Jack Tame: This Bledisloe clash doesn't feel like much of a contest

Off the top of your head, where do reckon the Wallabies currently sit in the World rankings?   Sure, they're behind us. They're behind South Africa, of course. But they're also languishing behind Scotland, behind Italy, would you believe.  According to World Rugby, the Wallabies of September 2024 are the ninth best national team in men's rugby today. They only just squeak in ahead of Fiji.  When I was a kid, the Bledisloe felt like the biggest thing in rugby outside of a World Cup. It probably wasn't, of course. Tests with South Africa were at least comparable, I guess, and Lions tours had their prestige. But I would get so worked up for Bledisloes because they always felt like anyone could win.   I still remember epic Bledisloe clashes. The John Eales era. George Gregan and that tackle, Jeff Wilson spilling the ball as he dived for the line, the Wallabies just holding on for Bledisloe glory.  But what happened? New Zealand Rugby's had its issues, but arguably no country that plays rugby has experienced anything like the decline that Australia has experienced. Those epic Bledisloe clashes of the past are becoming ancient history. It's 22 years since Australia last held the Bledisloe - we now have an elected Member of Parliament who has never seen the Wallabies win it.   And get this: according to the Australian Sports Commission, rugby is the country's ninth-most-popular sport by participation. Aussie Rules has four times as many kids who play. Basketball is five times more popular. Rugby loses out to rock climbing and badminton.   There are a range of things that have likely contributed. The private school rugby culture in Australia has isolated the sport from a huge slab of the population. Concern over head knocks will have impacted participation. The domestic rugby competition was hollowed out and ultimately scrapped, which means the Super Rugby teams are the only real professional options for young players. The AFL has 18 teams. The NRL has 16 Australian teams. Super Rugby will now have just four. It's telling that a city of five million couldn't sustain a side. How many people in Melbourne didn't even know the Rebels were a thing? And as a TV entertainment product, sorry, but the Brumbies vs the Force rarely compares to the thrill of the NRL.  All of this is not to diminish this evening's game. And I'm certainly not hoping for a Wallabies win. But ultimately, it's in our interests for Australian rugby to somehow work its way back into something akin to the force of the past. New Zealand rugby needs better competition from across the ditch. We need the spectre of potentially losing the Bledisloe! Maybe I'll eat my words, but as much as I'll enjoy the game this evening, right now... it doesn't feel like all that much of a contest. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wallabies fell a long way short in Santa Fe against Los Pumas, unable to double down on their gritty win in the rain last week. The injury embattled ‘Boys of Gold' got completely and utterly outplayed by the hosts in the second forty, as the Pumas piled on the points for fun. Plus, we also touch on that Cape Town ‘crunch-a-thon', as the lads from the land of the long white cloud lose two on the trot to the blistering Boks. In a week where Australia stands as one to congratulate James Slipper for tying George Gregan's all-time Aussie caps record, the ‘KOKO Crew' are here right after the action to give you some hot takes, juicy tips and tangy touchpoints all wrapped up in a comprehensively disappointing review of some toe tickling Test Footy. Today in The Sports Lounge Big Lou Welcomes Matt Giteau from the Los Angeles Giltinis! Matt Giteau is one of the most-decorated Australian rugby players in history, with a career spanning many countries and almost two decades. The flyhalf has plenty of sporting pedigree in his family. HIs father Ron played professional rugby league, his sister Kristy is a dual code international and wife Bianca is a former top flight netballer. Giteau grew up in Canberra and attended St Edmund's College, a school that also counts George Gregan among its alumni. It was at St Edmund's where he first played rugby seriously Giteau is one of just two players to have made his Wallabies debut before he made his Super Rugby debut. The talented back played his first Test in 2002 against England on that year's Spring Tour. From there he became a regular fixture on the Test stage when he was fully fit, featuring in the first of three Rugby World Cups less than a year later. Giteau started his Super Rugby career with the Brumbies, playing 40 matches over the six seasons he was with the team. He made a cross-country move ahead of the 2007 season, signing with new side the Western Force in Perth. He spent three seasons with the Force before returning to the Brumbies in 2010. It was in 2011 when Giteau faced a career crossroads, left out of the World Cup squad by then Test coach Robbie Deans. With no clarity on his Test future, Giteau signed a deal in France with Toulon and seemingly walked away from any further international opportunities. GIteau starred in the Top 14 competition with Toulon, winning three consecutive Champions Cup titles with the French glamour club. HIs form in France earned him a recall into the Wallabies fold, a move that required the creation of a new international eligibility clause dubbed the ‘Giteau Law'. After playing a part in the Wallabies' run to the Rugby World CUp final, Giteau made a brief appearance in the 2016 Bledisloe Cup series before an injury ultimately forced him into international retirement. After finishing his stint with Toulon, Giteau made the switch to Japan, winning a Top League trophy with Suntory. His time with the Sungoliath finished at the end of the 2020 Japanese season, which was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Feeling a bit unfulfilled by the ending in Japan, he's excited about writing another in Los Angeles. Giteau had moved back to Canberra with Bianca and their two sons Levi and Kai and also recently welcomed a daughter, Winter. www.lagiltinis.com

A great story that started at a young age.  Saia tells me that he signed with the Brumbies Academy at 14 years and 9 months old and was training with  Wallabies greats George Gregan, Stephen Larkham and George Smith. He lets us know how his Aboriginal mother and Tongan father met and married, then raised 5 boys while living in a pub.  He shares about how his mother was their nutritionist, taxi driver, and confidante even to this day and how his father helped the boys into their first investment as 18-year-olds.Saia shares his thoughts and memories of his time with the Queensland Reds, winning their inaugural Super Rugby title. And playing under Robbie Deans with Wallabies and what he thought about a Kiwi coaching the Australian Rugby team.Saia and his twin brother Anthony, have founded  100% indigenous-owned and operated companies Moonyah Services, Moonyah Workforce, and Madji Furniture.  The Fainga'a twins have a business goal to be one of the first indigenous companies for labour hire traffic control to be listed on the share market.  With the passion and hearing their story, I'd bank on them achieving it.Another awesome conversation with plenty of good learnings.Make sure you listen to find out what they are.

Embattled Rugby Australia's Chief Executive Raelene Castle stepped down last night after nearly three years at the helm, saying she believed the board no longer wanted her in the role amid a financial crisis compounded by the coronavirus shutdown. Eleven former Wallabies players, including Nick Farr-Jones, George Gregan and Michael Lynagh, had also signed a letter earlier this week demanding a leadership change. And, the NRL is to restart next month, but where does this leave the Warriors? A new documentary on Michael Jordan, and should golf and tennis pros play without spectators?

Embattled Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle is fighting back against a growing chorus of voices calling for her resignation. The sporting body is seeking crisis talks with 11 disgruntled former Wallabies captains who have called for a leadership overhaul at the governing body.World Cup-winning skipper Nick Farr-Jones is behind a vote-of-no-confidence letter delivered to boss Raelene Castle and the board.George Gregan and Phil Kearns - a leading candidate to succeed Castle - are among those to put their names to paper.Dual World Cup winners John Eales and Tim Horan as well as grand slam-winning skipper Andrew Slack are not signatories.Castle told Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford the only thing she's paying attention to is pushing on with big strategic changes which are starting to pay dividends. “That’s what we have set about doing the past few years."Those results are not immediate, but I do believe we have the building blocks in place to see things improve.”LISTEN ABOVE
