the distinctive DIY-rag. The two delve deep into Humboldt-talk - laying a rich landscape of context as old friends catch up and reminisce. Part Two continues into Michelle's move to NYC (+ most recently to LA) and the evolution of her magazine into a full-service touring/booking agency. There is a lot more covered too so enjoy part one and thank you for listening and all the support in 2016! Look for much more in the new year! Learn more about your ad choices. Featuring on Beale Street Caravan this week is native son Greg Cartwright's garage-rock juggernaut, The Reigning Sound. For the record, we suggest listening to this week's show at a very high volume. BSC contributor Jim Spake stops in to continue his series on the sidemen that played rock and roll's original lead instrument. The series is called "Crazy 'Bout A Saxophone."
There are few people around I’d rather sit down and discuss music with for 45 minutes than Greg Cartwright. Beyond the laundry list of excellent bands he’s fronted, from The Oblivians to The Reigning Sound (and the dozens in-between), the Tennessee musician makes no bones about being a huge music fan himself. That fact has manifested itself in countless side projects like The Parting Gifts with Ettes singer CoCo and records like Dangerous Game, which saw the return of Shangri-Las singer Mary Weiss after a number of decades away from the music scene. Cartwright’s deep love of music affords him an impressive level of insight when it comes to discussing his own output over the years — and almost invariably leads us down all manner of musical rabbit holes in the interim. I sat down with Cartwright backstage at The Bowery Ballroom to discuss his near decision to retiring The Reigning Sound name and the band’s subsequent return to recording with the newly released Shattered, which finds him playing with a number of recent recruits and a new-found lease on life for one of rock and roll’s most exciting groups.
Greg Cartwright is a prolific and influential musician who originally hails from Memphis, Tennessee. Over the past 20 years, Cartwright has established himself as a key and talented figure in the realms of garage rock, punk, and soul music. He has founded inspiring bands like the Compulsive Gamblers, the Oblivians, Greg Oblivian and the Tip […]

Hey folks, I've been on VACATION! Yeah, it's been a year now since I got a full-time grown-up job, so I finally decided to cash in and take a week of paid vacation. Lemme back up a bit and be honest. I didn't just go nuts and check out for awhile, I went nuts and impulsively bought tickets to the Friday night show of the Norton Records 25th anniversary celebration at the Bell House in Brooklyn! I just couldn't miss the Reigning Sound, Mark Sultan, the Great Gaylord, Jackie and The Cedrics, Mighty Hannibal, Andre Williams, and an all-star band led by Mick Collins on guitar. What a lineup! After a five day weekend in NYC that involved much record shopping (original pressings of the second New York Dolls LP AND PiL's Flowers Of Romance, YES!), a midnight show at the KILLER Spectacle Theater, a trip to Coney Island for a Nathan's Famous, and a few moments of clarity in a garden on top of a seventeen story building, I'm back and proud to present Random Old Records Podcast #37, which also happens to be the third anniversary show!Yep, I've been doing this podcast for a solid three years now and it might seem easy, but it can get hard as hell to scour the bins and blogs for a monthly hour of fresh jams sometimes. Luckily, the fall has coughed up a whole bunch of sizzling slabs that I can't stop spinning, and the springboard was a killer weeknight show at local dive The Comet, featuring Davila 666, Jacuzzi Boys, and Barreracudas. You'll hear a track from each band on this episode, kicking off with Davila's modern classic "El Lobo." Elsewhere, there's bubblegum-catchy glammy power pop punk junk from Italy's Giuda, Bare Wires, Video, and White Faces, another track from the AMAZING new Strange Boys LP (the best American rock n' roll band since the Replacements, for real), dark mysterious pop from Captured Tracks heroes Blouse and The Soft Moon, noisy Ramones worship from Terry Malts, noisy 90s slacker-rock worship from Heavy Times, and a whole helluva lot MORE!I know that I say it every time a new episode comes out, but seriously, THANK YOU for reading this blog and listening to the podcast! Whether you've been here since the beginning, or just found this site while searching for Mediafire links to the new Bad Sports LP or whatever and decided that REAL old school music writing still had merit in 2011, I'm glad you came along for the ride. Every time I think about quitting and settling into old age and complacency, my mind is blown by another bunch of kids with guitars and the cycle starts all over again. If going to the Norton bash taught me anything, it's that real, passionate rock n' roll still pokes through the cracks in this monolith of Internet cultural saturation every once in awhile, and it's no less vital than it was back in whatever time and place you decide is THE DAY. Hope you dig episode #37, and here's to three more years!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below.
