We watched the 2018 film from Sam Liu and Jake Castorena, The Death of Superman.Put on your dreariest dark clothes and cue Taps because the world just lost one of its greatest heroes. We're sorry to inform you that… Superman is no more. We're all just going about our collective days, never even thinking that some grotesque monster from the stars is going to come and devastate the planet. Who could ever plan for something like that?Join us in shedding a tear and pouring one out for ol' Supes. He was truly a phenomenal being that we were lucky to have. And, as always, a big double middle finger to Doomsday. Directed by Frank Paur and Sam Liu, Hulk vs. is a double feature film and the sixth in a series of eight direct-to-video animated superhero films made by MLG Productions (Marvel Animation and Lions Gate Entertainment), based on Marvel Comics characters. Luke and Nathan revisit this 2009 double smash which both share continuity with both Wolverine and the X-Men and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, taking place shortly before both, as well as the final film Thor: Tales of Asgard (2011). In Hulk vs. Thor, Thor's villainous half-brother Loki teams up with the Enchantress in order to use the Hulk against him. In Hulk vs. Wolverine, Logan is sent by the Canadian government to take care of the Hulk.

We're knee deep in Spooky Season, so it's about time that we stopped tricking everyone and delivering on the treats. We loved Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham so much that we just had to bring on co-director Sam Liu to talk about his work and influences. The longtime comics and fan and director of many critically acclaimed DC animated titles talks about how he discovered Lovecraft through pencil & paper RPG games, his love of the tragedy of Batman, how to balance individual interpretation with fan service, and much more. Keep up with Sam's work on Twitter and Instagram. Check out The Cast of Cthulhu on Twitter and email any questions or comments to moviesofmadness@gmail.com.

Today on #BTLRadioShow it's a day celebrating some talented and very happy and fun filmmakers and their latest films; ANDY FICKMAN talking ONE TRUE LOVES and GARO SETIAN & ANAHIT SETIAN talking SPACE WARS: QUEST FOR THE DEEPSTAR. Each of the filmmakers you'll hear from in my prerecorded exclusive interviews are brimming with joy and happiness as they talk about their respective films and their craft. And another commonality among them is their attention to detail in the making of their films. First up, take a listen to the oh-so-talented and oh-so-fun ANDY FICKMAN talking about his new film ONE TRUE LOVES. Starring Simu Liu, Luke Bracey, and Phillipa Soo, ONE TRUE LOVES is a tale filled with love, heartache, and happiness that is sweet, sentimental, and poignant as Emma (Soo) marries the love of her life Jesse (Bracey) only to lose him to a tragic accident a year later. But as time passes, she reconnects with her childhood best friend Sam (Liu) and falls deeply in love with him. But as Emma readies for a future with Sam, Jesse suddenly appears. How do you choose between the two loves of your life? And that's the journey that Andy takes us on and discusses in this interview with each aspect of the directorial process. Then get ready, as we blast off with director/co-writer/editor GARO SETIAN and producer/actor ANAHIT SETIAN and go deep into the making of SPACE WARS: QUEST FOR THE DEEPSTAR. A fun fun film that pays homage to the best parts of sci-fi fantasy films, SPACE WARS is the story of father-daughter space cowboys Kip and Taylor Corman as they travel the galaxies on an elusive search for something very precious. Along for the ride is a fellow space traveler named Jackie. As comes as no surprise there are bad guys in pursuit, an over-the-top very pissed-off female ship captain named Elnora, and plenty of creatures, aliens, space battles, and more! Starring Michael Pare, Sarah French, Olivier Gruner, Tyler Gallant, Jed Rowen, Sadie Katz, and ANAHIT SETIAN (who steals the film with heart and humor), Garo celebrates practical effects and buttresses that VFX and creature creations while always keeping his eye on character and story. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

DC Animation Director Sam Liu has an astonishing list of credits but remains one of the most humble people we've ever had on the pod. Sam regales us with tales of working in comics near the end of “The Image Era”, and at Sony Animation when they were just getting started. He's also worked with super producers like Bruce Timm of Batman The Animated Series as well as some of the greatest character designers, storyboard artists, and voice actors in the world. This one isn't so much celebrating one particular work or character as “The Greatest something or other.” Instead, we examine the challenges of doing “feature” animation on a TV budget and excelling as a professional artist even when you don't REALLY love drawing. Sam's is a story of getting in where you fit and excelling as the leader of a team. His illustrious career shows us the ephemeral, transitive nature of childhood dreams, and how maturing can alter your perception of what connotes success. Follow us! There have been a lot of animated Justice League movies, and in this episode Perry is joined by author Gordon Dymowski to discuss one of the oddest ones of all. Justice League: Gods and Monsters featured Bruce Timm's return to the DC characters, except this Justice League is composed of General Zod's son, Kirk Langstrom, and Bekka of the Fourth World. It's an interesting and somewhat strange addition to the canon that doesn't quite work so well.Buy or rent this movie on AmazonThis episode is sponsored by Audible, where you can listen to thousands of audiobooks, podcasts, and original content. Public health vs. the economy is a dangerously false dichotomy. We can protect our people AND get back to work if we accept reality and embrace science. You already know you should wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing. As we begin to go back to work and spend time with our extended families and friends, Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) tools present an additional layer of protection that could allow us to do so more responsibly, safely, and productively. Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) tools, like pulse oximeters, blood pressure cuffs, Bluetooth thermometers, and others often used in chronic disease management programs, can help you baseline your vitals, offer peace of mind, and alert you at the earliest possible moment when there might be a problem. NOTE: We recorded this episode on June 15, 2020, right before the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in many states across the U.S. Things look quite different today, but these ideas and tools still apply. Be responsible. Wear a mask. Take care of yourself and your family. And in general, do your part to safely reopen our economy. Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week, to take our minds off of a global-wide pandemic, we go “elseworld” with a review and celebration of the DC Animated Universe release of Superman: Red Son with a red carpet interview montage of the leading voices and creators including the voice of “Superman”, Jason Isaacs, “Lois Lane” Amy Acker, “Wonder Woman” Vanessa Marshall, “James Olsen” Phil Morris, “John Stewart” Phil LaMarr, “Hal Jordan” Sasha Roiz, “Batman” Roger Craig Smith, “Superior Man” Travis Wellingham and director Sam Liu. Based on DC’s famed Elseworlds tale from 2003, Superman: Red Son takes place in an alternate reality where the spaceship bearing the last survivor of Krypton crash lands – not in rural Kansas, but in Stalinist Russia. Can this Cold War-era Earth survive the coming of a Soviet Superman? Can this real world podcast survive the coming of a virtual only world? Recorded at the World Premiere of “Superman: Red Son” on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. This episode takes your hosts, Grim Shea, Marke and Jimmy the Gent, back to a more innocent time, when people met in shared places, shook hands, watched a movie together and talked face to face. Oh the good old days comrade! #SupermanRedSon is available now!

Sam Liu is an Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria’s School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education (EPHE). His research focuses on the ways in which social media can be used to promote health. The rise of social media and digital technology has brought with it controversy. Smartphones, screen time, and social networking can be used for good, but can also have negative impacts on our health. They can create communities, but they can also cause anxiety and other health issues. Liu’s research studies both sides of the argument. Even more than just studying the impacts of social media, Liu studies how and when we can intervene when the negative side starts to outweigh the positive. For example, Liu and his team are mining Twitter data and comparing it to other biomedical data to determine physical activity levels within certain geographical communities. With this data, they are able to monitor in real-time which areas may need help becoming more physically active. Listen to this episode to learn more about how Liu’s research is creating mentally and physically healthy communities by monitoring social media. Extra episode this week! Hot on the heels of our deluge of bonus episodes last week from the first DC in DC event, we've got one more surprise. That event kicked off with a premiere screening of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. Before the screening, a big chunk of the cast and creative team behind the film did some roundtable interviews, and then we all had a chance to watch the film on the big screen at the Newseum. On this episode, we're bringing you the roundtable interviews from Bruce Greenwood (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Scott Patterson (James Gordon), Yuri Lowenthal (Harvey Dent), Bruce Timm (executive producer), and Jim Krieg (screenwriter). We've had Timm and Krieg on the show before when we brought you the media interviews from last year's New York Comic-Con (that episode also features director Sam Liu). For a full blast of Gotham by Gaslight, I highly recommend listening to both episodes and then immediately watching the film. But I'm biased.
We’re talking about Batman again! Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is the thirtieth film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series, serving as a stand-alone feature based on the one-shot graphic novel of the same name by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. Directed and produced by Sam Liu and written by James Krieg, we’ve got the voice talents of Bruce Greenwood, Jennifer Carpenter, Anthony Head, John DiMaggio, and Tara Stong. In Victorian era Gotham City, Bruce Wayne is operating as the bat-garbed vigilante, the Batman, who is feared by the guilty and the innocent alike. In this mystery thriller, Batman scours the dark streets of Gotham to find the elusive serial killer Jack the Ripper. Unfortunately, one of the main suspects is Bruce Wayne himself.

WE’RE BACK! Batman and Harley Quinn is the twenty-ninth DC original animated movie, paying somewhat of an homage to Batman: The Animated Series. Writers Jim Krieg and Bruce Timm bring us this latest standalone feature, with Sam Liu in the director’s chair. Batman and Nightwing form a reluctant but necessary alliance with Harley Quinn to stop Poison Ivy and Floronic Man from transforming people into plants. Kevin Conroy returns as the voice of Batman. Loren Lester returns as the voice of Nightwing. And Melissa Rauch debuts as Harley Quinn. Lots of action? Great animation? Incredibly funny? Too much sex? …All of the above? Music: The Dead White Males

Justice League: Gods and Monsters is the latest in DC’s line of animated features. Sam Liu directs this alternative universe where the Justice League are not as you know. Benjamin Bratt voices Superman, the son of General Zodd. Michael C. Hall is the pseudo vampire Batman. And Tamara Taylor gives us her Wonder Woman – the New God. Luke and Jason take a look to determine if these versions of our superheroes are gods or monsters?
As Batman hunts for the escaped Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime attacks the Gordon family to prove a diabolical point mirroring his own fall into madness. The film is directed by Sam Liu, written by Brian Azzarello and stars the voices of Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Tara Strong and Ray Wise. It is the first DC Universe animated film to have an R-rating. Fellow GeekDad contributors Corrina Lawson and Kishore Hari join Jamie to discuss Batman: The Killing Joke - the original book, the animated film, and our personal histories with the story. It ends up being (an incredibly civil) debate with both Corrina and Kishore taking polar opposite sides of the issue. Following that, we present the press roundtable interviews from San Diego Comic-Con for the movie. Interviews include Brian Azzarello (screenwriter), Ray Wise (Commissioner Gordon), Tara Strong (Batgirl), Sam Liu (director), Kevin Conroy (Batman), and Bruce Timm (executive producer).
This week’s movie has been a long time coming! BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE is directed by Sam Liu, and stars the voice talents of Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Tara Strong, and Ray Wise. It’s based on one of the most celebrated Batman graphic novels by Alan Moore. Joke’s on you! Prepare to commit MASS MOVIECIDE!
A bit of a change of pace this week, as we look for the first time at a direct-to-DVD animated adaptation, with Sam Liu's 2010 film of Planet Hulk. As well as discussing this specific film's merits, we talk more generally about the genre: do these adaptations generally work? What, if anything, do they offer that a live-action film or the original comic can't? And are there any comics we'd like to see adapted into the format?
