Min 36: PREPARADOS PARA THE LAST OF US. T2 "The Last of Us" temporada 2 abre con una herida sin cerrar y una tensión brutal Después de una primera temporada que conquistó a crítica y público al adaptar con fidelidad e inteligencia el aclamado videojuego de Naughty Dog, The Last of Us regresa con un primer episodio de su segunda temporada que no pierde el tiempo: es intenso, emocionalmente devastador y, sobre todo, valiente. Min 39.

We owe one of the most moving comedy-dramas in recent TV history to a monster truck rally. Jen Statsky was en route to Portland, Oregon to film a comedy sketch at the Monster Jam rally back in 2015 when she got chatting with her road trip accomplices, fellow comedy writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs. They spoke about the history of pushed-aside women in the entertainment industry – female comedians like Singin' In The Rain star Debbie Reynolds, whose careers were derailed by misogynistic practices in Hollywood. On that day, Hacks was born – a HBO series up for a number of awards at this year's Emmys and deservedly so. The show – starring Jean Smart as a comedian in the twilight of her career and Hannah Einbinder as the young comic sent to write new material for her – is as funny as you'd expect from Jen, whose previous TV writing credits include The Good Place, Parks and Recreation and Broad City. But it's also tremendously emotive. She and fellow series creators Lucia and Paul have crafted a show that's both heartwarming and heartbreaking in its depiction of an unlikely female friendship that makes each party look at the world a little differently.  In this episode, Jen talks about the thousands of titles explored for the show before they landed on Hacks, the evolutions in the streaming market that have allowed for shows like this and Barry to so ambitiously blend comedy with drama, and how some of the show's most memorable moments to date were written. This is a spoiler conversation so you might want to catch up on the series in its entirety before tuning in.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Deborah Vance, played so brilliantly by the great Jean Smart, ends this first episode bloodied, clawing her way over whatever obstacles she faces. Now an underdog, Deborah is leaving Las Vegas, the city she once ruled, to hit the road and reinvent herself with Ava (precariously) by her side. There will be blood, as the title of this first episode foretells, but there is also going to be vulnerability and humor and self-discovery. The amazingly funny supporting cast is all back to add laughs, as well as touching emotional beats to this rich story. Host Geri Cole is joined by Jen Statsky—co-creator and showrunner of the HBO Max series HACKS—to talk about the show's journey from an idea on a road trip to a hit series, why writing about people's flaws can bring out the best in a character, and the challenges of writing a comedy series about writing comedy. Jen Statsky is a TV writer and comedian who cut her comedy-writing teeth on Twitter. Her posts were popular, and she eventually found herself with enough of a following that, in 2011, the account helped her land her first TV writing job at LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON. Since then, she has written for a number of hit comedies, including BROAD CITY, THE GOOD PLACE, and PARKS & RECREATION (all while maintaining her Twitter account, of course). She currently serves as the showrunner of the comedy-drama series HACKS. The series, which Statsky co-created with Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, follows legendary stand-up comic Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart) as she works to maintain relevancy through a reluctant partnership with struggling millennial comedy writer Ava. The show premiered in May 2021, and was recently renewed for a second season. It's available to stream on HBO Max. -- Before it was a podcast, OnWriting was a print publication. Downs, and Jen Statsky that streams on HBO Max.  The show tells the story of two very funny women at different points in their careers.  Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedy diva, is struggling to maintain relevance while the head of the casino where she performs tries to pare down on her performance dates. Ava is a Gen Z comedy writer who is unable to find work due to being "canceled" over an insensitive tweet. The two reluctantly team up to freshen up Vance's material, while learning to respect each other's differences along the way. JESS BRUNETTO Jess Brunetto is a director, writer, producer and editor. Her film work has screened at Cannes, Venice and Sundance. (2018), on which she also served as an associate producer. SUSAN VAILL ACE Susan's love of music-driven storytelling has led her to be described as 'a legendary music supervisor masquerading as an award-winning editor.'  After assistant-editing documentaries and feature films like The Last Samurai (2003), Susan edited over 70 episodes of Grey's Anatomy (2005) which won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series in 2008. Susan also directed three episodes of the series, one of which featured an Emmy-winning performance by guest actress Loretta Devine.  In addition to Hacks, her other television editor credits include; Space Force (2020), Grandfathered (2015), Me, Myself and I (2017), This Is Us (2016), and Lodge 49 (2018). ALI GREER In addition to her Emmy® nomination for Hacks, Ali was twice nominated for an ACE Eddie award for her work on the series, Portlandia.  In fact, Ali's editorial career is highlighted by several standout series in the comedy genre.  Her time as an assistant editor was punctuated with a stint on Kroll Show (2015) as well as the aforementioned Portlandia (2015).  From there she went on to edit such shows as Dream Corp LLC (2018), Black Monday (2020) and Schmigadoon! The Cinematography Podcast
Cinematographer Adam Bricker on shooting the Emmy-nominated series Hacks, Chef’s Table and more

The Cinematography Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 28, 2021 62:14

One of Adam Bricker's favorite things about being a cinematographer is the opportunity to collaborate with different filmmakers, try something new and make each project the best it can be. His most recent project is the HBO Max comedy series Hacks, which just earned him an Emmy nomination for best cinematography. Adam was given the scripts for the first two episodes, and loved the pilot script, which opens with a long Steadicam single shot following behind the main character, Deborah Vance, played by Jean Smart, for two minutes, until her character is finally revealed in the dressing room vanity mirror. Adam knew it's a rare thing to find a half-hour comedy with that level of cinema, and he was excited to shoot the show. Hacks takes place in Las Vegas, about a legendary comedian who is losing relevance and fading from the spotlight. Adam and show creator Lucia Aniello used vintage Las Vegas movies and photos as a reference point, as well as films such as Soderberg's Behind The Candelabra and Judy with Renée Zellweger. Adam likes to set the look based on how the viewer is supposed to feel, and he makes notes in his scripts about what emotions should be felt in each scene. Most of Hacks is filmed on tripods and dollies, but for the verbal duels between characters Deborah Vance and Ava, her young comedy writer/protégé, Adam chose to shoot handheld, which gives those scenes more energy and naturalism. Lighting on the show goes from naturalistic, when Deborah is at home or when Ava is in Los Angeles, contrasted with vintage glamorous stage lighting when Deborah performs her comedy act. Adam grew up in Chicago and attended film school there before attending the USC summer cinema program, which inspired him to transfer to USC and continue studying cinematography. After college, Adam began taking as many jobs as he could, and planned to work his way up through the camera department, before a DP mentor suggested he buy a camera and take as many cinematography jobs as possible. He and a group of friends invested in a Red One digital camera, and Adam shot dozens of music videos and low-budget films. The Netflix series Chef's Table has taken Adam all over the world. As one of the primary DPs of Chef's Table, Adam and show creator David Gelb have established the artistic look of the modern cuisine documentary, which has since been imitated by countless other food shows. When the show began, Adam had never shot a documentary before, so he had a more cinematic approach to the show, only using prime lenses and no zoom lenses. For him, it's been a dream job to explore new places, eat amazing food at excellent restaurants and work with good friends on the crew. We may have initially resisted jumping on what felt like an over-hyped bandwagon for this HBO Max hit, but Hacks and the brilliance of Jean Smart won us over instantly! If you loved Hacks as much as we do, you'll want to listen to our discussion of these complicated women, Deborah and Hannah. We start by marveling at how their coming together allows us to love them each even more as individuals.   ** Scenes. We wanted to discuss them all, but we managed to narrow it down to some of our favorites. We discuss Episode 2, “Primm”, which Carinn declares the best episode of TV ever! I think we're still humming that Selena Gomez song in our heads! (06:52); Episode 6, “New Eyes” where Deborah literally gets her eyes done, but figuratively they end up seeing each other in new ways (20:32);  Episode 9, “The Interview,” has Kate on the couch, relating to Deborah's vulnerability with a reporter (32:43); and Episode 10, “I Think She Will”, is a finale with a fight, a funeral and a bombshell cliffhanger. (41:40) ** What's Your Damage? It's like the creators of Hacks just knew how much we love mommy issues! Talk about a theme that runs through-out this show! (56:25) ** What She Said (or in this case, What They Said). We deep dive into our first writing trio, Lucia Aniello, Paul Downs and Jen Statsky, marveling about the dynamic of these long-time friends and real life couple. (60:02) ** Who Won The Show? For Kate, the winner is generational conflict and for Carinn it's the brilliant reversal of typical female tropes displayed through-out this show. (66:37) **Takeaways. Kate takes a quote from co-creator Jen Statsky and gets personal about collaboration and saying yes. Carinn talks about ambition and the ways we see that depicted in Hacks are nuanced and original. One of the three co-creators of the new HBO Max series “Hacks,” Aniello also directed six of the 10 episodes (including the first three) and together with cinematographer Adam Bricker employed a purposeful and effective use of the camera so sorely missing from most half-hour comedy series. On the podcast Lucia discusses casting a non-standup in Jean Smart, creating her routines, and how she used the camera to tell the story of Deborah Vance (Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder). Bricker joins the second half of the podcast to talk about creating the look of a classic Vegas and avoiding the pitfalls inherent with cross-shooting a comedy series.  Learn more about your ad choices.
