This week Mike is joined by old podcasting pal Jennferatu (The Losers Club, Girls On the Boys, Psychoanalysis, Dread Central, Bloody Disgusting) to talk about the twin headed beast that is slaying all at the box-office right now: Bsrbie and Oppenheimer. Along with speculating why these two movies are more connected than they appear on the surface, and why they're resonating with audiences at the moment, we talk about the themes of masculinity and patriarchy as portrayed in each movie. We discuss the search for identity in both movies and the moral crises addressed in Oppenheimer. We also wonder why Christopher Nolan, for all his genius, (still) struggles to write women. It was great sitting down to talk to Jenn about movies for the first time in a long time, and we hope you enjoy this discussion. (If you dug Oppenheimer and want to dig further into the story, or want to hear more from the perspectives of the victims of the atomic bombing, Mike suggests the following: BOOKS AMERICAN PROMETHEUS, FALLOUT: THE HIROSHIMA COVER-UP & THE REPORTER WHO REVEALED IT TO THE WORLD, FIVE DAYS IN AUGUST: HOW WORLD WAR II BECAME A NUCLEAR WAR FILM THE DAY AFTER TRINITY, BLACK RAIN, HIROSHIMA, HIROSHIMA NAGASAKI AUGUST 1945)

Richard Clapton began his recording career in 1974. Australia was still in the vice-like grip of the cultural cringe. He plunged into the “deep water” and legends like Skyhooks and Paul Kelly, Cold Chisel, INXS, Midnight Oil, and hundreds of others, followed in his wake. Clapton's songs are still omnipresent on the radio to this day, his records charting the political landscape of the nation and the turbulent lives of two generations. Clapton grew up in Sydney in the 1960s before hopping a plane for London, and then later to Germany, where he wrote a first album, Prussian Blue (1973) which was one of the first major Australian “singer-songwriter” albums. Fast track to 1975, Clapton had the critics on side but his label at the time, Festival Records, insisted on a hit single. However, it was the song they picked as a B-side called “Girls On the Avenue” that reached #1 on the national charts and put Clapton at the top of his class. Like Americans Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, Richard Clapton developed a sound based on melodic rock while his lyrics were poetic musings on his state of mind or the state of the nation. In 1980 he released the searing Dark Spaces, an indictment on the meanness and mendacity that would blow through the 1980s. Ten years after his first release, Richard Clapton was a tribal elder to whom younger artists like Jimmy Barnes, INXS and Cold Chisel turned as a mentor. INXS asked Clapton to produce their second album, Underneath the Colours, and they became firm friends. They, and Cold Chisel, returned the favour on Clapton's The Great Escape album with INXS drummer Jon Farriss going on to produce The Glory Road album. Few records of that time captured the roller coaster ride of the late 1980s as well as Glory Road. These albums brought Clapton's melodic gifts and his love of electric rock & roll into lockstep. In the 1990s Richard continued to write and record and tour and his 1990s songs reflect a hard-won maturity. Indeed, Richard counts 2003's Diamond Mine as amongst his best albums – and the critics unanimously agreed. In 1999 Richard Clapton was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2014, his first memoir “The Best Years of Our Lives” was published by Allen and Unwin. The book connected with people of all generations because it was not only a story of Clapton's journey, but it also documented the story of the lives of thousands of fans who had travelled the same road. Young people – fascinated by how it was “back in the day” also became a new generation of fans. The book continues to flourish through “word of mouth”, resonating with so many people in so many ways Richard Clapton has never been rich. He has never had the pleasure of passing through life in a luxurious rock star bubble. In a career that now spans over 40 years he has battled everything from bad managers and capricious record companies to debt, taxes, personal tragedy and a thousand room service dinners. The fact that he's come through it all with his sanity intact surprises all who know and love him.

Today is a seriously cool moment as I am sitting down to talk with women's soccer icon Carli Lloyd. I played soccer growing up, so I've admired Carli as an athlete for so long. I get the chills remembering all the times I watched her and the USWNT in awe. For episode 168, we talk about everything from how she deals with unsolicited feedback and the haters to the way she's managed her recovery from a tough knee injury a few years back. She also offers advice on the importance of self belief, gives us some insight into her mostly organic diet — we were actually connected by her sponsor at Gone Rogue Protein Snacks — AND can't forget her stellar book and podcast recommendations. When I laid out the content for this week, there was no doubt in my mind that I A. Wanted to talk about run culture and B. Would need to do that with Knox Robinson. For his second appearance on the show, I'm chatting with the runner and writer about how run crews came to be and what he took into account when co-founding Black Roses NYC. We also chat about how runners around the country can get more involved locally, the difference between run crews/collectives and training groups (hint: culture), and discuss that even in groups — it really starts with the individual. Welcome to Run Week on Hurdle! In celebration of global running day on Wednesday, June 2, I’m bringing five back-to-back episodes dedicated to the sport that changed my life. For today’s episode, I’m chatting with Aisha Praught-Leer, she’s a professional middle-distance runner for Puma, a world finalist, and olympian, and seriously one of the kindest, most down to earth interviews. She’s been on the show before, but this time around we’re chatting about the bad runs. That’s right — the days where your head’s just not in the game. We cover how to navigate that icky feeling and when to call it quits. Aisha shares so many actionable tips that I found myself using during Sunday nights Orchard Street Runners race. Welcome to Run Week on Hurdle! In celebration of Global Running Day on Wednesday, June 2, I’m bringing five back-to-back episodes dedicated to the sport that changed my life. That’s not an exaggeration. As many of you know, I started running back in college with a half-mile every single day for a summer. Over the years, that half mile became a mile, that mile became a 5K, and well — now I’m a nine-time marathoner and certified run coach via the United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy. I know we have a lot of runners in the Hurdle community, and I made it pretty clear at the start of season 6 that my goal is to cover all areas of wellness. But, I couldn’t let this week go by without doing something special. I’m super amped about the line-up of guests this week kicking off with Jess Movold. She’s known by many as a coach for Runner’s World, based here in New York, and a long-time friend of mine. Today we are chatting about the long run, what it is and how it can differ in length depending on your goals, how to do it better, strategies that you can implement on this particular workout to better slay your next race, and so much more. She’s also got a pretty rough first marathon story to share with all of you, which includes and unfortunate incident with some white shorts (you may be able to guess where this one is going.) On this week's Bachelor recap, Marni and Chris give Bachelor Matt James the one-two punch. He is leading the girls on creating a false sense of intimacy with them but then only makes a play for the emotionally unavailable ladies. Marni points out the pink and red flags she sees on the show and offers advice on how to spot them in your dating life. Key takeaways from this episode: Realize your self-worth or value How to pick yourself up after a breakup How to identify a guy who is leading you on Rejected by a guy? It means nothing about who you are Watch out for guys who create a false sense of intimacy Low Self-Worth = Overcompensation [1:48] Some of the ladies seem to have forgotten that this experience is essentially a ‘dating’ game. It appears they are overcompensating for their limiting beliefs about what they deserve. Many believe if they get sent home it is a reflection of their self-worth or value. In reality, it doesn't matter how awesome you are, if there is something that isn't working you may not be maximizing your opportunities. The women who will make it to the end are the ones who don't make mistakes because it is a competition. Never feel like you were not enough for someone. You may not be the person for them but you ARE enough. Chris asks Marni about the process of shaking off rejection. Understanding that some ladies are just naturally emotional, Marni says, “If you are the puddle on the floor person it is important to start looking at your patterns. Do you give all your power away to men all the time? Consider the core beliefs creating your feelings of not-enoughness. Do you have abandonment issues?” You are enough! So Many Pink and Red Flags on the Bachelor [17:47] During the show, Heather does a pizza box dance. Her makeup was perfect. Chris says she was putting on a show just for the camera and the audience. Matt immediately gave the cold shoulder to the girls he was talking to and only paid attention to Heather. His actions and words don't mix. Matt has a pattern of physically removing himself from the ladies. Pink flags abound. Matt James is attracted to the emotionally unavailable gals. The girls are trying to be vulnerable, but he is just a guy that leads women on. Advice for the girls who are trying to figure Matt out, he may not be worth your time. Marni says he is a F*c$boy. If a guy seems too good to be true and he doesn’t share anything about himself, move on. That type of guy can be nice. They are not purposefully malicious but they know how to get ladies to keep running back to them. Women can become emotionally attached because they get a shot of oxytocin and it creates a feeling of intense intimacy. Is Matt James Leading the Girls On? [36:01] Chris says no matter how hard ABC is trying to sell Matt as Prince Charming it is not working. Matt is just another emotionally unavailable guy in a pretty package. Even Matt's Instagram followers ask him why he is so boring on the show. Marni says Matt doesn’t seem to be looking for love, just an increase in followers. She doesn’t believe any relationship he gets into will last very long. He is like a computer and just wants to be liked. This is why we structure our year long movie podcast around the Academy Awards. It’s also why we love to review our favorite series like the MCU, Mission Impossibles, Conjuring Universe, and the Halloween Franchise. Finally, it is exactly why we planned this episode around the creative submissions from our fellow podcasters. We asked them each to invent a slasher movie persona, and they did not disappoint. All The Horror is 31 days of Halloween themed podcasts, and we’re thrilled to share our feed and our show with such a fantastic group. Big thanks to... In Poor Taste, The Cabinet Podcast, Invasion of the Remake, Besotted Geek, Movie Geek and Proud, and 2 Girls on a Bench. They made us laugh, made us think, & made us think twice about ever messing with any of them. If you’re coming over to us from another All The Horror podcast, then we hope this is a fun way to introduce ourselves. If you’re one of our fans, and we just introduced you to these other 6 podcasts, then we recommend you begin clicking on their feeds to further enrich your pod listening lives. We certainly have and will continue to do so. Bottom Line: this episode proved we’re all kindred spirits here, and we had a blast doing a combined show for such an awesome project like All The Horror. You can find all our shows on iTunes. Do please review & 5 star us on there when you get the chance. These ratings will help us all grow our audiences organically, and we certainly appreciate it. As for us at MMO, you can also find the show on Soundcloud, Stitcher, Tune In, Google Play, and nearly everywhere you can listen to podcasts. We are Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and at Gmail. We are at MMandOscar on Twitter, where we’re most active. Finally, do get ready for our website, mikemikeandoscar .com. We are nearing a launch date. Thanks for another record breaking month. When reality has sucked, you’ve been watching movies with us. We couldn’t ask for a better audience. Thank you.
Clemmie Perry started playing golf in 2013 and is turning her passion into a national movement to make a difference in the lives of women & girls through the sport of golf. In 2014, she started Women of Color Golf (WOCG), and Girls On the Green Tee (GOTG-T), which are programs designed to increase and facilitate minority participation in the sport of golf for women and girls. In four short years, they have introduced over 350 minority women & girls to the basic fundamentals of golf in the Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida Bay area & Washington, D.C. https://uploads.fireside.fm/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/SCS6Cu_B.jpg The mission of these programs is to encourage and promote individuals to learn the benefits of golf, provide organized golf clinics, participate in recreational golf activities, fitness workshops and mentoring opportunities. The mentoring program, Girls on the Green Tee (GOTG-T), is designed for girls ages 10 -17, answering the ever present need for strong, accomplished, and resilient female role-models. WOCG & GOTG -T seeks to create a spark of interest and inspiration in the game of golf. This inspiration is then turned into action by connecting the women and girls to our golf community through golf instruction, activities and events. The Women of Color Golf (WOCG) and Girls on the Green Tee (GOTG-T) programs have grown into a national recognized, community-based program, with recent recognition by former President Barack Obama, as a U.S. White House Champion of Change for After School Extra Curricula Enrichment for Marginalized Girls. WOCG has been featured in Forbes, Ebony, Black Enterprise, Golf for Her, Professional Golf Association (PGA) magazine, the African American Golfer’s Digest and several local Tampa Bay TV and radio broadcasts.
